Possible corrupt file?

I've completed a digital painting several years ago.  I backed up my work on a DVD several times throughout the years, but just recently, within the past 2 years or so, I've noticed that a particular painting of mine is corrupt - because upon opening the .PSD, it only displays a small portion of the image at the top, showing what seems to be a Red Channel only.  While I don't consider this a pinnacle of achievements in terms of my work, it documents the progress I've made as an artist since its completion and it's upsetting that I may not be able to get it back.  I was in the practice of creating a JPEG in addition to the PSD, but the JPEG version has undergone several changes that I am currently not happy with.  Basically, the JPEG copy was just for testing out additional techniques to enhance the quality of the image...and many years later, taking a look back on those "changes" I'm extremely dissatisfied with them and want the original copy back.  But, from what I've gathered, this seems impossible as the file appears to be corrupted.  I am using CS5, just for clarification, and PS 7 was probably used to create the painting in the past.
I'll post a screen shot here just to back up what I'm claiming here.

Any help would great be appreciated.  I've inspected whether or not all of the channels were checked, and all 3 of them are, as it was saved in RGB format.  I've been searching for a solution to this problem for years - I figured this would be a last ditch effort of mine since I am thumbing through my archives, re-organizing all of my work and configuring a new and improved method of saving the files (basically saving it as a PSD un-flattened, then flattened, then as a TIFF, then two JPEGs, one Hi-Res & Low-Res - just so this catastrophe doesn't happen to me again).

Thanks for your post!

  • Possibly Corrupt files on my iPhone 3GS?

Hi everyone, hopefully someone can guide me int he right direction.
Last summer I upgraded my 3G to a 3GS, I imported all of my content from my 3G onto my 3GS.
I can exactly pinpoint when the problems started, but here's the list of what has been happening for at least the last 6 months:
    - Native apps (mail/safari) randomly crashing
    - When I go into an out of service area (eg an elevator) it takes at least 2 minutes to reconnect/recognize the network, turning on and off airplane mode works 50% of the time, most of the time I end up having to shut the phone off and on
    - Had a ghost email in my mobileme inbox until a full wipe/restore by the apple store
    - Random crashes/locks and bouncing me to my enter passcode screen
    - BIGGEST ISSUE: When I try to update the firmware to the latest version (I always make sure itunes is updated first), it fails halfway through and then bricks my phone into a restore cycle with an error # that I can't recall, but I know researching it didn't do me any good. This cycle goes on for about an hour before the restore & update finally works.
I went to the apple store finally last Friday to see what they could do for me. All they did was wipe/restore my phone and tell me "don't install any apps".
Within the first 10 hours of use (which is pretty limited without apps) I had Safari crash. Last night I plugged my iphone into my mac to charge, and it proceeded to synch. Immediately after it synched and I tried to use it, my sms app crashed twice upon trying to open it and respond to a message.
I'm not sure if this is possibly a corrupt file in my back up? Or if this phone is just a lemon. It's definitely not caused by any applications that are installed because I haven't reinstalled any.
Does any one have other experiences with something like this? It was suggested by someone at Rogers (my carrier) that it could be a corrupt contact or file? But that doesn't explain the crash before it had synched fully. I have mobileme, so my contacts automatically synched off my Apple address book.

Was your iPhone restored at the Apple store as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, or restored from your iPhone's backup?
If the former, you followed this by restoring your iPhone again with iTunes from your iPhone's backup when returning home?

If your iPhone has not been restored with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, do so. If the same occurs after restoring with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, this will indicate there is a problem with your iPhone and needs to be exchanged under warranty. If the same does not occur after doing so, this will indicate there is a problem with your iPhone's backup.

