Possible iphone 5 power shortage

When I go to charge my iPhone five it continuously connects and disconnects from the charger (on its own) and when I plugged it into my MacBook it will not allow it, saying that the USB is using too much power. Any ideas what is going on?

This is a defect on iPhone 5 power button that wears out in about 13-14 months of usage just after you go out of warranty. Apple is aware of this issue but chooses not to accept this as a defect. I asked the Genius bar guy and they told me this is a common case recently and costs $269 to replace your phone. There is no repair option. I am very mad and believe Apple needs to take action or will lose their customers. All iPhone 5 owners that I know started having this problem in the month of 13 -14.
I believe if the numbers go high, Apple may start a recall program. Please encourage anyone with this problem to post here. $700 phone should not wear out this soon. Apparently the part is defective on almost all iPhone 5 devices.

WTH? Seriously?!?! Same issue here: Purchased iPhone 5 in Sep 2012. Power button went wonky shortly after recent iOS 7.0.4 install. Figured power button issue was a software bug. Been a loyal Apple customer (2009 Mac Pro, and several iPhones) since 2009. I will be looking elsewhere - at DIY water-cooled PC/Linux, and Android phablets - come August 2014. Thanks for the heads up!

Can I use my iPhone charger for my iPad?  It seems to charge a lot slower than the original charger that I received with my iPad...

The quickest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes.

  • WHY IPHONE POWER CABLE IS VERY VERY VERY POOR!!!

I bought "SEVERAL TIMES" of iphone power cable and its always not working after few months (2-3 months only). I handled my accesories with care and still POWER CABLE of iphone is very fragile which is not really good for all iphone users. How come Apple accesory like power cable is EXPENSIVE and yet their product is not durable??? In other words VERY VERY POOR QUALITY. Among all accesories of Apple product CHARGER/POWER CABLE is the most important item for us (THE CONSUMERS) will able to use Apple product.

In just 7-8 months we have replaced at least 6 cable not charging anymore. They have either fallen apart or breaking of wire. So poor quality, we have not experienced with other similar equipment from other suppliers than the Apple. Only once did we get replaced a cable from Apple despite the fact that we delivered two this time

  • Iphone power supply 70 V on shield

    Hi,
I was wondering why the metal frame on my iphone 3GS feels that strange stub
but only during charging with the original power supply.
So I measured the voltage from the metal frame against ground and found suprising 70 Volt.
It breaks down to 20 Volt as soon I touch it ..so it is only a small current of 0,02 mA.
But anyhow I wonder what crude circuit layout is behind that.
I repeated the measurement with an iphone 4 power supply and came to 80V.

While it is in general true, that more info is necessary, yet still I would inspect caps on the mainboard first. Are they bloated or leaking?
These old mobos have all bad caps... it is more like a pleague, just check the there pages there:
    http://trodas.wz.cz/index.php?act=ST&f=16&t=432
So in short - check for possible hardware failure. I bet it is. What else could go wrong, when one day it is working and another day ít refuse to work? Try other PSU first, just to be sure. PSUs have bad caps too... in fact, they are build with almost exclusively bad caps.

  • Problems with multiple USB devices. (Possible Low Power on USB Bus)

I believe I'm having an issue with the USB bus or one of my devices that I have installed on my iMac.
I purchased this iMac along with a printer (HP C4280 All-in-One) as part of a promotion deal. I also have wireless logitech USB mouse, and iPhone and an 80gb 5th Gen iPod.
My problem has to do with syncing the iPod and iPhone. Normally I have the printer attached to the iMac along with the USB mouse. Both devices function as expected. However I have problems when I connect the iPhone or iPod.
iPod Symptoms: When I connect the iPod the iPod screen shows the flashing red circle with a line but iTunes never launches and the iPod never syncs.
iPhone Symptoms: When I connect the iPhone the iPhone screen says Sync in Progress and iTunes does show the iPhone in the list of devices but a dialog appears giving me one of two messages (that I've seen so far) - [msg 1] Your iPhone is corrupt please disconnect then reconnect to restore. [msg 2] iPhone device timed out.
I've been dealing with this problem for a couple months and found that if I disconnect the printer (HP C4280) then connected either other device then everything works just fine.
I downloaded XCode 2.5 and launched the USB Prober utility. Then plugged in each device in turn and found some interesting findings.
When connecting the iPhone (1st attempt) the USB Logger reported; (iTunes displayed msg 1 from above)

