Possible Linux/CS4 Incompatibilities

We are running a Linux server and I have recently upgraded to a Nehalem Mac running Leopard 10.5.6. I also upgraded to Illustrator CS4 and since these upgrades I have been getting on-and-off error messages:
1. When I double-click a file on our server, I occasionally get:
'Can't open the illustration. The file is locked or in use. ID = -54"
When I double-click the file again, it opens fine.
2. When I am in CS4 and saving files to the server I sometimes get either:
'This file has been modified outside Illustrator. Do you want to continue?'
or
'Can't save preview, but all other information was saved successfully. The file ended unexpectedly. Try using a backup copy. ID = -39'
or a combination of both.
Sometimes I have to try saving 2 or 3 times before the file saves successfully.
Has anybody had similar experiences?
Thanks
Sean

As far as I know, Adobe has never supported working directly off a server, linux or otherwise. I have had no noticeable issues working off our 10.5 server though.
problem #1: Do your errors coincide with the finder preview being drawn? I know as far as ejecting volumes, building and displaying the finder preview counts as "in use."
problem #2: no idea.

  • Is this possible in CS4? Sharing video links?

    I have used CS4 for a while but nothing very complicated so not sure if this is even possible. What I want to do is build a DVD with several episodes all using the same intro & ending + have a play all button;
    Like this
    Start - Episode 1 - Ending
    Start - Episode 2 - Ending
    Start - Episode 3 - Ending
Where "start" and "ending" are all the same files, so it would be "start" end action to episode 1 and then end action to "ending" and so on for each episode but I am unsure how to do this as all of these would be using the same start\end files.
Also would it be possible then to have a menu option to select each episode individually or a "play all"  button that plays them in order?

Absolutely. You will want to do a separate Timeline for your 'chapters," and your Intro and your Outro. Then, do a Playlist to set the order that you wish. For just the various "chapters" (Timelines here), just link those Buttons to the desired Timeline.
Per your description, you'll do 4 Playlists:
1.) Intro + Chapter 1 + Outro (link back to Menu, or location of your choice)
2.) Intro + Chapter 2 + Outro (link back to Menu, or location of your choice)
3.) Intro + Chapter 3 + Outro (link back to Menu, or location of your choice)
4.) Intro + Chapter 1 + Chapter 2 + Chapter 3 + Outro (for Play All) then (link back to Menu, or location of your choice)
    Good luck,

  • Is that possible InDesign CS4

    Hi all,
Is that possible when export indesign cs4 files in word format (only export text, graphic) as it is as same in indesign cs4 page layout (page to page) in word document.
    thank you for any suggestion/script
    regard
    snegig

No. Careful reading of how the export to Word works should tell you that. You don't export pages, you export a single continuous story.
Besides, expecting the very same layout, page by page, is extremely optimistic at any rate. InDesign's formatting is a lot different from that of Word.

  • Wacom Mouse and CS4 Incompatibilities

    Hi all,
I'm a CS3 user, but just downloaded CS4 for trial.  Unfortunately based on my experience so far it's unuseable.  The problem is that Clone, Healing, Brush tools do not respond to my Wacom Mouse (I can move brushes around, but can not apply any corrections).  If I use the Wacom pen, it works fine.  I've seen a few posting on the Internet from others with the same problem, but can't see any solutions identified.
I have Vista Ultimate 64, Intuos Tablet/Pen/Mouse, 8GB Memory and latest tablet drivers.  Help/advise would be appreciated.

John Joslin > Thanks for the suggestion, but I was already aware that I could Google and as I stated in the OP I did so without success!!!
Anthony.Ralph > I think it has a lot do do with what you suggest.  If I turn off pen-pressure control for shape dynamics the problem seems to go away - however that obviously defeats the object of pressure-sensitive pens so is not an ideal solution.  I experiented a little further and found that if I set a non-zero value for minimum size, when the brush 'stops working' with the mouse, it does not stop altogether, but instead outputs the minimum size brush.
So based on what I've seen so far, the problem appears to be when using the mouse, brushes work fine for a brief period of time after which the mouse behaves like a pen with very light pressure.  If NO pressure-sensitive option is selected in the brush palette then the mouse works fine.  If a pressure-sensitive option is selected for brush size, the mouse will output minimum size.
I've also removed and reinstalled the latest Wacom divers and that didn't help.

