Possible Forums Maintenance

Hello Everyone,
In my discussions with Lithium (our forum vendor) regarding performance, they have suggested some maintenance on the forums that could help with our community's performance.
The maintenance is to "trim" subscriptions and floats (floated threads and boards) for all users in the community.  This means that if you added a message subscription or floated a thread more than 3 months ago, we would remove the subscription and/or float for you.  In long-standing communities like ours, users can build up many subscriptions and floats that can affect the performance of the entire community.
In order to keep the floats and subscriptions that are important to you, you just need to unfloat and re-float the thread, or remove and add the message to your subscriptions again because they will then be newer than 3 months.
I must stress that there is no guarantee that this will have a noticeable benefit for performance, but Lithium has recommended that we try this because it has helped other communities in the past.
I would like to perform this maintenance as soon as possible, but I recognize that it is the holiday season and we must give people adequate notice to take any action they find necessary.  Therefore, I propose that we do this maintenance the week of January 7th, specifically either Tuesday January 8th or Thursday January 10th.
Please post any questions or concerns you have to this thread.

Laura

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the feedback!
I think I may have not made something very clear - this operation is a one time deal.  We do not plan to do this at any regular interval, and if at any point at time that becomes necessary, we will give everyone plenty of notice.  I definitely do not want to silently delete anything
The idea behind "trimming" your subscriptions down to only those added in the last 3 months assumes that most conversations die down by then and become not as important to you.  Of course, that is not always true which is why I wanted to give everyone enough notice to remove and re-add subscriptions that are important to them.
For users that have many subscriptions they want to keep, this could be a time-consuming process.  I will look into whether or not we could just do this operation for floated threads and boards, since people tend to have less floats than subscriptions.
I think once tagging is available to everyone, it can replace some of the use of floats and subscriptions because it allows you to make it easy to find threads and messages again.  Ton also brings up a good point about RSS - I also use this to track particular users.
I'll keep you updated.  I definitely wanted to get some feedback before going through with this operation.
Thanks,
Laura
P.S. Ton - I started with the largest boards for sticky (or floated) posts first.... I'll keep going

    I offer an alternative:
    RSS
For the heavy subscription users this is might be drastic shift in workflow, but as LabVIEW users we are used to that.
In my RSS reader (newsfox for Firefox) I have a group called 'discussions' where I have feeds from discussions I'm interested in.
Every thread has it's own RSS feed so you easily follow them.
Besided Discussions I also have trackers feeded through RSS.

PS This was only stickied to the LabVIEW forum, DIADem users don't use stickies?
PPS Most RSS readers check every thread regurarly, might this be the cause of the slow down now RSS is gaining momentum?

    Hi lacy,
Sorry that I missed your reply, I had made a bunch of posts and misplaced my subscription emails
On the feedback board, I posted about turning on tagging here.  First, it was for Forum Enthusiasts and NI Employees.  After we got some traction, I turned it on for all Active users (200 posts and more) which includes you.
There is also another long thread with much user discussion about tagging here.  It's long, but you can see some of my posts about the benefit of tagging by looking at the messages I've tagged with "tagging".

  • WARNING! Discussion Forum Maintenance Scheduled 11/19/2004 11/21/2004

We are excited to announce that we will be performing significant maintenance on the NI Discussion Forums beginning November 19th.
While we are doing our best to reduce the impact on community members, there are a few things you should be aware of:
The site will be unavailable for a couple hours the evening of November 19th.
The site will be available for searching and browsing, but not accepting any new posts for up to 24 hours during the maintenance.
The URL structure will be changing, so all links to messages and subscriptions to messages will no longer work. We recommend that you save your subscription notifications so that you have the title of the
message handy when you need to find the message after the maintenance is complete.
We appreciate your patience as we work to continuously improve the NI community!

  • I just noticed this post under forum maintenance

I wish the admin would direct us to this rather than just deleting our posts that discuss the forum. I understand that this is a technical forum, but I would not be able to stand it if, everything was always on topic:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=788131&tstart=0

This phrase really irritates me: "The best way to give feedback is to use the links provided on that program's pages."
No. The best way to give feedback is to post it publically in a place where we can all see it so that it doesn't get duplicated and we all know if it's been actioned.
The best way to destroy the community is to tell us to shut up and only communicate in secret with the powers that be.

