Possible solution to slow backup... Delete NY Times App

Hopefully this will help others that are experiencing slow sync of their iPhone.
I was having to wait 15-20 minutes to have the phone backup every time I sync'ed the phone. I have about 35 apps on the phone but once I removed the NY Times app the speed of the backup is now in the seconds

I had the same issue. At times I would wait up to 5 hours for the full back-up. Last Sunday I took some pictures with the phone and when I pressed the menu button the phone froze. I could see calls coming in but I couldn't pick them up. I tried to shut it off but when I sled the red slide to the right to shut it off it froze in that position and the phone wouldn't shut off. I mean, this was the crash of crashes!!! I went home and it allowed me to do a full back-up which took about 3 hours. After the back up the phone was in the same condition so I decided to restore it to factory settings. After restore I tried to sync with iTunes which informed me that an iPhone was previously sync and I could restore the phone so I did. It took about 3 hours and now the phone was back to normal but when I connected it again with iTunes it acted as it was the first time so it asked me to restore it again. I did and left it overnight. In the morning it was still half-way done so I decided to unplug. After I unplugged I checked and the phone was all good, just as before the crash. All the apps were there, all the info, absolutely everything. Even the levels in the games I have. I tried to sync one more time and this time it went through the back-up and sync so fast I got scared. I tried it again with the same results. Since then it only takes me a few minutes to sync and back-up and I have upwards of 30 apps on it and about 6Gb of music plus another 2Gb of pictures, podcasts, etc. Restoring it worked for me so it might work for you too.

  • Possibly solution to slow deleting if using Kapersky Internet Security

In case anyone has a similr problem i discovered today that the File AV within Kersky Internet Security 2010 is killing the process when deelting files making it take forever.  The solutions I have found so far are:
    a) Turn off the File AV completely under settings
b)There is an option under  File AV / settings/additional go to "pause on application startup" click select and at the exe.
    Hope that helps someone
    Mike

FWIW, I have a similar problem with Webroot's Spy Sweeper - it seems to kill MOVE and DELETE performance.
When I've had to copy 100's or 1000's of large files, it will crawl and Windows will report "4 hours remaining"... I turn off the A/V and all of a sudden it's "2 minutes remaining".

  • Recover backup deleted by Time Machine

    Hi,
8 months ago, I made a backup of my macbook with time machine. Time Machine created a folder Backups.backupdb on my external hard drive with that backup. 10 days ago, I made a new backup of my computer and it went to the same folder with a new date.
After, when I tried to create a partition on this external disk, time machine started erasing my first backup and I could't do nothing to avoid it. Maybe it happened, because the disk was getting full. The 150Gb of backup that was there was erased and now it is 150Gb of empty space disk. Since then, I never wrote again on the disk in order to recover the lost data.
What can I do to recover the data from the old backup that was erased?
    Thanks,
    Paulo

This backup that was erased from my external drive had 8 months and since then it's no longer on my mac. I did the backup and clean the data on my mac, in order to re-install Leopard. And I re-installed it again 10 days ago and did new backup. The old backup was not supposed to be erased by time machine without my permission. Since I didn't write over the erased data since then, I thaught It could be recovered.

  • Possible solution to slow upload speed

After my old home built rig died I built another. Speedtest.net consistantly showed at least 75/75 with old rig and new one was 85mb down and only 35mb-40mb upload. Having seen this in the past I explored. Old rig used onboard Atheros network interface card (aka 'NIC'), new rig has onboard Realtek NIC.
Problem: Slow upload speeds but only after computer has been unused for a period of time. We all do this.
Note: Every single Windows install by default has "'Power Management" turn off the NIC when not in use. To disable NIC power down go to driver properties "Power Management" tab and uncheck all boxes.
After ruling out the obvious - Your PC, Router and Verizon tests, and have flushed your browser cache and DNS, here is the most likely problem causing intermittent slow upload speeds:
TEST 1: Upon complete computer reboot (not sleep or hibernate) up and download
                  speeds are ok.
SYMPTOM: Computer first powers down (after whatever minutes power settings are set
at) and is then woken up.
    1) Newer Realtek NIC drivers have three settings of interest under the 'Advanced' tab.
1a) "Energy Efficient Ethernet" Default is 'Enabled'. Set to 'Disabled'.
1b) "Green Ethernet" Default is 'Enabled'. Set to 'Disabled'.
1c) "WOL & Shutdown Link Speed" Default is "10 mbps First" Set to "Not Speed
                  Down".
    2) Problem occurs when computer sits unused then NIC powers up again to the "10
        Mbps First".
    3) Though the NIC will eventually uprate to higher speed, it will start at lower rate thus
        causing the problem.
    4) My old Atheros NIC driver did not have the driver settings to save power and the
        Realtek one did.
    5) Other NIC manufacturers may or may not have driver based power settings. At the
very least go in the "Power Management" settings and uncheck boxes so NIC never
        powers down.
Common problem many do not think of in todays 'instant gratification' society. This happened way back in Win 3.11/95 days and continues to this day in all Windows OS's.
Hopefully others find this useful. And yes I shared this with Tech Support for their peer review process. Even if this works for some not all this is a common problem many tend to forget.
    ~Peace

