Possible? Importing Folders as is. Instead of iTunes "automaticly" doing it

What I'm trying to do is put my music (that is already Organized in their folders) into iTunes. But when I put in certain albums into iTunes music portion. It separates the tracks. This is really bother-some because when I put all my music in at once (22gigs+) It make makes 350 albums into 600+ albums. Changing the Views does not change anything. The only thing resembling what i want is to view it by tracks. All I'm asking is, Is it possible to tell iTunes to not automatically organize my music and organize it by the folder i put it in as is. I'm thinking of buying an iPod because they seem to be the only devices of their kind to hold "that" much music. But if iTunes doesn't properly stored and organize, it will probably be the same issue on the iPod. Sorry if this type of topic was already created. But a yes or no would suffice. No meaning I would have to edit the tag for each track. (probably)

You can tell iTunes not to to organize your music. However, you can't tell it to organize it by folder structure. iTunes organizes music by ID3 tag information. iPods also rely on ID3 tag info. So, in order to effectively use an iPod, you will have to edit your tags.
Best of luck.

  • HELP! Cant import folders from ext drive to itunes

I've recently had problems with my PC so, decided to copy all the stuff from my 60gig iPod to my external hard drive. I uninstalled iTunes then reinstalled it & tried to copy the folders from my ext drive back into itunes but, it's not moving them all. A number of folders exist with the name of the band & these seem to be ok - they look like typical folders in a windows explorer view. There is a shaded folder called "music" which when opened then contains more shaded folders with the folder names of "F00, F01" etc. These folders will not import to itunes no matter what I do. I have tried to "import folder" but it doesn't work, I have tried to move the folders back to my C drive but itunes doesn't recognise them. I have updated the "advanced" tab in the preferences to my ext drive / pointed to the folder "music" but, it still doesn't import the files. Can anyone help or offer some suggestions please? I'm really hacked off by this as I cant sync my iPod up as I'll lose everything on it. thank you!!!

You are not the only one... Several threads exist on this topic - iTunes refusing to import (all) files from folders - but no solution yet it seems, and Apple is not responding at all...

  • Can I manually update my Ipod instead of it automatically doing it?

Does anyone know how to do that?

If you want to manage it manually then connect your iPod and click on the iPod icon in the iTunes source list to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. In the Summary tab check the box "manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. Once your iPod is in manual mode you just drag and drop songs and playlists etc. from your iTunes library:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
Something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on the desktop and check this link for alternative methods:: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • Is it possible to import music into iPad without using iTunes?

Do any of of you know whether or not it is possible to import music into iPad, like when you can import pictures, without the use of iTunes ( I don't have a computer)? I have music on my phone and on USB flash drives. Thnx

If you are in America then you can download your past iTunes music purchases via the store (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519). But no, you can't import from flash drives (the camera connection kit can only import photos and videos) or from an iPhone.

  • Importing folders as playlists in itunes

I have a large volume of folders on my hard disk containing .aiff files. I want to import them so the folders become playlists with the same .aiff files inside them. That cannot be done in itunes 10.7 -- the folders are obliterated and playlists must be recreated manually and the .aiff files placed in them. This is fine and dandy for a few playlists, but gets old real quickly when there are hundreds of folders. I'm currently using iFolderer as a workaround, but it too has its limits. (for some reason, each folder has to be added individually -- you can't batch a bunch of them and transfer them, like in Finder or Windows Explorer.)
Does anyone know if the situation is any better for v. 11? I haven't upgraded. Or if there is a better way to do what I seek in v. 10.7? Thanks. -- David

thanks Brandon... maybe i was not clear....  I am talking about PLAYLIST FOLDERS in the main iTunes window... under >PLAYLISTS, the folders appear right after the iTunes DJ and automatically generated playlists like Recently Added, Recently Played, Top 25, etc.
Actually what happens when you double click the folder, what you get in the new window in iTunes is the individual song tracks, not a list of playlists what was added to the folder, and dragging a playlist to the folder does nothng...

  • Importing folders/directories forcing a copy to itunes directory

When I use File>Add Folder to Library, iTunes will randomly (sometimes yes, sometimes no) copy all files to the itunes library folder, despite the 'copy to itunes folder when adding' (paraphrase) preference being UNchecked. It forces me to import file by file, folder by folder with the standard import feature (this occured on older itunes versions too - pre-vers.7. (itunes then adds the original, and the copy to the library, creating doubles of every song it does this to in my main playlist)
That's not so bad for single-artist folders, but when I have an artist with 8 albums, manually adding each one is a pain versus adding all of the subfolders with the add-folder feature.
Anything can be done about this? It really ought to be fixed.
Edit: Now I can't even add files the old fashioned way. I used the regular ctl+o/add file to library, selected all the files in a folder and clicked ok... nothing happens.... I try again... nothing. One at a time, it works. Two at a time, fine. But all of them and it does nothing... What is going on?

