Possible insecurity?  Console message help

So I just found this in my console. It appeared to be created on boot. I was wondering what it means and if it's normal:
22/04/08 12:51:37 PM kextd[10] writing kernel link data to /var/run/mach.sym
Thanks.

For some reason Safari started hanging on me yesterday when I start it up. The console messages I'm getting suggest that 1Password is related to the problem, but I think 1Password is having trouble accessing another resource in the OS that is broken. Can anyone help me?

  • Console messages help!!!!

    Merry Christmas All!!
I have been monitoring my console and I seem to be getting a lot of different messages, bit worried about it.
Should I be getting as many as 1000 per day?
Is it something I should be worried about?
Do I need to get a replacement mac as this one is barely 4 weeks old, all I have installed is WOW and bootcamp/windows and a couple of apps and widgets?
Different ones appear as I access/exit an app./folder/browser/iTunes etc and some always appear, here are few recent samples:

There are plenty more messages but to be completly honest I have not really noticed any crashes/freezes/slow downs other than just once when my system pref went a bit funny when trying to access mail pref., got the beach ball when I tried to click back to show all while my mac was trying to populate the mail accounts??
Are Macs this problematic as I don't remember having this many issues/glitches when I was using my XP Pro PC, hope I didnt waste my money, someone please reassure me???
Would appreciate any help or advise on this.
    Thanks....

I plead guilty of looking at the Console when I was NOT instructed to do so. I have no excuse whatsoever for my reckless behavior. Please don't make me listen to any more Christmas music before I am banished to the bottom of the fiscal cliff.

Any advice on how to obliterate the redundent message would be greatly appreciated.

  • Need help with really odd console messages

Aloha all, I'm attempting to track down some problems I've been experiencing. When I check my Console log it is constantly giving me these readings about applications I no longer have on my machine. How can I get rid of these, if I don't even have the applications? These readings are constant every couple of minutes. Any assistance will be very greatly appreciated!

Mahalo for the quick reply. I'm a bit timid about using the Terminal, when I typed it a warning message appeared telling me I could do some real damage and asked for my password is this normal?
that's normal. Also, you won't see your password when you type it in.
Those console messages indicate that you have some software from app4mac installed.
This Checkupagent, perhaps? You might want to try uninstalling it.
The launch agent com.app4mac.CheckUpAgent.plist was installed by this program. Also check to see if there is anything related in your login items in accounts preferences.

  • Console app: not logging "all messages" or "console messages".  HELP

I had a system freeze. After forced shutdown, repairing permissions, repairing disk, cleaning caches etc.
    All running BUT:
In the console app under "LOG DATABASE QUERIES" the entries all messages and console message are no longer showing entries!!!
The last ones are up until the crash.
I don't know what else to do.
    HELP

you can follow the instructions given on MacFixit:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090122213555897
just deleting the asl files within the /var/log/asl directory may be enough to fix the problem; the asl manager will be forced to reinitialize the logs writing that appear in the log database database queries on the console.

  • Invalid SOS parameters Console message on import?

I imported my iPhoto 11 library the other day and there were no error messages from Aperture 3.1 itself, but when I checked my Console messages, I had about 30 messages like this:
    1/16/11 11:43:14 PM [0x0-0x122122].com.apple.Aperture[2821] Sun Jan 16 23:43:14 KarlMacPro.local Aperture[2821] <Error>: Invalid SOS parameters for sequential JPEG

I didn't find anything helpful googling...
Anybody have any idea that "Invalid SOS parameters for sequential JPEG" means, and if I should be concerned? As you can see, no hint in the message as to WHICH image it refers to, so I can only imagine importing a few events at a time to try to track down where it is happening, if it is something to be worried about.
    Thanks,
    Karl

That's coming from the JPEG decoding software. SOS stands for *start of scan*. A sequential JPG is an image where all the data flows from top to bottom as opposed to a progressive scan JPG were the data is interlaced.
Anyway to make a long story short, it could indicate that the software encountered corrupted JPG images. Its not a fatal error in the sense of causing a program failure just possibly an image or images that may not display or display correctly.
You could search the console logs to see if the message ever showed up from iPhoto. At this point there isn't to much you can do about it. If your library isn;'t to big you could try and give a quick look at the JPG files to see if anything looks amiss.

