Possible soulotion to slow Media Center

I have been reading posts about the slowness of the media center and read one that indicated that the downloaded version from interVideo worked fine. This got me thinking about the skins. It appears on my system 2.4 gig celron it is the TransitionEffect that is using 100% of my CPU, by going into my registry using regedit I was able to turn off alot of the overheads.
This also stopped my DVD from jumping so I can now watch it from the media center.
Main keys are
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER]\Software\InterVideo\Home Theater\TransitionEffect
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER]\Software\InterVideo\Home Theater\AnimationStyle
I also turned by TV and Radio preload off.
Be aware there is also some keys under
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]\SOFTWARE\InterVideo\Home Theater
Hope this helps you too.

The other thing I have been playing around with over the last copule of days in HT on the P4 (I upgraded). By setting the remove software to one HT and the MMCIII to the other thread neither locks the other up when they are busy. I still think there are issue in the remote But I am sure that is MSI fault whit s**t programming.
I found the same to with turing off the OSD.

  • Windows media center edition on mega pc ?

    hi,
Is it possible to hae windows media center edition running on the mega pc with everything functionning like tuner, remote control within the media center ?
    Thanks,

Well if you want my opinion mega center iii disappoints quite a lot so far! Last weekend I had some time writing a test report. I have been testing the megapc just on a regular TV. Initially it worked satisfactory since I was able to change the resulution to 512x384x16bits. This resolution is convenient to read text on an ordinary PAL-TV.
I won't get in to details concerning the remote control, since often it does not work properly and many people reported that already ... Using MC-III's TV option to record from a set top box might drive you nuts, sometimes for some reason the record function falls back to TV (instead of Composite). Even worse it occurs that winxp freezes when you want to quit recording, also if you end a scheduled recording it is impossible to delete this record until the instructed recording time is over. Let's say if you schedule a program at 01:00am till 03:00am and you cancel the recording process at 01:50am you are unable to reschedule a program till 03:00am, it works when you record instantly otherwise the error "Cannot modify/running or end schedule!" appears). IF you succeeded recording video with MCIII it is a hassle to erase it again via MCIII's menu .. There's an option to delete recorded programs, but for me it didn't (and does) not work, I have to erase it manually from the standard 'My videos'-folder .
Another feature in MCIII is to put your PC in standby mode, now imagine you have scheduled a record session at 01.00am and at 11.00pm you decide to put the mega180 in stand by mode .. Using a regular video or dvd recorder would start up and records at 01.00am . megapc remains silent .  Another disappointment .. One more to end this story and it concerns viewing a DVD via MC III .. Since I have my resolution set at 512x386x16bits watching DVD's in MCIII is quite funny since people are rather stretched up ( :-) ), also lots of hickups, I could not believe my eyes and I decided to start up MediaPlayer 9 and all issues were resolved, so I was able to to watch a smooth and non bumby screen. Therefore I am really hoping that the mega180pc will be supported one day by winxp media center. Unfortunately I was not able to run the 2004 version, even after upgrading an earlier release .. The media center does install but of course the remote does not work at all .. Well I agree, it often does not work either using mega center III ;-D. Don't get me wrong, megapc is a good product but a lot of programming and adjustments need to be done.
    Here's my config: megapc180, wd250gb (8mb cache), 2x512Mb Kingston 333, AMD3000+, msi tv@master, msi burner 8a...

  • Mega 865 - MSI Media Center SLOW on Music mode (CD audio)

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with the Mega 865, when I'm playing CD audio with the Home Theatre / MSI Media Center Deluxe II application.  It seems to VERY, extremely slow.  It takes about 30 seconds for the application to respond when I directly click into the application, and it does not hardly ever respond to the remote.  When I try to close the application once it has begun playing an audio CD, it does not respond very well, usually not within 30 seconds.  When I open the task manager, the CPU usage is between 90 & 100 percent.  I looked at the system requirements for this application, and the computer has over twice the requirements, so that is not the problem at all.  I tried updating to DirectX 9.0b and Media Player 9, but that did not seem to improve performance.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Mac Mini to older HDTV as a media center...is it possible?

