Possible OS bug causing everyone's heartache?

I read this interesting post on Macintouch today:
"[Neil Lee] Here's something strange - it seems there are at least two different builds of OS X 10.4.7 that are included with shipping Mac Pro machines.
We (Cocoatech) have been trying to track down an issue with Path Finder where it crashes on launch when run on the new Mac Pros. After reporting this to Apple they confirmed the issue and said it was due to a bug in the OS that they said they would fix in an OS update (the rumoured 10.4.8?). We've been waiting with bated breath to get our hands on a Mac Pro ourselves so we could do some of our own testing.
To our surprise, Path Finder ran with no problems on our Mac Pro (3GHz, 3GB RAM). After much troubleshooting to try to narrow down what the difference was between our machine and other Mac Pros that exhibited this issue we discovered the installed OS on our Mac Pro is a newer build.
Our customers that have been having this problem all seem to be running Mac OS X 10.4.7 build 8K1079. Our Mac Pro, which runs Path Finder just fine, is Mac OS X 10.4.7 build 8K1124.
I'd be interested to hear from other Mac Pro owners what OS X build their machine is running. To see the build number go under the Apple menu to "About This Mac". When the About This Mac window appears, click on the version number just under the Apple logo and it will change to show you the build number.
Obviously Apple caught this issue (albeit a little late) and has updated their factory OS X image. But how many machines out there got the old, "buggy" version?
[We wonder how many other products are getting hurt by this bug. Our first-day Mac Pro is running Build 8K1079, and Software Update is making no change in it. -MacInTouch]"
Note I checked and I have 8K1079, even after a resintall. I have problems with Parallels, even in 2GB mode, and Second Life, and in XCode's OpenGL Shader Builder application. They all crash, basically. Everything else works fine.

There was an even earlier build than the two mentioned.
Talk about "early revisions" I guess so, and it doesn't look like there will be a unified version tomorrow.
I recall AYM had a note about video performance and in that instance, the build on the DVD was never than what was on the hard drive and within a week or so disk drives carried the "new, improved" video on disk as well.
There may be other changes that go hand-in-hand other than build, too. Did they look at the Boot ROM and SMC Version of the systems?

  • Possible code bug causing crash on Wine/Linux

As I am running Linux, I don't expect support as such but thought I would offer a possible contribution to the beta program as follows:
When starting Safari under Wine (an implementation of the Win32 API) on Linux, I get the following debug message:
    DIB_GetBitmapInfo (44): unknown/wrong size for header
What I understand this to mean is that the Windows function GetBitmapInfo is being passed a dodgy parameter.
This is followed by a crash for me, but I guess on Windows, is quietly ignored.
I have seen a report on CodeProject regarding an identical crash caused by a coder setting the biSize member of the bmiHeader (BITMAPHEADERINFO) element of a BITMAPINFO structure to the incorrect size. In the example given, it had been set to sizeof(BITMAPINFO) rather than sizeof(BITMAPINFOHEADER)
    e.g.
    bmpInfo.bmiHeader.biSize = sizeof (BITMAPINFO);
    instead of
    bmpInfo.bmiHeader.biSize = sizeof (BITMAPINFOHEADER);
For any devs. interested as to whether there may be a bug, the call stack generated by Wine, showing the offsets from the base address of coregraphics.dll (loaded at 0x6b000000) is as follows, with the crash actaully occurring at '=> 1'
    Backtrace:
    =>1 0x6b262e97 in coregraphics (+0x262e97) (0x0033ed38)

As I say, I'm not expecting any feedback on this - I'm just being neighbourly I also fully accept that I may be completely wrong in my assessment of the issue.

  • Possible Stage3D bug causes flash content to not redraw?

    Hi all,
I am developing a mixed Stage3D application with flash content for the UI. It happens that since a certain flash version the flash content is not being redrawn/refreshed. For example, if I create a popup (or close it) the flash content is not refreshed until I move the mouse.
If I remove the Stage3D content from my App it works well.
It works well on chrome with flash 11,5,31,139 but it does not work on the latest flash version 11,5,502,146 on Firefox and IE.
Is it a bug? or I am missing anything?
    Best regards.

