Possible HDD problem - clicking sound and system hangs on Qosmio G30-116

Hi,
I just got my G30-116 back from service (screen replacement) and after 2 days another problem. It just keeps hanging out.
I did not change a thing since I got it and now it just stops working on occasional things like browsing the internet. It has not happened before. And my biggest worry is the clicking sound that my hard drive makes.
What can be wrong? It did not crush before I have sent it to service, not I think my hard drive is faulty... Thanks

What to say? If you can not find out why freezing problem occurs try to preinstall OS with delivered recovery DVD.
Anyway according to your description I am afraid there is some serious problem with HDD and it can be just worse then now. Please be sure your data are backed up.
Please contact service again and explain them the situation. If the HDD is defective you will get new one and if they have the HDD on stock it can be replaced very fast. G30 is very nice unit and I hope you will be satisfied. Few days ago my friend has visited me and we have tested his G30 with HD-DVD drive on my LCD TV. I just can tell you one thing: I am really impressed about HD picture quality.
Good luck!

My mac pro wont start. I push the power button and I get a click sound. A few seconds later another click sound and that it. I've tried different power plugs. Going direct into the wall, through a power strip. By iteslf, with other devices plugged in. I removed hard drives, and some RAM, and nothing. Sometimes it would not turn on, and then some minutes later it works. So its was sparatic, but now its been the same situation for three days where it wont turn on.
I'm guessing power supply, but I wanted to see if anyone had a similar expereince and what the solution was, before I drag this beast to my local Apple store and have them look at it. Its a real pain to get it there and back and I want to be armed with some info for them. I already dragged this to them when it first started to do this, and of course it started up just fine for them. And you know if it works for the Genius then theres nothing wrong with. No matter what you explain to them.
I figure if anyone had a the same problem and was able to resolve it, I can relate that experience to the Genius even if it start up for them.
    Thanks

Try a SMC Reset using the extended method:
    Remove the AC power cord.
Press the power-on button. [This drains the stored charge from the power supply]
    wait a quarter minute.
Restore the power cord, being certain to JAM it into the socket, as the big block of rubber inhibits proper seating.
    wait a quarter minute
    attempt to power on.
If no joy, examine the button battery half-hidden behind the graphics card. Remove it to measure the Voltage. A new battery should not cost over US$5, and measures a little over 3 Volts. BR-2032 is used in garage door opener controls and car door locks controls. The geeks at Radio Shack can measure it for you.

  • IMac won't turn on. Only a clicking sound and a grey folder with flashing question mark.

iMac won't turn on. Only a clicking sound and a grey folder with flashing question mark.
    Help.

Your iMac is actually turning ON as proven by the grey folder with the flashing question mark.
The flashing question mark indicates that your system is unable to find a bootable volume. The clicking sound that you hear is probably coming from your hard drive while it tries to recalibrate. I suspect your hard drive has failed.
What model imac do you have? If it's under warranty I suggest taking it in for service. Hopefully you've been maintaining a regular backup of your data as all users should. I lost my data once and it was a valuable lesson. I back up regularily now.
If your iMac came with install disks then you can boot from them, choose your language when asked, then pull down the Utilities menu to launch the Disk Utility application. The Disk Utility application will allow you to verify whether your hard drive has an issue. Usually a clicking sound, assuming it's coming from the hard drive, is a sign of a bad hard drive.
If your system has Lion installed then you can hold down the Command and R keys when you restart the system, then launch the Disk Utility application from the menu that appears.

  • Seagate FreeAgent Go is making a clicking sound and the light is rapidly blinking. My Macbook is no longer recognizing it. Is there any way to fix it or recover my files? The SeaAgent is less than a month old!

Seagate FreeAgent Go is making a clicking sound and the light is rapidly blinking. My Macbook is no longer recognizing it. Is there any way to pull all the songs I have saved on it? The SeaAgent is less than a month old!
Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
Or at least recover the lost data?
    Thanks!

How to fix: the drive is in warranty, so contact Seagate for a replacement.
How to recover your data: Do you have backups? (If not, you really, really, should.)
You can try downloading Data Rescue, which will run in trial mode and let you know if the data is recoverable. (You can then choose to purchase the full version if it works for you.) A clicking drive, though, is usually (though not always) a sign that the drive cannot be recovered.
    Matt
    Edit: fixed link.

my click sounds and ringer sounds on my iphone4 just stopped working....what can i do to fix it?

Is the mute button on the side of the phone switched on?
Also go to settings, scroll to the bottom and ensure that "Keyboard Clicks" is set to on. Make sure that the "Ringer and Alerts" volume is not set at zero in this menu.

does anyone know what this means?

