Possible Retina Macbook Keyboard Backlight Issue?

This just happened to me about 20 minutes ago.
I was sitting in my room reading up on some news articles when I noticed that some of my keys on the keyboard were dimmer than the rest. I turned the backlight off and back on again but the problem persisted. I then whacked (Not too hard) the keyboard and noticed they flashed back to their original brightness and then went back down. After a few more hits they came back on. Should I be concerned about this issue?

  • Unibody Macbook display issue and keyboard backlight issues while booting

I have a 13" aluminum macbook which has been having some issues when booting up. The machine seems to be booting just fine all the way up to the log in screen. The display is normal and everything seems fine. After I log in, the various pieces of the screen start to display (desktop icons, menu bar, etc) and my wallpaper is visible. After a few seconds, the display seems to degrade and the wallpaper image is visible but distorted. It is almost as if the machine is in some sort of safe mode (pardon the windows reference).
Normally, I have my macbook connected to an external display and external mouse/keyboard. After a reboot, this issue occurs. If I put the macbook in sleep mode, and then wake it by clicking the external mouse, the display reappears normally and everything is fine.
The problem is when I am NOT connected to these external devices. The screen stays distorted (like it has lost its full color range) and there are other issues. The keyboard backlight seems to be disables and highlighting text does not work normally. I have tried rebooting, removing the battery and rebooting, resetting the SMC, removing recent applications (chrome, quicklook, etc.). Has anyone heard of or experienced this behavior?
    Thanks.

Have you called Applecare? If you sent the machine in and it came back with a cracked case, that seems like an Apple repair to me.
As for the display issue - I think I would accept it and move on. Unfortunately, with these ever-higher resolution displays, we have more dead pixels. Since no one would pay $3000 for a display with 100% no dead pixel guarantee, Apple has to alot for a few dead pixels being acceptable inorder to keep prices reasonable.

Check with other vendors, this is common practice with LCDs (even HDTVs).
I know it isn't great to hear this, but it is what it is.

  • Retina Late 2013 13' Keyboard Backlight Issue

Since I got the computer, many times the keyboard backlight won't work in every keys. Some keys have the lights on, another dont. The first and the second row of the keys have that issue... Sometimes I reset SMC and they start to work, sometimes dont. It is constantly happening. What could it be?
    Thanks

I have the same problem with my late 2013 MacBook Pro 13"; it only occurs when the backlight is set on one of the lower setting. While it's not that big of a deal it's still somewhat annoying. It is very noticeable if you're looking directly at the keyboard.

  • Macbook pro 13" running moutain lion keyboard backlight issue

Is anyone experiencing the same problem? I've upgraded my macbook pro (mid 2009) to Mountain lion and then the keyboard backlight doesn't work now. I've browsed around for solutions suggesting to uncheck the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" found in System preference > keyboard section, but this options doesnt exist for me. Please help. Many thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Free upgrades to Mountain Lion already ended, so now you have to pay to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. I recommend you to return the MacBook Pro and get another one with Mountain Lion if you want. Another option is to wait until Apple launches Mavericks and upgrade to that version

  • Macbook keyboard backlight auto turn-on when room is dark?

I have a late 2013 13" Retina Macbook Pro (running Mavericks) and am a relatively new OSX user. I know that I can modify keyboard backlight settings and have the brightness level adjust automatically (similar to how the screen brightness adjusts) however I don't actually want the keyboard's backlight on when the room is light. The fact that the auto-adjust setting makes the keyboard brighter in a light room is annoying to me.
Is there any way to have the backlight automatically turn on ONLY when the room is BELOW a certain brightness threshold. Perhaps there is a 3rd party app that can add this functionality? Manually pressing F5 and F6 works fine, but ideally I'd like to have this automated somehow.
    Thanks!

