Possible CRM SDN Forums Restructure

Hello CRM Community,
We have the challenge to now restructure the CRM SDN Forums to better reflect the needs of the CRM Community.
I would like to use this thread to get some feedback on the current structure and possible new structure that may better serve your needs.
Please feel free to update this thread with your ideas.
Thanks a lot for your collaboration and contribution with this feature!

• Has the SDN forum search facility changed?

When in any of the forums I used to be able to search in relation to the forum area that I was in. However, that option seems to have gone and I only have the option shown in the top right corner to search the all forums. For example, when in the CRM WebUI forum and search for 'Remove button from toolbar' I get loads of ALV/ABAP postings from another forum area.
There used to be another search option for the particular forum you were in. Am I alone in not being able to see this?.
I noticed that this sudenly happened about a month back.
Jason

I'll try the solution suggest above, but I should not have to.
One of the prerequsites steps is for us to check SDN before raising a support call. The way the site works now makes this a little harder, or at least more effort.
Regards to all.
I'm sure they'll get it sorted, eventually, especially as we are possibly raising a few more support calls now as many people can't be bothered to go through the extra effort to try and find a solution using SDN. So I guess it's in SAP's favour to get this working ASAP.

Hi
At least the business card should be reachable directly form one's post, shouldn't it? It is now two steps to see it.

• File attachments into sdn forums posts

Hey mates!
I wonder if it's possible (or if not, maybe someone thought about it earlier) to attach some files into a posting to the SDN Forums. It would be quite useful to add a screenshot, or an ABAP-listing.
Any suggestion?
BR,
Alvaro

Hi Alvaro,
We have it running in an internal forum, but it is slow as hell.
If it is really bugging you and you can sign up to become a Weblogger (Weblogs -> Become a Weblogger) there you can load screen shots and then refer to them in your forum posts. You don't need to write a Weblog for that.
Best, Mark.

• Add graph in SDN forum ?

Hi Colleagues,
Is it possible to insert a print screen ? a graph ? in the SDN forum ?
Thanks,

Ok, sorry. I may kindly ask everybody to ignore my comment on the blog image feature. I don't want to be responsible for anybody being guestified.
In most cases a screenshot is not needed anyhow, because we are looking at some ascii text within a SAPGui or browser window.
Another (not so serious) possibility to show graphical content: [Online Ascii Converter|http://www.text-image.com/]

• How to become a Moderator in SDN Forums

Hello All,
When does one qualify to become a moderator in SDN Forums?
Thanks,
Jignesh

This thread has so many topics, I'll need to try to be very specific about which of these threads inside of threads I'm addressing.
Let me start with the problem of "inactive" moderators which Ravi particularly highlights.
Gali (and in the past Craig) kept a list of over 650 moderators for the various topics. Moderators for the most part were SAP employees but about 50 of the 650 folks moderating were non-SAP folks who by merit of their active contributions or by nomination from an SAP employee or nomination by other members of the forum in a particular topic were asked to be a moderator. Moderators submitted a request form and were accredited by topic experts or other SAP contributors.
In the case of SD for example, 2 of the four names I see on the list are from SAP's support group and are employees. If they are "outdated" or inactive, Gali will need to ascertain that with her ERP resource and they should be removed or prodded into activity and/or replaced.
As you can well imagine, keeping track of 650 or more moderators to ensure their "activity" is a pretty daunting task and it is through your comments and suggestions about their levels of activity that we can quality check as we are not subject experts in your individual forum areas: you are.
One another theme here, I agree with those that posted (albeit with a bit of sarcastic humor) that the role of moderator is not so much an acknowledgement and recognition of talents but a challenging chore. And we certainly salute those who enter the coliseum (you know like the gladiators) to fight the good fight of keeping things useful and clean here.
Now if that chore negatively impacts good contribution abilities of the same gladiators, that really should be examined. But I also see a very positive outcome of stepping aside to moderate and contribute less directly and that is that a number of those moderators are actively helping to create new "stars" by encouraging and highlighting and promoting the good activity of others. In other words, they help create new "top topic contributors". And if they aren't doing that, they should be because moderation isn't just about policing; its also about encouraging others.

• General : new user ID not linked to my old user ID on SDN forum

I used to have a user ID on SDN forum & recently I recieved a request from SDN to collaborate my SDN account with SAP Service market place.
I accepted it & since then, all the questions that am posting into forums are being posted with new user ID & it's not the same as the one that i used earlier.
Basically, my old user ID got wiped off after this process.
How do I make sure that my new user ID posts tie with my old user ID.