  • Possible corrupt file...Final Cut crashing

Running final cut studio 2. I have an HDV documentary with roughly 460 hours of footage spread over an Xserve RAID and six glyph drives. The project keeps failing after trouble shooting and splitting the project over six smaller "chapter" projects.
Could this be a corrupt file? If so how do I search for it? Also, have there been a lot of problems with people using glyph drives and HDV projects.
    Thank you

460 hours is a lot. A whole lot, no really, like, lots!
One way you might be able to search for the bad media file would be to temporarily take the media drive offline, open the project, and re-mount the drive to reconnect the clips when the project comes up with the missing files dialog. This will at least alllow you to reconnect files or whole folders one at a time to help narrow it down.
Also, if the problem just surfaced recently, you may be able to go to a previous version or autosave to get back to the point at which the project was able to open.
When you say failing, failing how? crashing, not opening, won't play, locks up? can't export?

  • Downloaded song skips - possibly corrupted file?

Over the last 3 months I have downloaded 718 songs from ITunes without any problem. The last one I downloaded, however, audibly skips and jumps at one point in the file as if a record had been scratched (or portions of the digital file missing...)
Exactly 7:26 minutes into the 3rd Movement of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto the file is bad and then at 8:05 it resumes playing again without any problem. The rest of the albumn is fine - just those thirty seconds or so... Maybe it's a bad download maybe the music file itself is bad.
If I'd purchased a CD at the music store I'd take it back and get another copy or a refund. Does anyone know who I can address this issue to?
I am using a Mac computer with OS X. This is the recording made by Antoni Wit, Jerzy Salwarowski, Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra & Vadim Brodsky.

Contact the iTunes Music Store customer support department through the form at the bottom of this web page and explain the problem to them. They'll probably refund your money and instruct you to try again in a couple of weeks when they've had a chance to get a new copy of the track from the record company.

  • Itunes freezes when I connect my ipod....possible corrupt file?

I reinstalled itunes to the latest version.
And I'm still having the same problem: My itunes freezes whenever I connect my ipod. And when i disconnect it, it unfreezes and it shows "My Ipod" in itunes for like a second then goes away.
Now, when I reinstalled again, i noticed a message saying that Windows is missing components required to fully install Itunes (itunes installed anyway) or something like that. Now, i connected it to my parents' pc and it works fine.
Is there something wrong with my pc? Is there a different program where i can transfer my music to my ipod? (I am using Windows XP btw)
Also is there a way to move all the songs on my ipod to an external hard drive?

    Similar problem here:
When I'm playing songs with iTunes and connecting my 3G 20GB iPod, my computer will hang up completely - screen goes dark and I have to reset my PC.
However, when my iTunes is "idle", i.e. not playing a song or doing anything else, connecting and syncing the iPod will work just fine.
I'm using the newest (6.x) Version of iTunes on WinXP SP2 with a 3G iPod 20GB.

    Hi rockjedi,
In my opinion you should give us a little bit more details about your notebook and operating system.
    What do you think?
Im not sure but I think now its time for reinstalling Windows. You can choose the HDD recovery feature if your notebook does it have or Toshiba recovery disk.

  • Possibility of Corrupt Files

I'm trying to sync my iPod, and recently a lot of my files got corrupted. Why? I have no idea. But I lost all my videos in one folder, a bunch of photos from a recent trip to Canada, and a few hundred songs.
I don't know why the corruption happened, but as I found out while I'm trying to synch my iPod, I get random freezes, then errors as it can't sync a certain file. So I'm trying to delete the corrupt files. ...only I'm having a really hard time because it doesn't tell me which actual files are corrupt, I just know there are some out there.
Are there any ways to finding them and deleting them/fixing them? I've trashed a fair few files (didn't need them anyway) but it would be so great just to be able to find out which ones were causing this trouble so I could get rid of them somehow, it's... really depressing. This laptop has been in the shop countless times and I really don't want to have to go through that again.
For the record, I've run disk repair, restarted, and done some small things like that, to no effect.
    Thanks very much~!

Curses. It's been this long and I still can't think of a witty way to bump my thread. I would mention the alien outside my bathroom window, but my bathroom doesn't have a window. I suppose that's a good thing. Though ventilation would be nice at times.
Anyway, still the same things going on, and Google is apparently not my friend because I can't find anything on this yet, so I'm sort of stuck.