As the title suggests, I would like to purchase a Mac Mini and use it as a media center, hooked to my older Sony HDTV (with component inputs only). Is there such a thing as a DV to component adapter that will work with the Mac Mini?

The 2007 mini is Intel based.
You need to search for "DVI to Component transcoder." A good forum to look at is http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=824143

  • Possible Windows Media Center Conflict When Viewing .FLV FIles

I am running IE10 on Win7 and just downloaded Flashplayer 11.8.800
I verified the download via the Manage Add-ons list in IE10 and saw that Shockwave Flash Object is available.
I also verified that FP ActiveX - with the correct install date - is among the populated programs in my Uninstall list of the Control Panel.
However, in my WIN7 Default Programs details all .flv files are associated with Windows Media Center and when I try to change that association there does not appear to be a way to link the .flv files to the Flash Player
or a way to disassocaite the .flv files from Windows Media Center.
With the setup the way it is now, when I download a .flv file and try to run it,
Windows Media Center tries to run it and gives me an error that the file type or the codex that created compression may not be supported.
How do I get the .flv files to run?

I use VLC media player for downloaded FLVs  http://www.videolan.org/index.html

  • My media center M8000y no longer completes boot sequence...I turn on the desktop and sometimes the b

HP Media Center M800y, System # GG755AV#ABA, Windows Vista Ultimate, Desktop will not complete boot sequence as the Blue & white HP screen which doesn't always appear, will give options to either
a).Press F10 to enter setup or,
b). to press f11 to start recovery partition in hard drive that doesn't work when tried.
Can enter setup when blue & white HP screen appears but do not know what to look for when inside.
If I pick none of the 2 options, the screen just turns black with a horizontal line "-" blinking at the upper left hand corner of the screen. Sometimes the screen will not even show the blue & white HP screen and it just stays black.
I changed the CMOS battery and nothing happened except that now the blue & white HP screen with the 2 options appears even less when I attempt to start up... I also tried using the recovery disks to no avail...
A power surge knocked out the power in my building and the computer suddenly stopped working while streaming netflix video afterwards... Then when attempting to re-boot once power was restored, The screen showed some very wierd, almost alien fonts on the top of the black screen that almost resembled Chinese or hyrogliphics. Upon further attempts to re-boot to no avail, I'm at a loss in diagnosing the possible causes or failure modes... Can somebody help me in the right direction???
I'm leaning towards either a corrupted bios via virus, or a fried hard drive or both. If you think something else or this has happened before and anyone knows a fix, I would be eternally grateful for your guidance in resolving this problem I'm experiencing.
    Respectfully,
    Henry

I would lean more to a hard drive problem.
A quick test is to temporarily disconnect the hard drive - the system should quickly indicate it can't find the HDD, can't  boot, etc.  You should also have the option to press one of the function keys to enter system BIOS.
If when you hook the drive up again - it starts getting flaky/slow again to do anything - you've likely found your culprit.

  • How do you set up a TC as a media center and not a back up?

    Hello,
I am new to Apple products. I have a 13" Macbook Air  and a 1 TB TC. I plan on buying the Apple TV. I am trying to find out how I can use my already networked TC to be used as a media center (to store pictures, music, movies ETC) instead of only being used for the Time Machine to back up my Macbook. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks for reading and have a great day!!
    Jason

