Possible Switcher -  Got some questions

I'll be honest, i use some macs at my local college, they have G5 towers that are loaded. But the thing is out of 5 machines 2 are out of commision. And one of the 2 has been repaired once already, while the 200 pc's in the room seem to hum along. I am seriously considering a mac book at the end of the year.
Second, as i use the mac, Safari in particular seems to have a tendancy to suddenly quit, which i do not have this problem running windows on my mac machine.
Thoughts and comments welcome.

I'll be honest, i use some macs at my local college,
they have G5 towers that are loaded. But the thing is
out of 5 machines 2 are out of commision. And one of
the 2 has been repaired once already, while the 200
pc's in the room seem to hum along.
Let's re-read this quote carefully, shall we? It's a little math problem: there are 5 macs in the computer room and 200 PC's. If 300 students decide to use the computers, and 200 are PC users, while 100 are mac users, how many users will there be per machine?
Yes, indeed! 1 person per PC and...20 per Mac. Even if there were only 20 Mac students they'd still be used 4x more often. And guess what? If two out of 200 PC's are broken...who's gonna notice? Well, let's be fair, you'd have to have 2 out of every 5 PC's...tell you what, let's have half go down. That's more PC's down than Macs...and yet, you'd still have 100 PC's running. So the PC room could keep humming even though HALF of them were down.
And consider this: Let's say only 10 students use Macs...but 200 use PC's. Which do you think is going to get repaired? And given that it's a PC world...which do you think the computer experts at your school know how to fix? Mac or PC?
And then there is the cost difference. How much of a discount is your school getting on those PC's as a package deal? If a PC breaks, replace it...cheap--it's part of the package deal. They're only meant to last a year or two anyway given that the seller is selling them to the school at...what? $300 each? Less? The Macs cost more because the school decided to buy only 5, not 200. Now those Macs have to last much longer, and if they break, they don't get replaced. They sit there...broken.
Do you see what I'm getting at?
Computers break. They have panic attacks, mother boards fail, disk drives die. It happens to all computers. But that computer room is more likely to fix or repair the PC's because more students use them and they're part of a cheap package deal which probably includes free repairs or replacements. They're less likely to bother with the Macs because fewer students use them and they cost a lot more to replace--possibly to repair if the school doesn't have Apple Care. So if the Macs go out of commission they stay out even if their problem is easily fixed. Why bother when there are only a handful of Mac users in the whole school?
In short...you haven't got a fair comparison there. You really need to talk to a school which runs Macs and only Macs. But I'll tell you this--there are research labs that use only Macs. And movie studios. And banks. I kinda think they wouldn't use them if they weren't reliable. Schools have to take what they can get...but labs and studios and banks can buy what they want. And Macs are often what they buy.
Speaking from personal experience, I've found that Macs have an amazingly good track record. There are clamshell ibooks still being used, and on average, a Mac Laptop will last you 4-6 years. A desktop longer. They are well built and reliable, and have a good resale value. And the Mac OS is not (not yet at least) in need of protection from viruses. I have hopes that one day, you'll walk into that computer lab and they'll tell you that all the PC's are down because of a virus.
Only the Macs will be up and running.

  • New User to the IPhone Family got some questions

    Hey guys,
    Well the IPhone4 is my first smart phone and I will have to say I love the thing. Except I'm experiencing some weird issues. First is the proximity sensor now I have done a lot of research and people are saying that there could be a fix for that when a update comes out. Is that correct to assume that?
    Also, im having a weird reception issue. I heard about the death grip problems so I got a case to solve the issues. But with the case off sitting on a desk I get 5 bars when I pick it up in my hand to make a call I now will have 3 bars. When I put the case on and leave it on the desk I get 4 bars and when I pick it up in my hand to make a call now i get 2 bars. I have yet to drop a call and hold it like i normally would im not doing the death grip and trying to make it drop as much signal as possible. Should there be this much of a difference with and without a case? I also want to keep the case on since im always afraid of dropping the thing.
    Also, as a side note on the reception issue is there a way to make it show the dBm instead of the bars so i can actually see how much signal im loosing?
    Thanks guys,
    Marc

    Its not unusable i only hit speaker phone or mute occasionally. It almost seems to be an intermittent problem with the sensor.
    I've had the sensor problem one time.
    In looking back I realized three things, first the sensor is above the ear 'speaker'; two the sensor is slightly less sensitive than the one on my iPhone 3GS; and three I sometimes have a tendency to move the voice mic closer to my mouth--this rotates the sensor away from my head. With it's decreased sensitivity and its location being farther up the phone this action will cause the sensor to 'trip' and the phone to 'think' I've moved it away from my head and turn the display back on. As long as I keep the earpiece next to my ear I never have a problem.
    I have two iPhone 4 units and they both behave this way and I can see where people who tend to move the phone around a lot while speaking could have real difficulties. The sensor 'sensitivity' really needs to be increased. Lets hope a software change can modify the sensitivity.