    My ipod shuffle works fine.
    Anybody have any ideas.
    Thanks

try installing de software of that ipod, reinstall de ipod sofware and the itunes, after that go 2 apple.com and download the new updator. then install that too, and if possible redownload the new version of itunes. b4 u do all this , delete the software (old one ) of that ipod and itunes.. only the one that is giving u the problem, meaning b4 u reinstall the software that came with ur ipod, go 2 control panel.2.find add /remove programs.3then delete the old ipod and itunes software. then retstart ur computer. 4 then now go and reinstall the ipod software and itunes that came with ur ipod then after that redownload de ipod updator(new version is march 2006. get this and after that download the new version of itunes. then install all these, then u can also restore ur ipod by clicking on de updator when it opens press restore u will be commanded 2 plug in ur ipod. then follow de instructions. after all these ur itunes should be fine, and ur ipod software should be fine. ur itunes is corrupt , that might be causing the problem.

  • Corrupted files with Keynote 08

    Hi,
I will try to be as clear as possible because the problem I have is potentially dangerous for any Keynote user. I have been a Keynote user for many years now and I use it systematically to make conferences and conventions. It's really fun to work with that software. But a problem has recently occured with the latest version.
Like many independant workers, I use to work at my office and later at home. So I backup my files on a portable HD to finish them later. I use a backup program that saves that perfectly
Many days ago, I wanted to reopen a keynote file at home when I realized that there was something wrong. When the file opened, it showed me the state of the file BEFORE the backup. First I thought I had forgotten to do the backup. But when I got back on the Finder, I saw that Quick Look showed me the most recent version of the file. More, with a right click on the file I opened the package and I saw all the images embeded in my keynote presentation. So I returned to Keynote and noticed somrthing really weird : the thumbnails show the right of the slides, but the slides themselves are wrong. I had no choice but to make the slides again and finally thought I had done something wrong. But the same thing occured today. And I am sure the backup has been done correctly.
I have tried to save the document as another name to see what happens. When I do so the file is saved without the embeded images that were previously in the package. To resume, if your right file weighed 80 Mo with 50 Mo of images, when you save your corrupted file, it only weighs 30 Mo.
There has been problems with Keynote in the past. Some images were "lost" after a backup but were present in the package. But this is REALLY a problem because you simply lose your work.
i f any of you has an answer I would appreciate. And I hope I made myself clear, because even in French, it would have been hard to explain correctly.

I have today encountered a problem opening old Keynote presentations on my new iMac running Leopard. It cannot open any of the old presentations on my machine because it says they are damaged.
I also could not open an old Pages file because it says the file is corrupt and there was a .xml missing. I later managed to open this by searching for it directly through the application "Open" command and following the search path. It then gave the usual " This was created by a previous version of Pages..." and the Save as warning, but it did open when I went this route. (I have now saved this document as Pages 08 and all is well).
There seems to be a bug in the iWork '08 suite when it comes to older documents.

  • Disk problem in MacBook Pro (hardware or corrupted files?)

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a 15" MBP 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB RAM (added 1 to the original setup.)
A few months ago I replaced the original 120 GB hard drive, as it was getting full and making my computer slower. The new one is a 350 GB 5400 rpm Western Digital drive. I did this myself, following the instructions in ifixit.com, as I have done it in the past with other machines, including my wife's MBP, that is working fine.
In the first OS install I used migration assistant and recreated the original user exactly as in the old disk. After a couple of months of use the computer started to get slower and presented permission problems that didn't seem serious (used Disk Utility to check). After a while, there was also a report of problems on disk verification, that at one point couldn't be repaired with Disk Utility. I was able to get rid of the problem for a while using Disk Warrior, but at some point the disk problems appeared again and I had to do a new OS install from zero.
This time I formatted the hard drive writing zeros to correct possible physical errors and did a clean install. Used migration assistant to copy only my user's documents and library. After a couple of weeks of running the laptop without problems, I am having again reports of disk errors that Disk Utility can't repair. Disk Warrior can't access the drive and Tech Tool Pro reports 72 bad sectors.
    My question is:
Is this definitely a hardware problem that will be solved by replacing the hard drive again, or is it possible that this is being the result of some corrupt files on my user's library (as the problem only appears after a while)?