    Hi...
I'm relatively new to Crystal Reports - but I work pretty exclusively with CR & a program called ScheduALL - a product of VizuALL www.scheduall.com which is fairly widely used in the entertainment industry, but also in other areas as well.  (Unfortunately - it uses an older version of Crystal - v. 9 currently... I'm waiting to hear when I can upgrade past 9 to a more current version.)
I almost never find anything within the search engine for that program, but I wonder if you might get a lot of forum chatter in that regard if you added it as a topic header?
    (Just curious).
    Thanks!
    Best,
    Kara aka KJ7

Hi Mounia, I don't believe there's a way to do this out of the box. My suggestion would be to create a discussion board for each topic or use a third party solution. I haven't used this particular one, but can vouch for the company's products:

Being able to browse all attached images may; very occasionally; be useful, if for instance there is a spam attack, but then we would need to know also which post the image was attached to.

  • Read data from maintenance view

    hi all,
could anyone please tell me if there is any special way to read data from a maintenance view (if at all it is possible).
i wrote a simple select on it but it gave me a syntax error that the view is not defined in the dictionary. (i am able to see the view definition by double clicking and it is active too).
    the following is my select.
select single lgnum from v_t320 into (w_lgnum) where werks eq p_i_werks and lgort eq p_i_lgort.
    awaiting answers...
    regards,
    PJ

    Thanx Rich,
but the documentation on maintenance views says that we can have read access to them. Does that mean the data can only be seen via the DDIC and not from a select written in a program??
    this is what i read...
    Maintenance Status
The maintenance status of a view controls whether data records can also be changed or inserted in the tables contained in the view.
The maintenance status can be defined as follows:
Read only: Data can only be read through the view.
Read, change, delete, insert: Data of the tables contained in the view can be changed, deleted, and inserted through the view.
Only read access is permitted for database views that are defined through several tables. If a database view contains only one single table, data can be inserted in this table through the view (see Inserts Through Database Views).
The following status definitions are also possible for maintenance views:
Read and change: Existing view entries can be changed. However, records cannot be deleted or inserted.
Read and change (time-dependent views): Only entries whose non-time-dependent part of the key is the same as that of existing entries may be inserted.
you surely have earned some points here....just let me be clear of the concept behind this
    regards,
    PJ

  • Maintenance Screen - CHAR255 field to be displayed in 2 lines

    Hi,
I have a field Comments in my z-table which is 255 char long. Inspite of my extending the field width to max the end user wants it to be displayed in 2 lines. Is this possible thru maintenance screen?
    Thank You,
    SB.

    Hi
I suppose you're speaking about Maintenance Screen for SM30?
If it's so, no it can't, but you can generate the single screen and then change this screen in order to display that field on 2 lines, i.e to split that field into 2 fields.

  • Creating Plugin Modules for Use with Compiled Code

    Hi all,
While programing a data analysis package in Labview, I've run into a problem that I don't really know how to answer.  It goes something like this: my program receives data from measurement devices in the form of ASCII or binary files, which I must then process and evaluate.  The problem is, the data files can have a variety of different formats.  Right now, I only know of 4 or 5, but more could literally be added at any time.
My thought is this: I'd love to have some sort of modular plugins for reading the data files.  In other words, I could have a subfolder under my application's space in the "Program Files" directory.  The subfolder would contain any number of "ReadFileX.xxx" modules.  Upon initiation, my code would scan that folder, determine the possible formats (based on the *.xxx files therein), and be capable of reading any of the files.  Ideally, the user would select a file, I would note its format, and call the appropriate plugin module to handle reading the data into my code.
What is the best approach for doing something like this?  I looked (briefly) into using DLL's, but (from what I can tell) I would need to explicitly define the function name and the inputs / outputs in the "Call Library Node" function.  This would appear the break the modularity feature, as I want to be able to load the software, and then develop new plugins down the road when the need arises.  I also found some information on source distributions (in an LLB).  This option would probably work, but my efforts at coding a basic test of VI-Server were met with errors.
Does anyone have any experience performing a similar task?  If so, would you share your knowledge / secrets with me?  I would be extremely grateful for your feedback.
    Thanks!
    Mark

Mark - there is a Coding Challenge currently going on, and I have submitted an entry that shows how to dynamically instantiate a class based on a class that resides on disk. Specifically, you're going to be interested in "Get LV Class Default Value.vi" under the "Cluster, Class, and Variant" palette that allows you to create an instance of an object based on the path of the .lvclass file. The class you load is going to be what's called a child class of a parent class (or base class), where the child class implementation overrides the function of the parent class. The "Get LV Class Default Value.vi" is very loosely analogous a Class Constructor.
You can deploy your application having implemented all the base class functions, then subsequently develop and deploy new classes to reside in a "plugins" folder without needing to change the original app code.
If you find that contest entry helpful, consider dropping a vote, huh? The LabVIEW Communities have had access errors sporadically the past few weeks, so if you get a "Server Error" you may need to try again later. There's also going to be Forums maintenance today and tomorrow.
