Possible 'desktop-to-laptop' switcharoo

Time's-a-comin' when I'll need to think about upgrading my Mac -- currently one of the early G5 towers (2GHz x2, 2GB RAM) and now approaching its 4th birthday.
It's stood me in good stead and is still going strong, but 4 years is 4 years, a reasonably long amount of time when it's your professional equipment.
Now, my natural first instinct was to get a Mac Pro. But I'd /also/ quite like a laptop, probably a 15" Macbook Pro, for client meetings and presentations. And I suddenly wondered if I could do away with the desktop machine altogether and just get away with owning a Macbook Pro.
So here're the questions:
1. My G5, with a Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card, is connected to 2 good sized monitors -- an Apple Cinema Display 23" (1920 x 1200) and a Formac flatscreen (1600 x 1200). Would the Macbook Pro be able to drive both those monitors simultaneously at full resolution?
(Side question: I've never owned a laptop... does the lid have to be open in order to use it in this way -- ie. treating it like a desktop machine connected to external monitors? Sorry if that sounds incredibly ignorant but, like I say, I've always been desktop-bound)
2. I know that machines have sped up a lot since I got the G5, but laptops are never as quick as their desktop equivalents, so I wondered if anyone could provide any information about how the current Macbook Pros stand up in performance terms alongside the G5? I've looked at the reviews in MacUser etc but the benchmark tests never compare the new machines with anything like mine, as mine is so old now.
I'd hate to fork out for a Laptop solution over a desktop one only to find that it's no faster (or even, horrors, SLOWER) than my current machine, even if I can take it to the garden.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks.

Rick,
I, too, migrated to a Macbook Pro from a multiple-monitor desktop setup (last G4 DP iteration, 9800 pro). For me, the speed jump was even more dramatic than yours would be.
I can tell you that, for me, the loss of some Desktop space was by far outweighed by the portability factor, which might go much deeper than you think. "Going portable" can be a radical paradigm shift, a completely different way of life. In fact, I still have the desktop station, but it is never used (sadly). I even have the ability to connect one of my external monitors to the Macbook Pro, but I have never felt the desire to do so. The idea of being tied down to one location is just not attractive anymore.
Internal disk space, copious on the desktop system, has been compensated for by external drives. I found that this becomes a non-issue. And, I find it much more convenient to add storage to "my world" by simply going out and purchasing a new, and usually larger and less expensive, drive.
Obviously, the biggest issue is the loss of Desktop real estate. How this will affect you has everything to do with what you do on a regular basis, whether the extra room you currently have truly makes your workflow more efficient. It is likely that the soon-to-be-available "Spaces" will close the gap a bit on this score, as you would be able to use it to effectively compensate for the loss in Desktop area represented by a portable. Hmmm.
Scott
EDIT: I do think that the concept of a "removable desktop system" is not really that useful or valid, not the way you were originally thinking. Rather, a Macbook Pro (or any portable) represents a change in lifestyle, and it is much more useful to think of it this way. If this lifestyle/workstyle change is attractive to you, you might not regret the trade-off inherent in the change.

  • Is it possible to transfer emac HD info to a later mac desktop or laptop?

I want to take my internal HDD from my emac and transfer the info off that to a later mac desktop or laptop.
    Is that possible?
I have the internal HDD plus I have all its info backed up on a 400 Firewire / USB external HD.
My OS X is 10.5.8 and I have the original 10.3.5 discs as well as the Leopard 10.5.1 disc.
I would like to retain my present OS as I don't like the later Operating Systems.
    Is that even possible?
I have no idea how it would work so I'd be grateful for any help.

10.6 is ever so much nicer than 10.5. I stuck at 10.6 on my Intel iMac because I thought I needed Rosetta to run an older version of Creative Suite. When I decided to leave CS on an older G4 Mac, that reason to keep 10.6 faded.
Then the family bought two new Macs that came with Mtn Lion 10.8. Although there are a few things I find a little to "new" or "socially-networked" (i'm not) they are minor enough to make me seriously consider moving my computer there also. And I'm about as picky as they come.
If you have old software that requires a PowerPC Mac, you should keep the old eMac in service if possible
PS: I think Allan Eckert meant to type "cannot boot" instead of "can boot."

  • Is there a way to get Newstand to show up on my desktop or laptop screens?

I am starting to use Newstand and I think it is a great service, but is it possible to get the magazines to show on the larger screens of the desktop or laptop computers in addition to the IOS5 devices?

Apps and books sync across devices fine but not anything in the newsstand.  I always thought it should but not the way it works for me. In the same session I can buy a book and magazine. Book shows up on both devices but magazine only on the device purchased.   I do software testing for a living. I've run all the scenarios and everything syncs fine except magazines. Fortunately I don't see what use for the against because I can get paper at 1/2 the cost, but it seems like a nice idea, it just doesn't work consistently.
iCloud is definitely still having issues. While I only use for syncing, photo stream regularly disappears from my iPad every cople days for an hour or two and then comes back. It's never disappeared from my iPhone.