Sorry Jason.. but this is not really possible.
TC is a dumb hard disk in a router.. designed for Time Machine and laptops as a network target for the backups.
It has minimal (to say the least) functionality.. ie file protocol for network.. AFP and SMB.. that is it.. sum total.
    No media servers. no nothing.
And Apple TV is not really a media player.. it is a streamer.. it accepts a stream and displays it on a TV or through a hifi system. It is bound.. with bolts and shackles and chains to itunes. It can play itunes stuff from any computer running itunes.. TC cannot run itunes.. so as you can see.. it is merely a file store.
So here you have it.. TC.. computer.. ATV.
If you want to store itunes library on the TC you can but it is unwise.. without considering the following consequences.. it is slow to start up and fast to spin down.. making itunes have library location and streaming issues. More important in a way TC has no way to back itself up.. on the day the TC dies your iTunes library goes with it. Time Machine cannot backup network drives.. you will need to use a tool like CCC and then backup the files to an external drive plugged in where?? The MBA.. ?? In which case the whole thing is wrong way around.. put the library on the external drive and leave the TC to do what it does best.. act as a dumb backup target for TM.
Now that is in Apple world.. of course you can use a real player.. eg WD Live TV and play files from the TC.. all the smarts of course are in the WD player .. there are none in the TC.. it is simply used as SMB network drive.

  • MegaSky580 in Media Center

    Hi
I purchased a Megasky580 after seeing it reviewed on the inquirer.net.   After a few complications i finally managed getting everything working correctly in the presto PVR software that comes on the CD (on my MCE windows).   However i cannot get it to work correctly at all in MCE, after the initial scanning of the channels, i go to the guide and find that the video is running in slow motion and there is no sound at all.   Now i was thinking that this could be a codec issue, the original card PVR250 worked correctly all the time using the intervideo codecs (according to deccheck), i have tried the Megasky580 using both intervideo and the nvidia codecs and both are the same.
I also followed the links and downloaded the newest drivers before i tried it.   Anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks for this.
Removed Hauppauge WinTV analogue card. Uninstalled MSI580 / PrestoPVR. Reinstalled MSI580 / Presto PVR plus the zip update file from MSI. Finally got Presto PVR working again (slight changes to min/max screen shifting). Ran the MCE Tv setup wizard - antenna, DVB-T, no set-top box, and it finds 88 out of possible 89 channels (not worried about 89th channel!).
BUT, myTV fails to load. I get blue screen with:
    "Video error
Files needed to display video are missing or corrupt. Please restart Media Center and/or restart the computer. If the problem persists, go to Help for additional information"
I've tried trawling through microsoft help, I've already installed sp2. From MSI forums I see others experienced same problem possibly relating to codecs? (I can play dvd through MCE ok).
Nero Info tool shows I have following video codecs:
    Video Codecs
    Cinepak Codec by Radius
    Intel 4|2|0 Video V2.50
    Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2
    Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2
    Intel IYUV codec
    Microsoft RLE
    Microsoft Video 1
    Microsoft YUV
    Microsoft YUV
    Toshiba YUV Codec
    Microsoft YUV
    Microsoft H.263 Video Codec
    Microsoft H.261 Video Codec
    LEAD MCMP/MJPEG Codec (VFW)
Any ideas? Not sure how to remove/add any. Thanks again.

  • PM G5 for Media Center?

I'm probably going to get a new mac this year. My PM G5 1.6 GHz still runs fine, but isn't as fast as I like and streaming video is starting to slow down.
Is it possible to use this older mac as a media center? I've been hearing about people using mac mini's in media centers.
Right now I have AT&T U-verse, DVD recorder and an Apple TV hooked into my TV. Can my Power Mac fit in there anywhere?
    Thanks,
    mhh

It should handle it, but I think the Minis most people use for that are Intel Minis faster than your G5.
streaming video is starting to slow down.
Give this a try on that...
Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers for the Interface you're using...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Then Apply. These are safer/faster than most ISP's DNS numbers, and have been patched against DNS poisoning.
    https://www.opendns.com/homenetwork/start/device/apple-osx-tiger
I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • How can I convert the metadata tags on my mp4s to xml files so that they can be read in Windows Media Center?

