Possible LR CC Instability Fix - This worked for me...

For those who have upgraded to LR CC and are finding the software to be unstable, are getting gray boxes instead of pictures when filtering images or are finding LR CC is slowing down your computer to a crawl this worked for me....
1) Go to Pictures/Lightroom/  (or where you have designated your catalog files are stored)
Rename LR 5 .Irdata file and catalog as .old or any earlier version of LR-if there
Delete any catalogs and temporary files created by LR CC - yes if you have any work in those files it will be lost, this is the unfortunate trade off to have a working copy of LR CC
2) Run LR CC as administrator (I haven't tried running it normally, it may work), when if first starts a dialogue box will pop up stating the default catalog cannot be found and ask if you want to create a new one or try to find an existing one - create a new blank default catalog
That's it.  (Of course I found this after spending 90 minutes waiting for chat help and 2 hours with chat, and uninstalling both LR CC and PS CC2014 in hopes of fixing the issues I was having.)  I've been able to reprocess the images I was working on when I upgraded and converted the catalog...I don't know if this is an upgrade issue or if I did something wrong in the upgrade, but I had a frustrating 3 days of being unable to process a client's family pics and computer crashes.
Briefly, LR CC would start and open, no hangs or crashes on the splash screen, it would kind of work for a few minutes then the pictures would turn into gray boxes, then the software would just stop working, no error, nothing just unresponsive.  My laptop would slow to a crawl and I would be forced to restart and my laptop would have to be hard booted to be shut down.  If I left LR CC open and my screensaver would start and my laptop would sleep on "waking up" I would have nothing on the screen - no task bar or desktop icons - just a picture and a mouse that moved but did nothing else.
I hope this helps.
I wish you luck and virtual chocolate,
Nonnie

Thanks for this! I tried doing it a different way and completely ruined my sound all together to the point that there weren't even any audio outputs detected! Fortunately this fix got me back on track and it's working again.

Working battery needs to be in for the computer to function.

  • When spanning new tabs (firefox) my users are asked to re-authenticate with pages already signed into. Can you tell me how to fix this issue for firefox users?

With some research I found regedit setting called “TabProcGrowth” that allows tabs to span without re-authenticating with certain browsers. Can you tell me how to fix this issue for my Mozilla Firefox users? Our current version of Mozilla Firefox is: 24.5.0 (x86 en-US). This was first noticed with a product called Confluence that we use in our Tech Support area. Users are having to reenter their password every time they click on a new link in confluence. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Hi Bernie:
As long as you are accessing your internal server on http:// or https:// then I would expect the normal rules to apply. To see whether some external requests are being blocked, you might try using Firefox's Web Console, Network tab.
You can open the console in the lower part of a tab using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+k
    * "3-bar" menu button > Developer > Web Console
    * (menu bar) Tools menu > Web Developer > Web Console
Click "Network" on the top bar of the Web Console.
Then use the address bar or a bookmark to launch Confluence in the same tab. Each request made by Firefox should be displayed along with the result. You can click a row for more details.
When I look up "TabProcGrowth" it seems related to the Protected Mode feature of IE8 and newer, which is not (yet) applicable to Firefox. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/askie/archive/2009/03/09/opening-a-new-tab-may-launch-a-new-process-with-internet-explorer-8-0.aspx
However, if Confluence is heavily reliant on plugins such as Flash or Java, that could be a factor because plugins are run out-of-process in Firefox. In that case I suggest checking with Confluence for suggestions.

  • IPhoto fix that worked for me (Coregraphics & Adobe Color Profiles issues)

Ok, I posted a few days back in reference to getting help with my iPhoto. I do apologize on the fact this is quite the long post but maybe it will be easy to understand for those who are like me and not all that computer literate. I searched all the discussions and used all the different advice from different people but had no luck. I was able to FINALLY get iPhoto up and running again last night after doing just a few simple things. Please note that this may not work for everyone. Also please note that I AM NOT an expert in dealing with computers and working with computers. It's just that my ADD kicks in when something needs fixing and I won't stop till its finished. Below are a few lines from the crash report that I was getting each time I attempted to open iPhoto from my Macbook Pro Late 2011 running 10.8.3.

