Possible solution to your Optical Drive failure

Hey everyone. So I've been having the same issue that it seems like everyone else has been having with their optical drive spitting out DVDs and CDs.
Well first off here are the specs of my drive:
HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:
Model: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N
Revision: AP09
Serial Number: K0078710705
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
Low Power Polling: Yes
Power Off: Yes
So it's the same as drive thats been causing lots of problems. My issues started about 5 months ago. One day my drive was able to read/write DVDs just fine but then out of the blue it stopped writing DVDs. I was a little upset but whatever right? I didn't REALLY need to write DVDs. Then it all together stopped reading DVDs that's when I got a little ticked. So then I searched the web for an answer but came up the conclusion that I needed a new drive but the problem is my warranty is over. So then I pretty much gave up. Not really wanting to pay $150 for a new drive I tried to forget that my $2000 macbook pro was crippled. Tonight though I thought about it again. I thought of how disc drives work. Inside there is a laser that reads the disc. Remember your walkman? Before the age of the ipod. It always had a tag right by the laser that said "Don't Touch." So then I thought, "maybe the laser in my disc drive is dirty." So I grabbed my can of compressed air and stuck the straw attachment into the slot. After spraying for few seconds I loaded a normal dvd in and PRESTO IT WORKS! I couldn't believe it. IT WAS DIRTY!
This might not work for you maybe there is some thing seriously wrong with the hardware or the software. But right now what do you have to lose right? Before you run off and buy a new drive try cleaning the lens with some compressed air.
BOTTOM LINE: TRY COMPRESSED AIR. It worked for me =D

my macbook pro is just over one year old, and my inernal dvdrw also stopped working with dvd disks (it still worked with cd disks).
i stuck the nozzle of my spray air into the drive slot, sprayed three times and VOILA, my drive reads and writes dvds again!
amazing and easy fix!!

    Hello guys,
Can anyone with solid experience on connecting PS3 and MBA tell me if it is possible to use PS3 optical drive with MacBook Air (2012)?
Thanks in advance for the help,

if you mean can the appletv connect to an optical drive remotely then the answer is no.

  • What are signs of optical drive failure?

I have a Matshita DVD-R UJ-825 optical drive in my iBook G4. After updating to iTunes 9.0.3, every other CD, or so, that I import into iTunes is skipping when playing back on iTunes (the CDs are in new & good condition & play fine on my CD player). I've been able to reimport the CD with success the 2nd or 3rd time. I can tell when it will be a bad import if the import speed is below 4X. I need to get import speeds of 6X to 9X+ to get a good import. Is this a sign that the optical drive is beginning to fail? Is the timing just a coincidence with it showing up after updating to 9.0.3? Appreciate any & all input.

I suppose some drives fail immediately, whereas, some times they slowly go? Is that correct?
Hard to tell for sure, but from your description it sounds like it might be on the way out. If you plan to keep the computer I would go ahead and replace it now so you can get trouble free performance. If, however, you only use the drive occasionally it may serve you for a while yet. Accessing the optical drive on the iBook G4 is a bit of a challenge, but it can be done. If you need to get someone to do it for you I used a service in my area that charges a flat fee of $75 plus parts. If you are interested, let me know.

  • Have you replaced your optical drive with a second hard disk?

    Hi guys,
I am currently thinking about replacing my optical drive in my MacBook Pro for a 256 GB SSD, as my main hard drive is getting filled up.
Have you replaced the optical drive in your computer, and what is your experience? I'm looking at either OptiBay or OWC Data Doubler. Which would you recommend?
    Thanks!