  • Adobe CS4 Install freezes at "Preparing to Install..." on Vista

I am trying to install Adobe CS4 for the first time (it's not an upgrade) from DVD on Vista (all the latest updates are installed; Windows Update has nothing more to do). The Vista install is also pretty fresh, although I have installed a few things. The CS4 install starts and I get a "Preparing to Install..." message. But, that's it. It's stuck there indefinitely.
I have disable my antivirus software, tried to use AdobeSupportAdvisor (but it doesn't seem to be able to determine that an install has been attempted), and been working through everything on
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb404127&sliceId=1
to no avail. I get the same behavior no matter what I try.
Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

OK, I got it to install. I think what happened was really simple and stupid on my part, but I can't really say for sure because I didn't get any such info from the CS4 install program. I had an upgrade version and I was installing on a new computer. So, possibly the CS4 installer was looking for a previous version.
    Anyway, here's what I did:
    1. I noticed that in spite of the install not appearing to get anywhere, there were some CS4 components installed. I removed them via the usual Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs routine.
    2. Install CS3.
    3. Install CS4.
    Worked just fine.
    So, my only suggestions are:
    1. If you have an upgrade version, install the version from which you are upgrading first.
    2. If you had this install failure, it might help if you uninstall whatever got installed during the failed attempt(s).
Simple and obvious, I suppose, but it did get the install working.

  • CS4 Master Collection trial installation blocks CD installation

    Hi!
I'm  need someone to help me. Here is a description of what happened, when I installed the Creative Suite (CS4) trial and tried to install the full version:
    1) I installed the trial version of CS4 Master Collection from a CD because I didn't need the whole version (or so I thought at that point, I was stupid as seen later).
    2) The installation screen told me I was able to insert the activation key later if I wanted. My impression was that I can do the installation and then upgrade to the full version if I wish.
    3) I run through the installation smoothly. No errors occurred during the installation.
    4) I could use the trial for 30 days after which the version expired.
    5) Then I tried to upgrade to the full version using the CD activation key. Unfortunately, the key didn't work but rather showed a red cross and an error message popped up saying the activation key was "not valid".
    6) My friend told me I should remove the trial version and then reinstall from the CD. However, the same problem also occurred in some other computers, so I believe that's not the only cause of the problem.
    7) After spending some time on internet, I found the following blog dealing with the topic:
    http://sherylcanter.com/wordpress/2009/02/problems-removing-and-installing-adobe-cs4/
I read some of the messages posted in the blog. I started searching for the cleaning tool  mentioned in the blog, and finally found the tool from Adobe web:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
I would really appreciate if someone with similar experience would tell, whether this tool really works in the latest versions of Windows (Vista, 7 & 8, I have 7).
I would also appreciate any assistance on the topic.
I already tested removing the "cache"-file from /C:/Program FIles/Common FIles/Adobe/Adobe PMC/cache/.. My effort had no effect.
If I really need to install my system again, will I lose all the files on the computer I'm using? I don't want to believe  that. Probably I can store some of the most important files on an USB-memory and still be able to use the Suite when it's installed and the files returned to my computer? I surely need to backup the system on my PC and not the others that were connected to it (any additional backup would be a catastrophe )?
I'm sorry for all the stupid questions & stuff, but I'm trying to get my message as clear as possible.
CS4 is an expensive software, so I really need to get it work. Installing the Suite from a CD should be possible because anyone may have  a trial on his PC before buying the full version on CD. That's the purpose of the trial version, I see.
    Thank you for any help!