-Run and attempt to repair any Color Profiles that may need to be fixed. There were 4 that could not be fixed for me. Locate these profiles and move them to your desktop (Note: I was still able to open and use all applications in my Adobe CS6 Master Collection after moving these profiles but you may want to check just to be sure if you are using Adobe).
-Even though I had done this many times, run the Disk Utility App in your Utilities Profile and Verify and Repair any permission needed (For me, I had none at this time that needed to be repaired).
-Next, I did an Apple Hardware Test. For me and the model Macbook Pro I am using, I had to restart my computer and when the screen went black for me at restart about the time the start up sound is about to come on, I pressed ALT-D. On some models you just have to press D. I did disconnect everything prior to doing this except the power cord and the Internet. I did a full AHT test that took about an hour or so. If you get an error code, be sure and right it down whereas your issue may be something different than mine and this will not apply to you. There were no problems from the test and then restarted the computer.
-At restart I decided to get into the OS X Recovery by pressing Command-R to either start from scratch or find some other way to fix the issue because I was tired of racking my brain on this and was about to throw the computer in to the wall.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 For help or questions on the OS X Recovery Process
-Once in the OS X Recovery from the Mac OS X Utilities Pane, I selected reinstall and then I selected my current Hard Drive. Luckily by doing this (not that I was aware or anything, but none of my files or folders were deleted and it only reinstalled Mountain Lion and whatever else it needed)
-This process took about an hour and once finished, I restarted my computer
-I logged back in to my account but did not attempt iPhoto at this time. Instead I immediately checked to make sure that 10.8.3 was what was reinstalled back on my Mac. I then checked for Software Updates which I had a few and installed these updates.
-I then went back to the Disk Utilities App from my Utilities folder and Verified the Disk and Disk Permission. To my surprise, many of the files that were in the iPhoto crash thread (posted above) were now showing up as needing to be repaired. I repaired what needed to be repaired.
-I verified all my Color Profiles to make sure none were showing up again (which there were none that needed to be repaired)
-I did a check check of some Adobe CS6 Apps just to verify they were opening and working correctly
-I restarted my Mac (Once again) and logged back in. I opened up iPhoto and everything worked and is working PERFECTLY. I then re-connected my printers and my Time Machine and performed a back up before importing photos back in to iPhoto. I DO WISH NOW THOUGH THAT I HADN'T DELETED AND RE-INSTALLED IPHOTO but it is nice being able to start over and organize iPhoto a little better than before.
I am sorry this is such a long post but for people like me who are not professionals in the computer department, sometimes it's good to "dumb" things done so that us "average joes" can understand a little better. Hopefully this will work for those who are having issues like mine. Thanks for all the help from everyone from my previous posts.

    Tom:
To help prevent loss like you experienced see the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • After Lion install, Mac won't sleep (no pulsing sleep light)? This worked for me!

I know there are a plethora of suggestions out there as to how to correct the no sleep light issue since installing Lion. I tried every single one of them-- PRAM and SMC resets, looking for "little snitch" and other apps, and even trashing a preferences folder. None of them worked for me.
This is what did work. APPLE! Listen up!
    1. Unplug the magsafe power cord from the computer now or in step 3.
    2. Close lid to laptop.
    3. Unplug magsafe power cord.
    4. Wait a few seconds.
    5. Watch as the sleep light begins to pulsate.
    6. You can now reattach the magsafe power cord, if you'd like. It doesn't affect sleep mode for me.
After doing this, I open the lid to my MacBook and it's like old times. It takes the display a second or two to come on as it wakes from sleep. It's exactly how it should be.
I hope this helps for most if not all of you, and I hope that Apple quickly determines how to fix this problem with Lion.

Yup, pmset -g assertions will let you know what's preventing your computer from sleeping.
As for AC vs battery, there are 3 profiles for sleep conditions - AC, battery, UPS. Use the "man pmset" command to see more details. Depending on which profile is active, different conditions may or may not prevent system sleep.
I also made a small app to help with diagnosing the problem, if anyone is interested. Source code is provided. If you don't trust it, just use "pmset -g assertions".
    Hope Apple fixes it soon.