  • I've got some questions about Satellite Pro L300

    1.) How could I Update my Bios? I find the zip- File but no further Information how it works?
    2.) I want to update for more memory. 2GB are less for fast working. Where could I find Informations about the memory controller- e.g. Voltage, Timings... for pass new memory of 4GB.
    3.) My PSSD1E shows me in Windows7 - Systems Hardware one empty SATA- Controller.
    Is it possible to take it optional for an outgoing connection- eg SATA-OUT for extrenal device?
    Sorry for my worst english.

    Satellite Pro L300 is offered with several different hardware configurations. I dont know which one do you have and there is no sense to discuss about this without exact notebook info.
    If you want to have general conversation here than dont claim about this forum.
    To get some precise answers inform us about exact notebook model.
    One more time:
    1
    For all new notebook models Toshiba offers Win update only. That means BIOS update can be done under running operating system. For more details check Toshiba document.
    2
    What you need is just part number of compatible RAM modules. All other information is not so relevant for you. If you want to get this info post exact notebook model.
    You can test what you want but fact is that Toshiba offers list of compatible RAMs you can use with your notebook. All listed RAMs are tested. Other way you can visit KINGSTON page to check their list of compatible models for different Toshiba notebook models. Kingston offers high quality products and all listed RAMs are tested too.
    Who knows which RAMs you have used for your tests? Maybe some cheap no-name products. Many people have used such RAMs and at the end nothing worked.
    3
    Why you complicate the whole situation? For external devices you have available ports. For internal device you have ports on the motherboard. End of the story.

  • Preparing my first cisco sa520. Got some questions.

    Hello,
    We recently made an order on a sa520 and consider I have little networking experience i thought i would prepare myself as much as possible.
    Let me explain the setup i plan to run:
    Our ISP provides 5 static ipadresses.
    isp ->
    ipadresses (77.40.xx.190)
    (77.40.xx.191)
    (77.40.xx.192)
    (77.40.xx.193)
    (77.40.xx.194)
    Router ->
    Servers:The serveres should recieve a local ip aswell as a IP on the outside so others can reach it(ip forward)
    Example: Server local ip is 192.168.1.99 but can also be reached on  77.40.xx.190 by others that is not on our localnet.
    server1:192.168.1.100 -> 77.40.xx.191
    server2:192.168.1.101 -> 77.40.xx.192
    server3:192.168.1.102 -> 77.40.xx.193
    server4:192.168.1.103 -> 77.40.xx.194
    Regular desktop computers on the network should have one external IP but different IP on the local network. I plan to do this with DHCP
    Computer1:192.168.1.98 -> 77.40.xx.190
    Computer2:192.168.1.97 -> 77.40.xx.190
    Computer3:192.168.1.96 -> 77.40.xx.190
    Computer4:192.168.1.95 -> 77.40.xx.190
    Computer5:192.168.1.94 -> 77.40.xx.190
    Computer6:192.168.1.93 -> 77.40.xx.190
    I have read the manual and tried to find the information i need so i get put this together as fast as possible when i recieve the router.
    Is there a way to give computersa static internal IP based on theire MAC adress?
    Example:
    The computer with the following mac adress(00-0C-F1-56-98-AD)
    should always get 192.168.1.50 as a local ip adress?
    If that works, can i then use the following manual example?
    Im sorry for im a bit unclear here. I will elaborate if something is unclear.

    Can you upgrade to more RAM,
    Yes.Max is 16GB officially, 32GB from third parties
    may replacing it with DDR3 chips?
    NO, and if you did, it would run no faster. Requires ECC DIMMs
    If its got iLife now would that mean it's got new OS software.
    10.6 only costs US$39. This should not swing the deal.
    Is this a substantial / powerful editor and will it be a good starter Mac.
    The seller is asking $1450
    That Mac geekbenches at about 5142
    a 2009 or later Mac will nearly double that, viz:
    2.66 Quad at 8216 Refurb from Apple at US$2039 plus tax shipped free 1yr Wty
    2.8 Quad at 8360 Refurb from Apple at US$2119 plus tax shipped free 1yr Wty
    the slowest 2009 or later Mac will run with better access to memory above 4GB/Application, takes up to 32GB in the Quad, and uses cooler-running unbuffered DIMMs
    Apple Certified Refurb (availability will vary): Mac Pro
    For me, an important issue would be whether you get the actual sale of the PhotoShop CS4 Package. If you get the discs, and the previous owner does not retain a copy OR upgrade, (and will tell that to Adobe) you own the software. If not, you "borrowed" it, and cannot use it for business purposes without putting your business at risk.

