Possible iPhone 5 battery problem?

Recently my iPhone 5 (which is less than six months old) has started having problems. When I plug it in to charge (via the iPhone 5 cord into a wall charger) the plug symbol appears on the battery rather than the lightning bolt charge symbol, and the percentage remains at a fixed percentage no matter how long I charge it for. When I unplug the phone the percentage may read, for example, 37%, within half an hour that may change to 83% and minutes later it will read 2%. Also, the screen has once turned blue with black stripes, a fully blue screen for about half an hour, and once when composing a message, white and black stripes. My phone will also repeatedly turn on and off. Is this a problem that can be isolated to the battery? Is it a more extensive hardware problem? My phone has not been dropped or wet or had anything physically untoward happen to it.

Could be. Try getting a new battery. Or taking it to the Apple Store and having them check it out.

  • Solved my iPhone 5 Battery Problems: Maybe it can help you!

Hi every one, I saw many topics regarding battery problems with the iPhone 5. I responded to one discussion describing what I did to solve the iPhone 5 battery dying fast on me. So I thought I'd make a discussion here to help out other users with the same problem.
I would have 25-30% drop with in the hour and all I did was text a couple of my friends. I was using an iPhone 4 for the longest time, and on that phone I was able to watch videos, listen to music and use all the other features of the phone. The battery still lasted me the whole day, I was getting  worried that I wouldn't be able to use the iPhone 5 the same with out it dying on me fast.
My friend suggested draining the battery and then charging the phone to see if any improvements were seen. I did that and I saw a small change in the battery strength. I drained the battery two more times, and that is when I saw a huge difference.
I use my Phone as my iPod when I work out, and I run continuous music on it for 1.5-2 hours straight, along with sending texts to my friends. In this duration I would only use 15-20% which was a huge improvement from before. I would say that the battery life was on par with my iPhone 4 battery! It is such a relief, now I can use my iPhone 5 to it's fullest potential without having to worry it'll die on me fast.
I recommend other iPhone 5 users try draining their batteries a couple of times before charging as well if they are experiencing problems.
    Hope this helps!
    Dylan

I would let the battery completely die before I would charge it again. I would keep 3g off and only turn it on if I'm going to use it and turn it off again. Because the phone uses more power for the 3g/4g that the battery dies even faster.
I text a lot to friends so I'm constantly texting through out the day and when I work out continously run music on it for close to 2hours. It would only drain 15-20% of the battery, which really is a huge improvement.
I also use Siri quite often through wifi and it barely uses any battery power. Try letting the phone die until it turns off a couple of times before you charge it. That is what I did before a friend requested doing that after I was getting fraustrated with the battery power.

  • Iphone 4s battery problems PLEASE HELP

I got my 4s about a week ago. The first couple of days i noticed the battery would go down pretty quick. So i looked online and seen all these different ways to save battery life by switching the settings around. I did all of the recommended changes ( location, brightness, etc.) i had already charged the phone the same way i would charge any phone before i read the full discharge full recharge. I did that two nights in a row and since then i let it get to atleast 2% before i charge it. Last night i put it on the charger around 20% maybe a little more and it definatley overcharged for an hour or two before i took it off. When i go to work i leave it in my locker and go on it during breaks. Normally it would never change the % while on standby and it would go down 1 maybe 2% while i use it. Today by the time it was lunch break it was down to 80%. As i type this my battery is at 64% with 2 hours and 31 minutes usage and 16 hours, 5 minutes of standby.
What happened to it? It bothers me so much cause i love the phone and it was doing good until today.
I JUST NOTICED that there is a new software update iOS 5.1.1. Could this sudden battery problem have occured because i am running older software??!!