  • Re: Mifi and Charging - does this work for charging the iPad?

I found the following post on here - but it is too old for me to reply directly to it - however, this was a very good post and it worked for me and I would really like to get in touch with mikebob to see if the same thing would work for charging the iPad - his ideas really work. And does he or anyone know how to charge the iPad from batteries?
    thanks a lot

I finally managed to figure out the proper cabling to get the Verizon Mifi 2200 to charge using a generic USB charger. To recap the problem... The mifi device will only charge when using the supplied micro usb charger, or when connected to a computer USB port using the supplied micro USB cable. When connected to a computer, the device reverts to it's connected data mode, which turns off the wifi ssid broadcast and requires the Verizon access manager application to be launched. Most third party chargers will not work... including most 12V lighter to USB adapters, and most backup battery solutions.
Here is what is going on... Per the USB specification, Pins 1 and 4 are 5V power and ground respectively. Pins 2 and 3 are data+ and data-. In most chargers, pins two and three are tied via a pullup resistor to the 5V line. If you measure the voltage on 2 and 3 you will see around 3V, equivalent to a logic high state. This has something to do with allowing the device being charged to identify whether it should be in a fast or slow charging mode. More importantly, it is what the Apple iPod expects to see . So, anyone wanting to build generic USB chargers will probably implement this way in order to tap into the single largest device market around. Unfortunately, the mifi does not like the logic high on pins 2 and 3. I haven't yet sorted out why, but when it sees logic high on pins two and three, it refuses to go into charging mode.
The solution is to use a cable where pins 1 and 4 (5V and GND) are carried straight through. Pins 2 and 3 need to be disconnected from the charging source and shorted together at the Mifi end. If this was a miniUSB instead of a microUSB, it would be what is called a "charge only" cable. I have not found any vendors yet for a charge only microUSB cable so I went ahead and performed surgery on a standard microUSB cable. I took a standard USB cable, cut it and then connected it to a microUSB connector from an old Motorola bluetooth headset charger.   Interestingly, the microUSB connector from the Moto charger  already has pins 2 and 3 shorted together internally so all I had to do was connect 5V and ground and heat shrink tube the whole thing. With this cable I can charge the mifi from any generic USB port, including those on 12V lighter adapters, and rechargeable backup batteries. In addition, I can also connect the Mifi to my laptop to charge while continuing to access the Mifi via wifi.
Only word of caution...  You really need to connect the Mifi to your computer using the standard data cable on occasion, say once per month.  The reason is that it is only in this mode that you will receive notifications of S/W updates and/or the need to update your PRL. (preferred roaming list).

Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and “ Check for Updates “...
If an Update Appears Install it... if not... you are up to date for your particular Device...

  • Ipod not recognised in ITunes. My solution (try this - worked for me!)

Hello. i had IPOD 30GB vid for Xmas and have spent 3 days surfing through info trying to find out why itunes did not recognise it!
I could see it in my computer but not itunes. I tried everything - and I mean EVERYTHING. I reinstalled, rebooted, restored reset etc etc! We had 2 IPODs to install so we knew it couldnt be a total hardware failure as both were doing the same thing.
Sorry if this is too basic for the techie people but I needed these instructions!
My problem was that Ipod was recognised as the C drive. Im not sure why this caused such a huge problem but there was a simple solution.
Following installation of software (inc new version from website) open Itunes. If your IPOD is not showing up in Itunes, (be patient though - it sometimes takes a few minutes) please try this first!
Open MY COMPUTER and wait until IPOD is showing in there (again - it sometimes takes an inexplicable amount of time - but be patient)
    Click on START icon,
    Right click on MY COMPUTER,
    MANAGE,
    STORAGE
    right click DISK MANAGEMENT
    ALL TASKS
    CHANGE DRIVE LETTER AND PATHS
Now change the IPOD drive to a letter after L (I used Z for one of the IPOD and X for the other to be on the safe side!) You need to do this for EACH IPOD you want to plug in.
Now close this down - reboot your machine and start again.
Open Itunes and be patient. It sometimes takes the system up to 2 or 3 minutes to recognise the IPOD is connected.
    Good Luck!

