Possible failing HD??

Hey all,
So I am having all kinds of odd issues with my Powermac G5 dual 1.8. Different apps just stop working and I jut get the spinning ball, some just crash, alot. I have tried repairing permissions, it finds many errors, says they are fixed, but if I run it again, the same errors are there. I even tried booting off my osx 10.4 cd and doing a repair permissions, and they show fixed until I reboot.
Along with all this my powermac will no long awake from being asleep. I have to power cycle it. I have tried a fresh install of all my apps, including os x. No luck...help! This is starting to feel like a windows pc...

Seems I spoke too soon, I have had my mac home for less then an hour from the Apple store and safri froze and gave me the spinning beachball, then I got the black screen telling me to power off my mac. Here is the crash info I got when I rebooted:

• Possible Failing MacBook Pro 15" (mid 2007) B(lack)SOD?

Yeah, yet another thread about the NVIDIA card. But! The screen goes black sporadically! The laptop screen and not my external monitor fails, sometimes comes back on again. A reboot used to help. Then it failed completely, I couldn't even get a signal during booting. Luckily my external monitor still worked so I could run a last backup.
I called Apple Support and I was asked to clear the PRAM and hold down the power button for 10 seconds without power. After the reset, I could see the computer boot up, log in, but after a few seconds the screen went black again. The support guy seemed stumped and gave me a case number.
I left the computer on the whole day, and came back only to find that the screen was on a again. Now it seems to be working perfectly again, but I am scared that it might happen again when I really need the computer (during a presentation or something).
A quick recap:
- laptop display is on, i can change the brightness, OS X detects it
- video to the laptop display disappears sporadically
- external display works in every case
Is it possible that my 8600M card is failing? Anyone else with a MBP m07 and a black screen of death experience these symptoms?

This sounds more like a display issue than a GPU issue. Is this a new MacBook Pro? If not... which version do you have? The next time your display goes black... look at it up close... or place the back of the display up towards a light (the the light can shine through the Apple logo on the lid) and see if you can see anything. It sounds as if either your backlight or your display may be failing (especially since you're fine on an external display).

• Possible Failing Hard Drive...advice for moving forward

I've been having lengthy delays caused by spinning beach ball of death and decided to get serious about my back-ups while I figured out what was wrong. In addition to Time Machine, have purchased a drive just to have a clone copy of hard drive and a bootable startup drive. While using Carbon Copy Cloner to do this, it reported bad sectors on my drive. Suggested deleting those files which I proceeded to do (deleting those took forever as it initiated the sbbod for each one). But the SBBOD keeps occuring.
I need help and advice to think this through...(actual questions in bold)
5 bad sectors aren't a lot but even 1 that causes the wretched SBBOD is too much. Is there a way to avoid that sector or is it just a precurser of future bad things to come? (let me say here that my drive is not a Seagate).
Do those bad sectors corrupt my clone?
I don't want to weigh this discussion down with too many questions...but these are my thoughts about moving forward
If I decide that, indeed, my hard drive is failing I see the following options:
Replace hard drive (have received local quote of $100 for labor + cost of drive approx $100) - this is certainly the cheapest, easiest and most logical solution.
Take this opportunity to replace the laptop I gave to my daughter when hers was stolen. I would only do this if I could use the iMac's screen as a 2nd monitor. However, the early 2009 iMacs don't support being used as 2nd monitor. I would have to use ScreenRecycler & a VNC. How do those affect performance? If there is no adverse affect, I like this solution.
Any and all advice appreciated. iMac specs in signature.

Thanks for your reply Linc

Rule out other hardware failures such as a damaged SATA cable or a bad logic board.
Do you mean in addition to the hard drive, as that failure seems pretty evident at this point? I guess the cable would be a visual inspection. How would I know about the logic board?
I'm pretty well convinced to replace the Hard Drive. Now the fun question is do I want to go with an SSD drive? I'm reading up now - obviously we're talking expensive for the size I would need. Not sure about these hybrid drives? Small amount of SSD combined with large amount of hard disk? Also reading about using the optical drive slot with something like OWC's Data Doubler. So many options. Any thoughts are welcome

• This code cannot possibly fail. Why is it failing?