Actually I'm about ready to do this myself.
I installed a SSD in my Windows 7 desktop PC about 9 months ago and the difference is just amazing.
I bought a new Dell Latitude and got it about a week ago, very fast but not as fast as my desktop. I then ordered a modular bay hard drive enclosure to replace the optical drive and another SSD. Installed the drive I had as my boot drive, a 750GB 7200RPM drive, in the modular bay enclosure and installed the SSD as the main boot drive. System screams.
I then look at my MBP late 2011 with i7 CPU and the 5400RPM drive that comes with it. Slow comparatively.
So I've been hunting around and I think I've settled on the Optibay as it comes with a optical drive enclosure and the proper cable to connect that drive to a USB port.
I will mount the SSD in the optical bay caddy and make that my Boot drive leaving the original HDD where it is as the mounting system for it has shock absorbers. The SSD I will get willl be the 6GB type as but the main SATA port and the optical bay port are both 6GB.

  • Optical Drive Failure

I was loading Snow Leopard onto my Dad's iMac. The install did not finish since the optical drive failed. I took it to the local Mac dealer, and they replaced the optical drive. The drive still did not work. I took it back and they wanted $500 to check the logic board. That was not a good idea. Is there a way to verify their findings?
    Thanks.

    Hello RoleneF,
While it's easy to google the web for firewire drives, I believe what u need is recommendations from users on this forum WHO HAVE TRIED A PARTICULAR DRIVE, which I believe is the reason you came here in the first place.
It all depends on what you are looking for exactly: if u r looking for portable drives with firewire, there aren't that many (that I know of) besides LaCie's found here http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10985
If u r looking for a desktop alternative, OWC offers a wide range of desktop dvd burners, found here http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
u also have the option of purchasing an internal superdrive and putting it in an enclosure (purchased separately of course)... I believe OWC has those as well... a little research on their site will help for sure...
Personally, I'd go for LaCie's portable drive, I've read excellent reviews about it, but that's just me.
    Good luck!

  • Possible solution if your iPod isn't synchronizing!!!

A lot of problems mentioned here are iPods which are not properly synchronizing with iTunes.
My specific problem was that certain files couldn't be copied to my iPod Classic and that would messup my iPod.
The problem is corrupted music files. Check this by trying to copy a file from your hard drive to an external hard drive. If you get an error message than your file is corrupted and needs to be replaced by a backup or by a new download.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    DJ Sirko

You can just change the drive letter of the ipod to something not ever in use like "Z". This will do the same thing without worrying about the second computer conflicting.
There is a knowledge base article on how to change the drive letter of the ipod if you don't know how.

  • Is it possible to leave the optical drive tray open?

    Hello -
I'd like to know if there's any way to have the optical drive tray stay open when shutting down a Mac Pro (PowerPC version, running Leopard)? It's for security reasons in my office to make sure no media is left in after the computer has been shut down.
    Thank you.

AppleTV2 has no 'volume control' over optical - it either sends a Dolby Digital 5.1 stream for movies encoded with this or a stereo linear PCM signal.  AppleTV1 used to send stereo audio as 44.1 kHz 16 bit (CD quality) whatever it was originally  (MP3/AAC/AIFF/WAV), AppleTV2 mucks around and sends a DAT quality signal of 48 kHz 16 bit over optical which yoru Tv may not be able to decode.
Like Rudegar I'd consider the HD4200m as perhaps the model number - some older TVs had the same connections on teh back for a given range, just on lower specced models the connections were not actually connected/enabled.
Another consideration would be whether or not the optical port on the TV is optical out (would not work) rather than  optical in.
The lack of analogue connections on AppleTV2 is a nuisance.  Send some feedback:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
Won't help current hardware and doubtful any new design but you never know.

  • Prolonging the life of your optical drive?

I recently had to have the Superdrive on my MacBook replaced, as it had only lasted a rather woeful 7 months since I bought the computer new.
The guy at the authorised service centre gave me a tip: he said that to prolong the life of any optical drive (PC / Mac / laptop / desktop), you should leave a CD in it at all times. He seemed to think that this would protect the laser.
Is this just an old wives' tale, or does anyone here think that it could be a good idea?
I went through two optical drives on my previous Mac (a G3 Powerbook), so as I'm sure you can understand, I'm getting kind of paranoid that my new Superdrive will go wrong again, so any other tips would be most welcome!