  • TimeMachine Console messages lie!?

Mac OS 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 13"
I have just spent an incredibly frustrating week trying to solve what I now believe to be a non-problem on my machine, caused by the messages TimeMachine writes (or, perhaps, doesn't write) to the Console log.  I would like to understand what was actually going on, and am hoping someone out there can help fill in the blanks.
A friend with a 15" MBP, also running 10.6.8, was having severe TimeMachine problems -- backups taking 2 hours to complete after minimal changes to the disk.  We discovered how to filter Console messages so that we were only seeing TM messages (File->New Database Search then "Sender Contains backupd" in the Database Search window).  Initially we found that TM was copying 165,000+ files for a total backup size in the KB or at biggest, a few MB.  I started using my MBP as a temporary staging disk in extracting backups in trying to solve the problem on his machine.
In the end we reformatted his disk and reinstalled the system off his DVD.  After the initial, expected long backup we did another one, just to see what was transferred that time.  No more huge numbers of files...sighs of relief.  One further backup, just to make sure, and...uh-oh: the numbers of files being transferred in both manual backups were identical.  For a machine which contains upwards of 700,000 files, this did not seem reasonable, so we considered that the problem had only been reduced in severity.
Then I decided to run a quick pair of backups on my machine, just to check that this behaviour was not somehow being transferred to mine during the extraction of backups mentioned above.  Whereas the Console messages for previous backup runs (from other days) reported different numbers of files, suddenly my machine was also exhibiting this strange behaviour of transferring the same numbers of files on every backup.  The numbers of files differed depending on the machine, but the pattern was constant for a given machine.  The usual pattern was that x number of files was transferred in the first backup pass (it appears that TM nearly always performs two passes, even though its window in System Prefs does not always show this) and then y number of files was transferred in the second pass.  An immediate subsequent backup would again show x files in the first pass and y files in the second.  And so on.  Sometimes the quantity of bytes transferred also followed this pattern, but not always.
The reason that I say "usual", "sometimes" and "always" above is that at that point we discovered that one can restore a system "wholesale" from a TM
backup, via the item in the Utilities menu when the machine is started up from the system DVD.  We had known clean backups to go back to, and our days then devolved into a pattern of (1) reformatting the HD, then (2) doing a wholesale restore from a clean backup, and then (3) trying to migrate files changed since that backup without triggering the strange behaviour (and failing, thus starting all over again).
After several days of this, and a migration attempt performed with pairs of backups after each change migration, and migrating the changes as "manually" as possible (i.e. not copying or moving files in the Finder, but instead opening the newer version, copying the contents, opening the older version, replacing the contents, then saving) and finding that even that did not prevent the strange behaviour, we started looking for utilities which operate on TM backups.  We found TimeTracker and BackupLoupe, and finally were able to see what was actually in the backups.
Imagine our surprise to find that for a backup which produced the following Console messages:
    17/08/12 11:12:22 am          com.apple.backupd[1751]          Starting standard backup
    17/08/12 11:12:22 am          com.apple.backupd[1751]          Backing up to: /Volumes/Rugged/Backups.backupdb

that the actual contents appear to be this: (both programs report the same contents, so either they are both wrong or they are both right)
If we assume that both programs are right, then one must inescapably conclude one of the following two things about the TM messages in the Console:
    (1) they are lies
    (2) they are not the whole truth: that TM is indeed transferring those numbers of files, and then for some reason deleting most of them (and not reporting this)!
    This begs the questions:
    (a) If the files really are being transferred, then why is it the same number of files every time, the same pattern to each backup, when the backups are being initiated one after the other, i.e. surely there isn't the time for such numbers of files to be changed, and surely it isn't possible that it's exactly the same numbers of files every time?
    (b) If the vast majority of files transferred are being deleted, why?  And why are they being transferred in the first place?
    (c) If this is happening, why is the Console not advising of this?  TM appears to fulsomely report its behaviour -- why would it not report this?
    (d) What on earth are these files in any case?
Any help in getting closer to an understanding of this phenomenon would be gratefully received.  Having just lost literally a week of our lives to it, it would be satisfying to at least know what it was!

