Possible corrupt extension problem? (G4 - OS 9.1)

After a bad shutdown, (my fault) of my G4 everything still worked ok apart from one weird problem. Some of the programs I use (Quark for instance) don't 'remember' the previous file location. For instance, if I dig down some folders and pull up a file, and then immediately try to open up another file from the same location, the program defaults to the desktop, and I have to dig through the folders again. It's the same with 'Save As', it always defaults to one particular location, not the previously used one.
I've tried desktop rebuild, zapping the PRAM, Diskwarrior, (which found some errors it corrected, and I've used 'scavenge' mode), Norton Disk Doctor but still the problem pesists.
I tried deleting the System Preferences file, which actually worked, until I rebooted.
I've now tried re-installing 9.1 (but haven't yet tried a 'Clean Install').
I've just booted up with extensions off, and all programs work as they should, i.e. they remember the previous file location just used.
So, I'm thinking it might be a corrupted extension, but haven't a clue which one affects the file location issue above.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Would this problem get solved by doing a 'clean install'? I've backed-up the existing system folder, however, I'm worried that if I do a clean install, I will have to copy back all my existing extensions & preference files, which will probably re-introduce the same problem.
Please could someone advise on the best way forward?
By the way, I've experienced this problem previously, and running Diskwarrior fixed it, but not this time. I ran Norton first, and have since found out that this can create further problems, and that I should have run Diskwarrior first.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is getting to me.
Thanks
Paul

Hi, Paul -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
There is a setting in the General Controls control panel for that, in the section named Documents. The choice of "Last folder used in the application" should be selected to achieve what you want.
Sometimes a preference file gets damaged or corrupted, and the OS will behave erratically. The solution for that is to throw away the preference file and restart; a new one will be created with default settings. In this case, try throwing away the preference file named General Controls Prefs, empty the Trash, then restart. Once rebooted, open the General Controls control panel and reset that option.
If you can not make that setting in General Controls control panel -
Make sure the following are turned on in Extensions Manager: Multiple Users (Control Panels); Multi-User Startup (Extensions); Security Library (Extensions); Security Manager (Extensions). Note that Multiple Users can be turned off within the control panel, it just needs to be in the active set.
Add more memory to General Controls control panel (in spite of its designation, it's actually an application). Doubling the original amount is usually sufficient.

  • I followed your help directions on "Corrupt extension files" under "Unable to install add-ons", foolishly deleting the files you told me to. Now firefox won't open. I tried reinstalling firefox but it still won't open. Now what do I do?

I was trying to install the SEOQuake add on. After clicking install Firefox would hang up saying the script had timed out and asking if I want to stop it or continue. Didn't matter which option I chose nothing would happen. The only way to stop it was to close Firefox and restart. Tried restarting the computer. Still wouldn't install. Tried installing the Outwit add on and got the same error leading me to conclude it was a problem with Firefox, not the add on. I found this help page <http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons?s=addons+won't+install&as=s> and did everything it told me to. Finally at the end I got to "Corrupt extension files". I foolishly deleted the files you told me to and now Firefox won't even start! I tried reinstalling Firefox and it still won't start. Tried restarting the computer. I have no idea how to get back to where I was let alone install the add ons I wanted to install. Please help. At this point I'd just be happy to be able to get Firefox working.

See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile]]
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)<br />

  • Oracle 9i clob segment possible corruption

    Hello all,
We are experiencing some select issues from a table containing a CLOB segment. Since I don't know too much about CLOBs and we are suspecting a possible corruption. What would be the next step besides a DBV on the datafile housing hat table?
I have read that there is a package called DBMS_LOB ... but not sure how to use
    Much appreciated

  • Possible corrupt or injected data

    Hello,
I have a question for the SQL Server security experts.
My scenario is as follows:  I am currently migrating data off a legacy system, and into another.  This system is notoriously hard to work with, and has been severely abused over the years.  Many logical associations were broken, and band aided
back together.  It is a sunset system, however demographic data still needs to be retrieved.
Upon loading the data into a slowly changing dimension in another system, I am running into an issue where the same values will not equal themselves.  I have tried converting the data types, stripping all non-ascii characters from the string data.
I have checked the data lengths, all equal similarly length and stored string data.  I am detecting no hidden characters within the string as well.  There is no reason why this data won't equal itself.  My only conclusion at this point is that
it is either corrupted or injected.
Are there any suggestions on how to detect possible corruption or injection?  I have read many articles around sql injection, and I suspect that I am dealing with binary data injected onto the end of the string data.  However, when I check the
    byte size it looks normal.

Physical corruption you would detect with DBCC CHECKDB
Corrupted foreign keys you could detect with DBCC CHECKCONSTRAINTS
If someone has maliciously manipulated the data in order to conduct any kind of second order attack via SQL Injection or otherwise, it really depends on the skillfulness of the attack how easily one could detect & comprehend that.
Hidden character may also have gotten into the system by badly written applications and imho are not necessarily an indication of an attack.
Maybe you could show us a sample.
If you truly suspect an attack going on though, you should follow your hopefully existing escalation procedures and get the system ready for a forensic investigation by making sure nothing can get changed any more. Unless you want to keep
that system running to try to catch the attacker “live”. But I do not recommend using a production system as a honeypot if you don’t know exactly what you are doing (and probably not even then).