I'm suspicious of the USB Low Power Notice. If this is true then I suspect the my iMac might need some type of repair. However I am also suspicious of USB Device violating the USB Spec Error. Although this is the message that appears when I plug in the iPhone or iPod I don't think I can assume that error relates to the iPod or iPhone. The error doesn't specify which USB Device is in violation.
My current workaround is to unplug the printer every time I sync the iPhone or iPod which is cumbersome. I'm also worried that repeated connecting/disconnecting of USB plug for the printer will over time damage the USB port.
I'm not sure what options I have here. Can anyone provide some suggestions or information that might provide some insight.
    Best Regards,
    xgnomex

A-Ha! Now I'm feeling like my 1.5 hours of reading this forum are not wasted, since I've found others with similar symptoms.
I've only had my iMac for two weeks today. I've got some new accessories & have experimented with the ones I've had awhile (various USB external drives). My model has 3 USB ports, one of which is taken by the keyboard, of course.
Over the weekend, I picked up an MS Office 2008 Upgrade and also an HP Officejet Pro L7680 all-in-one. I only mention the Office upgrade because I installed it on the same day as the printer, but it's possibly unrelated.
I actually have a Belkin 4-port hub--not the same one suggested in this thread, but externally powered with it's own A/C adapter. (It's a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 r-Port Hub, model F5U234 Rev.3, and I used it with a previous iMac G3 CRT with no problem.)
So with a LaCie 100 GB USB Mobile Drive in one of the iMac's ports, and the HP L7680 in the iMac's third port, or the HP via the Belkin hub in iMacs the third hub, here are some of the symptoms I've seen:
    1) while browsing in Firefox, suddenly the mouse-cursor will "freeze" (get stuck) in a pull-down selector...sometimes it unfreezes, but eventually (like on the next pull-down menu) the keyboard & mouse will shut off (and if you wait & the iMac goes to sleep, the keyboard won't let me enter my unlock password when I wake the iMac with the Apple Remote)
    2) when trying to open a document from the LaCie in MS Word, Word freezes and the keyboard & mouse go dead--terminal beachball--to restart the computer, I have to hold in the power button
    3) when trying to print a message in Mail, Finder freezes (though the print job does finish)
These symptoms seem strange! Hey, it's just supposed to work, right? But everything has limits, so my question becomes, "how much stuff can I hook up at once?"
I wonder if this Apple article is addressing this issue:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25243
especially when it says "Two high-bandwidth devices or two isochronous devices cannot be connected to a single Universal Serial Bus (USB)."
So only two hi-speed USB devices can be connected "to the same bus" simultaneously? I'm not entirely sure I understand what "isochronous" means, but I'm thinking I need to peel my printer off the USB somehow, maybe via Airport Express--?
Does anyone know for sure about USB limitations? Thanks.
Also, xgnomex, how/where did you find that "USB Logger"? Is that something iPhone-specific, or is it an OS X log in a Library somewhere?

  • IPhone Power Button

Hello, yesterday i dropped my iPhone in the rain and it stayed for a good 20 mins. i made a appointment with genius bar, we went over the iPhone water sensor being changed and how i cannot get a new one. They said the best thing to do would be to put it in rice and give it time. at that point the problems were: backlight, touchpad wouldn't work, would not power up, sim reader wouldn't detect card, camera wasn't detected, "This accessory was not made for iPhone" nothing was plugged in. After it dried i plugged it in and it would work. Just about everything was fixed. now my problems are:
~The power button: Biggest problem, it will not work... half of it is stuck down and none of it will work.
~Home button: I'd say this is fixed, but the first time i plugged it in today every time i pushed it it would take a screenshot instead of returning home, i restarted it and it was fine.
~+I cannot boot it without it being on the charger, even though it indicates full power..... When off the only way i can do anything would be to push the home button (as the power one doesn't work) that takes me to the apple boot logo for a good 5 secs, then it restarts... this goes on in a ever lasting loop, theres no stopping it.+
    Any suggestions?
right now a good way to turn it off would be nice....