If you simply copied the iTunes folder, the ENTIRE folder to an external drive, then simply copy it back to the computer.
If you backed up some other way, how specifically did you backup iTunes?
There is really nothing to import, if iTunes was backed up properly.

  • 5 minutes to import a song starting with mid iTunes 7.x releases

Sometime around iTunes 7.5 or 7.6, my imports began to be excruiciatingly slow. iTunes simply stopped responding, as if it were frozen. These freeze periods typically last about 3 minutes. During these periods, CPU usage is between 75 and 100%, and RAM for the iTunes process runs at about 250 MB. When iTunes is responding normally CPU usage is low and RAM usage about 125 MB. I am running the latest version of iTunes --- 8.0.1.11.
I have no problems burning CDs, only importing them and doing some other routine file maintenancem, which I will describe later.
When importing to Windows Media Library, there is no degradation in performance. Imports are quick and run at about a 30x rate with no pauses between tracks. With iTunes, I click import and there is a 2-3 minute delay, the import to the first song starts, the drive starts spinning slowly, maybe gets up to 2x then stalls again at the end of the track. Again, another 2-3 minute wait period before the drive becomes active again. When iTunes is frozen, I cannot even minimize the application.
Some other information that may or may not be helpful:
---I have a very large library...about 41,000 items (190GB). However, when this problem started the library was still very large...about 35,000 items (160GB).
---Occassionally I have found bizarre "workarounds". In the last release of iTunes (8.0) for example, I accidentally found if I right clicked on the iTunes store link in the left pane during an import, it would generate some sort of interupt and the import would start to fly with no pauses between tracks. Sadly, this weird little glitch is now gone in 8.0.1.
---There are other performance problems that crop up when editing song info in the list (by the way, I only use list mode). Renaming songs can generate up to a 1 minute freeze-up. Deleting songs can generate an even longer freeze-up of about 2 minutes. If I open the songs in "GET INFO" mode though and advance forward and backward through the list, I can work around the file maintenance issues (though not the deleting issue).
---I have verified my registry filter settings are as Apple recommends.
---I have disabled the Bonjour service, to no avail.
---Since this happened long ago, I cannot be sure, but it's possible the problems started occuring when I installed the Samsung SH-S203N drives. Possibly some compatibility problem with the SATA controller and iTunes? The drive that originally came with the computer had no such problems....but that was running an early version of iTunes 7. So I'm not really sure if this is an iTunes or a Samsung related problem. But again...the problems are NOT limited to importing CDs only.
That's all I have. Any help would be appreciated. As a music management tool, I think iTunes is the best, but I'm at the end of my rope with these performance problems.

I hate to say that I have a worse situation than you do! I've got iTunes 8.0.1.11 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. It's fine as a playback station, but it freezes the computer when trying to import from CDs. It does this even when it's the only application running after a fresh reboot.
So to get music into iTunes on this desktop machine, I must first import on my MacBook Pro at home, then transfer to a memory stick and import folders from the memory stick. This actually takes less time than ripping with Windows Media Player, typing in identifying text for each track, and waiting for iTunes to convert the Windows audio files to AIFF or whatever.
Also, iTunes on Windows has no provision to allow a user to insert the accent marks in foreign languages. It's easy on the Mac, impossible in Windows. Why?
    Why? Why?
I suspect there are device driver problems Apple doesn't want to invest in solving. iTunes will PLAY CDs on my drive. It just won't import them.

  • Importing folders always says can't find location

    Hi,
I recently bought a new PC and tfr'd all my old music & folders waiting to be imported into iTunes onto my new computer, not a problem. I do have a slight niggle though, when I go to import folders into iTunes I have no problems it's just that I set iTunes to copy imported files so I can delete the folders afterwards, but after I delete the folders and I go to import my next file I get this little error box telling me it can't find the location of the current folder (because I've just deleted it) so why does iTunes open the folders when I click to import them in? I never had this problem on my old PC running Vista but not I'm on Windows 7 it's happened ever since.
As you can seen I get this message EVERYTIME I delete a folder recently imported, is there a fix for this? I imagine it may not be an iTunes issue but I'm hoping someone on here has had a similar issue as I can't word it right into Google.
    Thanks

iTunes remembers the last folder you imported with Add Folder to Library and tries to preset the "Browse for Folder" dialog to that location, generating an error if the folder doesn't exist. It ought to test for the presence of the folder first and default to a known location such as the media folder if not found but there it is. Change your workflow. If you're letting iTunes reorganise the media the way it likes to then just drop a copy into the Automatically add to iTunes folder. If you won't need the originals after import move instead of copying, though I'd recommend always having a backup...