I copied this from my console last night......please forgive me if it's way too much info.......however, one of the things I keep seeing throughout it constantly is this sentence.....it seems to be consistent and it seems to refer to the Safari connection.....oh another thing.....the clicking noise starts up as soon as I open my laptop......it goes away after awhile.......the rainbow wheel is only when I'm on the internet....ok......here is the repetitive note I seem to see on my console log:

  • Dropped my ipod and now it makes a clicking sound and won't turn on at all. is it cheaper to get a new one or fix this one?

i have tile floors and i dropped my ipod classic flat on its back while it was off. i tried turning it on after that and it now it makes a clicking sound and won't even turn on. all it shows is a dead ipod and told me to go to apple.com/support/ipod. i'm not sure how to fix it or if it's even fixable. or is it just cheaper to get a new one?

If the phone will not power on try these three things:
Connect it to your phone charger
Connect it to your computer and open up iTunes
Perform a hard reset (Hold down the sleep/wake (top) button at the same time as the home (circle) button for 45 seconds. When the apple appears on the screen let go of both buttons.

  • Powerbook making clicking sound and running slow

I have had my powerbook for 3 years. Just recently it started running very slow and spinning beach ball comes up alot. There is a clicking sound coming from the top left corner of the keyboard by the speaker. When the clicking starts is when the beach ball comes up. It doesn't happen all the time. This occurs about every couple of minutes and then goes away. Once the clicking noise goes away the computer runs fine. I have ran disk utility, onyx and techtools (no errors have come up). Nothing has seemed to fix the problem. Can anyone give me some advice on what might be the problem. Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
That sounds like a hard drive possibly beginning to fail. However, it's located on the left side under the palm rest. In the upper left corner of the keyboard, the only moving part is a fan, however, if that were doing something odd it shouldn't cause the beachball to come up, which leads me to think it's a hard drive issue. Next time you hear the ticking, see if it could be coming from under the left palm rest area.
So, ensure that your important data is backed up, and do it regularly, if not doing that already. Assuming it is your hard drive, you can either live with it, or replace the hard drive. (Don't know if you have Applecare, since you said your system is 3 years old). You may have a 4200rpm drive in there today, with 5400rpm being mainstream today, and 7200rpm the faster option. Sizes go up to 160GB in 5400rpm and 100GB in 7200rpm. Seagates come with a 5 year warranty versus 3 year for most other drives.
If you're handy, you can do the replacment yourself or an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple can do it. If Apple or AASP does the replacement, make sure they write on the service order that you want your old hard drive returned to you. Recently, there was a person who was surprised to find that Apple may retain the drive as a trade in on the replacement drive. Also, if it were me, I would specify I want a new drive and not a refurbished drive.

  • PXIE-1065 Chassis makes clicking sound and will not power up.

Came in from the weekend to my few week old PXIe-1065 chassis making a clicking sound near the ac power cord and it will not power on. I removed all the cards from the chassis and it stops clicking, but as soon as I replace the controller (PXIe-8133) it starts clicking again. Is this an ac power supply failure in the chassis. I also noticed there was no filter elements over the fans in the rear of the chassis like my smaller (PXIe-1082) chassis. Could this have led to the failure?
    -Jeremy

    Hi uyt,
There are a few troubleshooting steps to take here that might show where the problem lies. Have you tried any other embedded controllers in the control slot of this chassis? Do they show the same behavior? Have you tried that controller in your other chassis? Depending on which one the issue follows, I would be inclined to guess that part is damaged in some way and needs to be RMAed.
In response to your suspicion: I would be extremely surprised if you were delivered a part without a physical component and many of our newer chassis do not have the fan filter you are referring to, so that is likely not the issue.
Feel free to call in to our support line at 866-275-6964 to troubleshoot the system with one of our engineers before RMAing the device.

  • What does it mean when my MacBook makes a clicking sound, and when I turn it off and back on again all I get is a folder icon with a ? in it?

My MacBook made a clicking sound.  I turned it off for 5 minutes, then restarted it.  Now all I get is a folder with a ? on it.  Is my battery fried?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'llsee a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Help!  Why is Macbook not starting, making clicking sounds, and rejecting install disk??