Could you give this a try with our recently released Flash Player 11.6?  If it still occurs, please open a new bug report on this issue over at bugbase.adobe.com.
Once the bug has been added, please post back with the bug URL or bug number so that others effected can add their comments and votes.  I'll also follow up internally.

  • IPhone bug causes 600mb download over 3G in 20 min?

    Hi everyone,
Just wanted to tell you my first experience with unintended data usage on my iPhone 3GS.
So on the 17th of March while in a class i noticed my iPhone was abnormally hot. Thought that was strange but not knowing the cause I waited to see if it would cool down. So 15 minutes later it was still hot and at the same time I noticed the battery was draining excessively quickly, from 70% to 25% in like 15 minutes. Not knowing what was happening i choose to shut down then restart with airplane mode activated so the battery would last for the rest of the day. Wasn't sure what happened until a few days later my account was updated showing data usage of 100% of my allocated iPhone data. The usage was on the same day that the above story occurred. As a result i was charged an excess fee of $60 on my account.
Now it could just be a coincidence that i some how downloaded 600mb at some other point on that day but that cant be the case as i don't download things that big ever. I don't tether it to a PC. I use a PC at home to do any data intensive stuff. I have bigpond cable at home which i connect to via wifi, which is the only time i update app's, with the device in my hand while its updating. I do not view movies or videos on my phone. The data usage was completely abnormal.
My iphone was locked while this was happening, isnt that meant to stop things like this? Isnt there restrictions on what apps can do while the phone is locked?
It was obviously a bug in an app or the iOS that caused it to continue to download junk that I didn't request or need. Is there any way to stop this?
I have looked in to apps like Dataman, are they a solution to problems like this?
When will Apple offer a solution to these kinds of problems?
I Can install software on my PC that would stop it from using excess data. At least allow us to restrict usage even slightly.
App's I think i was using before it happened: Appigo Todo, Atomic Web, Lastpass.
My Bill - 3 Mobile was nice enough to waive the $10 after 10 minutes and then the full amount($60.74) after 1.5 hours on the phone! The main argument i used was that it's not fair for there to be not option to stop excess usage from occurring, while at the same time allowing devices with bugs(maybe) like this to be on their network.

    Hi,
in my experience there is a difference between an IMAP
and a POP3 acccount. With a MobileMe IMAP email account
i always have to tap on the attachments to download them
completely when they are bigger than 100 KB - there seems
to be an automatic limit in the iPhones Mail app.
With a POP3 account all attachments are downloaded auto-
matically - no matter which size they have.
I can't unterstand, why there is a difference. That is
nonsense. Not everyone has IMAP email accounts.
And an attachment download size limit only with IMAP and
not with POP3 is incomprehensible. If you got no mobile
flatrate that can cost lots of money!
My wish is a possibility to set a size limit for the
attachment download or a limit similar to the IMAP limit.

    Josch

  • Image Processor bug causes PS to crash (CS5, 12.0.4, Win7x64) -

    Hi,
I'm trying to process 64 RAW files using Image Processor, and I noticed that Photoshop (x64, I don't have the 32-bit version installed) never closes any of the files after it has processed them. This causes the RAM to fill, and eventually Photoshop to crash. I tried both via Bridge (Tools --> Photoshop --> Image Processor), and Photoshop itself. I have a new system with 8GB RAM, and when I start up Image Processor, Task Manager tells me PS eats away 6.5-7GB of it during the first minute. Shortly after PS crashes.
My updates are up-to-date according to the update manager. I haven't had this problem ever before, so the cause must be the 12.0.4 update (or the one before it). Is there a workaround or an update on the way? Maybe this is a known bug. I found out that people have experienced the same behaviour with CS4.
    Kind regards,
    Kimmo

