Possible solution to slow internet speed

I'm not promising anything here but this worked for me. I recomfigured my AEBS from scratch and didn't fool with anything else. now the weird part that made my base station work finally was placing the base station on its face (part with light facing down) my connection is great once again. I also placed the Airport farther away from the modem . I think the New AEBS can't handle & causes interference with other electronic devices(in my case the cable modem is next to it with my macbook.)
overall, I think the EM field around the base station might be a cause of all the problems

I had the same problem. I had WPA enabled and my internet was slow and would not go over 4000 kb on speed tests. With no security i got 16000 kb.
There are quite a few bugs in the Airport Extreme. I have slow wireless with WPA and i cannot open any ports using NAT-PMP or port mapping.
Very disappointing.
Apple better release a update soon or i am goin to return it and buy the dlink dir-855 when it comes out. I want a dual-band wireless router.

  • Possible solution to slow upload speed

After my old home built rig died I built another. Speedtest.net consistantly showed at least 75/75 with old rig and new one was 85mb down and only 35mb-40mb upload. Having seen this in the past I explored. Old rig used onboard Atheros network interface card (aka 'NIC'), new rig has onboard Realtek NIC.
Problem: Slow upload speeds but only after computer has been unused for a period of time. We all do this.
Note: Every single Windows install by default has "'Power Management" turn off the NIC when not in use. To disable NIC power down go to driver properties "Power Management" tab and uncheck all boxes.
After ruling out the obvious - Your PC, Router and Verizon tests, and have flushed your browser cache and DNS, here is the most likely problem causing intermittent slow upload speeds:
TEST 1: Upon complete computer reboot (not sleep or hibernate) up and download
                  speeds are ok.
SYMPTOM: Computer first powers down (after whatever minutes power settings are set
at) and is then woken up.
    1) Newer Realtek NIC drivers have three settings of interest under the 'Advanced' tab.
1a) "Energy Efficient Ethernet" Default is 'Enabled'. Set to 'Disabled'.
1b) "Green Ethernet" Default is 'Enabled'. Set to 'Disabled'.
1c) "WOL & Shutdown Link Speed" Default is "10 mbps First" Set to "Not Speed
                  Down".
    2) Problem occurs when computer sits unused then NIC powers up again to the "10
        Mbps First".
    3) Though the NIC will eventually uprate to higher speed, it will start at lower rate thus
        causing the problem.
    4) My old Atheros NIC driver did not have the driver settings to save power and the
        Realtek one did.
    5) Other NIC manufacturers may or may not have driver based power settings. At the
very least go in the "Power Management" settings and uncheck boxes so NIC never
        powers down.
Common problem many do not think of in todays 'instant gratification' society. This happened way back in Win 3.11/95 days and continues to this day in all Windows OS's.
Hopefully others find this useful. And yes I shared this with Tech Support for their peer review process. Even if this works for some not all this is a common problem many tend to forget.
    ~Peace

Did it make any differnce to your speeds?
I have had this same issue on 2 systems for a year or so.  Both have the same realtek nic built in on the mobo - Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.  Both systems have the same issue with speeds.  have a 75/75 connection they both show a consistent download of around 83 and upload varies between 5 and 15.  I've tried changing drivers and got the same results.  Made the changes you noted and no difference.  I figure it's a mobo problem.  I added intel nics and that made a little diffrence - got the upload speed up to about 30.  As I have other systems that work fine - consistently about 83/85 - I just finally ignored the issue and never bother doing uploads on the defective systems.
Would be nice to know the answer though.

  • Slow internet speed -upgraded it to highest speed

I have had FiOS internet for about four years and never questioned the speed 10/2, but I had it plugged into the router.  On 3/4, I upgraded to TV FiOS/internet and phone bundle.  I do not have my computer where the router is located now (downstairs) and I had asked them to move it upstairs, but left before they had done it.  When I checked the speed (I guess the wireless speed since it is not plugged in to the router), it was 15.66/10 mbps.  I ordered the 35/35 mbps speed bundle.  I called Verizon and asked them about it and she checked the speed and said that it was "pretty good" considering it is wireless.  What?  I am not getting what I am paying for.  Do I need a DSL filter on all the phone lines?  Do I need a new router (I still have the old one)?  I have read on the community here that everyone has called several times to get an answer to the slow internet speed problem. Does anyone have the 35/35 mbps speed plan and have it work at this speed? I might as well go down to the 15 or 25 plan if that speed is all I am every going to get......But maybe if I go down to 25 plan, I'll get 10 or 15...... I will continue to try and work with Verizon to get this solved.   .Thanks for any help.

