Possible iPhone compromise?

Short version:
My iPhone 4s running iOS 7.0.3 is uploading massive amounts of data to AWS (the Amazon cloud) whenever it is plugged into a charger and idle.  It's doing it so vigorously that it's capitalizing 100% of my internet connection's upload capacity.  (I have a firewall which allows me to monitor traffic.)
I placed a bandwidth cap on the iPhone's IP address, and it has allowed other users on my network to be able to work once again.
The moment I unlock the phone, the upload ceases.  All the traffic is headed to IP addresses owned by the Amazon cloud, and all of it is over port 443.  If I leave the phone plugged in for a few minutes with the screen locked, the upload resumes.
Is there a way on the phone to determine which process is performing all this network traffic somehow?  I'm concerned that the phone may have been compromised, espeically given that my firewall has also detected a malformed TCP packet attack originating from my iPhone.   I've downloaded a utility which allows me to see individual processes, but it doesn't show me their network or CPU behavior.  Plus, the settings area of the phone only shows app-based network statistics for cellular data, not wifi.
Has anyone else seen this behavior before?  Does anyone know of any apps which might try to slam networks with upload data to the Amazon cloud?  I'm scratching my head here bigtime.  My phone is not jailbroken.

Sorry. I misread that.
The behavior you're describing sounds like it may be tying to perform an iCloud backup. Especially if most of the traffic is outbound.
If that's the case, you may want to turn off iCloud backups for the time being and back it up to your computer using iTunes instead. See if that solves the problem.

  • Suggestion for a possible iphone with slide out keyboard.

I dont really know if there is a suggestion forum but i thought it would be neat if apple designed a iphone with a physical keyboard for those people who love to text. Apple could even run a internet pole to see what there customers would think i mean the iphone is top notch but i think having one with a slide out keyboard could possibly increase apples sales. Any who just thought id throw that out there and keep up the great work Apple.

This is where you need to go with your suggestion: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
I would not hold my breath.

  • HT1212 Possible iPhone Hack.

Hello, my sister thinks her black iPhone 4S has been hacked. She origianlly had a 7 digit passcode on the lock screen, and while it was in her hand the phone went black and automatically turned into a 4 digit passcode for the lock screen. She is quite worried. We would like to know how to get into the iPhone without having to wipe the entire phone blank. Please get back to us as soon as possible. Thank you.
P.S. The iPhone is also with Virgin mobile.

READ the article from which the question was posted.  It clearly details how to deal with the situation.
    Passcodes do not magically change.
Unless the iPhone has been jailbroken it cannot be hacked.

  • I received a text regarding visa check card deactivation.  Obviously some scam, but is the info on my iPhone compromised?  How can I protect it from bots/trojens/etc?

I received a text on my IPhone 5C that is obviously malware, erased it, powered off iPhone, installed IOS 8.1.3.  Has information on my IPhone been compromised? What should I do to protect the information and rid it of any loaded malware? Message was a "Seaboard Federal Credit Union Alert" that my Visa check card had been deactivated, with an 1-801-209-1388 call back number.

Nothing to worry about. There is no malware that can infect an iPhone. Nothing has been compromised unless you clicked on a link in the email and entered personal information.

  • IPhone 2 & possibly iPhone 3?

I's seen a few post around the forums about speculations around the launch of an 2nd iPhone and even iPhone 3rd Generation (which I think is a bit far fetched).
Does anyone think that Apple are starting to launch or update products very rapidly? like the iPod Nano 2nd Generation only lasted 1 year? roughly. I bought my MacBook Pro intel Core Duo not too long after the launch of the intel Mac's, and was disheartened to find out that there was a Core 2 Duo not too long after I got mine! and also prices dropped considerably and I could have got the 17" for the price I Paid with Core 2 Duo also. I'm not complaining, but it looks like Apple are launching so many products and new versions to overtake the likes of Windows based Laptops/PC's or Sony/Zen MP3 players.
Suppose it's the way things are going, you need to update technology to stay ahead in the game, and also I think Apple are at a crucial period where they could and can bring the majority of the public to use their products as opposed to Windows based PC's or any other product.
So back to the question, I don't think they could be possibly be launching a new designed iPhone because of the 'still' possibilities that can be achieved in the current one. No? how could they improve it considering updates may fix 90% of the current problems?

    Hi dherron!
Technology will always be improving and in the process will make "better" products cheaper or equal to their predecessors. That's inevitable of how technology, especially in the CPU market has always worked and will continue to work.
When you look at a product offering lineup like Apple's it's fairly finite. They have 2 portable lines (6 offerings) and 3 desktop lines (7 offerings). They also only market one generation at a time, so there's never any confusion when buying the product off the Apple Store (online) or in the Apple Store (retail). It is the latest and greatest, from Apple, and of course that might all change the next day.
I have no doubt that Apple will continue to redefine the cell phone market with their iPhone, they already have it's a 1st generation product.

  • Possible iPhone patch needed?