Sorry for the delay in response; the Adobe server for logging in was down for hours.
The reason I'm on the latest drivers is that I made a clean install of Windows 7 a couple of days back.
Regarding the Intel driver I mentioned I downloaded: I had to go another route; the Intel driver "was not validated for this system", so I had to get the latest driver from the manufacturer of the computer -- which kind of sucks, to be honest. Well, anyways, the driver version from the manufacturer is the same I had from Windows Update (i.e. not the latest possible), but I went and installed it anyway -- thinking that maybe it's been "customized" somehow...
Unfortunately it brought no change. Action B still accumulates files while others do not.
I should clarify that the reason why the "Wood Frame" kept accumulating files in the PS main window was that it never finished the process. I tried it to run on pictures that were larger than what it was designed for and thus it stopped mid-process and left the window open.
(BTW: I'm talking about windows and tabs interchangeably here)
"Action B", as I've called it in this thread, does generate a final, processed JPEG, but apparently it doesn't return a confirmation of it finishing to the Image Processor. Without Image Processor knowing that the script finished successfully it leaves the file open.
I see that in File --> Automate --> Batch it is possible to have the process "Save and Close" each file it processes. Maybe it would be beneficial to have a similar function for Image Processor. And not only "just in case" -- the user might actually want to leave all the files open, who knows, but in situations like these a forced closing of a file -- be it finished or not -- would be nice.
I would also like to point out to other people reading this thread that, while this problem can be fixed by simply remaking the troublesome action, I feel finding the cause for it would benefit a lot of people too. Maybe the action was corrupted somehow, maybe PS 12.0.4. has a bug that makes my "Action B" from 11/2011 incompatible -- would be nice to know, huh?

  • Possible Tab Bug?

The current bug: Adding an additional tab below another will cause the tab to looked messed up. The work around suggested was to create a page (with new tabs), publish it as a portlet underneath a main tab. Then you will visually see tabs underneath tabs.
The new problem you get with this work around is your content underneath the sub-tab will not show up the first load. You have to click on another tab, then back to the previous tab to show the content.
Another weird thing I ran across having to do with regions and published folders. I found that you cannot set a corrent percentage within regions when folders are added to regions.
For instance; Under a tab, divid a region into two regions. The first region make 5% and the second 95%; now when you add your (folder) portlets underneath both regions you will see when viewing it, that it will show up 50% and 50%. If you take out the folder portlet on region 1, and add a application portlet; everything shows up fine.
I have come across varies things like this, but I will start posting the errors and possible work arounds.

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>The new problem you get with this work around is your content underneath the sub-tab will not show up the first load. You have to click on another tab, then back to the previous tab to show the content.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
I noticed this also. (in 3.0.6.7.2 on NT).
What's funny about this is that this is exactly the same as a bug with sub-tabs in the EA release. Maybe the data structure of a sub-tab and a page in a tab is very similar...

  • Textfield redraw bug caused by text overflow

Situation: I have a runtime created movieclip with a dynamic
textfield contained in it. Some fonts types cause overflow in the
textfield (part of the text is drawed outside the textfield area)
causing a redraw bug when dragging the movieclip. The overlow
occurs on the left / right side of the textfield but only for
certain characters (because they are wider then usual).
If you have a textfield with the text "f" using the New Timer
Roman font, an overflow will occur on the right side of the
textfield, causing the above redraw bug. For other fonts the bug
also happen on the left side.
The problem is solved by recreating the movieclip, but I am
dragging the movieclip so I will apreciate if someone have a better
    solution...

are you adding content dynamically or using preloaded text
    with non supported Font?
in both the case try to embed font and then once data is
    placed inside textfield use
updateAfterEvent() to refresh or make your own refresh script
if possible coz sometimes this method wont give u desired
    result.

  • How It Was Fixed (Possible Software Bug Not Hardware): Getting the iMac Screen/Menus Garbled and/or Yellow Circle Before Getting Into Finder Issues?

