Possible N97 solution (Screen freeze)

To start with, I have to admit I've never been an active member of these boards. Only when I got this phone back in August, shortly after release, did I turn here to see if someone else shared my problem.
The N97 I have now is actually my second, the original I bought completely froze up on me after about 2 days and I returned it directly to the store and tore them a new hole until they gave me a completely different phone (still boxed). Despite having some quite major issues, with the second phone, it has never completely frozen up on me but has at times been inoperable for extended periods. The main issues have all been related with the touch screen interface, but since everyone here shares these problems I'm not going to bore you with my tears and the details. To put it in short, I love the phone but was just about to file a full reclamation letter with the supplier and stop using Nokia for good. Until I fixed it by accident.
As I type this my phone has been operating 100% incident free for just about 2 weeks now. Strange enough it's all because I changed the screen protector from that which came packaged with the phone!!!
I'm still in disbelief that something as simple as this could correct one of the most irratating problems I have ever had with a piece of technology. The screen protector was purchased in a Finnish computer store called Verkkokauppa.com, I'll give the links here:
http://www.verkkokauppa.com/popups/prodinfo.php?id=31484
Google translation:
http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww...
At best I can tell, the screen protector I have placed now is just slightly thicker than that which came with the phone originally. Since I lack the engineering knowledge to explain how and why this could help, I can only suppose that it has something to do with the screen being activated by accident while in my pocket before, but now because of the thicker material this has stopped. I was aware before that the phone had it's lagging issues while either on the move of in contact with some materials, but all that is in the past!
I would love to hear some someone else to know if anyone this is actually a fix or if it's just fluk with mine right now. I made no software changes and I'm running the most upto date versions.

Happy it works for you, but I can't ever imagine that a screenprotector should be the cause of issues with the device...

  • Nokia N97 empty home screen freezes out of nothing

Last week my Nokia N97 type RM-505 was delivered, and I had to hard reset it three times since then. I have updated the firmware to V 11.0.021. The problem is as follows:
The home screen freezes totally out of the blue. All the widgets are on screen, but empty, including the selected profile and date next to the clock. The only thing that works is the clock itself. The contacts shortcut has disappeared as well.
By using the menu button I can still perform most tasks on the phone, the phone is much slower however and the battery runs out faster. Reinstalling the firmware or going back to factory settings have no effect at all. The phone has been in this state for up to six hours, either on or off (with the battery taken out).
The problems seems to occur at random, once when I turned it on in the morning, once when using it and twice while not using it but when the phone was turned on. I used a hard reset (*#7370#) the first two times and the third time after I used the *#7780# reset.
I was thinking of returning the phone, but the last time it returned to normal after typing in *#0000#. I couldn't make out however if this was the cause for the phone going back to normal or that it was just a coincidence.
At this moment my phone functions normally, but I am quite worried that it will freeze up again and I have to perform a hard reset again. I have read on a Dutch forum that somebody had exactly the same problem, so if there are more people here please report, hopefully with a permanent solution.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi...
I was having the exact same problem with an N97 I bought 5 days ago. It randomly froze and all I could see was the clock working. But an added problem I had was that my screen and keys were both locked so I couldn't even perform a hard reset. So basically my phone was frozen, all my widgets were blank and all the keys were locked. The screen unlock key wouldn't work either and opening the slider wouldn't unlock the keypad either. My phone doesn't have a warranty either so I was on the verge of being royally scr**ed.
Luckily after searching around for a few hours, I found these steps to get the keypad unlocked long enough to perform a hard reset:
    1. Take out the battery and reinsert after 1 minute.
    2. Connect the phone to a computer and let charging begin.
    3. Turn on the phone with the slider open.
    4. This is important: Do NOT let the screen lock. Press buttons, the keypad button on screen, anything.
    5. Hopefully once a few buttons are pressed the numeric keypad on screen should come up.
    6. Use *#7370# and default code 12345 to perform hard reset (or soft, depending on your choice)
    7. Phone is back in working condition.
However once I had performed all these steps and reinstalled my widgets and stuff, I woke up this morning to find my phone stuck again with the keypad locked. After reading this post I connected my phone to the computer to unlock the keypad and removed the email widget. After restarting my phone it seems to be working just fine. Hasn't gotten stuck or anything for a few hours now. Hopefully the problem won't resurface and I will be able to update to the new firmware and have this issue resolved once and for all. Will post updates if the problem happens again.
    Thanks for all the info!