You've probabaly just installed and left running more applications. Applications dont entirely close when you hit the home screen. You've probabaly notice when you turn on your phone you have to wait through the loading screen for many applications. After that they sit on the memory of the phone, and the phone uses some battery retaining the state of each application. In Stand-By and still when powered down, your battery will slowly drain (less so when powered down).
You may want to start force closing apps or occasionally powering down your iPhone. Additionally, the battery is not a NiCad battery where you can't charge it when it's at 80% or you'll risk causing the "battery memory" to max at 80%. The iPhone batteries are fine to be charged when they're at 95%. That said, Apple does recommend dispersing the battery to 0% atleast once a month. These batteries do have a battery charge cycle, ie: after so many charges the drain will begin to occur, but it's alot better than say your R/C car battery, or your typical rechargable triple 'A' battery.
On another note, I do recommend you run the latest updates, if there ever is a battery issue and they know about it, they'll try to address the issue.

  • IPhone 5 Battery Problems

My iPhone 5 that I got a week ago has had one real problems with the battery.  I have tried all the normal solutions like turning LTE off, location services, turning down the brightness of my screen, restarting my phone and so on. It's seems lik I can just watch my battery like go down as I watch it. Losing a percent or two every 1-2 mins. Listening to music and doing other things speeds its decline even more. I am not sure if its hardware in my phone or something else. I have updated to iOS 6.1 and yet still no help. Is this a problem with my phone, network, or software?  Any suggestions it took 4% of my battery life just to post this using my phone.

Like many of the previous updates, 8.3 gratuitously adds or turns on many services that can drain the battery. So you will need to go thru the entire Settings menagerie of controls and turn off everything you don't need and/or reset back to your liking.
As a side note, for iPhone 5 within a certain range of serial #'s Apple has a battery replacement program which you may want to consider as it essentially gives you a new phone (fresh new battery), if you qualify: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/

  • Iphone 4s battery problem with ios 8.1

I actualized my iphone 4s with ios 8.1 and the battery dures 8-10 hours, meanwhile with ios 8.0 dured more than a day with the same use. I turn on the phone at 8:00am with full battery and at 6:00pm the battery has less than %10 charge. Could ios 8.1.1 fix this problem?

Thanks for the help. I've tried to do what the instructions of the blog says, but I can't see the battery ussage and standby information. I don't know why, before the instalation of ios 8.1. I saw this information... What can I do to see it again?

  • Iphone 3GS battery problem

have a problem with my battery on iphone 3gs, i charge it untill 100% and after few min it turns off and it says that battery is empty so i can use it only while its plugged in..i went to store and told them to change battery and they said they have tested it and that nothings wrong
    what do I do?

    Phil,
    You wrote:
"Since many of us are not having the problems you cited, I suspect yours was abnormal in some way, whether the "genius" wanted to admit it or not."
I'm not really interested in arguing about it, but your comment really struck me, so here are my two cents:
Given the amount of complaints both on these forums and externally around the internet, coupled with the numerous reviews by a variety of different magazines, tech sites, and other sources regarding poor battery performance of the 3Gs, I hardly think that "abnormal" is really the appropriate term. Perhaps for working batteries, but not for the terrible results that I and many others have experienced. Indeed, lower expectations than the published promises seems par for the course.
Moreover, the fact that not one Apple representative with whom I spoke on the phone or in person (totaling 4) acknowledged that they had heard of any problems with regard to battery performance in the 3Gs shows at best an utter failure to do any due diligence on a product they are selling, and at worst a total lack of respect by lying to a customer. I would be genuinely shocked if these employees, who are in customer care, have, as they purported, heard nothing regarding battery issues with the 3Gs. In fact, I simply don't believe it.
I noticed that you post a lot. I'm curious, do you work for Apple?