    Hi rockjedi,
In my opinion you should give us a little bit more details about your notebook and operating system.
    What do you think?
Im not sure but I think now its time for reinstalling Windows. You can choose the HDD recovery feature if your notebook does it have or Toshiba recovery disk.

  • Lightroom Corrupt Catalog problems- Help!

Lightroom Corrupt Catalog problems reading/writing from disk when attempting to repair - Help!  I have my LR box in hand and my product keys and license info but can't find the disk. I'm assuming this is the only way to repair.  Suggestions, Comments are welcome and appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!!!

Corrupt catalog will not be fixed by re-installing the Lightroom software (although if I were you, I'd still find that disk!)
If I were you, I would first check a recent backup of your catalog file, and see if that will open (double-click on it in your operating system). If that opens properly, I would just use that file.
If it doesn't open properly, then one trick that sometimes works is to open a blank catalog in Lightroom, then File->Import from Another Catalog and point to the catalog file.
And if that doesn't work, please write back with a lot more details, including operating system, version of Lightroom, and much more detail abou

  • : "Invalid object name '#Temp'.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

     Hi   .
I was creating the  pass the values t in temp tables  though s sis package vs2012 .
First I was taken on executive SQL TASK.
IN EXCUTIVE SQL TASK  . I was write the stored proce:
    Sp;
    reate  procedure  USP_GETEMP2333
    AS
    begin
    Select  eid,ename,dept,salary from emp
    end;
    create table #temp(eid int,ename varchar(20),dept varchar(20),salary int)
      insert into #temp
       exec USP_GETMP02333
       go.
     It was executive correctly.
I was taken another sequence container. In the sequence container iam creating one   executive  sql
In 2nd excutive sql task: sql statements is
    if object_id('emp_fact_sal') is not null
     drop table emp_fact_sal
    select eid,ename as emp_name,sal_bar=
    case when salary<=5000 then 'l'
    when salary >5000 and salary<=7000 then 'm'
    else
    'h'
    end
    into emp_fact_sal from #temp.
and one falt flies  it was taken to designation .
     iam changing  all  connection properties:
     in oldeb connection:
in excutive sal task properties .
    delay validation is true,
and retain connection maner is also true,
and package mode is 64 bit is false.
But iwas excutive in 2nd excutive ql task .
Iam getting this type of errors,
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query " if object_id('emp_fact_sal') is not null
drop ta..." failed with the following error: "Invalid object name '#Temp'.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established
    correctly.
     Please help me

Arthur suggestion works but you shouldnt even be doing this on a SQL Task.
Use a data flow task. You'll have better control over the data that is being transfered and get better performance because no staging table will be used.
Just because there are clouds in the sky it doesn't mean it isn't blue. But someone will come and argue that in addition to clouds, birds, airplanes, pollution, sunsets, daltonism and nuclear bombs, all adding different colours to the sky, this
is an undocumented behavior and should not be relied upon.

  • P7N Diamond (Ms-7510) - Possible chipset heat problem

    Hi,
Have a P7N Diamond (Ms-7510) with possible chipset heat problem.
After looking around I have seen the platic plugs that keep the chipset heatpike in-place are broken.
Would like to replace them but dont know what size and type to get.
    Does anyone know?
Or perhaps there is some other issue with it?
Have seen a few people who clams there is alot of issues with this m/b...
I am a bit stubborn and want to get some life in to this thing! ;-)
FYI I have posted a few others post about this m/b before here...
    Thx

Try checking at hobby shop or hardware store and get some nylon screws of size needed instead. Just measure the hole size or take one of the broken pins with you so you can get the right size. Length shouldn't be much of a problem because if you have get something longer than needed they are relatively easy to cut.
P7N was one of the not so good MBs back then. P45 Platinum was one of the very best though and if you could get your hands on one of them for a good price you would be very happy with it. I know several people with new rigs but their mainstay backups are P45 Plats.

  • A205-S5000 won't boot. Says possible hard drive problem

Laptop won't boot and says possible hard drive problem. Need to recover
personal reports and data, so thinking of removing the drive and using an enclosure
so the data, if still good, can be extracted from the drive by another computer. Question
is, will I be able to create the restore cd's from the hard drive if the hard drive is not the
boot drive ie; attached to a 2nd computer via usb and enclosure.
If it's not possible, I can try to create cd's from a different model laptop (toshiba), same vista os but
what about the product key?  I will try to reinstall the bad drive and try a reboot to recovery mode but
I doubt that is going to work or complete. Idea was to get a new drive and try to install recovery disks.

    Satellite A205-S5000
Recovery discs must be from an identical model. If you can't burn them from that computer, best to order them
       Order Toshiba Recovery Media
    The restored Windows is pre-activated.