    Hello starsell,
Allan has described your options pretty well.
It seems possible that the drop into the water may have damaged the sleep/power button as well. There may be third party companies that can repair the button itself, however, you may want to read my post regarding liquid damage in this thread before you consider having the iPhone repaired by another party:

Purchasing a new iPhone may be your best option in the long run,

  • Unable to Connect to WiFi after iPhone power off; WiFi & internet are working with MBP; common problem, no solutions?

Here's my setup: Internet <> Comcast/xFinity supplied cable modem <> new Apple Time Capsule <> iPhone 4 & MacBook Pro (see below for hardware details)
Internet on my iPhone 4 has been acting slow since yesterday evening. My MacBook Pro was running fine, but just to be sure I checked the Comcast website to see that I have only used 50GB of my allotted 250 GB of data for the month, so it's not that.
I decided it must be a problem with just my iPhone, so I opened up the multitasking bar and quit everything in there manually, and then I held the on/off button, and slid the slider to power off. When I started back up, I could not connect to the same WiFi I had just been using. I tried to reconnect and nothing. I tried to forget the network and try again, nothing. I tried to reset all network settings, nothing.
I have tried all the steps listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398 "iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections"
Toggled WiFi off and back on
Made sure I am in range of the router (it's about 8 feet away and my iPhone reports full signal from the network)
Made sure all the hardware is connected and on
Checked other devices (I'm successfully connected with my MacBook Pro right now)
Checked for router firmware upgrades (I have a new Time Capsule from Apple with the current 7.5.2 firmware which I've been using for a month)
    Restarted my device (again)
Checked that the network is available (it does show on my iPhone)
    Restarted my Time Capsule
Checked my router configuration as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3727 "Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network" which involves simply checking to see that WMM is turned on, also stating that WMM cannot be enabled or disabled for Apple's AirPort products.
    Reset my network settings (again)
I have searched and searched for fixes to this problem, and I have additionally tried:
    Enabling/disabling Airplane Mode
Disabling any network password protection/encryption (no luck), re-enabling it (no luck)
    Changing the network password
Checking for hardware addresses present in iOS Settings > General > About (they are present and not zero'ed out)
Switching Bluetooth off (nothing) and back on (nothing)
....and probably a few other things I can't think of right now
    I have yet to try:
The "Freezer Trick" which apparently involves chilling the iPhone to get a temporary fix?
Restoring the iPhone (I would really rather not)
A different WiFi network (other than my own Time Capsule home network or guest network, both of which give the same Unable to Connect error)
So, after all of that, are there any more ideas? Is there a reliable solution to this issue? So far I've just seen a lot of "mess with the settings," "the freezer trick worked," and "blame it on the iOS 4 update."
    Here are my hardware details:
    iPhone 4; iOS 5; 32GB; AT&T; no cellular data plan (July 2011)
    TimeCapsule6,113; Firmware 7.5.2; 2TB (September 2011)
    MacBook Pro 3,1; Mac OS X (10.7.2); 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; Hi-Res Display; 4GB RAM; 500GB HD (August 2007)
    ...and the Time Capsule config:
    http://cl.ly/BCUt

Ugh. Apparently "messing with it" is still the answer. I decided to try the LinkSys router I was using before I bought the Time Capsule, and my iPhone connected with no problem.
I went through the steps again, and after rebooting my Time Capsule this time, I can connect again. The troubling thing it that this started with a power-off of my iPhone. No changes or installations, just a reset. Am I going to have to reboot my Time Capsule (which has no power switch, just a cord I have to unplug) every time I reboot my iPhone?