Thank you for a fast reply!
The problem is stated in the title of my previous message: I cannot install the full version because I installed the trial.
Formatted as a question: "How can I get the CD installed with the original serial number?"
You wrote: "And where did you actually buy your CS4 license? There's a lot of fakes out there..."
    >The license belongs to my employee. I'm totally sure that the version I'm trying to install is not a fake.
"Other than that you could simply have used a wrong region installer for your trial and the serial number ranges are not compatible"
    >Could you clarify that more. The Suite has worked perfectly before I installed the trial. The installer only asked me to accept the license agreement and to choose between the trial and the full install. I was not asked anything else.
"You lose yourself in lengthy descriptions without actualyl ever telling what the problem really is, what the exact text of the warnings/ error messages is, what exact system you are on and so on"
    >I admit my "question" was lenghty and somewhat messy. Here are some more details:
    Country: Finland
Operating system: Windows 7 (as mentioned earlier)
Computer: Fujitsu (all requirements of the Suite are fulfilled, as the trial worked well)
Exact error message: "The serial number you entered is not valid. Click OK to retry entering the serial number."
Situation: I installed the trial, waited 30 days, and the trial expired. After that I tried to insert the disk serial number.
Possible solutions: Removing the trial and installing from beginning.
Internet access: Was ON during the installation.
The program has installed correctly earlier. Even with the serial number put in the back side of the disk.
Right now I don't have the information of the place where the Suite was bought (probably the origin is not in Finland). I can find it out on Monday. Possibly it was bought used that would make tracking a bit difficult.
Please ask if anything is still unclear. I know more on Monday, so if you can specify what information is essential by then, I would appreciate, and come on Monday with the asked pieces of information.
    Hope this message clarified something.

  • Problem with opening cs4 document in cs5.5

I have quite a big document of a catalog, created in InDesign cs4. It contains many layers and different master pages. When I open this document in cs5.5 layers and master pages get completely confused and the document looks completely different. When I created the inx-file in cs4 and opened it in cs3 everything was alright. Does anybody know what the problem in cs5.5 could the problem? Am I doing sth wrong?

I've been looking at the file, and it is indeed a puzzlement.
There is some good news, however. I don't know why it is happening (perhaps a bug, and maybe John would like to take a look at this, too), but it looks like the Paper-filled rectangle from Hinweise layer on the right of Master Ee is being copied to the left half of the actual document spreads on random layers. The pages that seem to be blank are easy to spot in the Page panel (22, 24, 26 & 32) and you can simply Cmd-Shift click on the rectangles on those pages to override and your text and graphics will be revealed. I'm not immediately picking up any other problems scanning quickly through the pages. For a quick and dirty get it done solution, I think this will work, though I would use the .inx file rather than the .indd for the conversion in CS5.5.
I've looked through the file history, and it is long. This started out in 2007 in CS2 and has gone through updates in CS3 and CS4, and been recovered from crashes at least 4 times (which might have something to do with the strangeness). I also think there are a lot of extraneous unused frames on many of the pages. If it were my project, I'd probably clean it up as much as possible in CS4, even going as far as recreating the master pages in a new document and then going page by page and doing a copy/paste in place of all non-master objects into the new file if you don't want to spend the time to place everythign again from scratch, which in my opinion would be a better idea (I tried moving the pages to a new file, but that didn't make any difference in the CS5.5 conversion). You could also rebuild from Scratch in CS5.5.

  • Photoshop CS4 OPENGL Drawing problem with Photoshop CS4

Hello, I've had this problem since i installed photoshop cs4, and its finally getting on my nerves and i'm looking for a fix.
I am on Windows XP SP3, NVIDIA 8800GTS. The OPENGL Drawing in Photoshop CS4 works fine, but a lot of times, when i start photoshop, it'll say that OPENGL Drawing is disabled and i'll have to go in to preferences and re-endabe and restart photoshop again to get it working. Please help, it's really annoying

NVIDIA apparently does not update their drivers specifically to correct Photoshop CS4 incompatibilities. There release notes have never mentioned bugs or fixes relating to Photoshop.
Try setting the 3D settings to Performance (rather than Quality) in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

  • PSD Spot Color Channels in Illustrator CS4

    Hi all.
Screenprinter here. Trying to migrate my way into CS4. No such
    luck so far.
Way back in Illustrator CS2 I used to be able to place a PSD file with Spot Channels,
and have each channel show up as a separate object in Illustrator. This was incredibly
useful, nay, necessary for creating/laying out separations and adding vector work.
From what I've read and tried, this is no longer possible in CS4, which leaves me running two versions,
    which is no fun.
I suppose my question is, has anyone come up with a workaround for this, or does the newest
release support this type of operation? From reading the boards, I've found that I'm not nearly
the only person who needs this feature, and so would hope that there is an alternative to
    running CS2 still.
Us poor lowly screen printers get dumped on by nearly all Adobe products in terms of usability
(ever shoot the stock reg marks from photoshop?) give us this one feature!