LV 2010 (yes, 2010), Win Vista.
I have a DISPLAY UPDATE event, occurring at 2 Hz.
The event carries an array of values, one for each channel.
Four CHANNEL SELECTORS drive an ARRAY INDEX operation.
The four selected channels are shown separately on numeric indicators, then combined on to a waveform chart.
The little subVIs are there to produce a NaN for charting if the channel selector is -1 (none).
Currently they are changed to output a "123.0" value, for debugging purposes.
The HELP says that the ARRAY INDEX will produce a default 0 if the input index is outside the bounds of the array.
Yet, under certain circumstances (see JING at http://screencast.com/t/0kO0GDhlo0E), the "CHART VALUE" indicators fail to update.
In that video, I set the indicators to values of 1, 2, 3, 4 before starting the program.
I DO NOT set the DEFAULT, just enter those numbers into the panel indicators.
The two which have selected channels are updated seemingly normally. The other two, which are left at NONE (-1) do not update.
I would expect them to show a zero, or SOMETHING, but the "3" and "4" never change.
This code is called, as evidenced by the chart advancing, but the values do not change.
If I change the channel to a live channel, then back to NONE, it will return to 0. That's expected.
But why doesn't it update at first?
If I swap the channel selectors around, the problem swaps with it. Any selector set on NONE has the corresponding indicator unchanged from the starting value.
ABOUT THE CODE:
This is a REENTRANT VI, inserted into a SUBPANEL.
Here's the insertion code:
The idea is that each control on the page is a subpanel, each will receive an instance of this one VI.
For each subpanel, I open a new re-entrant ref to this VI (it's set to be reentrant), and insert that ref into the subpanel.
I set a couple of control values, and start it running.
KEY FACTS:
1... If I change OPTIONS = 8 to OPTIONS = 0 in the above, the problem goes away. Everything works as expected.
2... The N=1 in the above, is simply to limit the number of instances, for debugging purposes.
3... I get no errors at any time.
4... I've tried with and without a wire to the TYPE SPECIFIER VI REFNUM input of OPEN VI REFERENCE. No change.
A search on this topic brings up some 2008 issues with LV 8.0, and a suggestion there to use a VIT as the item inserted had no effect here.
So, why does the indicator NOT update if the index is -1, at first? It's as if the code is not there.
And why does making it non-reentrant fix it?
(I have to have it reentrant so I can have multiple instances).

Solved!
Go to Solution.

I don't know how to probe that in the real situation.
If I put a probe there, it doesn't tell me anything, because it's a re-entrant copy that's actually running: the probe is on the original VI which isn't.
If I make it non-reentrant, the problem goes away.
KEY FACTS:
8... Moving the indicators OFF the tab page does nothing different.
9... another page of the inner tab has more text indicators (20) instead of a chart. (see pic below). That page shows the same behavior. Any selector inditialized to -1 fails to update until it is first set to an active channel.
10... It doesn't matter if the selector values are converted to I32 or not (not that I would expect it to).
11.. The selectors are given a STRINGS & VALUES property of ["< None >", -1] by the init code, or ["Speed", 2} or ["Torque", 3] or something if the channel is found in the settings file. When you click on it, I populated the menu with all channels and all indexes. Wonder if there's something wonky with that.

• On my third iPod classic, possibly failing hard drive, again

i've been using 160gb ipod classics for a few years now, they're the most easily available and affordable music players for the amount of music i listen to regularly, and for a while they worked perfectly for me. after the first one i owned was stolen, my second ipod lasted a good while but then started having problems that were attributed by myself & apple to a failing hard drive. now i'm on my third one, and while attempting to sync music to it, all of my music was randomly removed from the ipod. the ipod itself seems to work fine, but now itunes is giving me error 1439 and i can't restore it or format it. is the hard drive failing on this one as well? is something wrong on my end, or are all new ipod classics generally this bad, or am i just coincidentally getting faulty ones? how do i proceed?
here's the stats on it which actually do not look good
Retracts: 7
Reallocs: 2648
Pending Sectors: 0
PowerOn Hours: 61
Start/Stops: 5451
Temp: Current 35c
Temp: Min 10c
Temp: Max 54c

You're not supposed to let the iPod get hotter than 50c. Not good for the components. 2648 reallocs is not good, but none pending suggests that any bad clusters have been successfully mapped out. Try a DFU restore and the "break up large transfers" method from Corrupt iPod classic.