I was working on my Macbook (OS 10.4.11) when the screen froze.  I forced a shutdown.  When I try to power it up again, I get a blank screen (not sure if gray or blue; looks sort of in between) and hear clicking noises. Eventually, a flashing question mark appears.
I found a post on this problem that said the hard drive was looking for instructions to start up (hence the clicking noises) and an Apple article about possible solutions, <http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1440>, but none of the steps worked.
I then booted up again, inserted Install Disk 1 for Tiger, and forced a shutdown again so that I could boot up with "C" held down see if I could solve the problem from the Uilities menu on the Install Disk.  However, when I pressed the power button to start up again, the computer just spit out the Install Disk (even with "C" held down).
Can anyone tell me (1) what the problem seems to be with the computer and/or the CD drive; (2) whether a low-tech type like me might be able to fix it if I can get the Install Disk to run, or whether I just have to take it to my local Mac shop?  The computer is no longer under warranty, so getting it repaired will probably be expensive.
Thanks so much for any good advice out there!

  • Clicking sound and MBP does not boot

Two months ago, I upgraded to a MacBook Pro, which today suddenly failed to start. When it happened, I had woken it from sleep and started up EyeTV through its USB-powered antenna. The programme started up normally then the screen froze and the spinning ball appeared. I had to switch off the computer by pressing the main switch for 10 seconds, but when I switched it on again I only could see the grey screen. Suddenly, a light, repeated but irregular clicking sound was clearly audible under the left hand back side below the screen. I found a picture of an opened MBP on the web and it seems that this is not the location of the hard disk but there is no way to start up the computer again, not even from a CD. I cannot fathom why this happened since I never had a similar problem but I am worried that the Eye TV antenna, which has a magnetic foot, might have been too close to the computer, and has altered something inside the machine. As I am currently not close to a Genius help area or even in a country with easy access to an Apple Help Desk, any idea on how to solve this is welcome. Thanks!

    Hi,
That sounds very encouraging. I was once able to get it into target disk mode as well, but I can't remember whether it was with the startup DVD in it or not. With the startup disk I can do all the technical check stuff, except anything that requires me to use the HD, which the MBP does not recognize anymore. Can you describe more in detail what steps you took to get it into target disk mode, I mean sequence of events: first connect the two MBPs by Firewire, then start the second MBP, then the first one in Target Mode by holding T when starting up - or in another sequence?
I still believe that something substantial must be wrong with the machine and will give it into repair even I can manage to start it, but it would be divine if I could simply get my data off the HD. Please let me know if your surface scan surfaces anything.
Just out of interest, what does "to send me a box for a repair" mean? In Europe, we have to bring the machine back to the Apple shop in person...
    Thanks, Alex

  • Xfce4: Problems with Sound and Screen Locking on ASUS G53S

    Hello everyone,
I recently installed Arch for the first time, and decided to use xfce4 for my desktop environment. Everything seems to work well after I followed the instructions given in the wiki, except for the sound and screen-locking functionality. Regarding the sound, I made sure that my user account is added to the audio group, and installed the gstreamer1.0-base-plugins and gstreamer1.0-good-plugins packages. The xfce4-mixer applet starts up without any warnings and recognizes the available devices, but I am still not able to hear any sound. The "Lock Screen" applet simply does nothing upon being clicked. Do you have any ideas as to what I should try in order to fix these problems?
    Thank you very much!

To be able to lock the screen you have to install and configure a screen locker or screen saver, e.g. xscreensaver, slock, i3lock, maybe combined with  xautolock. When you use a screen locker and not xscreensaver, XFCE might not recognize it. Then create a symlink in /usr/local/bin/xflock4 or use a shellscript if you need to pass parameters.
My configuration: xautolock with i3lock. /usr/local/bin/xflock4 is this executable shellscript:
    #!/bin/sh
    xautolock -locknow
xautolock is started in the XFCE autostart with this commandline: xautolock -locker 'i3lock -d -i ~/Bilder/arch/arch-linux-lock.png'
PS: If you like i3lock and need user switching capabilities, I can give you a patch where Ctrl-S calls a custom command (gdmflexiserver by default)

  • Clicking sound and wont start up

My computer is making a really loud clicking sound when I start up and now it wont stat up at all? What should I do? Are all my files gone?

It is hard to say - the clicking could be the
harddisk. Does your iBook boot at all? (i.e. do you
see the grey apple logo, or a blinking 'folder', or
just a black screen before it powers down... ?).
If possible, try the Hardware check CD that came with
your iBook - it should boot from the CD-Rom: Insert
the CD and hold down the 'C' key while your computer
    boots...
I did boot up with my Hardware check CD but I couldnt choose my hard drive to run the test.
I've read not to keep trying that I could do more damage....not sure how to proceed or if I should try again booting from the CD (while holding down the C key.
At this point I need a folder of info from my desktop and thats my number one priority.
I am wondering if I should send it out to a data recovery service as I dont want to cause fatal damage to my files.