The number of files is always somewhat high.  We suspect it's counting metadata (such as permissions, extended attributes, etc.) separately.  Ordinarily that doesn't indicate a problem.
And yes, Time Machine often makes a second "pass," if changes were made during the first one.  Often it's so quick you won't see the messages on the preferences window, or if the sizes are about the same, you may not realize that they changed.
However, if you frequently get file counts in the area of many thousands, with only a few KB or MB, that take extremely long, you may have a problem that seems unique to some users running 10.6.8.  A few of them were able to solve it by re-installing Snow Leopard, but only going back to 10.6.7, not 10.6.8, via the "combo" update.  See Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.
If you do go back to 10.6.7, be aware of the 3rd item in #D5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Brand new iMac and a ton of Console Messages already

Hello all, I am new to OSX and Mac as I just purchased a 27" iMac 3.06 ghz model. I think I am having some issues with my Mac. I use a screen calibrator called Spyder3Pro and for some reason it generates a console message every couple minutes. The only thing I can think of is that it takes an ambient light measurement so, this could possible be why I am getting the messages. I am just not sure. Here are some of the messages:

The console keeps track of every step . . .
So of course there are going to be a lot of notations.
It's the repeating over and over that means you have to pay attention.
Most of the notations that you see are normal, usually.

  • Please can anyone explain a surge in Console messages?

I'm running OS 10.6.7, Safari 5.0.5 on an iMac, model identifier 9,1, Intel core duo, processing at 2.66 ghz.
Looking at my Console logs, I see a multitude of messages that look like this:
    30/04/2011 13:06:34          [0x0-0x36036].com.apple.Safari[540]          Canceleld; 0; Empty 1
[The misspelling of 'cancelled' is pasted directly from the log.]
each group of repetitions is followed by this:
30/04/2011 13:06:34          [0x0-0x36036].com.apple.Safari[540]          *** process 540 exceeded 500 log message per second limit  -  remaining messages this second discarded ***
The most recent changes made prior to this epidemic were as follows:
A few days ago, in order to stop endless "attempt to pop an unknown autorelease pool" messages about Western Digital Drivemanager, I got rid of the WD drive manager, but continue to use a Passport external drive for Time Machine without any obvious problems
A few days before that, I upgraded from Safari 5.0.4 to 5.0.5
I'd be interested to hear if anyone is has seen similar behaviour, which makes it hard to read other Console messages, and very grateful to hear any suggestions or solutions.

Looks like the problem stems from that update. I'd post here where the Safari people may be more able to help you. You want to take care of this not only because it's making it difficult to read in Console, but because these errors will eat up your drive space.

  • Installing new HD. Are these console messages indicative of problems?

I am installing a new 1TB drive in my early 2011 17" Macbook Pro. Ever since installing Mavericks last year, I have had trouble with slowness, keychain, mail, slow populating, etc., but now it is working more normally. I have turned off keychain to save passwords because it created lots of problems at the beginning.
My mail seems to be slow in starting (I have a lot of saved mail and the Mail folder is 32GB).
I have lots of the following console message, 60 at a time, a couple of pages, and at times less.
5/30/14 10:18:34.075 AM secd[222]:  s3dl_query_row decode genp,rowid=15 failed (-26275): The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -26275 - ks_crypt: e00002bc failed to unwrap item (class 6, bag: -3) Item can't be decrypted on this device, ever, so drop the item.)
Sometimes I get a lot of windowserver messages:
    5/29/14 11:35:31.810 PM talagent[175]: CGSBindSurface: Invalid window 0x35
    5/29/14 11:35:31.810 PM WindowServer[90]: _CGXWindowRightsRelinquish: Invalid window 0x35