I have a library with almost 3000 movies and TV shows that I have fully tagged. However, I have decided to start using Windows Media Center and it does its metadata tagging through XML files.  I wanted to know if anyone could tell me if there was a way to extract the metadata from those mp4s and convert them to a format that WMC could read?  Thanks!!!!

iTunes can make XML playlists so it might be all you need, I made a simple one file playlist and exported it from iTunes. The result is shown below. In principle I could delete the playlist and the entry from the library, as long as I don't delete the file, then later reimport the XML playlist file. I haven't tested this particular scenario, but I assume that iTunes will read all the properties as listed unless it can read some kind of tag from the file itself in which case the current value of the tag would take precedence.
What I don't know is what media center would make of this file, or what its files look like, however assuming they have a similar structure that can be decoded then it should be possible to read data from the iTunes library and write out a text file that will make sense to media centre.

  • I prefer Windows Media Center (but I would like to use Front Row)

This is a plea to Apple that they would update Front Row with some more functionalities!
I'm using my Mac mini as a HTPC and it's doing it's job absolutely great - thanks to Windows Media Center.... Awwww, I wish I didn't have to write that
Well, it's all about functionality and at that point, I have the conviction that WMC is really kicking FR's a**. I really don't get why Apple has chosen to put a media center software (don't know if I dare to call it that) in their OS which lacks of so many important functions.
One of the important things for me, in a media center software, is support for TV tuners, and guess what... Windows Media Center has this, but there's no support in Front Row.
I would also like to see more integration with iTunes, so that I can use the Remote app on my iPhone to control the music in FR and so it's possible to use the party function (also with the Remote app, cause that works really great).
This is only some of the functionalities I miss in Front Row, but I do hope that Apple will consider those so I can get rid of Windows from my machine.
    //Cheers

Best way to convey your wishes to Apple is to send them feedback.

  • WIndows XP Media Center did not install totally

    Hey guys and gals,
I had a new WinXP Media Center disc set to install into my Boot Camp. But, when installing into my new iMac flat screen all alum. computer, there is no way to eject the CD 'during' the installation of WinXP. Thus it only uses disc one for the install of XP.
One 'can' eject the CD by rebooting the computer (hold down the off switch in back) and when the screen color appears, hold down the left mouse click button. But, the Installation process 'restarts'. Thus getting 'disc two' to be installed isnt possible. (During the installation, Windows stops and says 'please install disc two and press enter when its ready, which you cannot do, so its stuck there. I finally found that hitting 'Escape' key 'continues' the process of loading WindowsXP).
So.. My question is, can Windows XP Media Center be loaded still? Or is it not possible.
By the way, I am loving this iMac. Never had one before. This is AWESOME!!! Very impressed with Leopard. Very impressed.

So you already have a Windows XP on your Mac, right ?
To my knowledge the MCE version has no update mechanism included for such a scenario.
    But I might be wrong.
What happens when you you run Windows and insert the MCE CD ?
Are you prompted with a possibility to update ?
If not, then my first assumption is correct and a complete reinstallation is your only choice.
Have a look at WinClone for a backup of your current XP installation.
Thats what I am afraid of.
    Hope not...

  • WRT610N disconnects and does not work with Vista or media center extenders like the DMA2200