  • Why any time if the iphone4 battery power is below 20% the screen freezes

why is that when theiphone 4s poweris below 20% the screen freezes off

sorry I can't help you with that, Marco...still haven't figured it out for myself - or had anyone suggest a possible solution. Hopefully, someone at Apple is reading these and will make changes to ML to solve this problem (and maybe the graphics dept. will be able to put back the login screen & screensavers to the way they were in SL )
good luck! and if you find a solution, please post it here. Thanks!

  • Screen freezes after login on Lion OS X (intermittent)

Ever since upgrading my MacBook Pro (purchased Apr-10) from Leopard to Lion I'm experiencing an intermittent problem where the screen freezes once a user has logged in. The problem only occurs when the machine is started from off and doesn't occur when starting from sleep or when switching users.
This problem affects all users set up on this machine and results in a cursor that can still be moved but can't select anything and a keyboard that is unresponsive. Most times the cursor shows as the coloured wheel. I have left the machine in this state for over 30 minutes to see if it would recover but it doesn't and I have no option other than to perform a hard reset by holding down the power button. Sometimes it can take a couple of hard resets before the machine recovers.
The configuration of my machine is fairly straight forward with an Apple Time Capsule providing backup and WiFi and minimal software installed.
I have found that disabling all 'Open At Login' apps reduces the likelihood of the problem but doesn't cure it.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and can provide a solution as I want to avoid having to revert to Leopard if possible.

Accelerated Video Drivers for the 5770 and 5870 first appeared in 10.6.5, so when running 10.6, be sure to update to at least that version before drawing conclusions.
Otherwise, I think your conclusions that this is a graphics card problem are likely correct. Over a very large sample, these cards have been much more reliable than many previous cards. But you do not have a very large sample, you have one card.
The Mac Pro (65lb tower) uses Error Correcting Code memory, so this is NOT a RAM memory problem or you would be getting kernel panics with machine check, uncorrected error.
Apple hardware test is a tool that only seems to detect the grossest of errors. It is famous for false negatives.

  • New 13 in. mac pro screen freeze

new macpro 13in. screen freeze. the cuser mover but the links remain frozen.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Nokia 900, screen freezes cannot reboot, etc and o...

    Hi
I am now on my 2nd 900. I bought one back on May 4th. Within a couple of weeks, the screen would freeze up.  You could still hear/use the voice command, but no matter how you tried, you could not reset (hard or soft) and the screen would just stay like that, time not changing, etc. for a couple of hours.
I went back to AT&T and it unfroze itself while I was there.  It was frozen for over 2 hours.  It did it again and again.  On June 10th, I spent over 2 hours on AT&T and then Nokia's tech support line (using another phone to call) they only suggested totally wiping it out and starting again, not what I'd consider a viable solution.
Last week, it did it one more time and I took it to a different AT&T store and they (for the first time) suggested I get it replaced and called tech support for me.  Despite massive documentation on how often the phone had frozen up and calls, emails, in persons, to tech support since I had gotten it, Nokia was only willing to send me a refurbished model (over 30 days, nobody suggested I return it before).  This time the phone was frozen for over 3 hours and when it came back up, it had lost all data for the past week (including a very important test result from the NIH).  Later that evening, all the texts and data reappeared.
The new to me phone arrived yesterday and since there is apparently no backup and restore option, I spent most of yesterday making it look like the one I was returning.  Today, this one locked up again, I went back to
AT&T who just shrugged.  It was frozen for 40 minutes.
The only consistency I can see is MOST of the freezes come after I've received a text message.  As I said, the phone will continue to 'talk' to me and take commands, but nothing works, none of the buttons, etc.
I have no idea what to do at this point, I totally have no faith in this phone or even Nokia at this point and I'm apparently 'stuck' with it for the 2 years of my contract.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if anyone knows where the underscore character on the keyboard is, that would be a nice feature (don't even get me going on the lack of apps, and no sound in PowerPoint)!!
    Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Today is Sept 21, 2013. My 15 month old Nokia 900 windows phone will not start. I really liked it.
Reading some of the threads I realize now that I was lucky to have it last this long.
The phone will not start, cycles through vibrate, black screen, white/lightblue screen, nokia screen, then Rethink possible AT&T screen where it stays or recycles around again. Sometimes I get the battery screen with low in the red. I tried all the recomended fixes that I could find here and at Nokia site. No luck.
My phone was fully charged yesterday morning before and was barely used yesterday.
Screen locked last night. Shut it down and then restarted and then the above mentioned problem and would not start.
All of these problems are document on this discussionand Nokia web site but no real solution.
Have tried most of the things suggested on the web site except the wipe out data reboot.
If I did that and it works I might as well get a new phone.
Not so easy to back up your data/info with the Nokia windows phone versus say the Samsung
    1. lost photos - luckily I do not use it that much
    2. lost videos - not that great
    3. music - can rebuild
    3. Lost apps - all free ones luckily
    4. Will have restore/rebuild address/phone book from my last save (unfortunately that was May) and many changes
    5. Lesson learned back everything up more often on a regular basis.
    6. Never used it for email - so that will not be a problem
But what a pain.  And I do not have a phone.
Will be calling Nokia on Monday - wish me luck. My expectations are very low.
Went to the AT&T store today. One gal tried to help but basically the same things I had tried.
Then the blame game. Nokia knew plenty of problems etc, newers models ie 920 are better, but if you check this web site plenty of the other models have these problems
I had a Blackberry for 5 years and it always worked even after much abuse. Even at the end when it crashed, I could remove the battery - hard reboot - and it always started and functioned again. Plus the Blackberry had great software to syncrcronize and/or save. But Blackberry did not keep up with the times.
Attraction of a smart phone was too great. Got the Nokia 900 - Nokia's attempt to catch up with the times. With so many reports of similarly painful problems, I will no longer be recommending the Nokia phones. Nokia will probably be going the way of Blackberry - downward. Too little too late and lots of problems. Shame as I liked the functionality of the phone and ability to have multiple things opened with AT&T network. Really not AT&T's fault that Nokia phone did not last.
But a real pain in the butt now. An body with any alternative solutions let me know.