In Illustrator CS2, the individual Spot Channels from Photoshop used to become Opacity masks when imported.
In Illustrator CS4, they are not converted to Opacity masks. Your spot colors are still there - look in the Swatches panel. There is a Spot channels image in the layers panel with 100% Multiply blend mode applied to it.
So it is not correct to say that it is no longer possible to bring spot channels from Photoshop into the Illustrator CS4. See the comparison snapshots below.
    Hope this helps.

  • Trying to blend 2 objects in Illustrator cs4

    Hello again,
I am trying to create a blend/gradient with a linked photo and a square object in my design, creating a seamless blend.  The way I am doing this is by selecting the topmost layer (in this case, an orange square), opening the transparency panel, double clicking on the right side of the image/item thumbnail to create a mask, choosing linear gradient, then using the rectangle tool to select the area i want the gradient to be in.  I hope that makes sense.  The gradient looks lovely, however where the end of my orange square is, there is an obvious line.  Is there a way to soften this so it blends seamlessly?  I've attached a small screenshot of this file as a jpg so you can see what my problem is.
    Thanks,
    Gwen

If you want the orange grad to blend better you need to make the grad from orange to transparent. This is only possible in CS4 which I assume you are working in since you didn't mention any other version. Once you make the grad with orange to transparent you will need to readjust the color stops to get the fade out you desire.

  • Possible to modify blocks of text as defined by Touch Up Text tool?

I have scanned a document and OCRed it. Using the Touch Up Text Tool, I can approach the text, but the text areas are not as defined by the tool. Is there a way to modify a block as defined? I.e. There is a heading over 2 columns of text. The OCR process defined this as one block of text.

Thank you very much for your input.
I'm trying to automate this process as much as possible because I don't want to have to crunch the data manually myself later on, instead just teach someone else how to do it.
The first search and replace action seems basic enough but regarding the second one I would have to manually assign that paragraph style to the line where the data would break because one can only assign character styles in nested styles, right?
Also I've heard that ID CS5 automatically creates new pages based on a template when you paste information inside the first page, is that so? That would be great because that way the person wouldn't have to manually create pages and link the contents throughout the document but instead simply open my template and paste the information within the first master page. That's not possible with CS4, is it?
    Thank you very much!

  • Possibility to assign a color profile in the color management tab for more video formats

Presently, in After Effects CS5, in the color management tab of the "Interpret Footage" dialog box the possibility to assign a color profile to footage is grayed out for many video formats.
Formats that allow to assign a color profile include Quicktime/JPEG2000, Quicktime/Motion JPEG A, Quicktime/Motion JPEG B, Quicktime/MPEG-4, Quicktime/Animation as well as various image sequences, like tiff-sequences. (Motion JPEG A,B and Quicktime/MPEG-4 are not very helpful in this context because they have a small color shift when reimported to After Effects.)
Formats that do not allow to assign a color profile include Quicktime/PhotoJPEG, Quicktime/H264, H264 main concept, DVCPRO HD 1080p30, F4V. (Here, H264 main concept has anyway the disadvantage that it has a color shift when reimported into After Effects.)
In After Effects CS4 it was possible to assign a color profile to Quicktime/H264, Quicktime/PhotoJPEG, DVCPRO HD 1080p30, but in CS5 this is no longer possible.
Those video formats that do not allow to assign a color profile automatically are interpreted as having the color profile HDTV (Rec. 709) Y'CbCr in case that the videos have 1920x1080 format; similar applies to PAL formats which get SDTV (Rec. 709) Y'CbCr color profile.
(I did not find anything of this automatic assignment to HDTV or SDTV color profile in the "interpretation rules.txt" file, therefore it must be written into the programme itself.)
With growing popularity of wide gamut monitors it becomes necessary to produce footage and other videos that have a color profile different from HDTV or sRGB. When such footage is reimported to After Effects it has the wrong color and the only workarounds are either to use (in After Effects) the effect "Color profile converter" which necessitates extra render time or to use somewhat unpopular formats, like JPEG2000 that has very large filesize.
Presently many footage is produced in Quicktime/PhotoJPEG and therefore it would be very desirable to allow to assign a color profile to such footage in the color management tab of the "Interpret Footage" dialog box.
Does anyone know why in AE CS5 the video formats Quicktime/PhotoJPEG and Quicktime/H264 do not allow to have an arbitrary color profile assigned (although it was possible in CS4), is it a bug, or does it have a deeper reason.
In this context I have a related question, often I read that Quicktime videos have a gamma tag. Does this mean that part of the color profile (the gamma value) is actually embedded/remembered, like you have it for images where the gamma is part the embedded color profile.
I use AE CS5 on Mac Pro 2009 with OS 10.6.7.
    Thanks,
    Volker