About the only benefit I could see in doing this is that you would keep the laser covered and perhaps prevent dust build up. Most notebooks don't have slot-loading drives so a Q-tip can easily clean them... and as the MacBook does have a slot-loading drive, I can't imagine any dusty getting in there. I've lost count of how many desktop/notebook optical drives I've had over the years. I don't recall ever having one fail and I've never kept them loaded with a disk. As mentioned, I would imagine the extra wear of the drive spinning up all the time would be more likely to cause a shorter life (plus the annoying delays associated with optical disks mounting, etc).

  • Is your K model desktop internet or download slow? possible solution? RTL8188E adapter driver info

I figured I'd make this post because it may help someone else.
I just spent wayyyy to much time trying to get my computer to download anywhere near what it should. I would start at like 1Mbs and then fizzle out to like .5-.4 Mbs. Enough about me, let me tell you what I did to solve this.
I should first say: I have a Realtek RTL8188E Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC network adapter on here. I was told to update the driver to fix the problem.
I tried the link that was given on a Lenovo forum for the driver but that didn't help at all, 2 other people in that post also said it did not work. So I did some searching and found this site:
    http://www.driverscape.com/download/realtek-rtl8188e-wireless-lan-802.11n-pci-e-nic
(I am in no way affiliated with this site, it just happened to work for me)
When I downloaded the driver from here, I used it to update my network adapter.
For those who need a bit of a walk through,
Copy the location of the driver files after you download it and then,
Go to Control Panel, pull up the device manager (just search for "device" and you'll see it.) Open Network Adapter field, right click the RTL8188E... icon, select properties, under Driver tab you'll see update driver. Chose Browse my computer for driver software, this is where the copied address of the driver comes in handy, paste it in and choose next.
Now, my device shows the name: "1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter"
Good thing? Bad thing? No clue. Maybe someone who knows more than me will come on here and explain that but here is the practical info, my downloads are way faster and not fizzling out.
Speedtest.net (which i recomend if you want to see how your internet connection is performing) now has my DL clocked at 40.8 Mbs and Up at 28.8Mbs.
Again, I am not a computer expert, especially not in this particular situation. I just know I am happy with the results. I hope this saves someone the crazy amount of time and energy I put in to figuring this out.
    Good luck!
p.s. feel free to reply if this works for you as well, or if you have some kind of thoughts on this, I'll try to check back.

    My five cents.....
....bought a Thinkpad 545 a couple of weeks ago. Download speed was very slow but at that time I suspected it was Comcast's fault. After I had 3 PC's sitting on my desk (wife/daughter) the only one running at speeds UNDER 1, was my Lenovo.
Called the Lenovo Serice several times but they kept telling me that it was NOT the Thinkpad that was slow but my Internet connection....hello.....2 PC's running good at speeds of 18 - 19.....only the Lenovo is slow.....
Finally they connected me with the "special service department" {or something like that).
First of all: I could NOT understand the guy ...was from India or something. After a while I understood that he wanted money from me to look at the problem....A brand new computer.....pay money to make it run????? Very bad Serive!! He got very rude with me, too.
Then I tried Damerflinns suggestion. It worked like a charm. Thank you very much!!!!!
Just wanted to say THANK YOU!

  • A Possible Solution if your DVD/CD burner disappears from VISTA

I finally have a fix after 9 months of not being able to use my laptop with ITunes/IPod due to the program disabling the DVD/CD drives on my Vista laptop. You can try this ... if it does not work for you, you can simply restore the file.
    Search for the following file:
    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\AFS.SYS
The fix I found recommended renaming the file as a TXT file extension, but I could not get that to work, so I just deleted it, figuring that if it did anything else detrimental to my operating system after a reboot, I could just restore it out of the recycle bin. Sure enough, getting rid of AFS.SYS restored the DVD/CD drive to MY COMPUTER right away!
The file supposedly allows CD recording functionality with the following programs:
     HP Memories Disc Creator
     Liquid Audio
     Portal Player
     Oak Technology SimpliCD
     Broderbund's Print Shop version 20
so if you try to use any of those on a VISTA Windows system, you might run into a problem with CD burning because VISTA is not compatible.
Hope this helps some of you out there, I know I searched message boards for months, tried many things and nothing worked. I can't remember where I found this (Maybe on a GEAR website?) so again, maybe this will save some others some grief!
I have not yet updated to the new 8.1 ITunes ... I am still on 8.0 so hopefully that will not cause any issues!