  • N97 Touch Screen Problems

My N97 has intermittent touch screen problems where it will either respond in the wrong location, lag, or just be completely non-responsive. I'm pretty sure that it's not hardware as after completely rebuilding (remove all apps, format the mass memory, hard reset, re-install v2 fw, hard-reset, re-install apps, re-load mass memory) the phone and the touch screen work with no problems for several days, then after 3-4 days the problem reappears.
I suspect it's related to two problems with the phone: the first is that there is still a bug with the lock/unlock slider; the second is that the phone is too underpowered (CPU & RAM) to multi-task (especially email retrieval) and process the input of the touch screen.
Is anybody else having similar problems with their N97 touch screen, if so do you have a solution?
    Nokia N97 (RM-507) v 22
    iPhone 4 (Coming Soon) - Lemon N97 - SE - Nokia 8210 - Nokia 7710 - Nokia 5100

    @froschy:
My observations are 100% consistent with yours. The packet data end does solve the problem, but only if the screen is not 100% non-responsive. I can also confirm that the WiFi status has absolutely no effect on the problem.
There are also quite a bit of other possible causes that can be ruled out from the get-go:
    1. Insufficient RAM or CPU in general activity. I can rule this out as the phone works well even if I have 12 applications open at the same time. However, the issues happen sometimes even if nothing is running in the background. If this issue is related to memory leaks or similar bugs, it has nothing to do with the ones I normally run and has to be something in the background (like contacts, phone or messaging, clock, maybe others?) that is cuasing this.
Also, even when the screen is not responding correctly, I can still do stuff on the phone without lag. This is really weird but very true. I can do pretty much anything as long as I use the slide-keyboard instead of the touchscreen.
    2. The 3G network is not to blame. I live in Romania and I use Vodafone, which has 3.5G (3G+, HSDPA or whatever you want to call it) and is a very well established technology for these guys (they use it since 2005 I believe and have great coverage for it). The fact that you and me both have the same issues pretty much points to no influence on the provider or network type, IMO.
    3. The screen is not faulty. I hope. All pointers rule this out, but really, you never know in the end :-D
    4. The firmware version seems to be irrelevant up to this point. I have been having this problem since v11 and now I'm running v20. If this will be fixed in the future, I have no idea. However, if it gets fixed, we will know.
    =========
At this point I can also identify some key points about the phone usage which are common to both you and myself:
    1. We use the GPRS / 3G connection on a regular basis.
    2. We use the mobile email client to check email on a regular basis. For my part, I use MailForExchange and keep it in sync pretty much all day long. Though, at work, I use WiFi instead of GSM connection.
Maybe these two points are of importance. On the other hand, maybe there is something else that may be common to both our phones. I have an N97 RM-505, FW version  20.0.019.C01.01 (firmware is not really relevant anyway).
    Cheers,
    C.