Hi. Possible fix done to my late- 2009 iMac's screen/graphics issue that may work God willing, hopefully for most [In my case it sometimes had that yellow circle that appears before it goes to the Finder but mostly it was a messed up desktop and menus (unreadable mostly) after months, prayers and weeks of fixing it; recommended to be read entirely first coz' it's a bit complicated (like a lot of subplots). If uncomfortable to try coz' it involved a GPU stress test, contact your authorized Apple service center for their advice]. I had an iMac (late 2009) screen garbling a few hours ago (was weeks ago when it resurfaced until it got worse that it's at every boot on Mavericks):
†        I booted to Snow Leopard USB external (my back-up OS) drive then run the first    person shooter at redeclipse.net. I set everything to max, including the display, resolution and graphics setting with fullscreen and v-sync on. I then refreshed it which brought it back to normal (I then tested it's stability with GPUTest 0.7 with Furmark for 15 minutes). * if the display options have been set to max before, bring it back to the default then refresh and then max it again Possibly any games that's has the graphic settings (or more advanced) of Red Eclipse could work (other free ones are Xonotic and Open Arena which are based on Quake 1 or 3s engine I believe).
Optional but not recommended (have warrantied if that's still available or have it repaired at authorized service centers):
If that doesn't work, review articles and videos on how to open an Intel iMac and get an iPhone/iPad/another way to get to the 'net ready for research (I opened mine very carefully on the right side with a cutter with blade extended far prying it carefully then I inserted a flat end, sturdy plastic used for mixing epoxy then removed the cutter carefully to let the plastic mixing tool do the prying) to see if the cable connected to the logicboard which is on top of, is connected (mine was detached but I'm not sure if the adjusting and tilting of the screen overtime for 2 & 1/2 years, detached it) then do † above again.
It could to be a software problem, a possible Apple ATI driver bug that takes overtime to surface (2 1/2 years it resurfaced because this started in my case after upgrading to Lion when Apple coded things mostly from the ground up. Snow Leopard didn't have this problem).
Thank you for your time. Have a great upcoming sunday mass/great upcoming weekend. I hope this helps.
God bless, Rev. 21:4, Matt. 16:18

Does an external display also act in a similar manner as the internal one?
Some earlier Intel-based iMacs had graphic processor card issues; not sure what
the symptoms of the majority of them were, but some had odd patterns, others
went black, and some would range from OK to totally unusable. Among others.
So there is a chance the graphic processor may be going out; or just the circuitry
that controls the backlight. An inverter may be weak or other circuit to the display
    could be wearing out.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
If you have access to an Apple Store with Genius bar, they can perform some kinds
of diagnostic tests there even though the computer is out-of-warranty; that may be
of help to narrow down the cause of the symptoms you've noticed. They may not be
able to repair it, however, at an Apple Store; as it is rather old by today's standard.
An Apple Authorized Service Provider could do repairs and testing on older models
the Apple Store's Genius and other may not be set up to handle due to vintage.
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
    Visit an Apple Retail Store
There is a country locator page to help find either of the above in regions outside
of the US & Canada, not sure how the above links would work; and it appears my
bookmarks to the country locator page may not be accessible now to post here.
You may be able to get an idea about what kinds of parts support the display
function by name by looking into an iFixit.com repair guide for your iMac series.
Hopefully the parts supporting the display are the reason it is dimming down, as
a graphic processor failure likely would exhibit other behaviors than just dimming.
PS: I see you've added content to your thread after I'd started working on this
& the answer likely is a hardware repair; professional testing is worth the time
and you seem to have at least one other thread on the same topic....
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • ITunes sync bug causes space on iPod/iPhone to be gradually lost over time