Re: Automated phone systems and canceling Caller ID.
    This is the sequence.
First entered * 67 (cancels caller id)
Next entered toll free 800 number.
Automated voice prompt system clicks in on the phone line.
Recorded menu Prompts to enter 1 for "english"
Pressed the keyboard button on the display to rotate numbers forward to dial.
Screen would not "flip" to reveal the keys to press. Pressing button had no result.
    Had to hang up.
Try it and see if you can duplicate.

Dialing *67 before any phone number you dial will block your phone number from who you are calling.
Unfortunately you need to do that every time you dial a number if your are trying to block your number. From the iPhone the person called will see the word "PRIVATE".
From a regular desk phone, the person called sees the word "BLOCKED".
I personally like the use of "PRIVATE"
If you want your number permanently blocked you need to call AT&T for the iPhone and they will remove your name from the data transmitted.
I had my first name changed from what was being transmitted but I did not block a name from being transmitted.
It may take several hours to accomplish after the AT&T CSR makes the change because doing this requires that a nationwide data base be changed.

  • Possible iPhone bug with custom recurring day schedule?  Need help.

In Microsoft Outlook I have a 64 day schedule that is set up as single all day recurring events each day. Each day of the 64 day schedule recurrs every 64 days. Day 1 recurrs every 64 days, day 2 recurrs every 64 days, etc., etc.
When I synced this to an iPhone, each day had an incorrect custom recurring day set at every 18 days. This, of course threw off the whole schedule. After doing some testing, I found out that a custom recurr of 45 days worked, a custom recurr of 46 days told the iPhone it recurred every 1 day. 47 day recurr did the same thing. 48 day recurr told the iPhone it recurred every 2 days, 49 day recurr became 3 days, 50 became 4 days, 51 became 5 days...64 became 18 days.
Is this indeed a bug with iPhone or is there something I can do for a single 1 day event recurr every 64 days? And, why is there no custom setting when setting up an event on the iPhone?

Apparently, no one has a solution for you. It may be a bona fide bug. You can let Apple know about that:

  • Possible iPhone Battery Leak?

Last night when I got home I plugged my iPhone into the charger cable and noticed that there was some resistance and the connector was a bit crooked.
I looked inside the connector area on the phone and there was a yellowish deposit on one side of the connector. My iPhone has definitely not been in contact with any food or anything else, and from the location it appeared that this deposit leaked from inside the phone.
So, it appears that this may be a battery leak. I'm traveling at the moment, so I don't have access to an Apple store, but when I get back I will take my iPhone into the genius bar and see what they think.
I carefully cleaned out the deposit with a paper clip; it was a powdery residue. The iPhone is working normally and no further deposit has appeared, but I'm wondering whether it is safe to use the phone until I can have it looked at.
Does this sound like a battery leak to any iPhone experts out there?
    Thanks,
    Jack

You'd be surprised what falls into one's shirt or pants pockets on a daily basis. Everything from corn muffin crumbs to pocket lint.
The current generation of lithium polymer batteries are unlikly to leak, and if you look at the autopsy photos of an iPhone, you'd have quite a mess inside before it could every corrode its way to the connector.
And i wouldn't use a paper clip - you could damage the pins or short something out!

  • Possible iphone 5 power shortage

When I go to charge my iPhone five it continuously connects and disconnects from the charger (on its own) and when I plugged it into my MacBook it will not allow it, saying that the USB is using too much power. Any ideas what is going on?

    WiseUser wrote:
This is a defect on iPhone 5 power button that wears out in about 13-14 months of usage just after you go out of warranty. Apple is aware of this issue but chooses not to accept this as a defect. I asked the Genius bar guy and they told me this is a common case recently and costs $269 to replace your phone. There is no repair option. I am very mad and believe Apple needs to take action or will lose their customers. All iPhone 5 owners that I know started having this problem in the month of 13 -14.
I believe if the numbers go high, Apple may start a recall program. Please encourage anyone with this problem to post here. $700 phone should not wear out this soon. Apparently the part is defective on almost all iPhone 5 devices.

WTH? Seriously?!?! Same issue here: Purchased iPhone 5 in Sep 2012. Power button went wonky shortly after recent iOS 7.0.4 install. Figured power button issue was a software bug. Been a loyal Apple customer (2009 Mac Pro, and several iPhones) since 2009. I will be looking elsewhere - at DIY water-cooled PC/Linux, and Android phablets - come August 2014. • Possible iPhone bug:

    Hi All,
When I connect my iPhone 3G to the standard $29.00 dock, with the audio out on the back of the dock connected to computer's input, all sounds played on my iPhone play on my computer's audio just fine, it's iPod, dialing pad, ringer, actual phone calls, etc., except for voicemail, that won't work through the dock. "Speaker" is the only option for audio output when listening to voicemail (visual voicemail), and neither Speaker on nor off routes the audio through my dock's audio out. It works when I plug into the headphone jack on the iPhone, but not on the dock - is this a bug, oversight, or maybe setting I've missed?
    Love to hear your thoughts.
    -Adam

Haha, turns out I was right the first time, it was only $29, I looked at the $49 version and it definitely looked a little different, mine looks exactly like the one for $29, this is the link:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB484G/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOQ&mco=MjE0NjMxOA
It says "iPhone 3G Dock" - I'm sure that's what I've got, I bought it from an Apple store, I asked an employee for a dock specifically for my iPhone 3G. Sorry about the confusion.

