Possible dead Wallstreet battery

Okay, I've got a 233 mhz Wallstreet. I run it now & then. last time was about a month or so ago.
The battery's not bad. No clock battery, so it tends to drain the battery keeping the settings when shut down.
Last time, it was fine, provided a good 1 1/2 hours of activity. However, I just started it again today, and no juice at all, no charging either. The media bay control strip shows no indication that the system is even detecting the battery - it says the bay is empty. Floppy modules are detected, and the cd bay doesn't detect it either.
Add to that, the battery doesn't even have the blinky "I'm about to die" single light anymore.
So, I'm guessing it might be permanently deceased, but I'd like to know for sure before I go and buy a replacement.
Is there any way to sort of jump-start it? I ran Battery Reset, and that had no effect.
If the battery sits unused and uncharged for a while, can it drain beyond it's ability to work?
Thanks

Good Morning, Andrew,
Thanks for the forgiveness.
My friend whose three Wallstreets I maintain has two batteries that were original to the computers, bought in 1998, and they are still good for a couple of hours. Pretty amazing. System Profiler does not report on these old machines like it does with newer ones so all I have to go by is that they still run light-duty (web mail and surfing) tasks for a couple of hours. The new one from Global (the link I posted) reads around four hours.
Yes, you can certainly ignore these items if you are running the unit as a desktop machine. The PRAM battery is cheaper (I installed two of these) and would be useful in case of a power failure or a full main battery meltdown. Although the info around here is that the PRAM battery can be dead and not cause problems, I found two problems in working on the WSs that went away after i put in new PRAM batts:
1) One computer would not give a display if I booted from retail OSX install disks, Apparently, OSX wanted a different screen resolution than OS9 for the installer, and OS9 could not hold the res settings with a dead PRAM batt. New battery--no more problems.
2) One computer whose battery would work normally in the computer with the new PRAM battery would not work properly in a computer that had the original PRAM batt. The computer would shut down immediately on going off wall power with the main batt reading 100 percent. It would then read zero, then would not charge at all. Then I'd come back to the computer a short time later and find it showing 100 percent and the cycle started all over again. Still the battery worked flawlessly in the two other machines. The owner insisted I install a new PRAM battery even though all the symptoms pointed to a bad power card or PMU. Whaddayouknow? The main battery behaves normally now in that machine, too. That one blew me away. I had no clue that this would help and, to this day, cannot quote you a technical reason for this success.
Installing a new PRAM battery is a semi-pain in that you have to pop the top deck to get to it. The old machines develop brittle plastic after so many years and the odd of breaking some delicate part of the top deck is rather high.
If you are interested in reviewing the steps involved in changing the PRAM batt, review this most excellent take-apart guide:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Wallstreet/3
Clicking any photo therein gives you a nicely magnified view.
Not for the faint of heart, to be sure and requires a modified #00 Phillips screwdriver and a small Torx driver.
If the WS is not mission-critical, using it as a desktop for old times sake may be a good approach.
Regards,
Allan

  • Possibly dead CMOS battery

    Good evening all,
I'm the proud owner of a Powerbook G3 "Wallstreet" computer, model no. M7109LL/A. I haven't used the laptop in some time and I noticed that now each time I power up the computer the date and time resets. I believe this may be a failure of the CMOS battery but when I removed the keyboard to get to the guts of the system I couldn't locate such a battery. I can confirm that the date and time will reset only when the unit is unplugged from the wall and the main battery has definately failed as it will not charge nor will the computer draw power from it.
Can anyone tell me what this root of the problem is and perhaps how I may go about resolving it? Thank you!

    Vivian,
The Wallstreet does have an internal, rechargeable backup battery for maintaining PRAM, time/date, etc; its main purpose is to allow a short period of sleep while swapping out main batteries. Here is an article describing it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24801?viewlocale=en_US
If your main battery is dead and you unplug the power adapter, a new, fully charged internal battery will only last a few hours. Replacing this battery requires almost a complete teardown. Your only solution is to replace the main battery or always keep the powerbook connected to the adapter. A fully charged main battery will maintain the same settings as does the internal backup battery, and its capacity will do so for weeks with the powerbook turned off.

  • Wallstreet Battery Dead or Not???