    5/29/14 11:35:31.812 PM WindowServer[90]: CGXReleaseWindowList: Invalid window 49 (index 1/11)
I opened Contacts and the console had the following messages:
    5/31/14 12:02:04.509 AM com.apple.SecurityServer[14]: Session 100031 created
5/31/14 12:02:04.512 AM com.apple.security.XPCKeychainSandboxCheck[1039]: Can't get dir or base (likely out of memory) for
    5/31/14 12:02:04.513 AM com.apple.security.XPCKeychainSandboxCheck[1039]: Can't get sandbox fs extension for , status=-1 errno=No such file or directory ext=(null)
5/31/14 12:02:04.728 AM secd[222]:  s3dl_query_row decode genp,rowid=15 failed (-26275): The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -26275 - ks_crypt: e00002bc failed to unwrap item (class 6, bag: -3) Item can't be decrypted on this device, ever, so drop the item.)
Are these messages indicative of a problem? I do not want to migrate my existing data to my new hard drive if I do not have to. If these are normal messages, I will not try to re- install all programs. The  secd[222] messages started with my key chain problems. Do I need to remedy some issues before I transfer my data to my new hard drive?
    Thanks

I had unchecked iCloud keychain weeks ago because it seemed to generate all kinds of error messages. I checked it again and approved with my iPhone. This unleashed a slew of console messages that I had eliminated by keeping the iCloud Keychain unchecked. I have listed a sampling below:

  • Console Messages - Every 10 seconds

I recently checked the Console Messages for my system and notice the following messages being posted every 10 seconds:
    com.apple.launchd[1] 1 Warning (org.xinetd.xinetd439) Exited with exit code: 1
com.apple.launchd[1] 1 Warning (org.xinetd.xinetd) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
    com.apple.launchd[1] 1 Error (org.xinetd.xinetd440) posix_spawnp("xinetd", ...): No such file or directory
    Is this normal?
If not how should I go about troubleshooting the cause of these messages.
I am a recent convert to Apple and OS X and not familiar with the terminology.
    Can anyone help?

launchd is the system process responsible for launching (and relaunching) other system or background processes that your system needs to function correctly. It knows to do this based on lots of configuration files, each of which describes a unique process for launchd to monitor. Most of these configuration files are kept in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/. You can take a look at some of them if you're curious -- they're just XML and usually pretty short.
xinetd is another program/process/daemon (all these words are basically synonymous) that behaves very much like launchd. xinetd, however, is not created by Apple, but is an open source piece of software. OS X, pre 10.4, used to use xinetd to perform the actions now being done by launchd. As of 10.4, launchd replaced xinetd.
For whatever reason on your system, launchd is trying to start xinetd. Odd. Have you recently installed something, perhaps via Mac Ports or Fink or something like that?
Making this message stop is not overly difficult, since all you need to do is tell launchd to disable it as a service it monitors. This is easy to do from the command line, but since you're a new Mac user maybe that's not so simple An easier (i.e. graphical) way to accomplish the same thing is to download and install Lingon:
    http://lingon.sourceforge.net/
This will allow you to browse these launchd configuration files and make changes to them. Via this program, you can disable xinetd and you should see those console messages stop.

  • I keep getting this Console message, constantly repeating. What does it mean and how do I fix it?

This Console message repeates endlessly. I suspect this may be one of the reasons this machine is running slowly? In any event, doesn't seem normal to have an endlessly repeating error message.
    7/21/13 3:51:38 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (scManagerD[81914]) posix_spawn("/Applications/SafeConnect.app/Contents/MacOS/scManagerD", ...): No such file or directory
    Any help is appreciated.

You have something installed called "SafeConnect?" Or did you remove it but not use the uninstaller?
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper 2.0.1
        2. AppDelete 3.2.6
        3. Automaton 1.50
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash 1.8.2
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
      10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1

when i was in the preferences i noticed that i had 2 different files labeled com.apple.dock but the one difference was that one of the extensions was .plist like you said but there was also another with .db what does this mean?
Leave the the .db (database) file alone, for now at least. Mine's empty, but there may be something important in yours.
also could u elaborate more on adding .old should i add it before or after the extension?
It doesn't really matter; you're doing this only to "hide" it from the Dock app, so it will make a new, default, one when you restart. Hopefully, that will fix the problem and you can delete the old one.
But you don't want to lose track of it. If the problem isn't fixed, you can delete the new one and revert to the old one by just renaming and restarting again.

Also, before that I was getting messages about not being able to show some fonts. So I went to Font Book and pushed the button to resolve duplicate font issues. However, then I could not even pull up some things at all. So now, I have all the fonts back on. I got cocktail and did all the tasks. but this was left after those tasks were ran.