This topic pertains to iTunes for Windows version 10.1.1 and most likely all prior versions. At the time of this writing 10.1.1 is the latest version.
I have clearly identified a bug with the procedure iTunes uses specifically to copy Music over to the iPod and iPhone units. A detailed description with steps to reproduce follows, but first the summary: Space is gradually wasted by iTunes erroneously copying certain tracks twice! The 2nd copy is not recorded in the itunesDB file, and space wasted on these duplicate tracks is counted under "Other" in the iTunes capacity screen. It is impossible to ever retrieve this space from the portable device without doing a factory restore on the Summary screen, which of course will also wipe out all your Apps, Videos, Photos, Music, etc at the same time. Hardly an ideal workaround!!
    Details:
When several tracks are to be copied to the portable device; either an iPod or an iPhone, and I have successfully reproduced this on both an iPod nano 5th Generation and an iPhone 4, sometimes a track is accidentally copied twice while, one of the selected tracks isn't copied at all. The user will notice when this occurs, that during their sync, one of their songs just seems to be missing. Syncing again will then copy the track which was missed during the last sync, but unfortunately, the 2nd copy of the track that was erroneously duplicated remains. The track which is duplicated appears in the hidden folder on your iPod file system as both the AAAA.mp3 filename structure and the <track name>.mp3 file name. Oddly enough, when this bug occurs, the itunesDB does not associate to the AAAA.mp3 like it normally would, but to the <track name>.mp3 and the AAAA.mp3 file is just wasted space on your device which cannot be recovered without manually deleting this file (a task which is impossible on an iPhone without hacking the device).
It is easy to reproduce this. This is very obvious if you start with an empty, new iPod. Sync a bunch of tracks to your iPod (the more the better), in fact this cannot happen if you only sync 1 track at a time, then check to see if the number of tracks is equal to the number of tracks that should be there. i.e. did the sync seem to just miss 1 or 2 tracks?
Make sure "Enable disk mode" is checked for your device, and browse to (Drive Letter):\iPod_Control\Music\ and you will eventually find that exact number of files which have actual track names instead of the standard AAAA.mp3 type filename. Next, in iTunes, remove ALL songs and any other forms of audio (such as podcasts), from the device. Your music folder techincally should now be empty, but as you browse through the hidden Music folder in the device, you will stumble upon a couple of files that remain. These are the orphaned files I've been talking about.
    The effect:
Over time, with repeated additions and removal of songs from one's device, these files accumulate. The iPod owner, none the wiser, will start to wonder why "Other" in the iTunes capacity display is continuing to grow. I was highly suspicious after cleaning out my iPod entirely, that "Other" was still showing 1.6GB!! I browsed through the filesystem wondering why which led me to discover tons of various music files in the music folder which shouldn't have been there (after all, iTunes shows no music stored on this device).
    The Fix:
Some sort of bug is causing this erroneous duplicate copy to be generated, and then the database to actually reference the erroneous copy instead of the AAAA.mp3 copy. One workaround iTunes could actually build in some sort of enumeration function that scans all of it's internal F## folders in the Music folder looking for these orphaned files, and simply erase them if they are not contained in the itunesDB. Pushing out this type of behavior into a new iTunes release would also fix the problem for all the people who've already racked up GBs of wasted space as that space would suddenly become available again for apps, tracks, and other files.

Two steps forward - one step back.
Thanks to insight from others here I enabled disk use and went to [drive letter]/iPod/control/music
There I saw a long list of folders called F00, F01, F02 etc.
In my case there were 49 of them with roughly 400 files in each folder.
The bulk of the files were named ABCD.mp4 down to ZYXW.mp4.
In each of the fifty folders were, as predicted above, a handful of song files labeled as such - ie borntorun.mp3 or iseered.mp4
I opened each and every one of the folders, deleted the files with real names and synced the pod.
On my 120 GB the yellow "other" fell dramatically, down to under 1 GB. Which is under 1% of the total. Not great but acceptable.
    So far, so good.
Now that I had fresh space I set about adding new songs to the pod.
Imagine my disappointment when I rechecked the F00 to F49 folders and saw that song name files had crept back in. Not as many, and I was able to delete them quickly and keep "other" under 1 GB. But still. It's like having crab grass or rodents.
Is there any hint that iTunes might address the underlying cause?
In the gripping process of deleting four or five files from each folder I noted that some specific files came up again and again. Just for laughs I'm going to delete and re-add those songs in case that helps.