I was experiencing the same issue and tried the standard install/re-install steps. I also played around a bit with the msconfig soultion but unfortunatley this didn't work for me.
On one of my other machines I just finished configuring a Shuffle for my kids. It required me to install a later IPod updater (iPod Updater 2005-11-17). You can find it at http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
This seemed to do the trick for me. Goodluck

  • THIS WORKED FOR ME AFTER WEEKS OF LOOKING...

OK, So here I was with my angry six year old daughter not
able to get on Disney`s Virtual Magic Kingdom because of the last
update I had done to shockwave. It had installed shockwave version
10.1.1.016??? Which totally screwed all three of my home sytstems
up. (2 pcs and 1 laptop) Anyways after reading all and trying
all... which hey the Mozilla Firefox download did work. I finally
got the bright idea of actually following Adobe`s directions and
updated my Internet Explorer on my daughters computer first running
ME. I updated it to Internet explorer 6.0 and re-installed
shockwave just to find out that guess what... they were right it
ran great the first install. I followed up with the other two
computers both running Windows XP Pro but still only installed
IE6.0 and everything is working great. Download IE6.0 right from
www.microsoft.com/ie There is also IE7.0 Beta but I chose to stick
with what worked for me! I hope this message helps some others out
there... if you haven`t tried it you got nothing to lose.
    Good Luck All !!!!! E.B.

Unfortunately, this isn't working for me. I sent an e-mail to Apple explaining the problem, basically my download of a music video was almost complete when I got an error and was told to try using the 'check for purchased music' function you used. Previously, this has worked fine, but for some reason the video is flagged as having been downloaded when it has not.
As I said, I sent an e-mail to Apple. I'll let you know if there's a change in the response to the 'check for purchased music' function or what Apple's response to my e-mail is. I'm sure they'll solve the problem for me. It's a minor inconvenience. Besides, this is after all a brand new and clearly already very popular service! I suspect their servers are somewhat overloaded...

Ah, thought I counted all those.  Whoops .  Yep that did the trick.  Thanks benob.
Edit: Just FYI to any that read this.  This script only checks if you are in the cap range, so it's not really a bandwidth tester for the command line.  The nearest I've found is 'iperf' which I'm unable to get to use yet.
Edit2 : netperf seems better suited for this, only been able to learn how to do download speed test so far:
    netperf -c hostname -f K

  • IWeb CPU usage, fix that worked for me

On my MacBook Pro having iWeb open and idling with my relatively simple site would cause my CPU usage to hover between 35% and 50%. Pretty disconcerting since I have a 2.66 i7 model and 8 gigs of RAM. Some pages on my blog have a decent amount of text and pictures and typing became a one letter at a time event since the program would just drag. Very annoying.
I did a lot of searching and finally found something today that worked for my situation. Since it took a bunch of time to locate a solution I figured I'd share it.
My problem ended up being a font issue. I opened up Font Book and saw several errors with duplicate fonts. Since there were a few I just did a select all and then selected resolve duplicates from the menu. To be safe I rebooted but that may not have been necessary.
Now iWeb idles between 5% and 10% which is much more reasonable. Not to mention now I can work on my site and have my battery last longer than an hour and a half!
Anyway, I hope this helps someone.

If doing so improved the situation, this confirms that one of Safari's database files has become corrupt and is causing the crashing, and this shows up in your crash log as Thread 3 having crashed.
The blacklists from Google’s Safe Browsing Initiative (where Safari checks for 'fraudulent websites') are contained in a database cache file called SafeBrowsing.db - the file was created when you first launched Safari 3.2, and if you have the browser open, the file is modified approximately every 30 minutes.
As an alternative to turning off 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website', which will lose you that important security feature, you should delete that database file, (but first close Safari):
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari (this is a folder)/SafeBrowsing.db
It will be recreated next time you open Safari, and will then start again collecting details of dodgy websites.