  • Slow internet speed - terrible service

For the last 5 weeks I have been plagued with very slow internet speed. I have spent at least 4 hours on the phone with verizon techs. They always say that they will call back and never do. This is absolutely the worst service imaginable.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon
    news.giganews.com
traceroute to 71.242.*.* (71.242.*.*), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
        1 gw1-g-vlan201.dca.giganews.com (216.196.98.4) 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms
        2 ash-bb1-link.telia.net (213.248.70.241) 39 ms 7 ms 7 ms
        3 TenGigE0-2-0-0.GW1.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.125.125.41) 4 ms 4 ms GigabitEthernet2-0-0.GW8.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.65.76.189) 4 ms
        4 so-7-1-0-0.PHIL-CORE-RTR1.verizon-gni.net (130.81.20.137) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        5 P3-0-0.PHIL-DSL-RTR11.verizon-gni.net (130.81.13.170) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        6 static-71-242-*-*.phlapa.east.verizon.net (71.242.*.*) 32 ms 32 ms 33 ms
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
#3 If you don't know how to get that info:
    a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
    b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

  • Slow internet speeds and dropping connection

hello, I am making this post on behalf of my dad, for a good few months (5-6 maybe even longer) we have been experiencing slow internet speeds and a dropping connection when ever the phone is picked up. when an incoming call is answered some or all devices connected to the internet drop out for a second then come back online, the connection does not completly disapear but causes any voice chat, streaming or gaming to disconect. We have BT wireless phones (not sure what exact type) which we have had for a few years. they are connected through an ADSL filter which as far i can remember has been there for years. We have a netgear DG834GT router which has also been there for a few years. I went onto its settings and got this information, not sure if its usefull or not.
    System Up Time 42:18:47
    ADSL Link

    Line Attenuation
    61.0 db
    31.5 db
    Noise Margin

    13.0 db
I also got this from the BTW speed tester
    1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
    Download  Speed

    0 Mbps
    2 Mbps
    Max Achievable Speed

For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :1.76 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1.25 Mbps
I hope this is enough information to figure out what is going on with it.

put everything back as it was and this is what it looks like now:
    ADSL Link

also while i was doing that i did i quiet line test and both myself and my brother listened to it and agreed that there was buzzing/static

  • Slow internet speed, being used by unknown websites

    Hello all,
For about a month i have been experiencing slower internet speeds than usual. Contacted the isp and went through all the processes and there was not a problem at their end. I was advised to go to network utility and check how many processes there were, found out that there was too many to count.
It seems i have internet processes coming from my macbook ip address from uknown sources such as ookla.com etc. Now i have downloaded spyware programs for mac which have failed to find any viruses or spyware at all.
Now i know the problem is coming from my macbook as the unwanted guests our appearing under the macbook ip address, my router is receiving the right speed so it can't be the isp?
Right now i am just wondering what to do to stop these processes using up my internet connection and potentially turning my router into a server.
    Any help would be grateful.
    Mark Lees

Yeah i have little snitch but it appears to not spot these websites, i can send you a screenie of the netstat screen
Then that would imply the only connections going out from your mac are from legitimate applications.
lots of things will engage outbound connections.
    safari
    firefox
    itunes
    spotify
and sites that you visit that have embedded video often host the video on other servers. So you would be suprised at how many socket connections you have at anyone time.
If you have little snitch look at the monitor window and it will show all the recent connections.
You could reset little snitch to default rules and then you will be prompted to allow or deny each new connection.