• XML parser fails to convert html encoded text nodes

Under the strain of large documents this defect rears its ugly head more often. While parsing a text node containing html encoded chars i.e. < > &; etc...
The parser will seemingly forget to change the chars at random, 99.9% of the time everything is ok and the proper conversions take place:
< -> <
> -> >
&; -> &
Once an error occurs it is reproducible until the text node is changed ( values and/or order ) then it is a crapshoot again.
These tests were done using the default UTF-8 encoding, here is the exception thrown by the parser along with a portion of the text node before and after the first parsing.
Let me be clear, the parser actually succeeds the first time but the transformation of the HTML encoded pieces possibly fails. It is on the parsing of the text node value as its own document that the parser fails.

• Snow ABS Failing?

I posted in another topic regarding the possible failing of my ABS, but I figured I'd open a new topic because that was related to ISP renewing IP leases.
Over the past few days, I've had to reset my base station twice a day. I haven't been at the computer when it's locked up, so I don't know if it is an issue with the DSL or not. I called SBC and they've told me nothing has changed with the way they hand out their IPs and there haven't been any service interruptions in my area. Not sure if that's completely true or not as it's their tier 1 support and we all know how knowledgeable those tier 1 types are.
Anyway, the other strange issue is that when the airport locks up, it can't be found in the Airport Admin Utility. I figured if the ISP renewed it's lease, it shouldn't adversely affect the recognition of the ABS in the Admin Utility, right? Another strange this is that on one of my computers I've got the option of displaying time connected on, but the time connected intermittently just disappears and reappears. Also, the little arrow next to the network name in the airport pulldown sometimes displays and sometimes doesn't. What would cause this? One computer is running Panther and the other, Tiger. I'm assuming that this option would display based on the options available from the ABS and that the ABS broadcasts whether or not this information is available?
So, if the ABS seems to be flaking out on the display of time connected and those options, could this possibly mean the ABS is on its last legs? Is there anyway to actually check this? Seems like when it works, it works, but then it just locks up on me. Any ideas? Hints? Tips? Thanks.

I am having the same problem with a snow base station and it started about 2 weeks ago! I have one older G3 blue/white iBook running Panther, a G4 powerbook running Tiger, and a G5 imac running Tiger. Comcast is my provider. The base station just disappears from the list and sometimes comes back after a while and sometimes it doesn't, I need to be virtually right on top of it to get it to work when it does this. I decided to try another type of wireless router and got a Netgear at CompUSA. It worked for about 5 days and now all of a sudden the same problem started all over again. The signal just disappears, and even if I try to reconnect, since it appears in my Airport list, it says there is an error connecting to the base station. The base station must be reset to get it to work? Very strange?? I have tried security/ no security, I have changed channels, nothing seems to fix the problem.

• Any luck in repairing failing Powerbook wireless?

The wireless in my two-year old powerbook G4 (bought just before the
Intels came out) is starting to get flakey. It'll work fine for
awhile (no clear pattern in how long) and then iStumbler shows a big drop-off in signal (when a nearby mini is showing no change) and eventually it won't
carry any traffic. Rebooting may or may not get it working again,
although generally a period of rest (sleep) will. (Possibly warming up causes it to fail -- definitely not overheating, though.) I've read of
others that seem to have similar problems, although it's not clear if
they are all of the same cause. What luck have people had in getting
them fixed? I'm mostly concerned that if it is "the antenna wire
through the cover problem" that can't be fixed, but if it's the
internal card or how its seated that can be. I understand that one option would be an external CPMCIA card, but I'd still have to have the case opened to disconnect the internal one.