    ign wrote:
Is it normal that the drve appears to be OK after an OS install and that the physical problem only appears after a while?
If you zero it, yes. That's exactly what zeroing does, "mapping" the HD so bad sectors/blocks are not used. But if a HD is dying, more bad areas will show up. It's time to replace the HD.

  • Reading all corrupt files on a CD

I am trying to read files from CDs, some of which are faulty. As it stands, if I copy all the files at one go from a CD to a folder, the copy process stops when a faulty file is encountered. A bit of a bother because then I have to initiate a second copy, starting from the next file.
Is it possible to initiate copying of all files on a CD, and the whole process goes to completion with warnings that certain of the files are faulty and have not been completely copied?

    I assumed as much.
Another problem with copying corrupt CD audio files with Finder is that they will appear as normal on the computer, with the correct time-length displayed, but will actually only contain data up to the corruption. The problem then arises (if you forget that you had an error message for a certain file), that you end up with a corrupt file that is partly playable but stops. If the corruption is near the end of a long symphony, you probably won't realise the problem until you play the file all the way through.
I would have thought if a file was corrupt it shouldn't be saved at all.
Moral: don't use the Finder to copy CD audio files. Use iTunes (with error-correction) or Max.

  • Corrupt files on computer or corrupt ipod?

My first ipod 30 gb would not work because of corrupt files after 1 week. I could not fix it. My second ipod never worked. I uninstalled, reinstalled, etc. Always the corrupt ipod message. I returned it after viewing all the messages on this board. Could it be my computer is the problem, not the ipod? I would really like to use an ipod but have no idea what to do. Any suggestions?
    Dell Dimension 8200   Windows XP

    Always the corrupt ipod message.
what was the precise text of the message? (there's a few different possible ones i can think of.)

  • All of a Sudden, lots of corrupted files

I've never had this issue with lightroom 5.  All of a sudden, I'm getting corrupted files, some of them disappear , and some seem to be corrupted AFTER I've already processed it.  Very odd.  I use a Nikon D7100 with Delkin Devices 64gb SD 633x.  I just got these new Delkin Cards, which up until now, were smokin'!  Now I don't know if its the card or lightroom.  The cards were formatted like usual before I used them.  Any ideas? Thank you in advance.
    Ken

Ok, I got the Delkin card reader and I only had 7 corrupted photos instead of dozens out of 500 imported.  So there's a positive.
As for the question of the RAM upgrade, I got the RAM from Out of This World Computing http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/.  It was installed by UbreakIfix (You Break , I fix).  I know the "Mac" guy over there and there have been no other issues otherwise.  This Macbook flies better than ever.
The fact that you are still seeing corrupted files implies that the reader wasn't the issue. It is possible that the built in reader just maps to different parts of memory than the external one. Normally I would 100% trust RAM from OWC. I've bought memory from them for decades now and never seen a dud. However, you might have some bad memory here. One thing to try is to revert to the old memory and see if you still have the problem. It is strange that you are not seeing massive problems just running the computer though. If images are corrupting that frequently I would expect that to happen to other parts of memory too. Have you checked for a hard disk problem? Open Disk Utility (from /Applications/Utilities) and select the top level of your hard disk. Check if it says "S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified" in the bottom of the screen. Then click on the hard disk icon that represents your internal disk (usually "Macintosh HD") and click "Verify Disk". If there are any errors found, it will tell you how to repair them. If you don't see any errors, try doing a "repair Disk Permissions".