Linksys and all other router manufacturers advertise the greatness of the wireless 5ghz band (especially with 802.11n), but I’m beginning to have my doubts.  It is true that the 5Ghz band is hardly being used so you'll have virtually no one to compete with.  However, the 5Ghz distance in no way compares to 2.4Ghz, and as a matter of fact, I find it to be quite terrible.  At approximately 20 feet away, both my Linksys DMA2200 and HP notebook barely get 1 bar using the 5Ghz N band with my WRT610N router.  In comparison, while using my 2.4Ghz WRT54g router, I get 5 full bars at that range, and at least 2 bars from anywhere else in my house.
I have all Linksys equipment in my house as I have been impressed with all of their 2.4Ghz in the past.  However, I’ve recently upgraded everything to dual-band N equipment and found numerous flaws in each of the new devices, plus none of them really even play well together.  My setup is: Linksys 610n router, DMA2200 media center extender, and a WUSB600N Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network Adapter for my laptop – all of which are currently using the most up-to-date firmware. Other devices include a WRE54G extender and  Nintendo Wii.
Problem  #1) The LELA software with the new N devices doesn't even recognize that my DMA2200 is a media center extender.  Using LELA, I should be able to select my media extender and allocate more bandwidth for streaming media.  However, since my extender only shows up as an “unknown network device” those options are greyed out.  I tried to manually change the device to a media center, but still no go.  I suppose you can manually allocate bandwidth in the router setup somewhere, but considering these are all Linksys products, it’s absolutely ridiculous that an option specifically incorporated in the LELA software for a Linksys Media Extender does not work!!!
Problem #2) If you are only using one system with the router, the router might actually work as intended.  For most of us though there are going to be at least 2 or more systems connected to the router (wired, wireless, or a combination of the two) such as a PS3, Wii, laptop, PC, media extender, Xbox, etc.  If that’s the case, you’re probably screwed because you WILL experience frequent dropouts… ESPECIALLY if just one those clients is a VISTA machine.   Check the Linksys forums and you will find that this seems to be a problem with all of the new Linksys routers (610N, 310N, and 110).
Here is a Microsoft article that explains the issue
       http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us
Problem #3) Because of  problem #2 I will never be able to get rid of the dropouts since my network is using one of Linksys’s media center extenders.  The DMA2200 is essentially a VISTA PC to some extent and accepts DHCP requests the same as a VISTA PC.  Since it is not really a PC though, there is no registry modification that can be done to alleviate the VISTA problem (not that the registry mod really works anyways).  So as long as I try to use my DMA2200 wirelessly with my WRT610N router, the frequent dropouts will occur and there’s nothing I can do about it.  This is REALLY TERRIBLE since the DMA2200 is specifically designed to be used with the WRT610N router in order to take advantage of the 5Ghz band and wireless N transfer rates.  You absolutely need 5Ghz wireless N to efficiently stream HDTV WIRELESSLY, but if you lose your connection every 10 minutes, it is impossible to watch any type of streaming media.
Problem #4) As mentioned already, when the “N” 5Ghz range is working on the WRT510N router, the distance sucks compared to standard 2.4Ghz G, N or mixed mode networks.  You can try to make it better by strictly using N products, disabling the 2.4ghz band all-to-gether, and using the wider 40mhz frequency, but it doesn’t really help.  The higher 5Ghz band is a more concentrated signal and therefore simply does not reach as far as the lower 2.4ghz band.  I wonder why all of these new products state that the 5Ghz range will increase your distance, when in fact it actually makes it worse?
So… basically, this router does nothing that it claims too and is basically rendered useless on any network with a VISTA machine.  This has not been addressed by any Linksys firmware updates or VISTA software updates so there is no reason to even consider using this router if you you’re using VISTA or some type of VISTA Media Center Extender such as the Linksys DMA2200.
Although, I’ve always sworn by Linksys in the past, the amount of wasted time, frustration, and horrible support has really changed my view about them.  I’ve reverted back to my old trustworthy WRT54g router and had to run cable through my house so that I wouldn’t have to box my DMA2200 extender up and let it collect dust in the attic.  It’s really disappointing that I spent all this money to buy this equipment specifically because they’re supposed to work together, but in fact they don’t.  Plus what’s the point of having top notch wireless equipment if you have to run cables in order for them to work?