  • Iphone 3gs battery problems with os 4

I am facing unusual battery drain issues with iphone 3gs with os 4. The phone is getting off suddenly @ 30% battery power. Sometimes the battery drops from 100 to 85% suddenly etc. I read in some posts that even 5.01 is having the same issue with iphone 3gs. So I am afraid of upgrading to os5. Everything was fine at OS 4.2. Any suggestions ?

i'm sick of everyone popping into these threads and saying "check your settings, or disable push/wifi/other features".
These features all worked fine on 3.1.3 for me. I have restored my iphone 3GS as a new phone, reapplied my settings manually (not from a backup) and I still get this issue.
30 mins ago I put my phone in my pocket with 50% battery. Pulled it out just now, its toasty warm, and has 19% (wait no just dropped to 18% as I unlocked it) battery left.
Obviously, something is going wrong in the software, and is using cpu resources constantly, draining the battery life. CPU usage explains the phone being exceptionally warm. Having push enabled on an exchange email account (Google Hosted Apps here) shouldn't tax the cpu like that.
I'm taking mine into an apple store tomorrow and asking for a replacement. My warranty runs out on the 19th July, and i'm not going to wait around for a possible 'fix' and then be told "sorry its not under warranty anymore".

  • IPhone 4 Battery problem - Apple solution

    Hi,
I complained to Apple on thier "chat line" that I had a problem with the battery running down.  They suggested ideas I had heard on the forum before and to leave it 48 hours to see if it made a difference. They then agreed to call me back at a mutually agreed time and to their credit they did that bang on time.  After explaining the problem and that their suggested solutions did not work they gave me two options:
One return the (under warranty) phone to a Genus bar and get them to look at it and if they could not fix it they would replace the phone FOC.
Two pay £29 and apple will send me a brand new phone out to me and I return the defective phone with the courier that delivers it.
As my nearest Genus Bar was some 30 miles away and when calculating the fuel, time, inconvenience etc. it proved about the same in charges so I opted for option two.
The phone arrived less that 20 later, I plugged it into the iMac and iTunes recovered everything right up to date and now I have phone who's battery last nearly 72 hours!!
Very efficient of Apple and I congratulate them on a speedy solution.
Some of you may not agree but I am a happy hector!

Like I said in my last post, the OP has the phone plugged during this process, common sense says that a battery should stay at %100 after a full charge, not deplete the battery while the charger is still plugged in, except for most Apple products, if you do not remove the charger after %100, the battery will deplete itself until it's unplugged, it's not an issue of running apps or other battery killing apps and features
@OP, I just took a closer look at your screenshot, a fellow Portal fan I see , took me a bit to notice it was GLaDOS in potato form (after Wheatly takes over), I used to have Still Alive set as my ringtone on my Eris before getting the iPhone
Maybe I've been lucky with all of my Apple products but I have never had this occur on any of them. I have left things plugged in well pass being 100% charged and they didn't have batteries that started to deplete itself until unplugged. I don't know if this should be considered normal or not, but I surely wouldn't consider it to the norm and just write it off as such. Like I said, maybe I've been luck all of these years.
Well, as I type this, my MacBook Air is currently plugged in, light on the MagSafe adapter is green (meaning fully charged), and I have the plug symbol inside the battery symbol (instead of the lightning bolt, also meaning fully charged) yet the battery indicator says 99%
While I personally don't think it's a big issue, It does seem to be quite common, and I have noticed this both on my MacBook Air and my iPhone
If it means anything, I have had my laptop plugged in for about a day if not longer, so you might not notice it if you unplug it in about 1~5 hours after a full charge

  • Iphone 5 battery problems since ios 6.1 update

Hi, Just sent my iphone 5 back to apple after poor battery life since did ios 6.1 update, has anybody else had this problem?
Also Apple say they are sending me a replacement unit, is this new or refurb?
    Many thanks.

  • IPhone 5 Battery Problem...PLEASE HELP

My phones battery has been draining on it's own. I don't know what the problem is. I go to sleep fully charged and I unplug the charger and when I wake up it's completely drained DEAD. I've tried resetting but it still keeps happening. If I leave my phone in my purse when I'm out, it gets drained too. I can't restore it right now for that restore back up thing because I don't have access to my laptop for a while what can I do to fix this
IT'S NOT PLUGGED IN. When I wake up and try to turn it on, it just gives me the red battery and tells me to charge. So I charge but then it drains quickly again without being used. WHAT DO I DO?