Hey McTav - I do not know why your computer does not have the same file on it - unless it is not built quite the same way since it is not a Dell. Maybe you could contact Gear to see if removing that file will do the same for you. I know in my case I could not get support from Dell, Apple, or Microsoft...
    Good Luck!

  • Noise from Optical Drive?

    Hello All,
I have a problem with noise in my optical drive. It keeps making "seeking" noises every minute that goes by. it sound like eek eek erk erk. LOL but yeah extremely annoying especially at night. BDAqua has the same drive as me, purchased from OWC:
    TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S222L:
    Firmware Revision: SB02
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)
    Profile Path: None

    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, -RW DL, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds
Also, Another problem, it will not sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. I have set my power saving preferences to sleep the Mac after 15 minutes of inactivity. Both System Preferences and System profiler acknowledge this but the Mac just will not sleep.
    System Power Settings:
    AC Power:
    System Sleep Timer (Minutes): 15
    Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 15

    Wake On AC Change: No
    Wake On Clamshell Open: Yes
    Wake On LAN: Yes
    Wake On Modem Ring: Yes
    Hardware Configuration:
    UPS Installed: No
PS: by the way I have to manually sleep it. (pressing the power button on front of the machine, or touching the power LED on my 17 inch Studio Display with ADC.)
A little bit about my set up: I have a Power Mac G5 (specs are below), all that is connected to it is my 17 Inch LCD Apple Studio Display with ADC, I have an HP Deskjet 3520 Printer directly connected to the back of the Display via USB, and then I have a Bluetooth Aluminum Keyboard and Magic Mouse. I just got them last christmas. My Mac is connected to our Wi-Fi (NETGEAR WGR614v7) router via AirPort Extreme Card installed inside the Mac) and I have internet sharing set to share my AirPort connection via Ethernet (which is where my AirPort Extreme Base Station (802.11g) is connected) My APEBS is not using WDS, just setup like any other router, just the service is coming from the Power Mac G5 rather than a Modem. This is my make shift signal booster if you will. LOL. nothing else is connected to the Mac. no apps are open I log out (but still stay wirelessly connected to the router) and the Mac sits making noises all night long from the optical drive. Im running Mac OS X 10.5.8 If that helps. Also, if this is of any use?:
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x4E)

    Hello peoples,
@BDAqua: Yeah, It burns fine. Fast as can be. no problems with burning, erasing, formatting, reading. On any media. Ive tried all types of blank and burned Discs this drive supports (yes I have no life LOL) and everything checks out A-OK.
    A. Timleck wrote:
First of all you're NOT crazy.
    Thanks! Good to know.
And it's awesome when I logged in here to write about this problem that you're note was here - I'm >not crazy either.
Awesome. I'm glad that nobody here is a pyscho.
My G5 Quad Core does this and it's annoying as... About every 20 minutes I get this "click click >clack" as the drive is checked for media. The machine is on 24-7 and doesn't have sleep enabled at >all, save put hard drives to sleep when possible.
Sounds exactly like my Machine. Go in the System Profiler and post your optical drive specs here please? Thanks in advance.
The thing is that it did this in my dual G5 that I had right before it - so I thought it was maybe >software (it JUST did it while I was typing this - it's TAUNTING me!).
    Yeah same here my friend.
Like yourself it's actually in a place where, at night, though subtle, it wakes me up! I'm threatening to >go in there and pull the plug on the drive completely...
Tell me about it. My Power Mac G5 is right beside my bed. LOL Too lazy to leave my room to check my email and Facebook and stuff, LOL (even though I have my iPhone 3GS...) but I still like falling asleep with my iTunes on.
Would be interested to hear if you find a solution - this didn't happen on earlier G5s I had so what >gives....
Yeah I originally bought this drive for my modded eMac. But I didnt hear a peep, (probably due to the eMac being a tight all-in-one machine with so much other things PLUS it had the loudest fan in the world lol. It had two settings—On and Off—ridiculous) And yes I wuld love to find a fix. Not so much the sleeping as I like having my AirPort Extreme Base station online at all times anyway.