I had considered my Wallstreet battery as dead. It had no lights and I have a red x in OS 9 and a battery with an x in OS 10. Computer will not run on battery at all. However, since I have started using the Wallstreet again, The battery now shows two lights. Battery Reset says that the battery has been reset but the two lights stay on. I still have x's on the battery icons. Was I right in the first place, or do I have another problem?

    hello,
having the same problems it is hard to understand since noone really can answer and everyone tells u to try another computer which it is nonsens unless u're tech and have severals around! but anyway if we had another powerbook it might have the same symptoms or worse!!!
I bought several batteries on ebay, got some desagrement and despointment but realised the PRAM battery was dead and this is causing trouble to the powerbook and the rechargeable battery. I bought a new one at www.welovemacs.com and changed it (if u have dates problems when leaving the computer unplugged for a while or in another occasion then this is it) but I guess u have to!
This is pretty tough to change but checking the instruction on www.ifixit.com and most downloading their PDF guide onto another computer so u can read through while dessassembling the powerbook u'll be fine but be very careful as this is not very easy and the case is fragile but with a pen and lots of patience it will do and u'll notice a difference in the powerbook (u have to leave the computer for a minimum 8 hours to allow the PRAM getting charged then use the comp again.
SO u're gonna tell me and the rechargeable battery well I haven't found one yet working but I received one this morning and check that again.
So I'll let u informed but not many people seems to care about that powerbook anymore and we all have the same trouble with the age of those batteries. But few things can be changed one after one for a nice cost at welovemacs and Ifixit which will lead us to get another working batteries!
    good luck
PS: it seems the new batteries made these days are hard to work well and cost a fortune...

  • Hardware test CD / Wallstreet battery behaviour 2

    Hello,
First of all I'd like to know if Apple did release an Hardware test CD for the Wallstreet powerbook 1998 233MHZ ?!!
Is it possible to find one?!
The reason of this post is to add for the "wallstreet battery behaviour" thread i have left and 100 people watched but I can't write on it anymore... if you read it, I haven't got refunded for that broken battery bought on ebay but I'm sure it has been hacked to show full state.
Since I can't buy all fake working batteries and don't want to buy the new made that obviuosly don't work well I wonder if testing the computer with the hardware test CD would help me diagnose if the battery is dead or any of the component is failling.
    regards

Thanks for your kind thought and link but I already used battery reset I found in another post long time ago before leaving my own posts!!!
It does work but the battery doesn't charge and the icon is still red crossed!
The thing is when the power is cut or the computer unplugged the date is set to a year backward of forward the actual year (eg: 2038 , 1993, 1904,1974,2001...)
I then tried all the possibilities with key combination to reset Pram, PMU ect... (n battery reset) what had changed is the rechargeable battery, it doesn't charge but when the computer is cold and unplugged if I press the button on the front the leds lit by cliping the first one to full power and the rest very low which means there still power going through but can't be charged.
Cos of the Date problem and also I read an Apple article about the fact dead Pram batteries can cause rechargeable batteries to die and so becoming defecting, I have decided to buy a new Pram and I'll probably find another reason why the rechargeable battery doesn't work.
This means I have once again to buy another rechargeable battery to chase the problem and solve the issue so I can carry my laptop and keep my date running!!!
    regards