Thank you Rick for this interesting explanations and the links to articles.
In the past few days I performed a few tests in After Effects and it is interesting that you mention that cameras, like the Sony EX3, allow videos to have embedded color profiles. I am not working myself with cameras but either get footage from the internet or sometimes videos from our video department which produces videos with professional SONY cameras, usually I get them in a matrox mxf format.
As far as my test with After Effects show it is not possible to embed color profiles in the videos rendered with After Effects. Independent of the color profile in the working space and independent from the color profile in the output module I always get the same reaction if I reimport videos rendered by After Effects back to After Effects:
In AE CS5 videos made in the formats Quicktime/PhotoJPEG, Quicktime/H264, H264 main concept, DVCPRO HD 1080p30, F4V  are always interpreted as color profile SDTV/HDTV (Rec. 709) Y'CbCr (even if I made them in other color profiles, such as Adobe RGB, Photo RGB, sRGB); and there is no possibility to change this interpretation rule.
In contrast videos made in the formats Quicktime/JPEG2000, Quicktime/Motion JPEG A, Quicktime/Motion JPEG B, Quicktime/MPEG-4, Quicktime/Animation are always interpreted as sRGB (even if if I made them in other color profiles, such as Adobe RGB, Photo RGB, HDTV); only this time I can change the interpretation rule. Therefore if I know for example that if I had selected Photo RGB in the Output module I can change after the reimport the interpretation rule from sRGB to Photo RGB and only then I get again the original colors.
The only exceptions are picture sequences, such as tiff-sequences, where the original color profile is automatically selected in the interpretation of the footage.
Therefore, unfortunately for videos produced by After Effects your advice "If it says something like sRGB and you can change it, in most cases you shouldn't change it because the guess is probably right. If there is no color profile assigned then you should assume that is correct." is not so easy to be applied. You have to know how you did it originally in the Output module and hope that you can change it to the proper color profile, in case that the original color profile in the Output module was different from sRGB and HDTV/SDTV. But it is interesting to hear from you that with cameras there seem to be more possibilities.
For this reason it would be nice if in future versions of After Effects one could change the color profile in the the color management tab of the "Interpret Footage" dialog box also for formats such as Quicktime/PhotoJPEG, Quicktime/H264, H264 main concept, DVCPRO HD 1080p30, F4V.
Of course one can always circumvent shortcomings by using tiff-sequences, QT/jpeg2000, or QT/Animation as formats for storing, which is anyway better for lossless or nearly lossless storing, but the files are then too large and also cannot be played easily with a player.