  • Thinkpad Edge S430 - Swapping out optical drive for HDD?

    Hi There
I just ordered myself an S430 with a 128gb SSD HDD included. I didn't see an option to replace the optical drive with a secondary HDD (e.g. a 500gb) so have the optical drive in as standard. Now, I would have rather changed this out for a secondary HDD or for a Blu-Ray drive, thinking I could do this myself once bought...Looking at other posts it looks like you can swap out the optical drive for a Blu-Ray drive, although I would preferably get a secondary drive over the Blu-Ray, but I'm hesitant over a few things:
Is this possible to do myself (swapping out for either secondary HDD or blu-ray drive) without voiding the warranty? (I got it with 2 year warranty)
Is it actually possible to do at all? (swapping out for a secondary HDD)
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Unfortunately, I have found no hard drives that are compatible for your optical bay.  I do believe the reason you can change out your optical drive is to change to a blue-ray or CD, or DVD, maybe a player or burner. But like I said, I have found no hard drive that can fit in your optical drive.  You may be able to find what I could not but I have been looking all over the web.
I know how you feel, my computer at home can not have any hard drives in the optical bay as well.
    Best regards,
    Alex

  • 2nd HDD to replace optical drive - B560

I have seen a thread here (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/2nd-hard-drive-in-a-W510/m-p/346539#M12570) of success replacing the optical drive with a 2nd HDD bay in a y560. I am wrong thinking there is not much difference between a Y560 and a B560, at least concerning the basic chasis and components layout, and a similar HDD bay should work in a B560. Has anyone with a B560 added a 2nd HDD? Many thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, the B560 would work fine IMO. I have done it on my Y550. What you want to make sure is that your optical drive is not some kind of weird micro drive. Honestly, it's probably a standard sized DVD drive, to which any adapter would work. I picked up mine on eBay for about $20.
I'm not sure what else to say... It's really easy to do.

  • Should I replace my optical drive?

Sooo after much consideration I am heavily leaning towards replacing my optical drive with another HD or SSD and was hoping for some input.
For a while I was considering getting an external HD, but I hardly EVER use my DVD drive. Also, external DVD-RW drives are generally smaller in dimensions than external HDs, logically wouldn't it be better to carry an external DVD-rw drive than an external HD?
My biggest concern is needing to burn DVDs, but I haven't actually needed to since I graduated college last year. Most of my work is in Final Cut/Maya/3DMax/After Effects/Photoshop, so the extra HD would be really lovely, but I'm just having a hard time pulling the trigger.
Are there any downsides to this operation besides losing the DVD drive? To those who have replaced your optical drive, were you happy with your decision? Is it weird having a slot in your computer that basically leads to nothing? I am a bit OCD so another thing that has me reluctant is going into a brand new expensive laptop and modifying it..
I am getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger, I just want to make 100% sure I'm making the right decision before I give it the green light.
EDIT: Also would installing a 2nd drive make it RAID0 so the performance essentially is doubled? Sorry I'm incredibly noob here trying to figure out lingo and workings of stuff that is way above my head at this time! Trying to learn!