  • Wallstreet Battery Won't Charge

I just got a new battery for my old Wallstreet. The battery was fully charged when it arrived, and it ran my Powerbook for over four hours. But now it won't recharge.
The Power Adapter has been plugged in since late last night, after I ran the battery down as a test.
The Wallstreet runs fine while plugged it. When I unplug the power adapter, the screen dims and I get the warning to plug it back in or else.
The battery indicator in the menu bar started out all red yesterday afternoon, but now it shows mostly blue with a white top and a tiny red bottom, with a red arrow pointing to the top of the red.
When I press the button on the battery proper, one green led lights.
The battery level indicator in the Control Strip is unusual in that it shows the symbol for two batteries, even though I have only one. The left bay (the bay the battery is actually in) indicator shows plugged-in, instead of the lightning-bolt, and the level indicators are all white. The right bay (which actually contains a floppy drive) indicator shows a plain white battery symbol and the level indicators are all white. Swapping the battery and the floppy drive reverses these symbols in the control strip.
    I have tried:
    a) Zapping the P-RAM (reboot holding command-option-P-R until three consecutive chimes, then release).
    b) Resetting the Power Manager (shut down, hold shift-function-control-power for 5 seconds, note that the sleep light blinks, wait 5 seconds, press Power).
    c) Running Battery Reset 2.0, then removing the battery for 60 seconds, then reinserting the battery.
    d) Trashing Energy Saver Preferences and Control Strip Preferences, then restarting.
    e) Swapping the bays for the floppy and the battery and rerunning all the above.
    All these had no effect.
I also tried to reset the NVRAM, but the instructions I found (reboot holding command-option-O-F until the Open Firmware window appears), didn't open the Open Firmware window.
I read about an Apple product called "Intelligent Battery Recondition" and even found its Read Me file in the Apple Knowledgebase. But I could not find the product in Downloads.
I heard about and downloaded Battery Amnesia, but, after reading its Read Me file, I decided that it doesn't actually address my problem and could interfere with this diagnosis.
I ran Software Update and it found nothing new.
    I'd appreciate any suggestions.
    --Gil

Thank you, Denis, for the references to the software stashes. They are a comfort against future Times of Trouble.
I think maybe Intelligent Battery Reset (IBR) is the same as Apple Battery Reset (ABR), no? I used an application which I found in my Wallstreet's Applications folder (Utilities subfolder) called "Battery Reset 2.0", with "Copyright Apple Computer" in the Get Info->Version property. It had the effect of reducing my poor, weak battery's red bottom to the very bottom, but did not cause the battery icon to show charging (a lightning bolt).
I also considered VST's EMMpathy, but I couldn't convince myself that it was designed for the Wallstreet battery.
Thanks for the suggestion of a possible mechanical fault in either the power adapter plug or the logic board. I have not pursued this, partly because the instructions to open the case and examine the Power Adapter logic board are a little scary, and partly because I have found a temporary workaround. I may pursue this further.
Thanks also for the reference to the idiosyncrasies of Li-Ion batteries. I shall study it further.
JPL, thanks for the comforting observation about the control strip icons, and for reminding me that some Wallstreets will not charge while running. This turns out to be the case with mine. It charges fine if I will only close the lid. While this isn't exactly what I would have wanted, it does provide me with an acceptable workaround.
So, now, the battery is all red and all four little green lights light up when I push the button. I consider this problem essentially solved. But there seems to be more...
Your message, JPL, suggests there may be more detail that would allow my Wallstreet to charge even with the case open. I suppose that this detail might include opening the case and getting at those solder points that Denis mentioned. If you wouldn't mind posting this information, I would like to consider it.
Grant, thank you for pointing out that a standalone charger is a reasonable-cost item. I shall look for one on eBay.
Thank you all for your most welcome support. I now have a fully charged battery, a reasonable workaround, and some more ideas to try. Who could ask for anything more? You guys are a great help.

  • Is there a app that will tell all apps that are running and possibly how much battery power they use?

Is there a app that will tell all apps that are running and possibly how much battery power they use?

You don't need an app to do this.  Here's how you get the battery info.  Go to Settings>More>Battery. This will show you all the active apps and their individual battery usage.

  • 2010 mini logic board reset with dead coin battery

2010 mini will not see ram on start up; one beep & one blink. and again every 3-5 seconds. thats all. would, or could a  dead auxillary battery cause this ? have replaced ram with known good ram.
mini will not post, boot etc:

I doubt it's the battery, I haven't seen that cause what you're seeing.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2674 lists that it's bad or no ram.
So, it's either the ram isn't fully seated, the ram is bad, or the ram slot on the mlb is bad.

  • Dead PB Battery causing system operation issues ??