  • Solaris 10: A linux-user's attempt

seeing as how Sun has released Solaris as open source now, I figured I would give it a shot. I like to think of myself as very open-minded and since I support linux because I tried it and found it to be better, there is no reason to not try other Operating Systems and continue to assess the pros/cons to each.
After downloading the 4 cds and burning all the ISO images, I began to reboot so I could see how the install goes. I have seen from my google searches that Solaris does not like to co-exist with linux on the same physical drive, so i have my /dev/hdb ready to go!
I had some questions about adding Solaris to my grub entry, but I can always worry about that later.
During the bootup process from the Solaris install cd, it just stops. It begins to boot off of the install cd, but then after stating "Running Configuration Assistant..." I have nothing at all.
It just hangs. I litterally get 5 seconds into the bootup before it stops.
Does anyone have any advice? Maybe I have a corrupt ISO? Something has to be wrong, because I know people have been able to install Solaris 10 x86
    System information:
    AMD 2600
256 MB DDR (2700) RAM (ya, i know...)
Integrated Lan (traditionally eth1), Sound, Video (but not used), usb, ect.
Linksys 10/100 Lan card (traditionally eth0)
    Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti 4200 (128mb)
    17" Monitor (traditionally at 1024x768)
    hda: 160gb [hda1: 70gb, hda3: 30gb, hda4: 1gb, hda5: 50gb]
    hdb: 80gb [hdb1: 70gb]
    hdc: +/- DVD RW
    hdd: DVD/CDRW
Wireless mouse/keyboard (wired set on hand incase solaris does not support)
    OS's: Fedora Core III (hda1), Win2k (hda3), Suse 9.1 (hda5)
anything else that you think might help?

Perhaps a little belated: two things.
    1) grub entry and disks: a "makeactive" and "chainloader +1" generally work well for booting the partition with solaris (x86) on it, as with *BSD.
Solaris 8 and 9 worked ok on the same disk as other systems but made the annoying demand that solaris should get the first dos partition on the disk. It would be nice if this is no longer necessary, but I'd guess it is...
    2) "seeing as how Sun has released Solaris as open source now,"
I'd be very happy if this were so, but the last I heard was that a few parts had been made open source, although there were statements that all would be in the end.
So, I don't see how the "open source" promise is going to make it more reasonable for you to try solaris x86 now than it would have been previously (unless it's the ethics of claimed intention rather than the practicality that interests you).
If you want to play with different systems than linux, try the BSDs (from which root Solaris came). FreeBSD has excellent hardware support and much less hurdle-filled installation than solaris, and has an easy system for adding any of hundreds of free software packages. Solaris x86 may be useful for ensuring uniformity with solaris on existing sparc architectures, but it just isn't as easy to get lots of recent free software installed for every day use; and much proprietary software that supports solaris supports only the sparc version (and possibly linux x86) so you don't get that either by using solaris x86.

  • Outline the artboard in CS4

Ive noticed that CS4 has gotten rid of a the create and release crop marks option. in CS3 if you had nothing selected and chose Object/Crop Area/ Make it would find the art board and make crop marks outside of it automatically. then selecting Object/Crop Area/ Release would give you a bounding box exactly the same size as the art board. this was vary useful when importing and eps into InDesign.
Is this no longer possible in CS4? i know i could just draw a box but i cant automate that for an action because it will draw the same size box no matter the szie of the art board.
is there a way to set up an action to automatically find the art board and draw a box around it?
    Thanks
    -e

We do (or did do) this constantly in our prepress department. .aI files import to their artboard dimensions, .eps files to the artwork dimensions. Clients
always send files with "crop marks" made using the crop area tool - those crops will not transfer into indesign when placed. Because of this i had written an action to remove them (crop area>remove) and then add "real" crop marks on a separate layer (effect>crop marks). That left the old bounding box on the artwork layer (beneath the crops layer) and could then be enlarged 105%+/- and used as a clipping mask - that way all of the files imported to their widest dimensions - the outside of the crop marks. Now this isn't possible.
It seem that now, simply saving an .ai file to .eps will include the default crop marks - however, is there a way to control the length of the crop marks?

  • Dreamweaver 8 coexisting with Dreamweaver CS4

Is it possible?   We have many pages that were built out using DW8 only plugins, and we need to keep them to preserve maintainability with those pages.  We also need to upgrade to CS4 for various reasons.  Is it possible for CS4 and DW8 to live on the same machine without issues?

I use MX2004 and CS4 on one machine (for the same reasons)., so it should be O/k.