For those who've been following this, this saga took an interesting twist. In the process of researching whether others were having the same kind of problems with the Quickertek 802.11 b/g PCMCIA wireless card I was having I discovered that Ralink, the manufacturer of the RT61 chipset used, was really the supplier of the software too and they have an updated version of both the driver and user interface software on their website. (I've politely told Quickertek they should be aware of it.) I uninstalled what I'd gotten from Quickertek and installed the updated software and the card works flawlessly. It wakes from sleep and maintains a solid connection (with the Quickertek supplied software it seemed to keep losing the connection under slighly weak signal conditions.) With my Linksys WRT54GS up on the second floor I was able to get a solid connection (less than 1% CRC failure rate) in a location down in the basement where the built-in -- possibly failing -- Airport card didn't even see the signal. I could see the server and client were nicely negotiating a lower transmission rate to keep the error rate low (36 or 48 Mbs, if I remember right -- still faster than my DSL line anyway.) The selling point of the card for me was that since it came with its own software I didn't need to physically disconnect the internal card. So after all that I'm now a happy camper.

• How to Roll Back a Failed BIOS Update for my HP Compaq 6735s (467826R-999) Notebook

I have searched the community and HP pages for instructions to uninstall a BIOS Update in case it fails, and I haven't found the procedure.
My notebook is an HP Compaq 6735s (467826R-999) running the Windows 7 64 bit Professional SP1, and a BIOS revision level of HP "68GPP F.0E, 09/14/09".
Going to the Drivers/Downloads for this notebook
http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdHome/?sp4ts.oid=3687622&spf_p...
I can see my old F.0E of 9/14/09 is super old because there is the F.21 dated 30-Jul-2012, GREAT!! I just have to be sure I can recover from a (possible) failed BIOS Update.
Oh yeah, one more thing: I'm not sure of the differences between the HPQFlash, the ROM Image, and the ROMPaq listed rows in the link above. Which should I run?
Thank you for your efforts!

Were your suggestions assuming that I had already run a BIOS update? I have not. I'm just trying to be sure that I can recover from a failed attempt! I plan to run the BIOS update on 9/20/13.
So, when I follow your suggestion of Restart, then "F2", my notebook goes into a System Diagnostics menu.
I spent some time in the F10, BIOS Setup, Maintenance screens but didn't find any option to RollBack. Again, I suppose it is because I'm running the original, F.0E version!
I also checked the link
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c02693833
you provided to Restore your BIOS, and the tips didn't work for me - at least not with the original version installed.
If I do take the plunge, which would you recommend:
HPQFlash
ROM Image
ROMPaq
Thank you!

• DVD drive failure on some DVD brands

Hello,
I've been using Taiou Yuden DVD-R's for a while on my late 2009 Mac mini (Pioneer DVD-RW DVRTS08).
Now suddenly they fail to burn (Toast Titanium 11.1) with errors like:
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR (or MEDIUM ERROR)
Sense Code = 0x44, 0xD9 (or 0x0C)
INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE (or WRITE ERROR)
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code = 0x21, 0x02
BUFFER UNDERRUN
Previously burned Taiou Yuden DVDs also fail to mount (the Mac mini spits them out or the drive unsuccessfully tries to read them and the only escape is to reboot with the mouse down so the DVD is ejected).
But _TDK_ DVDs burn and mount just OK. Also CDs mount OK.
The offending Taiou Yuden DVDs mount and burn OK on my old 2004 PowerBook as well as on a newer 2010 MacBook.
I have Reset PMU/SMC and the PRAM, verified the boot disk, repaired permissions, and cleaned the DVD drive with compressed air.
I suspect the DVD drive's laser is failing so it can't burn or read Taiou Yuden DVDs while it still can manage TDK DVDs. Could that be correct?
Thanks for any insights you might have!

Here's a video showing how to clean the lens in the optical drive of a Mac Mini. You might also take a look at iFixit for additional instructions.

Fortunately, even if this doesn't work, an external drive is a fairly inexpensive option to work around your possibly failing internal optical drive.