Hi, I bought a 1Ghz DVI Titantum G4 on Craigslist over the weekend. The system has what appears to be a completely dead PB battery that is 5+ years old (there is writing on the back of the battery "May 2005").
It came with a 3rd party 45W adapter/charger and the system will run from that just fine.
Mac OSX 10.4.11 says the battery is charged at 96%, but when I try to run the PB from the battery, nothing happens. I press the little button on the bottom of the battery and it indicates a fully charged battery. However the System Profiler shows no amperage from the battery on the power portion of the profiler. I checked the PRAM battery with a multimeter and it still has a charge.
Will leaving this apparently dead PB battery in the system cause other operational issues ? Any thoughts ?
    Thanks

Keeping a dead battery in the computer won't cause any problems, but the fact that it's dead will, of course, mean it won't serve to prevent certain kinds of problems that wouldn't arise if it were a good battery.
In particular, you probably won't be able to unplug the AC adapter and transport the Powerbook for more than a handful of minutes before the PRAM battery is completely drained, and then the drained PRAM battery may prevent the machine from starting up until it is recharged — which will go very slowly if a dead main battery is in place and the computer is trying in vain to recharge that too. The main battery gets charging priority, and the PRAM battery gets charged after the main battery is full. If the main battery never charges, the PRAM battery may not either, unless the main battery is removed.
It's also true that in the event of an AC power outage while you're working, the dead battery won't fulfill its usual function as an uninterruptible power supply. The computer will instantly shut down, and whatever you're working on that hasn't been saved will be irrevocably lost. If the battery were good, you might not even notice the outage.
If the computer is just going to sit on a desk and be permanently connected to AC power, you can leave the dead battery in it — except after a power outage, when you'll need to remove it for 5-6 hours to give the PRAM battery time to recharge in its absence. On the other hand, the only real reason to keep a dead battery in the machine is to prevent foreign matter or objects from getting inside the battery compartment. There's no other advantage to having it in there.

  • Possible dead battery on late 2007 MacBook white?

Yesterday my girlfriend put her late 2007 MacBook (running 10.5.1) to sleep and when she went to wake it up it would appear to have died/shutdown and then tried to start up. There was a whir of the DVD drive and then it started to play the boot sound and then just cut out.
On further attempts to boot it (from battery) now does the same thing. Though if the power is plugged in then it starts OK. I've tried an SMC reset, but that doesn't appear to have helped.
The MacBook was purchased in December 2007. Current battery info is as follows:
    Battery Information:
    Model Information:
    Manufacturer: DP
    Device name: ASMB016
    Pack Lot Code: 0002
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 102a
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0200
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 3310
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4019
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 285
    Battery health: Good
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 1073
    Voltage (mV): 12535
Does all this point to a dead battery?
    Cheers,
    Jay

After a bit more looking it may be the same problem as described on post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1954449&start=0&tstart=0 as we've been away for a week. Also the battery is the same model number (although not firmware) as the one listed in the info for Battery Updater 1.4.
First things first, I need to backup then upgrade the MacBook to 10.5.8 as the Battery Updater 1.4 requires 10.5.6 or later. Then try the Battery Updater and a charge to see what happens and if all else fails maybe a visit to Apple (eveb though AppleCare is long gone) as the battery is below 300 cycles which some people have got Apple to replace as a faulty battery.

  • Is my battery possibly dead?

I've had this MacBook for over a year, which means it isn't under warranty anymore. :[
Anyway, recently it started shutting off when the battery wasn't plugged in. The toolbar at the top tells me the battery is charged at 100% and when you press the button on the battery itself, all the little dots light up green. I'm not really sure what the problem is because the computer recognizes the battery and tells me that it's fully charged, but it shuts off if the a/c adapter is disconnected.
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3311
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3310
    Amperage (mA): -6
    Voltage (mV): 12564
    Cycle Count: 438
I don't know if those stats are normal or what.
Someone please help me and I will be most grateful.

With a cycle count of 438 it's most certainly done...they're only rated for 300.
    Time for a new one.

  • Fix & follow up on Topic: Powerbook G3 Wallstreet Battery issues

My answer was VERY simple! I too had a Wallstreet G3 that the battery suddenly stopped charging. Bought two new batteries, still the red X through the menu icon. Read forum after forum about logic boards, PRAM battery replacement (mine is dead)Battery Reset v 2.0, resetting power manager, loose contacts inside bay, copper (I think) interferring with A/C port, faulty power adapter, etc. & addressed the easy ideas putting off any inside hardware fixes.
Today decided to revisit a fix so I could break down and order whatever parts I thought I needed & put a battery in & the red X on the battery icon appeared, but then went away - so very briefly - then back to the red X. So having read today again about faulty power cords & remembering the copper touching the port problem, reached back & wiggled power cord to be sure it was pushed in OK & suddently the screen dimmed & I got the message window that I am running on reserve power & unless I plug into A/C right away the computer will shut down...words to that effect which meant that I had lost A/C power to the port just by a simple wiggle; so I pushed it a bit and held it in & the screen brightened so I knew it was back on A/C! After experimenting with pushing it in & around some more & having it dim, get the message & then come back on, when I left it on I noticed the battery icon had the lightening flash on it and the power strip showed the right bay battery was charging!! I WAS THRILLED!
Got to the root of the problem & did not spend a dime or replace any hardware! It has been an hour now (I haven't touched the power cord since)& it is still charging with the icon 1/3 filled with red and the first of the 5 blank indicators for the right bay in the power strip filled gray.
    Hallelujah!