  • POSSIBLE IPHONE FIRMWARE 3.1 LOCKUP FIX

Turn off the 3G network on your iphone. Goto setting - general - network. Your phone will only use the EDGE network. Since I have done this my iphone has not locked up or needed to be turned off and on! I 'll let you know if this continues to be the case. I am still waiting for a new firmware fix!

Well, since my initial problems turning off 3G network and having the phone crash....it seems to have stabilized (at least for now). I haven't had a 'coma' episode for over 14hrs.
Regardless, this is obviously still a problem and Apple needs to either provide a 'downgrade' to 3.0 or FIX 3.1. I don't want to operate in the Edge network.
Helllooooo Apple??? How about a fix or at least acknowledge you've got a problem!

  • Possible iPhone 5 battery problem?

Recently my iPhone 5 (which is less than six months old) has started having problems. When I plug it in to charge (via the iPhone 5 cord into a wall charger) the plug symbol appears on the battery rather than the lightning bolt charge symbol, and the percentage remains at a fixed percentage no matter how long I charge it for. When I unplug the phone the percentage may read, for example, 37%, within half an hour that may change to 83% and minutes later it will read 2%. Also, the screen has once turned blue with black stripes, a fully blue screen for about half an hour, and once when composing a message, white and black stripes. My phone will also repeatedly turn on and off. Is this a problem that can be isolated to the battery? Is it a more extensive hardware problem? My phone has not been dropped or wet or had anything physically untoward happen to it.

Could be. Try getting a new battery. Or taking it to the Apple Store and having them check it out.

  • Possible iPhone user

    Hi all
Have to get a new phone and I'm seriously considering an iPhone (haven't decided G or GS yet). I currently have an HTC Touch and at first was looking at getting another WM phone but finding something I like is turning into a mission. My wife has had her iPhone 3G for a while now and I have always liked the ease of use and the "plain" simplistic and solid styling. My worry about going this way is that the rest of my life is run by Windows.
So here are my concerns ...
    1. Office documents (xls, doc etc.), can you view, edit or create them?
    2. Sync capabilities like contacts, favourites, notes and selected files? (I use Opera for mail and browser which I can sync with Operamini on my phone via Opera Link)
    3. GPS, I don't like the idea of having to use Google maps as I don't use 3G or WiFi and it seems "wasteful" to have to keep downloading maps. Do you get proper GPS software?
    4. 3G vs 3GS, can you really notice the difference between the 2. From what I understand, with the new software update on the 3G most of the new features are already available. So it's down to a slightly faster CPU and a slightly better camera and more memory (which I probably won't use)?
One of the things I told myself I wanted in a new phone was a physical keyboard, but I must say, with the iPhone's easy to use on screen keyboard, that can be forgiven
Oh yes, just to make things interesting ...
    5. What phone would you get if the iPhone did not exist?
    Thanks.

Tamara gave some good info, here is my perspective:
    1. Yes, but there are limitations. DocsToGo has one product, but the XLS edit feature is still coming soon. Other products don't do Powerpoint. Also, because the iPhone makes most apps run in a sandbox, these offices apps are not as fully integrated as one would like. It is a lot to go into here, but if you use Exchange, you have to use the office app to get the attachment - the office app can't see the doc that is in the iphone built in email app.
    2. Sync works well, but like other phones is limited to what the manufacturer allows. Exchange and Outlook sync with Notes, contacts, calendar. Bookmarks sync with Safari and IE - I am a Firefox user, so no bookmark sync for me. If you are a mac user, then Notes, Contacts, Cal sync with native OS X apps.
    3. There are 3rd party GPS apps - they store Gigabytes of data on your phone. I find that downloading maps for GPS works well for just about anything i do. In the US, a data plan is required, so using 3G is not wasteful for GPS.
    4. My friend has a 3GS - the speed difference is noticeable - it is faster then my 3G. But I am not pining away for one - I can get one in December for the new contract price, but i see no reason too. Voice dial, video, compass are the new features and none will make me by a 3GS when my 3G works fine.
    5. I am spoiled on the full screen form factor, so it would have to be something similar. I must have Exchange sync available so i would opt for some android variety. The new Moto Cliq looks interesting. Also, something that is not as locked down. I had WinMo smartphones in the past and I could install any app and customize the background and menus however i wanted.
If an Android phone has good battery and lets me customize and sync with Exchange and has a good browser, that would pull me away from an iPhone.