Billy_budd,   Unfortunately it's not even that things are finicky for me. I haven't experienced any auto-turnon functionality at all. Are you running Mavericks? I've seen some older posts referring to this being a possibility. Is there a specific way you've enabled this option? I don't see anything in my settings.
If I select the tickbox I've highlighted in the screenshot below, the brightness of the keyboard mimicks the auto-audjust behaviour of the screen's backlight. With it unchecked, I have to use F5 or F6 to see any keyboard brightness changes. I haven't experienced the keyboard automatically turning on when the lights turn off.

  • Weird Keyboard Backlight Issue

I'm having a weird problem with keyboard backlighting on my new Macbook pro. In my personal account, I'm unable to adjust the keyboard backlighting using the function keys. No amount of diddling with the preferences will allow me to get this working. However, if I create a new account on the same machine, everything works normally.
As I've migrated from a Powerbook G4 to a Macbook and now to a Macbook Pro, my hunch is that some old preferences still remain on this machine that are conflicting with how it operates. Can anyone tell me how to reset the appropriate preference files so my keyboard backlight will work correctly?

    Hi, Michael -
In theory, what you propose should work.
However, you may be pushing the limit for cable length -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31116
There are ways around that. One is to use an active extender cable, such as one like this -
    http://www.usbgear.com/usa/item_49.html
It is best to eliminate connections wherever possible - each connection is a possible source of corrosion or dirt, which can cause noise; or fault, which can cause loss of connection.

  • Retina MacBook Pro Heat Issues ?

    Hello,
i have noticed that my new MacBook Pro with Retina Display gets exceptionally hot, especially when playing some fairly basic games like "Tomb Raider Underworld". I have noticed the heat in the area of the Keyboard an the bottom. The aluminum between the keys gets so hot that i can barely touch it.
Has anybody got the same issue ?
    What should i do ?

see Vastly Improved Thermals from AnaandTech as part of their review of the Retina MacBook Pro.   If you check the bottom of the page you can see if you GPU stress test the laptop it can get sufficiently hot.   About the middle of this page, you can see how Apple redeigned the heat pipes along with fans to bleed off Heat.

  • Using third party headset with Retina Macbook Pro (microphone issue)

    Good day, everyone!
I have very strange issue with my Retina Macbook Pro (Late 2013) OS X 10.9.3
When I plug in my Steel Series Headset, its microphone not recognised by system and only "Internal microphone" available in Settings - Sound - Input.
Headset itself works perfectly fine, because when I plug it to my iPhone, its microphone works without any problems.
Macbook's headphone port also works fine — when I plug in my iPhone original headset to Macbook, its mic works good and I can see "External microphone" in Settings - Sound - Input.
So headset is ok and headphone port is ok. What is the problem?
How to force macbook to use headset microphone instead of built-in one?
    Thanks in advance

Either contact the sales staff at the store where you ordered your Mac from or contact the speaker manufacturer & ask them.

  • Keyboard Backlighting issue?

Hi all. I'm having an issue with my new MBP... (Don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's a flaw with the MBP)
This has only happened when I wake my MBP from sleep and it's on battery power (haven't tried it plugged in yet... I'm currently at work). If I try to adjust the backlight for the keyboard, it doesn't work. There is a small circle with a line through it when I try to raise/lower the light (kind of like a no smoking sign). Whats going on? Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

I just got back from the genius bar, feeling like a fool, because my keyboard backlight would not turn on, even after checking all the settings in system preferences and pressing f8 and f10 and covering the speaker grilles to no avail. The Genius put his hands over the speaker grilles and asked me to push f10. Nothing happened. then he said hold down f10, and the keyboard backlight turned on! I said thanks and assumed it was user error, then drove 45 minutes back home. Now I am at home and the keyboard backlight won't turn on! The HUD display now shows how bright it should be and the display reacts to the covering of the speakers just fine. I am so frustrated. I was on hold for 41 minutes and now am on hold for 43 minutes after talking to someone who was going to get the genius back on the line with me. I just got the MBP back from repair where they replaced the logic board, and I assumed the reason it didn't work was that something didn't get plugged in all the way upon reassembly, and now I wonder that again...
If there is anything else software related I can do to troubleshoot this, please let me know.