  • Windows 7 64 Bit Very VERY slow internet speed

I just bought two new laptops for my wife and I and we've been having terrible trouble with download speeds since taking them out the box.
We are using the exact same configuration and IP as before only our last two computers were on XP and Vista but there were no issues whatsoever. I even went and bought a new router just in case that was the problem but it made absolutely no difference, leaving
me with the conclusion its a problem with the 64 bit version of Windows 7.
Currently I cannot even watch a Youtube video because after loading the first couple of seconds, it stops loading and then after a couple of minutes there's a quick burst of speed and stops again.
I can't complete a speed test on my connection on either laptop. Normally this would take only a few seconds but the site (speedtest.net) crashes every time using windows 7.
    Setup;
    Windows 7 64Bit
    Intel i3 2310M @ 2.1Ghz
    4Gb of RAM
My IP is VirginMedia UK on a 10Mb connection (same problem wired or wireless)
As you can imagine this is very frustrating since I have just paid out over £1000 to find my browsing experience has virtually at a stand still.
Any help in this matter would be very much appreciated

I recently had the same problem after installing Windows 7 64bit.  The internet speed for some reason was really slow.  After looking for a solution I tried to flush the DNS.  It worked.
    Open start menu
type "cmd" in the search then hit enter key
when the new screen opens type:
    ipconfig /release
     hit enter and then type
    ipconfig /flushdns
    hit enter and then type
    ipconfig /renew
hit enter and the problem is solved.

  • Win 7 on bootcamp partition, very slow internet speed

    hi!
it might be an answer to my problem somewhere on this forum, but
right now i do not have the time to browse through - so ill just post my problem quick and simple.
im running windows 7 ultimate on a intel imac, via bootcamp. the issue is simple, yet pretty annoying.
in iOS, my internet speed is great, as it should be (my bandwidth is 12/12 mbit).
but in windows 7, for some reason (been like this ever since install) things are going SO slow.
i mean, watching videos on youtube is a nightmare, every 3 second at lowest quality possible, it still
has to buffer. same goes for other streaming sites/services. downloading usually does not exceed 300 kb/ps, but in
ios this could easily hit 1,5 mb/ps.
if i listen to music on say grooveshark (adjusted to lowest quality) the music stops to buffer if i load a different webpage. its that bad.
ive taken a bandwidth check in windows and in iOS, and in iOS the speed is normal, in windows its 1/10th of what it should be.
anyone know why this problem persists?
as i know of, windows 7 doesnt have any bandwidth limiting of default.
so i thought it might be a windows 7/imac hardware conflict. help?

Hi, I'm having the same problem.
    I installed win8.1(64bit) on a iMac7,1 20inch(mid 2007) using Winclone.
Everything was working fine after I downloaded some driverhelper and installed those drivers.
Yet the internet on Win8.1 is very slow, the download speed is merely 60-100kb/s .
While if I open the Mac system, the same resource can easily to beyong 2MB/s.
As I have 25Mb/10Mb connection at home.
I'm new here , don't know exactly what driver I need to fix this problem.
    Try to install boot camp.
However, I tried 5.0 / 4.0 , it all said bootcamp x64 is not supported on this computer model.
Don't know where i can download the bootcampe 3.0 to have a try ?
Or is it just too old iMac to be fixed?

  • Slow Internet Speed C50-30

I recently purchased a Lenovo C50-30 Desktop and my internet speed is very slow. I have my old computer next to it and it runs just fine on the internet (Using wireless connection). Any ideas on how to increase the internet speed for the Lenovo? Thanks

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
Are you connected to Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi? If so, disconnect the Ethernet cable or adapter and test.
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

  • A solution to slow internet on the iPhone 6?

I recently noticed an issue on Wi-Fi where my iPhone 6, on the 2.4 Ghz frequency, but not the 5 Ghz, web pages were slow to load or hung indefinitely. Sending iMessages was also slow, even if there were no attachments. From what I read, many are having similar issues on their iPhone 6’s.
I want to share something that worked for me to fix this issue: the web pages hanging made me think there might be something up with DNS server access, and I initially considered making them static on my iPhone 6 (I was using DHCP). However, as I have multiple devices connecting wirelessly, I instead decided to change my router (TP-Link TL-WDR3600) settings so that it would instead pass through to connected devices the actual IP addresses for the DNS servers (I use OpenDNS). That way I could keep each wireless device set with DHCP for DNS, yet have them using the actual IPs of both the primary and secondary DNS servers, rather than having just the single IP of my router and relying upon it to handle DNS requests.
I’m not sure if all router firmware has this capability, and I’m not sure the problem was with the router handing DNS requests, as none of my other devices were having this problem, and I wasn’t seeing it with my iPhone 6 on the 5 Ghz frequency, but regardless the slow internet on my iPhone 6 immediately went away and I haven’t seen it happen again since (knocking on wood).