  • IPhone 6 plus screen freezes intermittently - forced restart required

I'm on an iPhone 6 plus with 128gb running 8.1.2.
It seems that intermittently (recently mostly in iMessage; which hasn't been behaving since 8 & yosemite) my phone screen freezes.
By freeze, I mean it is visible. It will even paralax on the home screen so some CPU/GPU stuff is working, I can even click and double-click the home button, but touching the screen elicits no response what so ever.
Recently a new version of the problem has only started in iMessage where I am getting some results, but never anywhere close to the target I actually touch.
    Is this a known issue?
Is there a solution, that is known to work?
Is this a hardware problem or software problem?
I have removed all non-apple keyboards because it seemed to always start when I was typing someplace (regardless of keyboard used).
    Suggestions? Help!
    Thanx!
    -- Dave

I've been having similar issues with iOS 8.1.3 on my six plus. It will freeze exactly as you describe--home button works, parallax works, but touching the screen elicits no response. I can also double-press the home button to bring up multi-task view, and I can scroll through the open apps, but I can neither change to another app nor swipe apps up to close them. The freezing occurs most often within the Messages and Email apps, but I've had it happen in Safari, Settings, Calendar, etc. When it happens, its usually a second or two after I open one of the apps in question. Once it freezes, I have to press the lock button and then unlock it, and then everything works fine again for a period. Restarting the phone doesn't really help, as it will randomly freeze again when using one of the aforementioned apps. Apple support recommended I try backing up to iTunes and restoring the phone using the Set up as New option. It seems to have helped a little. Maybe its my imagination, but it doesn't seem to be freezing nearly as often or as long (knocks on wood). But it did not alleviate the problem entirely.

  • My screen freeze daily from nokia Lumia 920

The last days my screen freeze and then I always need put back the time

This used to happen on my 920. I traced the problem back to an app that behaved badly when its tile was pinned to the home screen.
What apps have you installed recently? If any over the past few days you might want to take a closer look at those in particular.
Also, have you received the Amber/GDR2 update yet? If not, make sure that settings -> date+time -> set automatically is off as that caused instability.
If none of this works you might have to go down the factory reset route. Make sure that everything of yours is backed up because this will wipe the phone absolutely clean.
Go into settings -> about, then scroll down and tap on "reset your phone".
The phone will restart and you'll see spinning gears on the screen. This should only last for a few minutes but has been known to drag on with some phones. If yours does get stuck there are a few things you can try:
    1) Press simultaneously on "Vol. down" and "power" for 15 seconds. This will cause the phone to reboot again, but possibly back to the spinning gears. Try this option a few times.
    2) If the previous option doesn't work then let the battery die. If you then plug a charger into the phone, it'll take about 10 minutes to wake up, but when it does it should be fine and start going through with its initialisation sequence.

  • Lumia 720 Screen Freezed

    Hi,
I am also facing the screen freezing issue, i have also tried the below solution for 5-6 times but still my phone screen is not working.....
Press and hold the Volume down and the Power button simultaneously for 10  seconds. After doing this my phone restarted but still screen is not working and unable to do anything on my phone.

I presume by freezing you mean the screen is not working at all. Do you think the phone is otherwise working but the display just isn't coming on? I think perhap it might be a hardware issue and you should get it checked out at your local Nokia care point.

  • Mountain lion screen freeze

Since I downloaded Mountain Lion OS 10.8, my screen freezes constantly.  I wish I had never downloaded this "upgrade."  Need solution ASAP becasue this puts me out of business.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
If you have an optical drive, make sure there is no disc in it.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or shutdown failure, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • N86 messaging screen freeze

    Hi,
Got this new from Nokia less then a week ago and wasn't texting much - more calling and getting use to Symbian. But the few txts I did do were fine. NOW whenever I text and use the space key, which is inevitable, the screen freezes completely. I have to take the battery out wait and then re-start. Wierdly it's not the first use of the space key that wil freeze it.
Love the phone in all other respects. Any ideas as to how to fix this?