Thank YOU so very much for taking the time to tell me about the DC power inlet because I found your answer after troubleshooting whether or not I thought I needed a new power cord or had a faulty port because I discovered when applying pressure to just the power cord housing right at the point of entry being careful to not disturb the actual cord it still caused the computer to behave erratically so I think you are absolutely right.
I purchased this from e-Bay a couple of years ago and am thrilled with it (am a Mac user from its very beginning and have had several open to swap harddrives, upgrade memory, etc.) so have been researching replacing the PRAM battery since a new one came with the computer which former owner didn't put on and since I have discovered it IS a TOTAL teardown I know why, but if my husband is comfortable soldering a electronic, I'll have him follow your directions when I get to the PRAM battery.
How would I recognize what needs soldered and any tips I should know on type of solder, etc? Any online fixit photos you can point me to? I'm all set on the tear down.
    Thanks again!!!

  • Possible cure for battery issues

    hi
first of all i dont own the device yet
    i am user of 5530,5800,n8,c7,701
i was looking farword to bring in my hands the first nokia wp7 but due to features missing and (in my opinion) little overpriced at the moment(as sim free) i will wait for the next nokia wp7
but being for a while in nokia forums i deside to write this atricle with my opinion about the battery issue (IF IT IS) with the 800
after reading many users facing problem with battery  in different revious and forums about my N9 last longer or my N8 etc i deside to do a test with my current in use 701(1300milliamber battery and the brightness screen that nokia offers right now)
i left all day the phone connected to 3g and gprs data with about 5 min calls couple of textsand little browsing fmobi, little use the default browser, little use apps which connects to internet ...all these  for about 1,5 - 2 hrs
it did last about 12 hrs same as some users with the lumia
Now if you dont belive me TRY THE SAME TEST BY YOUR SELFS
what i have understand (as i dont own the device) is that perhaps by default or out of the box (and especially the branded phones from the providers) is that featurs like wifi or data, nokia account, market place bing etc must be ON
if was the same issue with my 701 it will not go too far of course
what nokia possible can do is to do a frimware update which in start up or rebooting the phone....dark them, wifi, data, bluetooth, internet connection should be off by default like in symbian
i am sure the upcoming new customers will not have future complains
but i belive this is important as some poeple dont have the knowlege to do all these to turn off manual, especially in a new UI that they are using first time (wp7) and of course having a new phone most of them especially the non experts can think the battery drains so easy if all are ON
******* or at least nokia should make it like symbian to turn off automatic after closing apps, face, twitter, email etc
    thanks for your time reading
for me after my Xmas bonus(if any lol)  i will go for a windows phone(sim unlocked)either if nokia or other brand
of course i can wait for the next nokia model not because of the battery issue but i prefer in windows phone 7 bigger screen
    thanks again

I must agree with your thinking...
When I first got my C7, battery wasn't lasting a day...
And the reasons was the ones you said...
e-mail was keeping data on, WiFi was always looking for a connexion
I won't say that the Lumia 800 can't have any battery issues, but first of all, it's our use that kill off the bettery...
Setting e-mil to work only once per hour, setting WiFi off when not used...
Only those 2 option give a bette life to the battery...