• SBO SDN forum Width

Hi, I'm really troubled with the width setting of the SBO forum. Is there any way to keep the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the forum to be always visible?
It seems like the forum width is to large to fit to my screen resolution (1024x768)
So if the message is out of screen , I have to scroll all the way to the bottom , then scroll it to the right, and then scroll all the way up again, just in order to be able to read the complete message.
I've included screen shot of the problem with forum setting. Seems like in other forum besides SBO SDN forum, there is no such problem exist.
please take a look at the following link
http://www.angelfire.com/wizard2/melodia/images/Forum_suggestion.bmp

Sorry, Didn't mean to spam the forum, seems like there has been another topic posting for the same matter, and it 's said that the problem will be fixed.
Thx

• Links in SDN forum posts

Hello!
This is probably trivial for most of you, but I just can't do it.
How do I create a link in a SDN forum post? The standard way doesn't work, and tips from the weblog "Weblog formatting tips&tricks" by Mark Finnern obviously don't apply here:
SAP Community
See?
So please enlighten me: how do I do this?
Thanks!
Igor

Hi,
If you don't want a description and just the plain URL shown, you only need the type the URL and all happens automagically. eg http://sdn.sap.com will be shown as link.

• Why is the format of my posting on SDN forum getting messed up?

Hi,
I have a nicely formatted message in Word as usual but when I post it, or do preview, it gets messed up. This is the first time it is happening to me but I have seen other postings like that.
I don't think anyone will read such messge posting. Any help to get it properlyformatted as I post?
Thanks

Yes, I agree that Martin is very courageous and we are lucky to have him on our team and in the community and advocating community needs.
But to your other point:
It seems sometime that you are working for a 20 staff startup and not a Software giant like SAP AG.
You know Olivier, historically SDN did start like a startup (with about that size of a team group as I recall). And I hate to have to remind us of this but sometimes when you are small you are much more agile, responsive, efficient. But that is also because in those early days the "platform" team (our SDN IT) was dedicated to our community needs only, although of course we were a comparatively small community back then.
To further be candid, there are certain elements that get lost or displaced when you become a big, successful community although you can be certain that there remain some of the "original" crew enhanced with newer excellent additions (think Laure, Martin, Moshe, for example).
And core values haven't changed: (connect, contribute, collaborate). But logistics certainly have changed and we all are painfully aware of the shortcomings.
It is art and science to maintain a healthy community as a community grows. From my life experience living in a co-operative (15 years) there are cycles to the life of a community and if a community doesn't evolve and change it eventually implodes.
A lot of its fate is in the hands of its members.
That means the participants are no less "responsible" than the governing body.
If the community "outlives" its purpose, it will shrivel and die.
To your "capacity planning" comment. When the community assets and capabilities were added- blogs to forums, wikis to blogs, thought was given to the environments that would (at the time they were selected) provide the best functions and services. Platforms, capabilities and demands for specific functions also evolve and change.

• SDN Forum points vs Sun Forum Duke Dollars

I believe that a points system is a great way to encourage participation by the community in problem solving.
With the points system in SDN, however, there is room for abuse, for example, by having people you know award points to you on threads.
I personally like the points reward system (Duke Dollars) on Sun's Developer Forums. In this scheme, you work with credits. Every user is given a certain amount of points (Duke Dollars) when they join. When you post a question, you can assign a number of Duke Dollars up front from your available credit as a reward to entice responses. You can also accumulate more Dollars by answering threads which have Dollars assigned.
Every month, Sun gives a gift to the user who has accumulated the most points.
I'm not sure that this solves the problem of users not assigning points for valid help, but, because users are working with limited credit, it does force them to be careful when assigning points, and prevents abuse as that mentioned above.
I would like to hear what other people think about this scheme. Perhaps there are aspects I have not considered.
Regards,
Martin

Would a moderator make it more positive?
Actually Craig went into each of the forums and published a "rules of engagement". Maybe that kind of a "sticky note" post would be the place to remind people about the inappropriateness of redundant questions (across various forums) and the confusion and poor sporting behavior associated with "copied" answers. I can ping Craig with that suggestion to add text if you think it makes sense to "remind" people in each of the respective forums.
Or..to be a little more provocative, we could suggest that community members who have a good track record of participation, collaboration, and exemplary attitude be given the moderator rights in forums where the activity volume might be too overwhelming for an SAP moderator alone to manage and given the rights to move content to a more appropriate thread.
This is what I meant about "self-policing". Also, perhaps the moderators (internal as well as SAP) could identify themselves in a sticky post and invite participants in those designated threads to track "abuses" or issues, thus identifying them and hopefully resolving them publically.
Strange, it reminds me that in old, Puritanical, America, of the 17th century community culprits were subjected to a public dunking or stocks when they broke the law. The purpose being that public condemnation sent a clear message to other "would be" misbehavers.... and thus deterred further bad conduct.
While a rather radical and unpleasant method it was an open way of dealing with abuses to the system.
Perhaps others can offer less extreme and more effective suggestions here
Marilyn