Double click the home button and find out what apps are running in the background. Then hold them down until they start to shake and click the minus sign until no apps are actively running. Also, turn push notifications off and see if that changes anything. I hope this helps!

  • Iphone 4 Battery problem ios 6.0.1

I bought an iphone 4 with ios 5.11 on ebay, there are few pixels do not working, the speaker is faulty and the power button is not working. Yesterday I updated to iOS 6.0.1, and now the battery is defective. The iphone boots again and again and when it comes again, then only at the socket. and the battery says 1 or 2% of the full battery symbol. I also restored it twice
there is a reason for an exchange at apple? (The warranty is expired)

There are loads of posts about this all over forums.  It's an ios6 issue.  If your battery was fine before ios6 then I doubt you need to replace it.

  • Could this be another clue to the iphone 4s battery problem?

I have an iphone 4s on Sprint.  My battery life is bad if I use any services at all, not just the reported time setting location service.
I have registered this phone in something that Sprint calls the Family Locator.   I live in a hilly, rural neighborhood with just one accessible Sprint tower (and no other cell phone reception at all).
When I query the location of my Sprint iphone 4s, the accuracy is 1.4 miles.  Horrible!    When I query the location of my husband's Sprint phone, a basic non-smart Sanyo clamshell, in the same room, the accuracy is 57 yards.   So, there must be something very weak in the response of the iphone4s to an external query.  Extra resistance in the antenna, maybe?   Or is the older non-smart phone a different frequency that can sense the weak signal from other towers (for location purposes) from farther away?
I'm totally at a loss here.  Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Monica

  • Iphone 5 battery problem with iOS 7

I am experiencing horrible battery time since I upgraded to iOS 7. I feel like I'm down to almost 60% of battery power. Anyone else experiencing battery power issues with their iPhone 5 and the new iOS?

Strangely enough, the phone seem to have stabilized by itself, as if it had to learn my ways before getting back to normal. I did turn off some notifications, as well as some localizations, but that did not have any effect on my battery. After 2-3 recharges though it's now back to normal.
    @razmee209, Thanks for your help.

  • Iphone 5 battery problems? Replacement?

About a  week ago i bought my iphone 5 and the battery drains even if i m not using it at , much more even when the phone is off! On off, battery drains 30-40% in. 3 hrs. I think it s not normall. Do i have the right for a replacement?

Did you restore your iPhone 5 from a backup? This can bring over the wrong battery profiles.
If so, go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. (THIS WILL WIPE THE PHONE).
Then set the phone up as a new phone and import all your content from both iCloud and iTunes without restoring from a backup. Then cycle your battery (Drain to 0% so it dies, then charge to 100% without interruption). Repeat the cycling for a few days.
Didn't restore from a backup? Spend a few days cycling your battery.
    Battery tips:
Turn off unneeded location services and notifications. Turn off wifi and blutooth when not using them. Turn off LTE if you don't really need it. Turn down your screen brightness and enable auto brightness.
If all else fails, book a Genius Bar appointment, the technicians will be happy to look at it for you!

  • Iphone 4s battery problem

After ios 6.1.3 my battery is getting worse!
Yesterday I switched off my phone with 30-32% of battery, this mornig I switched on and the battery was 20%: during the night it lost about 10% of charge without using it!
And another problem is the recharge of battery: now the battery recharge in about an hour from 5% to 100%, before the update was about 2,5-3 hours.
    What can I do?
When will apple solve this problem with a new upgrade??

Try to turn off background apps by double click home button and u will see all your background apps which are currently running. And try not to use all the battery and then charge it, it will decrease the battery life. So the best thing can do is charge it whenever you have time. Hope that helps