  • Possible strange bug with parallel loops in LV2010

I have a specific code which does not execute correctly in parallel, but making almost any small change to the code causes it to work.  Even more bizarre, I can change it so that it sometimes works correctly, and somtimes doesn't. Interested?  Read on...
I have a relatively simple VI (to compute 2D Wavelet Denoising on planes of a 3D array) with the following block diagram (debugging not allowed):
The parallel loop is set to 8 automatically-partitioned instances, and I've tested this on 2-core and 8-core machines.  When the #cores wired into the loop is not one, several of the iterations do not compute (for example 4 out of 24).  I can check this by putting a break in the VI called inside the loop and counting how many times it is called.
I can do a number of things to make all iterations run:
    - put an indicator inside the loop on the iteration number, or anything else (except the P node)
    - wire the iteration number outside the loop to an indicator
    - remove the case structure
    - remove the loop in the other case (it's at the moment identical except for a call to a different VI which uses Discrete WT instead of Undecimated WT -- if I change the other case to match this one, the other case runs fine but this one still fails)
    - change code outside the loop
    - turn on debugging!
    - change the loop setup to another number of instances other than 8
    - change the loop setup to set the number of partitions
I can also do a number of things that do not solve the problem:
    - rewriting the loop from scratch
    - copying the loop from the other case
    - saving for LV2009 (in which everything runs as expected) and then reloading (and presumably recompiling) in 2010
Stranger still, if I replace the called VI with a dummy VI (which simply adds one to the input 2D array so I can tell if it executes), then as long as the other wires are still wired in, it sometimes executes all iterations, and sometimes doesn't (roughly 50% split)!!!  Any other changes and it always works fine.
I've managed to replace as much as possible with dummy code and still keep the results the same (i.e. sometimes executing all iterations and sometimes not).
If you want to check it out (on a multicore machine with LV2010), run LoopTest.vi, and the results at the index shown should sometimes be 13 and sometimes 14. Changing #cores to 1 will always give a result of 14, changing WT to DWT always gives 14, even though the code inside both cases is identical!
Hope it's not just me, otherwise I'll be sure that LV hates me!
    Attachments:
    LoopTest.zip ‏355 KB

OK, here's a new version that exhibits the same behaviour, but is hopefully simpler to understand.
The expected result is to add one to the whole array, however sometimes not all of the parallel iterations are executed.  Run ParallelLoopTest.vi from the attached ZIP file on a multi-core machine to verify.  This screenshot shows that sometimes it works correctly, and sometimes not:
The code in the other case is identical (created by duplicating the case) but always works correctly.

  • ORA-20876 in csv export from interactive report = Possibly a bug?

    Hi Apex team,
yesterday i tried to download data to csv from an interactive report. The resulting csv file contained a "ORA-20876: Stop APEX Engine" only and no other data. I played around with other reports in my application and had no problems with exports.
After some investigation i found out that the buggy report contains a column of display type "Display as text (based on a LOV, escape special characters)". When I changed this column type to "Standard Report Column" for example, the error didn't appear anymore and the csv export contained complete data.
Maybe this is a bug? The environment is Apex 4.1.1.00.23 on 11g (UTF-8). Is there a workaround available?
    Regards,
    Jens
    Edited by: j.gauger on 06.02.2013 14:10
    Additional Information
The problem seems to occur only if a Shared Components LOV of type "Static" is referenced in the IR column.

    Hi,
what happens if you take the query from IR report and create a new classic report?
On this report enable csv export and then try the export.
Maybe that (format) data are causing export to fail.
Try to export just one row in your IR report (and classic report), so that you add where rownum < 2.

  • Intel processor bug causes Windows 2008r2 guest to blue screen

We recently purchased several B200-M3 blades with E5-2680v2 processors.  Our UCS infrastructure and blade firmware is at 2.2(1d).  ESXi hosts are at 5.5u1.
From my reading of the Release Notes, this makes the new blades vulnerable to Caveat CSCuo30572 which is a bug in the v2 processors that can cause Windows 2008R2 guests to blue screen.
VMware KB2073791 also deals with this bug
    The Intel Erratum is C135
Updating the firmware (2.2(1d) probably to fixed version 2.2(3d)) is a relatively long process in our environment.
Has anyone experienced this bug?  Do the guests blue screen at any particular time; e.g. when booting?  Are Windows 2012 guests impacted?  One of our new v2 blades was running Windows 2008R2 guests for about a week without any known problem.  It has since been taken out of production.
The Release Notes (2.2) description for CSCuo30572 is:  "Intel v2 processors no longer cause PSOD with Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 VM guests."  Should the PSOD (ESXi crash) actually be BSOD (Microsoft crash)?  Or can ESXi purple screens be caused also, crashing the entire host?
The Release Notes also indicate that the Caveat is resolved in release 2.2(2c)A.  Does the A indicate that an Infrastructure update is all that is needed?  That does not seem like it would supply the fixed microcode to the processors via BIOS.
I'm basically looking for some insight before proceeding with another FW update.  Thank you.