    Hi silenced_one,
Please remember people reading your post only know as much as you detail in it.
ive read the posts offered here and tried the many workarounds
    What have you tried specifically?
but im still loading pages at less than dialup speed and im on 7mps dsl.
What browser are you loading pages with? Have you tried another browser? Is your DSL router configured in the way your ISP recommends (MTU, VPC settings etc)?
im using ethernet to avoid disconnecting problems but id prefer wireless with my setup if possible.
What do you mean here? Do you mean you are having disconnection problems when connecting to a wireless network? If so, what is happening and what error messages are you receiving?

  • Slow Internet Speed

For the last 2 months I have had a problem with slow broadband speed. I have tried everything to fix it here... I have the Home Hub plugged into the master socket. I have tried a different router, different cables nothing I do changes the speed.
We have had two BT Open Reach engineers come to our house to try and solve the problem no ones knows what the problem is. When they do the test everything passes. The sync speed is around 5 Mbps but we get no where near that. They rest my profile and still no difference in speed.
It's not been working since July... Each day they ring us a say they run tests.. The fault has been put though to our engineering team... Nothing changes though.

  • Can we please have a FINAL solution to slow internet in Snow Leopard?

I've read so many discussions but none of the proposed solutions work for me.
I installed Snow Leopard a few days ago and ever since internet pages take forever to load.
Before SL my internet was running perfectly. I have the same strength connectivity, my router didn't budge and I didn't even move my laptop location. I'm convinced it is SL and I am not happy that I may have to uninstall it and have wasted $30.
I also couldn't believe that there is no way to contact Apple in a way they can respond. They're just leaving the solutions up to regular users and maybe offering an update if a few million people complain.
Anyways, does anyone have a solution to Slow Leopard?

  • Slow internet speeds on Macbook - don't want to clear cache

    Hello,
Whoever can help me will go a long way with relations with my boss.
He is the only one in the office on a Macbook, and experiences slow internet spees when no-one else does. One thing to note is that he uses Sugar CRM web-based program constantly.
Clearing the cache will speed things up initially, but shortly after it slows right down again so that is not a solution that is helpful.
Looking forward to some creative responses.

Try a different DNS server .. OpenDNS
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.

  • VERY slow Internet speeds

During about the past week my internet speeds have been VERY slow, sometimes loading a 1 minute youtube video has taken upto 5 minutes, and i also have been disconnecting off the internet very frequently. We have had bt internet for about 3 years and this has never happened before. We have a BT home hub and all our computers connect to the internet wirelessly. I have spoken to a friend and he said he had the same problem this week, he said he phoned up and got sent a new hub. I am not sure if this is the problem but all advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.  I live in dundee (Scotland) if its any help.

    Geoff,
I think Angus has either a Home Hub 1.0 or 1.5 as the front screen when you access the router settings page show "My Broadband Connection" and lists the speed and all the other pieces of information on this screen. Would I be right Angus?
In terms of the slow speed issue you are facing. Please can you post the information on the Home hub screen under "My Broadband Connection" so we can see the results.
Also, the general troubleshooting steps for slow speed would involved moving the Home Hub, if not already there, to the Master/Test socket.
Pleas see the following link for information on how to do this:

You may also want to run a speed test, as Geoff suggested ecm200 did, via http://speedtester.bt.com, as the results from this test can be used by technical support to raise a fault.
I know that some people think that because they have been connected to the same socket for a certain period of time, and the connection/speed has never changed, that the socket must be Ok, but if this socket is an extension socket, the internal wiring may have degraded over time and this is the cause of the poor speed. This is why technical support always ask to go to the Master/Test socket, to prove that the fault is on the BT Network.
I reckon, at worst, you will get an engineer to visit, who will either fix the fault, or recommend that the Hub is replaced. However, the troubleshooting steps will have to be completed before you get to this stage.
    Cheers