  • HT1338 Keyboard Backlight Issue

    Hi Everyone,
I was recently advised to reinstall Lion due to long start-up times. After reinstalling, I noticed that the keyboard backlight was no longer working. I have read many other threads advising what to do but this is what I have done as far:
    Reset SMC and PRAM
Cover iSight to establish the ALS is working (it is)
Use the F5/F6 keys to change the intensity - these work because the graphic comes up when I press them but they have no effect on the backlight
    Installed LabTick (had no effect)
Even after all of this my keyboard backlight remains off.
I would really appreciate help into my issue.
    Thanks.

Hi, zrosignal - Try creating a new user account, then log in to that account and see if the problem repeats itself. If the keyboard backlighting works as expected in the new account, log back in to your original user account and go to yourusername/Library/Preferences and delete the file com.apple.BezelServices.plist, then log out and back in again or restart and see if the problem is fixed.
If the issue repeats itself in the new account you create, then you may have a hardware problem (which is probably no more serious than a loose cable connection).
    Let us know what happens.
    Good luck!

  • Installed Windows 8.1 on Retina Macbook Pro - Many issues

I just recently downloaded the Windows 8.1 .iso file from Microsoft's website. My school got it for me and other members of my club for free so I don't have any install disks or anything like that. I used the Bootcamp Assistant to burn the .iso file to an external hard drive, let it install, and started it up. I'm running it on a mid-2012 15" retina Macbook Pro. Here are some problems I'm encountering. If anyone could help solve any of them, It'd be greatly appreciated.
First off, when I set the resolution to 2880x1800, most windows and icons are sized normally. However, the taskbar is absolutely tiny and some text (like the desktop icon text) is also very small. Any other resolution makes everything look distorted and blurry.
I can't connect to the internet. It doesn't detect any wireless networks at all even though I know there are many in the area.
The sound only works through headphones. Not through the speakers.
Some text is crisp and clear (like menu titles) but other times it's very pixelated.
    Thanks for any help!

lower down your resolution in the Control Panel

  • Keyboard backlight Issues

Hi, after updating to windows 10 my keyboard backlight is not changing from the red colour and the speaker lights won't turn off aswell.  Can anyone help me with this? Cheers.

The way mine works is that the ambient light sensor turns the keyboard backlight on or off.  The granular brightness settings are controlled by the function keys.  The light sensor will change the brightness of the display but the keyboard is on/off.
    Regards
Edit:  I take it back.  Mine does adjust with the light.  Try holding your finger over the sensor so it's "dark" and adjusting the light. Then remove your finger and see it it adjust properly.  If not, an SMC reset may be in order.

  • Has ANYONE resolved the keyboard backlight issue with the 1.67 15" PB?

Here is the issue. I got a used PB G4 1.67 G4 off of Craigslist on Thursday night. When I picked it up the owner had done a re-install of the OS and it booted to the intro movie. While standing in the dark parking lot the backlight on the keyboard WAS working. I shut the machine off and got into the car to fill out the registration information and I noticed the backlight was NOT on. I pressed the buttons and nothing. I checked the keyboard and mouse system preference and the ambient lighting on/off was NOT there!
Does anyone have a solution to this problem or should I just forget about this feature?
Thank you all for your help.
    Blake

I thank you for the response. In your case was the control for the lighting missing from the keyboard system prefs? That is what kills me, it worked one minute and not the next and I can't even see the controls for it.
    Thanks again,

  • Retina MacBook Pro fan issue

I've noticed when playing games or doing anything graphic intensive, only 1 fan goes on? as far as I know the RMBP 13 inch has a left and right fan but I only ever hear the right fan. I downloaded "macs fan control" and only my right fan shows up there. Is this an issue that needs resolved?

Thankyou! I had asked an apple "expert" and they told me the device was defected. Obviously they need to some more research on their own products. again thanks
In your case, this is the definitive place to find out about your specific MBP and all of its internal components.