  • Problems with stuck/dead pixels, battery life, ICS, and other problems

    Stuck/Dead Pixels:
I bought my Droid Razr at around the 21st of December last year. On or around Christmas, I found a bright red pixel on the very bottom of my screen. Unlucky for me, I was leaving for Florida on Christmas Night. I got back on December 31st. Sometime in the first week of this year, I visited my verizon store and told the customer service lady that I had a dead pixel on my screen and had just bought it. But, she told me that she needed the manager to fix this and there was no manager there. For the next week I was busy with school and sports etc and was not able to go back to the store. It was now past my 14 day return period. So I decided, its only one pixel, most people won't notice it anyway. So here I am 5 months later, just starting to discover more pixels dying on my screen. I now have the one bright red one, two light blue ones, and one dark red. I have no idea what the return policy is on defective phones, and the verizon site is designed so that you can't find anything. And an FYI, I have tried stuck pixel removers and other apps, which  haven't been successful.
    Battery Life:
I have also been finding more problems with my phone. The battery life is terrible when 4G and even 3G are on. I actually see no difference in battery consumption between 3G/4G.  My battery dies  about 4-5X faster when data is turned on, compared to using no data. I know it isn't because of the apps I installed since when I use WiFi, the battery is alright. I also make sure that my RAM isn't above 400MB, so that the processor doesn't use a lot of battery. I feel like I completely wasted my money buying the Razr. Mainly because of the fact that the Razr Maxx was announced two weeks later, which has about 80% more battery. Not only this, but I've seen the Razr selling for only ONE PENNY on amazon over the past month and it still is. I payed $300 on my Razr.
    Ice Cream Sandwich:
After these major problems comes another one, that I bet all Razr and Razr Maxx customers are still thinking about. When will I get Ice Cream Sandwich? It is very disappointing when you are told that you will be getting an upgrade in early 2012, and are still wondering where your upgrade is 5 full months in. From what I understand, we won't see an upgrade until the end of June, since Motorola has posted on their website that "rollouts" would begin in the second quarter. Even if they release it by the end of June, when will it get to your phone? Maybe another week or two for some people. This is another thing that I feel I wasted my money on. My brother told me to get the Nexus because of ICS, but I trusted Motorola that they would upgrade my phone in a timely manner. WRONG.
    Phone Freezing:
One more problem that I've had is that the phone will freeze. Usually you only need to turn the screen off and on, but once in a while, you have to completely reboot your phone. When I was coming back from Florida, right as I was about to get home, my phone completely froze. I was about to go return it, but after about 15-20 minutes, it became unfrozen.
    Motion Sensor not functioning:
Another problem, an annoying one, is that sometimes the motion sensor that controls portrait and landscape mode will just stop working. Some of the games I play are completely dependent on the motion sensor. It is very embarrassing  when you are trying to show off to an iPhone friend and major components of your phone aren't working. They always tell me "why didn't you get an iPhone?". And I really just wanted to have a phone that didn't look like everyone else's, but I guess that comes at a cost. When the motion sensor stops working, I have to shut down my phone and restart, which takes a couple minutes.
    Problems with camera:
My last problem would be with the camera. Sometimes if you bring the camera close to something, like a barcode, it will keep trying to focus, but never will. Another problem is photo quality in low light situations. It seems like the camera can't focus because it goes from being very dark into being bright because of the flash. I doubt this can be fixed because it's hardware, but a potential fix could be having the option to keep the LED light on during picture mode, that way the camera will be able to focus correctly.
    In Conclusion:
I really just want someone to tell me how to return my phone for a new one, due to the dead pixels. I also wish I could be upgraded to the Razr Maxx because of the poor battery life on the Razr, but from what other people are saying, that probably won't happen. And finally, if anyone has more info about Ice Cream Sandwich, that would be awesome.

Well since it's a Manufacturing Error it should Fall under your Warranty if you got one with your Razr. You know you can Call C.S. an they can Assist you with the Matter on it.. Just remember to have another phone so they can Trouble shoot the One that is Experiencing the Issue an when you talk to them go over thing. An they should send you C.G.A.N unless they request you to send it in before you get anther one. If you feel Better going to the Store try that. And Good Luck..

    Hello, gypsumspring.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are the best resources to go through when experiencing this issue.
    Resolving issues
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.

  • Why does ipod screen flicker and shut down?Possibly need new battery?

Ipod screen flickers, but music still plays. Then it will shuy down. I ahve restored it , but still does this. My 9 year old lives on this ipod, he is going through withdrawal now!  Possibly new battery? Thanks

Might as well be a hardware defect, especially if you can still listen to music after the screen shuts down.
To make sure it is not the software, set it up as new device, without using the latest backup afterwards.