Yes, it refers to Infrastructure (UCS Manager, FI and IOM). You could just upgrade the infrastructure to 2.2.3d and leave your Servers at 2.2.1d

  • FYI: 1 possible solution and cause to Access Denied on opening PDF on network shares with Reader XI

    FYI
    Hi.
Updated in May to another release of Reader XI.
Got the problem stated in the titled of this post - with access denied for PDF on network shares.
    Reason:
Long time error in Adobe Reader with shares and thumbnails causes me to use the thumbnail and preview fix done by a third party. Has worked for years - while Adobe has not seemed to care about fixing this problem ...
That's the real reason ...having to use an almost out-dated fix now.
However, if using the thumbnail and preview fix:
Then its legacy interaction with Adobe Rader is probably the cause of this error - reinstall (reregister) the preview and thumbnail fix - and the problem will go away.
... and Adobe Reader XI is back up with protected mode working - on Network shares ... with the thumbnails there.
Now if anybody is reading this from the Adobe staff ... please add the thumbnail and previews to Adobe Reader?
May you forgot this did not work on shares ... like forgot "forever" ... and meanwhile users got a third party fix they reinstall everytime from the age of Adobe Reader bloatware creating the FoxIt Reader spinoff.
Since then Reader has come a long way in tearms of realibility ... however, the missing thumbnail and preview on shares and x64 platform needs to be fixed.
Then these "cannot" open PDF on Network shares reports may go away ...?

  • My fan is on all the time - possible overheating; software cause?

I’ve got a 17” G4 powerbook running Panther (OS10.3.9). It has been doing great but lately I’m noticing that the fan is running all the time. The thing sits on one of those aluminum wedge-shaped platforms (for max. air flow) on my desk and the room isn’t very hot. I have a temp monitor running on it and it says 52 C, even though the machine isn’t doing anything computational. I’ve also gotten one warning from the SMART sensor on the internal drive about a possible future failure due to high heat. I do know that my disk space is running low (2 Gigs when I boot up, which slowly disappears as I work). Is there anything software-related that can be the cause of this or do I definitely need to send it to a repair shop? If the latter, then where do I send it? My AppleCare is surely expired now… Is an Apple store my best bet, or an independent repair place, or what?

I have a very similar problem. My G4 has been running great since I picked it up in January. But, in the last couple days my fan has been running real loud and the machine in general has been hot. Today was watching some youtube and my machine started to freeze up all togeather (a problem I've never had before) as the fan started sound extra loud. As I tried to power down my machine the fan started to make a more grinding type of sound and cause my whole laptop to vibrate. I just really want to know the best coarse of action here. Should I take my mahine to my mac people and have them replace the fan? Is this a common problem? What is this a cronic problem that is a symtom of somthing more ominoius?
    Thanks for you're help!!!

  • Possible Update Bug in Skype

    Description:
You sign up for Skype with some email X, and later change that email to another email Y. After the update, if someone tries to search for you with the old email X, they can still find you!! If they try the new email Y, they will not find you. I changed the primary email. It seems like if you sign up with an email and then update it later, Skype will still keep the original for search purposes.
This is a serious bug. Are there any fixes for it?

Hi, Comme_name, and welcome to the Community,
I did ask for clarification on this: it really is only a matter of time before the updates cross-reference and updates process in Skype.
Legacy Skype accounts used account names rather than e-mail addresses.  However, one's e-mail address used as a Skype account's registered e-mail address is key to receiving account correspondence from Skype as well as re-setting an account password amongst other account-related uses.