• Summary of Lion Issues

After a failed attempt to restore my early 2009 Mac Pro to Snow Leopard (wasting many hours of time from my business), I am forced to return to Lion OS and all of the negatives associated with this "downgrade."
There is likely little I have to say that is new, but I think all irritated Lion users should post on sites like these so that perhaps Apple will wake up to the fact that they have aggravated many of their most loyal customers and that they MUST resolve some of these issues. I noted that Apple resently released a customer satisfation poll, but failed to even mention Lion, an indicator that they are clueless about the impact this flawed release is having on many of their users, or worse that they know and just do not care.
To be fair, I cannot claim that all issues are the fault of the Lion upgrade, but my software is 100% current, I am a very knowledable user, and I maintain my system regularly. I do not use Time Machine, although I am rethinking this decision. A trusted vendor convinced e that TM was flawed and that it s a waste of time. I do daily backups to a dedicated internal drive, by my backup software does not do incremental saves. It writes a bootable backup with the existing software, so once I went to Lion and did my first backup, I was stuck. The folowing issues are in no particular order of significance:
- After having problems with Safari, I dragged it to the trash and hit delete. I had no idea that it only loads under SL OS, so Safari is dead. I now use Chromium. I have read about Lion restore, but why did not Apple immediately release a working Lion download of Safari? This is a thoughtless oversight that is simply driving users to competing browers. I may never go back to Safari as my default browser.
- When Safari was running, its handling of Cookies was absurd. The third party block not only does not work, Safari picks up Cookies from websites visited both from other browsers and even (apparently) from other computers (even PCs) on our network.
- When Safari was opened, I had to deal with a resend form window most (every?) time I used the browser.
- Every time I shut down my computer I have to uncheck the dialog box regarding how the computer will start back up. Why not remember my selection?
- Apple seemingly goes out of its way to make sure Windows can play on my Mac, but shuts down Rosetta. This cost me several software applications some of which are not doing upgrades, along with the expense of retaining software that did do Lion specific upgrades. The most critical loss being my decade plus of Quicken files. During my attempt to revert back to Snow leopard, I neglected to save my Quicken data files, which means years of valuable business and home data was lost for good. This was of course my fault, but given all of the unused computing power in this Mac Pro, why Rosetta had to be dropped is beyond me.
- My preferences for certain applications are lost peridically. My Kensignton trackball for example, loses its prefences about once a week.
- My passwords for certain applications are lost periodically. This happens mainly in browser software.
- The Mail folders were hidden, altghough I hae since learned this was down in SL, prior to the release of Lion. I have read other useful folders were also hideden, but mail downloads is something I looked at every week. I learned online how to turn the hiding off, but am perplexed why Apple decided I no longer needed to see these files.
- My computer clearly runs slower now. How any OS could slow down a computer with eight CPU cores and 16GB of memory is beyond me.
- iCal calendar window colapses when I need it open. Again I have to wonder why Apple would decide I don't need this window open all the time. When I do my monthly planning, I want this window OPEN.
- iCal day view is ruined.
- iCal often defaults to "all day" for an event. This requires me to drag down these events into the hourly area, one at a time.
- iCal event overlap makes it harder to grab an event that is now more hidden by another event. Why?
- When I select a window in Finder, sometimes the application does not change until I point to the window multiple times.
- Sometimes when I open a MS Office file, a different file opens, usually the last one I used with the application.
- Spell check often substitutes the wrong word, making a document or email sound idiotic. I believe (but am not certain) that previously a word substitute was offered to me as an option.
The bottom line is that Apple sold me an upgrade with almost zero benefits, which cost me and my business hours and hours of down time, along with the lose of critical files, along with the loss of often used software, along with the cost of upgrades. This "inexpense" software "upgrade" cost me at least a thousand dollars and permanent loss of priceless financial records (again, my error, but due to the upgrade being released). All this mess so that my OS is dumbed down to work better with smart phones and iPads -- neither of which I own.
A Mac Pro is one of the most overpriced computers sold today. Why does Apple knowingly impact desktop and laptop users, to appease the latecomers who use phones and Pads? I have been here since the SE/30. How did I drop to the bottom of the priority list?
This Lion mess, along with iPhoto upgrades that wiped out several years of family memories and iTunes software geared to maximise profits, not user satisfaction, have me wary of my old trusted friend Apple. I feel abused and I wish that all who have experienced similar issue would rasie some **** about it so we get the attention we deserve.