I have fixed all the IP adresses to avoid the DHCP problem but I still have problems.
    I have sereval scenarioes:
    1. MC < 1Gb wire > WRT610N < 5.0n WIFI > MX
I can see HDTV on this one but it disconnects
    2. MC < 1Gb wire > WRT610N < 2.4b/g WIFI > MX
    No HDTV and disconnections
    3. MC < 2.4b/g WIFI > WRT610N < 2.4b/g WIFI > MX
No HDTV but no disconnections - but very slow and streaming like youtube
    4. MC < 100Mb wire > WRT610N < 2.4b/g WIFI > MX
No HDTV but nice picture - testing for disconnections right now - 30+ min.
    Result:
This test was very good. Stabil streaming, no disconnects for an hour. Won't support HDTV but the rest seem to work fine.
    5. MC < 100Mb wire > WRT610N < 5.0n WIFI > MX
Not tested yet - looking forward to this - might bring me HDTV.
    Result:
This gives HDTV but there is a problem with stability on the streaming but very difficult to see on the picture. Testing for disconnects - now tested for 30 min. - no disconnects.
    This looks really promissing.
I am pretty sure that the WRT610N have a problem in the switching part of the router specially when it has to switch from 1G to WIFI. I bought the WRT610N to get HDTV on WIFI and Cisco markets the DMA and WRT610N as a perfect match. But it definately have problems - i still do not understand their silence about this.
I will come back with the last results when I have them
    /John

  • Mac Mini as a "Media Center"...Anyone doing this?

I am considering purchasing a single core mini to use as a media center. If you are currently doing this, how is it workingout for you?
How is the video quality on your television while viewing pics from iPhoto?
How is the streaming of music from iTunes?
How about video? Is your home network wired or wireless?
    Thanks in advance.

I decided to take the Mini plunge to create a media center. I'm still assembling pieces, but so far it's great.
You'll want some kind of a high def monitor for the Mini, or external control via Apple Remote Desktop or VNC, because the Mini's desktop on a standard TV is just way unuseable.
iPhoto slideshows and MPEG4 videos look wonderful, and that's on my 10+ year old Sony 32" tube TV. I have a new High Def TV coming tomorrow and can't wait to see how great things look.
iTunes shared music plays just fine through the Mini. And using FrontRow to access the music collection on my main Mac enables me to see the full title and artist on the TV screen.
I hooked up a FireWire drive to handle video storage this evening, and I'm currently noticing a constant fan noise from the mini; I'll be investigating why that should be...when the I was using the Mini without the FireWire drive, the Mini's fan was completely silent.
FrontRow is a nice application; my only complaint is that when playing MPEG4 files the fast-forward, fast-reverse features are way too slow.
FrontRow remembers your place when playing a video file and gives you the option of starting from the top or resuming play the next time you access the file. However, when I moved files to external storage the previous stopping points were lost. Trying to fast forward 2.25 hours into a 3 hour video was way too slow. I ended up copying the move I wanted to watch, opening the copy in QuickTime, finding the point I wanted to watch from, deleting from the beginning to the desired point, and saving the file...THEN playing it with FrontRow.

The following instructions about  the "Code Purple" error FAILED. Error is still present.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
***PLAIN ENGLISH QUICK AND EASY FIX FOR ALL SYSTEMS****
***Windows 7 code purple or Windows Vista code purple***
With the code purple error on the screen, press shift+f10 (the shift key and the F10  key (at the top of the keyboard) at the same time) to open a little screen called a  command prompt. (So, you get a little black screen with white text that says something  about your Windows verison first and a little ways down you'll see "C:\>".   It's all  ready for you to start typing.)
Type the following line, just as you see it here...
    notepad C:\hp\bin\checkdmi\checkdmi.cmd
so it will look like this
    C:\>notepad C:\hp\bin\checkdmi\checkdmi.cmd
    Press Enter.
You will see the text for the file listed in a window using a simple text editor.
Go to the beginning of the text. Press enter to make a space. Type this...
    goto cleanup
So, whatever comes after, the first line looks like this...
    goto cleanup
Save the file and exit notepad and restart your PC. You are good to go.