  • I can't read my eBooks I purchase from iTunes on my desktop or laptop.  Do I need to go Amazon?  Kindle?

Is there a future upgrade or availability to read eBooks purchased from iTunes on my desktop or laptop Mac?
If not, I am just going to get the free Kindle application and buy all of my ebooks from Amazon as I can read them on any Mac.
I purchased a book from Apple yesterday so that I could read it as a break during my work day at my office and it would not open.  I checked and sure enough, you can't read books on your desktop Mac using Apple software.  I tried the Adobe Digital software and a couple of others but the protection on the ebook prevented anything but my iPad or, if I had one, iPhone from reading it.
Considering that I spent many thousands on getting the best Macs for work and only hundreds on the pad, it is just a little irritating that I can't read a book on the pro machinery but can on the consumer toy.

We don't know what Apple plans on doing to change this (and it may not be just Apple but more likely the publishers, since Apple would, of course, do whatever it could to maximize sales/profits).  Right now you can only read Apple books on mobile devices. Sure, buy them from Amazon if you want to read them on the computer. We don't work for Apple so we're pretty impartial on this kind of advice.
You might also see what your library can offer.  My wife can browse the county library from her iPhone, borrow e-versions, and read books on it too.  Free!

  • How do I setup a wireless file sharing network with a desktop and laptop?

    Here are the specs.
Desktop, 1 Ethernet, hooked to Wireless router and is my main computer. XP Professional
    Router, Wireless Linksys WRT54GL
Laptop, Wireless card and Ethernet. XP Home
Both the Desktop and Laptop can use the internet. The internet can be accessed by both computers. I have tried everything from creating a network via windows, messed with that for a couple days, tried programs and messed with them for a few hours.
I can sometimes see the other computer, when I deleted the programs I had to redo it, and so on. I made the folders I wanted shared, through the share menu when you right click on them, and they show up on the other computer, but I can't access them. It says I don't have access rights and to contact the administrator, but IM the administrator.
    So, what do I do?

Disable all firewall on both the computers ....
Try to ping one computer to another ... see if it works ....
Also you can try this link ..... useful for enabling the sharing of files in a network ...

  • I am new to LR and have it set up on a Mac desktop and laptop.  On the laptop, the Basic function under Develop simply disappeared.  I am lost.  Help.

Question:  I am new to LR and have it set up on a Mac desktop and laptop.  On the laptop, the Basic function under Develop simply disappeared.  I am lost.  Help.

It's a common issue. The Basic panel is merely hidden.
Hiding/unhiding panels is actually a feature of Lightroom but it is unintuitive - few people know it exists - so most newcomers are thrown when a panel somehow gets hidden.
Right-click anywhere in the right hand side panel area and a context menu will appear.
Click the Basic option to make the Basic panel re-appear.

  • How do I move PSE 9 from desktop to laptop after I install new PSE11?

Just received PSE 11,  want it on my desktop and then move PSE 9 from desktop to laptop?  It there a sequence that will prevent problems?

First make a full backup in PSE 9 using the organizer's backup command, then install PSE 9 on the laptop and restore the backup there. If all is well, you can then deactivate PSE 9 on the desktop if you don't want it there anymore (not required, unless you've already installed it on a third computer). When you install PSE 11 it should find and update your catalog on that for you.
If you don't use organizer, it doesn't really matter how you do it.

  • Working with Lightroom between a Windows desktop and laptop

Please forgive me if there appears to be an obvious answer to this question.  I'm sure a lot of it has to do with work flows.
I have both a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit desktop and laptop both with Adobe CC (Photoshop CC 2014 & Lightroom 5.6) installed.
I always treat my desktop as my "Main" machine as it holds ALL of my 10,000 odd images all stor ed in a folder structure.
As a very new Lightroom user, I'm slowly starting to bring all these images into a LR catalogue folder by folder, but this will take some time.
My actual question is how can I edit a photo on my laptop in LR but ensure that the edited image is stored back in my Lightroom Catalogue on my desktop?   I hope this question makes sense.
I don't store all my images up onto the cloud seeing we're talking just over 100GB.  It's not like LR Mobile where one can select an image or collection to Sync and my understanding is that it appears on your Lightroom Mobile; I'm an android person and so yes,  am STILL waiting for an android version of Lightroom Mobile
Thank you all for your patience with a newbie LR user

Do the editing on the laptop, then use the Lightroom command File->Export as Catalog, transfer the resulting files to the desktop, use the Lightroom command File->Import from Another Catalog

If you have a tablet that runs full Windows 8 - not Windows 8 RT, which is limited.
And if you install the full Adobe Reader for Windows, not the special Adobe Reader Touch for Windows 8.
Then you will have the same features as a desktop.