I'm curious how you would "attempt" to install SL, and how such an "attempt" could possibly fail?
You boot from the SL disc that came with your machine, you erase the HD, you install SL. Then you restore your applications and your data files from your backup.
Oh, wait, you don't think your critical files need to be backed up. That's why you "lost" them.
But you'd still have an SL machine again.
Endless solutions for users (some bone-stupid and near impossible to screw up) to ensure that they had backups and could easily revert... *free* solutions... and the people who couldn't be bothered to take advantage of them want to blame *Apple*? *** were you going to do if someone broke in and stole the machine? What were you going to do when the HD died (HD's *always* die).
People who claim to depend on machines, and don't make backups, deserve what happens to them.
So. If it's important to return to SL on this machine, detail why you think you can't, so people can help you.

• Hp Pavilion 23 Blank Screen With Mouse Cursor After Hp Logo (Not Windows Logo)

Hello my computer wont start up all i get is a black screen but i have a mouse cursor. after a little bit the computer will restart and do a automatic repair but nothing happens it just keeps on rebooting. i tired to do a bio update but it seems to not be working. there is no option in the bios to update or even in UEFI. i also did a harddrive test and got a Short DST Check fail (FAILURE ID: 909HVX-0007K0-WPU2XF-60WH03) but i still can get access to the harddrive using a Linux LiveUSB and all files are there. (Product Number Is : H5P60AAR#ABA)

It is possible to receive a false DST check but not common.
It doesn't mean your hard has failed but that it is in imminent danger of failing.
You can try again but this time using the Extended DST test.
But before doing anything I suggest you back up all your important data using that live Linux boot disk just in case.
Every hard disk manufacturer has their own diagnostic boot cd/usb. Google it.
You should create one and run it for your brand hard drive.
You should be able to determine which brand you have from the BIOS/UEFI hardware tab.
While your'e in there double check that your boot priority is set to hard drive first.
Your other issue seems to be the dreaded 'Automatic Repair Loop' which could be caused by your possibly failing hard dirve. I would fully diagnose the hard drive first.
Here's a link with several suggested fixes. Some of them require a Windows 8 boot disk, other do not.

• After a month of usage, Helix has been a total disaster to me.

I bought Helix 16th of last month. It was the first day of release of Helix in Korea. I made a payment on 16th, and recieved the package on 17th.
The first one had a failing battery, and I had to replace it from the day one. Strangely these things happened to me quite often before, so I just thought **bleep** happened and went over it.
During the first weekend, My new Helix started to develop strange symptom. it had a ghost touch on the middle of the screen. At first it happened when I was holding it with my one hand. In-spec, only a **bleep**ty engineering, I thought at first, but over the weekend it developed and by tuesday it was virtually unusable. I sent in the device again, and I had it replaced for the second time. After 2 weeks of usage(a very frustrating one, due to those KB battery failure issues and crashing OSs), the phantom touch came back, this time, even worse.
I sent in my new machine earlier this week. They said they couldn't get me a replacement anymore, because I had it for over a month already(It was a month and a day, and that day had to be delayed because the previous day was f*****g sunday. BTW, I had it for two weeks, the rest of the time you guys had it.). They did offer a repair, and the replacement part was also defective, and had to be ordered again. Now I am even starting to forget that I even had a Helix at all.
I purchased 3Years TPP warranty, and I bought LCD protection film for every Helixs I got. The transportation cost to service center and for replacements weren't cheap(I wanted to get things solved fast and used quick courier services. Never knew I was only calling for other problems every single time). I think I spent like additional 500 dollars on this machine, only to get more and more frustration over time. I don't think I can handle this in-service-for-a-month-for-two-weeks-of-usage for the next three years, and I decided to bail out. As soon as I get the repaired machine, I am going to sell it. Of course it won't get payed well,(who would want to buy a used and repaired machine?) and I will probably lose enough money to buy another laptop. but I think it will save me a hell lot of money in the end.
I've been always on the defending side when people were complaining that Lenovo is destroying ThinkPad values, and I was a tenacious one. But only after a course of a month, I think I'll turn to the other side. It's never an easy thing to change a person's stance, and Lenovo sure proved they could.
If you cannot convince a user to stop leaving his old laptop in his office as a backup for the new machine, it doesn't quite qualify as a business machine. You don't even have to say if he actually had to use that Backup, and even more so if he had to use that backup more than the new one.
To anyone who is keeping the Helix, good luck, and god bless you.