Did it make any differnce to your speeds?
I have had this same issue on 2 systems for a year or so.  Both have the same realtek nic built in on the mobo - Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.  Both systems have the same issue with speeds.  have a 75/75 connection they both show a consistent download of around 83 and upload varies between 5 and 15.  I've tried changing drivers and got the same results.  Made the changes you noted and no difference.  I figure it's a mobo problem.  I added intel nics and that made a little diffrence - got the upload speed up to about 30.  As I have other systems that work fine - consistently about 83/85 - I just finally ignored the issue and never bother doing uploads on the defective systems.
Would be nice to know the answer though.

  • Torrent Clients - Possible solution to slow speed

You can always check with Glasnost to see of you are being throtled:
    http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/bttest.php
    But before that try this:
Set your torrent has client (usualy in prefernces) to 'limited' for upload and download rates
and specifying a value of 999999 in their respective boxes.
I previously had the scheduler on 'full speed' and it was very, very slow..
In fact the same file has just gone from 2.5kb/s ro 64kb/s.
Let me know if it works!
    All the best
    Steve

  • Possible solution to slow internet speed

I'm not promising anything here but this worked for me. I recomfigured my AEBS from scratch and didn't fool with anything else. now the weird part that made my base station work finally was placing the base station on its face (part with light facing down) my connection is great once again. I also placed the Airport farther away from the modem . I think the New AEBS can't handle & causes interference with other electronic devices(in my case the cable modem is next to it with my macbook.)
overall, I think the EM field around the base station might be a cause of all the problems

I had the same problem. I had WPA enabled and my internet was slow and would not go over 4000 kb on speed tests. With no security i got 16000 kb.
There are quite a few bugs in the Airport Extreme. I have slow wireless with WPA and i cannot open any ports using NAT-PMP or port mapping.
    Very disappointing.
Apple better release a update soon or i am goin to return it and buy the dlink dir-855 when it comes out. I want a dual-band wireless router.

  • IPhone slow backup

I have an iPhone 4 and when I plug it in to sync, it backed up for 9 hours and still hasn't finished! What's wrong? Or how can I fix this?

Wow! That totally solved my problem! I'd been trying to back up my iPhone for the entire morning (from 9:12 am to 11:20, it had only gotten through 20% of my iPhone and I simply got so frustrated I force quit iTunes and searched online for "slow iPhone backup" and found this post. Although I don't have the Guardian App, I went and deleted every single non-Apple App, and then reconnected my iPhone and was ASTONISHED to see my iPhone get backed up in less than 60 seconds!!! I'm not sure what was the offending App in my case, but clearly, it appears that when slow backups are a problem, Apps can most definitely be a cause...

  • Mirror or backup one Airport Time Capsule 2TB to another over the internet?

Hello, is it possible to mirror, or backup, one Airport Time Capsule 2TB to another, at a remote location over the internet?
    Much appreciated.

Copying a backup is actually a poor way to make reliable backups.. because an error creeps into the backup and the copy simply replicates it.
I would use a USB drive plugged directly into the computer, and use a software like CCC to make a bootable clone.. I tell you honestly.. it is just wonderful when you have disk issue in a computer to be able to plug in a hard drive and boot the computer from it. Especially Macs with their hard to reach drives. Changing a drive on a PC laptop or desktop computer is usually trivial. It is far from trivial in a Mac.
Use two USB drives and swap them over to offsite weekly. Then use cloud for incremental in between.. or a combo of the TM .. TM can backup to multiple destinations.

is it possible to restore a single deleted note from a time machine backup?  If so how?

    Hi James,
I was able to use VI server to invoke LV 6.1 VI's using LV 7.0 without issue.
After discovering this and mentioning it in a post somewhere, Rolf Kalbermatter indicated that was expected. and I should not be suprised.
    So....
    Vi Server may help you.