I recently replaced my Superdrive with an additional HDD. I didn't spend too much time over the decision, I just figured that I use my HDD a lot more than I used my DVD player and I noticed that I was buying my software online via download anyway. The final straw came when I was running into big time storage issues converting video, etc. So after watching videos on YouTube and on the various sites that sell the conversion kits and reading the various discussions on the issue, I felt confident in cracking open the back of my MBP. I decided on the Momentus XT for my main drive and I relegated the Hitachi 7200rpm that came with my MBP to the media bay.
And you know what? It was pretty darn easy to do and once the new drive was installed, my Mac picked it up right away and I've never been happier. A couple of things I want to point out and this is my experience..
    1. SSD vs HDD. I personally did not see the need to spend $1000 on an SSD drive when I really needed storage. So that is your decision. Most people place the SSD in the main HDD location and use it for the OS and programs. The spare drive is used for storage, ie. iTunes, movie and video editing files, etc. I have seen some discussion that the SATA connection to the Superdrive is not as fast, but you need to check that out on your own.
    2. Battery life. I don't see any real reduction in battery life. The Hitachi, when mounted, only spins up when I need it. So, I suppose that if I was running both drives then it would impact battery life, but the same would happen if I was running the DVD for a movie or copying files so its a non-sequitur.
    3. I found a whole slew of companies selling an adaptor for the Superdrive slot, I chose this guy on ebay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220742814526&ssPageName=STRK: MEWNX:IT . For $30 bucks including shipping it was a great deal. The item fit perfectly, the holes lined up and it was the cheapest I found that wasn't coming from South Korea!
    4. Installation was very easy. If you have the dexterity to turn a screwdriver you can swap out the superdrive for the HDD. Just make sure you have the right sized screwdrivers and most important that THEY ARE MAGNETIZED! Also, make a couple of run throughs on watching the videos.
    5. I use an external DVD if I need to install something on my computer. Think about it, all you need is a 4G thumbdrive and you have effectively replaced the storage capacity of a DVD. Also, what do you find you do more, slid a DVD into your computer or plug in an external HD that you bought to store stuff on?
    6. Dont worry about voiding the warranty. Unless you spill coffee in the machine as you are trying to replace the drive, you can always pull out the drive and re-install your Superdrive before taking the computer for service.
Oh BTW, there are companies out there that will also sell you (or include it in the purchase of the Optibay adaptor) a kit that allows you to keep your Superdrive that you pull out that turns it into an external drive.
I say DO IT! In the end it's much better to have 1.5TB max storage possibility.

  • Mega PC Optical Drive Compatibility List

So you've just parted with the cash for your shiny new Mega PC barebones, now you have to choose which optical drive (CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW) you want to go inside. Of course MSI recommend you use one of their optical drives, but they would say that!  You might prefer other manufacturer's units (myself am very happy with NEC drives) so the aim of this thread is to provide as comprehensive as possible a list of drives **known** to work correctly with the Mega series, as well as pointing out drives to avoid.
If you have a drive that is not listed here, but works correctly in hifi and PC mode, or works fine with a couple of quirks, then please post below, and i'll add them into this post at a later date. Please state the manufacturer (eg NEC), model code (eg ND2510A) and drive type (CD-ROM, DVD-RW etc), and i'll make sure you get credited with the comment.
Unfortunately, I have not added some drives listed in the old thread due to not enough information being given (eg Toshiba DVD-ROM doesn't really narrow a particular model down). Comments from users are credited to them.

    MEGA 180:
Plextor PX-800A Internal IDE DVD-Writer doesn't work in HiFi mode, but works fine in PC mode.  This drive is shorter in length then the NEC ND-3550A.
NEC ND-3550A Internal IDE Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer doesn't work in HiFi mode, but works fine in PC mode.  Not much room between end of drive and power supply.
Both drives are really nosiy when playing DVD's, so much so I have to turn the volume up extra loud to drown it out, annoying.
LG GSA-4082B SUPER MULTI DVD±RW/DVD-RAM DRIVE works flawless in HiFi and PC mode.
Only down fall is its old and only 8xDVD writer.