I don't know...but considering the massive number of complaints on malfunctioning Helixs on this forum, I don't think anyone could dare to be 100% sure that one will get a perfect Helix.
In my case, I decided to Give up on Helix and wait for...I don't know, X240T, maybe? Thinking of the limited options when looking for a device with high-res display and a Wacom digitizer, I don't think I could be able to make up my mind anytime soon. This I can be sure about, however: Lenovo will never have any advantages over all other makers in my list from this time on(yeah, that list include those cheap makers that stamp out dispensable laptops like Haier, or Hasee.)
In general, ThinkPad Helix is a good example of a tragic outcome of solid concept that cannot possibly fail(i7 processor with 8GB ram, with Wacom Digitizer, a KB dock with battery, and you can even flip the docking direction. How could it fail?), that has met with a horrible, horrible execution.
If Lenovo was trying to present their idea of ThinkPad's new DNA through the Helix, then their Double Helix is nothing but a pitifully deformed, inferior one that will not survive the natural selection.

• MacBook Air hard drive dying?

I'm wondering if someone can help me take a look at the console messages to see if my MacBook Air hard drive is possibly failing.
I had shut down my computer and the shut down process went just fine. A few minutes later when I turned on the computer again, the Apple logo showed up with the spinning disc/sun ray but it never got to the login window.
I hooked up the SuperDrive to repair disk permissions and repair disk. Indeed, it needed disk repairs and permissions to be repaired. It seems to be running fine now.
When I opened the Console, it says something about disk I/O error for some of the log entries.

Ever since last night, my Macbook Pro (purchased in September of 2009), has been incredibly slow. I noticed it first while trying to browse the web. Out of nowhere, while doing things, like browsing Facebook, that I could normally do easily and without incident, the color wheel/beach ball/rainbow wheel/etc. would appear for what felt like an eternity, and for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Firefox was the only application I had running, and there was nothing excessive being done. After several more instances in the next few minutes, I tried my luck with Safari. Same result. Then, I realized it wasn't just confined to web browsing. Even trying to open a Finder window would cause the color wheel to come up. Every simple action that used to take mere milliseconds to complete now can take up to 5 minutes to unfreeze. After I finally managed to get my laptop to recognize the external hard drive I plugged in so that I could try and use Time Machine to back up the more than 200 gigabytes that occupy my dying hard drive, the back up failed after an hour. This may or may not be related, as I noticed that the icon for the external hard drive no longer showed on my desktop. I have scanned my computer using a virus scanner obtained from the App Store a year or two ago. Nothing turned up. Finally, I have tried both restarting and shutting down my computer, yet all that that has shown me is that start-up is now a laborous process as well. For the first time, it showed me a loading bar under the gray Apple logo that remained empty for a few minutes, until it finally disappeared entirely and the operating system booted up. My attempt at entering Safe Mode on startup also failed, leaving me with nothing but a white screen that forced me to manually shut down my computer and give up in desperation. I'm planning on taking my Macbook to the Apple Store to see what can be done before irreparable damage is inflicted to my hard drive, because I value many of the files that have been added since my last back up several months ago. If any of you have had similar problems or have any idea what is going on, please let me know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Danny

It sounds like either data corruption, malware, bad sectors on the drive (moved it while it's opearating? a no-no) or the drive is possibly failing.
I'll give you a bunch of links and you decide what you want to do.
Apple is just going to charge you to replace the drive and not save your data.
If you want to recover your data and can't fix things yourself, take the machine to a local Mac repair shop as it's rather simple to replace the drive and Apple might not have one for a older SATA using machine aslo they specialize in data recovery efforts also. Apple doesn't.
You also can replace the drive yourself too.