I'm having the exact same issue, but still haven't figured out what it is. I note that at the top of this thread it indicates that there are two "helpful" entries and one "solved" entry, but I can't find the solved one, so maybe someone will repost it here or kindly link to it.

As I read through the excellent tutorial at http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/imovie_09stone.html I scroll down to the point where he talks about dragging music in from iTunes, which is what I'm trying to do. I can see, in his screen shot, the extra little icon that is a red oval and a white "1" in it. I don't get that icon when I am trying to drag my music into the video. I do get the green and white plus icon when I try to drag my music in. Also I DO get BOTH the red 1 and the green plus when I try dragging in a sound effect, which I can do with no problem. But why not the music?
I've been able to drag in music with no problem in other productions, so I can't figure out what is going on with this one. I'm sure there is a setting somewhere that got flipped, but I can't figure out where.
In desperation I also tried adding an extra title slide at the end of my video just to make sure there is more video time than music time in the production, but that didn't help at all.

    Hi
Due to some kind of copy protection in iTunes - I don't copy directly from this in iMovie
to my projects. (Most often the result of doing it in iMovie is a DVD without any sound)
    I do
    • In iTunes - collect needed audio into a new Playlist
    • then burn this out as an Audio-CD .aiff (NOT .mp3)
    • This CD I copy into a folder on my Mac (often containing other material that's connected to the project)
    • And then I drag and drop these .aiff files into my movie project in iMovie.
This works Greatly and even more so when I do my DVD.

  • Can't import songs from music library to itunes!

I have no problems importing songs from audio cds into itunes, but it won't recognize any of the files that i have in other folders of my computers (in mp3 format). and when i select 'import' and these songs, it just doesn't do anything. any suggestions to help??? thanks!
    dell inspiron 4100   Windows XP

Most of them are files burned from an audio CD onto another computer, and then saved onto a USB device and then transferred onto my computer (I no longer have the original CDs, hence the roundabout procedure). some of the files however, are simply from 'my music' folder that i had previously burned onto my computer before installing itunes. i've checked the status of all the files--and none are protected. any suggestions? thanks!
Reknath, where did these files come from? If there
were downloads from other websites, they are probably
protected & that's why you can't get them into iTunes.

  • I am re importing all my CD's into iTunes. I used a higher Kbps in mp3. I am up to almost 7,000 songs, and the Gb's used is almost at 50 gigs. Am I able to lower the Kbps so I can bring down the gigs used without having to re import the CD's all over agai

I am re importing all my CD's into iTunes. I am using a higher Kbps in mp3 format. I have over 6,000 songs so far, and I have already used around 50 gigabytes. I want to know that if I want to change to a lower Kbps instead in mp3 to lower the gigs used, how can I do that without having to re import all my CD's all over again. My iPod Classic is the 160 Gb model. My version of iTunes is 10.6,and I am using a Windows 7 computer.

You could try my script ConvertFormat and see if you like the results. Would be easier than inserting the CDs and correcting the tag info again. Just be aware this is a one-way trip. Once you've thrown away some quality to shrink the files you can't get it back without going back to the source. You may better off investing in a bigger drive.
If you just want to squeeze more on the iPod you can use the built-in iTunes option to convert files to a lower bitrate as they are added to the device.

  • "Date Added" sort order problem when importing folders

I sort by "Date Added" to view my iTunes library, and use the middle "view" button to view tracks grouped as albums with artwork. This works mighty well except when I'm importing folders containing the files in an album, such as those I get from eMusic--the tracks are displayed out of order when I do this. The only solution I've found so far is to import one track at a time. Any ideas how I can get those tracks in there in the right order when importing a folder? Any scripts hanging around that will do it right? Thanks to all....

What sort order do you have selecting in the sort drop-down?  There is no "correct" sort order.  You can sort on any metadata you can show in the Browser.  The sort drop-down is located in the top border of the Browser, near the left corner.  Every container in Aperture retains the sort order it last had.  When you manually move an Image in the Browser, the sort order is changed to "Manual".

  • Is is possible to convert the movies purchased on itunes to DVD?

Is is possible to convert the movies purchased on itunes to DVD? (In other words you would be burning the movie or tv shows to a blank DVD).

You can store just what you want on the external. Just set up folders for what you want. I have a music folder, movies and TV shows, and pictures folders. I also have mine partitioned for OSX and Windows. I have a few files I need if I am running on windows so I keep them on the windows side. I always keep a back up of my documents and a few other files it is a pain to download on the external.
You can also copy every folder and file on your machine to the external if it is big enough. This is a true copy not a back up file generated by a back up program. I like to do this if I get adventuresome and plan to do some major experimenting with my software. Saves having to reload everything if it crashes.