Do you know if the LabVIEW developers can/will create a way to overcome this problem rather than having to convert a VI through all the intermediate versions?
To the best of knowledge NO.
For each versino of LV there isw code included that runs behind the scenes when you open a VI from an earleir version which replaces old functions with the new versions. This is called Mutation code. To accomplish its task it has to know everything that changed between version X and Y. Since it is possible to baby step the versions up and the number of user that jump multiple major versions is small, I don't think any effort will go into that work.
THe largest attachment I have managed to upload was 3 or 4 Meg.

  • How can recover a Time Machine backup deleted from my time capsule?

I made a Time Machine backup from my Time Capsule. Yesterday I entered to my Time Capsule to deleted some files and I made a mistake and deleted my backup time machine and empty the trash of my computer. Is it posible recover that Time Machine Backup? Thank you very much.

For most users, it is not possible to retrieve a file that has been deleted this way.
In order to do so, you would have needed to power off your Time Capsule immediately after the file was deleted. Then, you must open up the Time Capsule and remove the hard drive, place it in a special enclosure, and use special software to try to retrieve the data.
Even if you do this, there is no guarantee that you will be able to retrieve the file.

  • Delete old time machine database directories on backup drive?

Had the hard drive replaced preemptivly on 2010  iMac under warrenty. Now in finder I see multiple database directories on the time capsule drive, Tims-iMac, and 2 entries called Tims-iMac 3 under the directory Backups.backupdb. (In term I only see one copy of Tims-Imac 3). The older Tims-Imac files start when the old drive was new and end when it was replaced. Time machine only shows the entries in the Tims-iMac 3 database.  I do not need any of the old directories in Tims-iMac anymore. I just added a ton of pictures to the system and would rather use the TM disk space for backups from this instalation. I doubt TM is going to delete entries from the old database when the drive fills up (now). I do not see a way to make TM delete these files or recognize that direcotry as a TM db.
Is it safe to delete the entire Tims-iMac directory? In finder?

Sounds like more than your HD was changed.  Time Machine thinks you got a new Mac.  A new logic board  will do that (it has a hardware address that Time Machine uses to identify your Mac).
I doubt TM is going to delete entries from the old database when the drive fills up (now).
Correct -- TM on your Mac won't delete backups (it thinks are) belong to another one.
Is it safe to delete the entire Tims-iMac directory? In finder?
Yes, but it will take a very long time to empty the trash (hold the Alt/Option key when you do that.)  If your backups are on a network (Time Capsule, etc.) connect via Ethernet cable when you can leave it for a long time. It will still be slow, but 2-3 times faster than WIFI.

  • I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.

I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.  The file is about 400GB and my MacBook has been trying to delete it for 5h now. It still says "deleting" but has not given me a "time remaining" yet. Any idea of what I could do????

You should not attempt to delete backups using the Finder. The result can be a corrupted backup.
I recommend you let it complete, no matter how long it takes. That could be days, if your TC is connected via wireless.
It is not necessary to delete backups, since Time Machine will delete old backups some time after they have been deleted from your source volume. For more information read Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini's explanation here: Should I delete old backups? If so, How?

  • Can't Completely Delete a Time Machine Backup

How do I completely delete a Time Machine Backup? In Snow Lepord I had no problem with deleting a Time Machine Backup. I back up my HHD on a external HHD. Since using Time Machine with Lion the back ups are not being fully deleted. My trash can each time I connect my external HHD is displaying deleted files. When I go to delete from trash I am told there are locked items. So I select the option to delete locked items, hear the deleted trash can sound but the trash can still indicates the files haven't been perminetly deleted yet. What is my problem here?

    hopesdead wrote:
None of that worked. I used the Terminal method. No good.
What does "no good" mean?  What happened, or didn't happen?  That should empty the trash on the disk. As mentioned, it may take a long time, if there's lots of files there.
Repairing will be no good to be cause my external HD contains everything on one partition. The backups are not on there own partition like that site assumes. Repairing did no good.
Do you mean you didn't try it?  If so, try it.  It may or may not be able to repair them, but it's worth a try.

Accidentally deleted my Time Machine backkups but all files are in the Trash. I am copying my files from Trash folder to another Portable Drive just incase I will not be able to restore my files as Put Back is not working because seems Time Machine backups is a part large database.
Is there anyway I can restore the files to Time Machine again? If there is, could you please tell me step by step ! If there is not any procedures, please advise me what should I do in this stage?