  • Thinking of switching, have some questions

    Howdy,
    I'm looking at switching ISPs because I find my upload to be far too low. I'm in a standard broadband area about 1 mile from the exchange. My connection is stable and I get very good download speeds (between 700-900 kb/s isn't uncommon), but my upload is horrible (40kb/s on a good day). I spoke to my current provider Eclipse about it and they say as a BT wholesaler they cap upload speeds and obviously I find this unacceptable so I'm looking to move away from them. I spoke to an ex BT employee friend of mine who says BT doesn't cap uploads any more and have no "fair usage policy", so I'm here on a fact finding adventure.
    Does BT cap the upload speed of its ADSL users? I want to stream myself playing computer games and 40kb/s just isn't enough to do that.
    Is there really no fair usage policy? Can I download as much as I want 24/7 if thats what I desire to do, without any download speed capping being put on me or being kicked off the service?
    Must I use a BT home hub or whatever the latest name for it is? I'm technical enough to be able to set up a router and would much prefer to be using my own hardware than the ISP provided stuff.

    Hi SpaceCrab,
    Not sure about a fair usage policy but BT will throttle speed (not cap) for P2P during what it defines as peak hours even on the unlimited packages - if this is what you want to do then you need to read some other threads about how much this affects the users. Other than that, the unlimited bundles are exactly that with the speed dependant on your line.
    On the limited packages BT will allow a small amount of 'over use' but if this is every month or by too much then you will be charged but not capped on use. This will be total data throughput (upload + download), and again P2P speeds will be throttled in peak times.
    With regards to upload speeds - not sure about this. I don't think you'll get faster than about 1Mbps on ADSL, but probably closer to 0.7 or 0.8Mbps, and theoretical max of 10Mbps for infinity1 and 20Mbps for infinity 2.
    You don't need to use a homehub - many users on this forum use others (TP Link seems to be a preferred supply). Personally I have a BT hub3 and can get wireless all around my home without problems (large sprawling bungalow with thick walls and lots of RSJ's).
    regards,
    Alan

  • Hi, i got some question about arrays.

    My question is how do i auto increase the array size for theList[0] to store the over time if the user enter more than 1 employee.
    static void showPayInfo(int num1 , int num2)
              for(int coloum = 1 ; coloum <= num2 ; coloum++)
                   System.out.print("Enter employee's over time  $: ");
                   ot = CspInput.readDouble();
                   Double = ot;
                   getDouble(Double);
    static double ot , Double;
         static void getDouble(double Double)
              double[] theList = new double[2];
              theList[0] = ot;
         public static void main(String[] args)
              int a;
              System.out.print("How many employees : " );
              a = CspInput.readInt();
              showPayInfo(1,a);

    how to create the list?
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    class testArrayList {
       public static void main(String[] args) {
         ArrayList<String> list1 = new ArrayList<String>();

  • Got some questions!

    So I was an idiot and bought my 3G when it first came out, I paid $400 for the 8gb.
    I didn't get a discount price, so is it possible I might get the discount price now? Went into local AT&T and they said I might get it which confused me.

    You can check your upgrade eligibility by logging in to your AT&T account via AT&T's website.
    If you didn't qualify for AT&T's upgrade or fully subsidized price with the iPhone 3G a year ago, this means you were using another phone at the time that was fully subsidized by AT&T. How long before you purchased your iPhone 3G did you purchase the phone you were using at the time that was subsidized by AT&T? If that was 18 months ago or so, you should qualify for AT&T's upgrade or fully subsidized price with the iPhone 3GS.

  • Opening my own plan! I got some questions. please help!

    Hi, I'm 18 and going monday to open my own plan at the Apple Store and since i have no credit and since i'll have to pay a deposit if the Apple store would be able to do that? Also, does anyone know how much the deposit might be? Will they let me have a co signer for the account?

    You would probably be better off going over to an ATT store and have them do the preapproval process to see how much of a deposit you will need to provide. Cell phone accounts do not have co-signers. If you want it to be your account, it has to be in your name. Otherwise, you would have to be added to someone else's account and it wouldn't be your account.

  • Tried to buy an iphone online. Lack of credit history.  Got some questions.

    Hey, just tried to buy an iphone online, but cause of lack of credit history I had to pay a $100 deposit and pick it up at my local store. Does any of you know if I need to go and pick it up in person or if I could send my brother to pick it up and pay the $100 deposit, as long as I order it online in advance. Kind of on a busy schedule for the moment .

    Call the local store and ask. Most likely, you'll need to pick it up yourself, as there will probably be a signature required for the contract.

  • Some question about Toshiab reocvery disk for Satellite P300-133

    Hello guys ,
    I got some questions about unpleasant recovery surprises :
    *1)* I just made recovery DVD using Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator and it initially asked for 2 DVDs - but when the first one was done it didn`t require a second blanc DVD . Is it possible all system files of Windows Vista to be written on 1 DVD ?
    *2)* Could I reinstall Windows Vista using the HDD Recovery option ( by pressing F8 ) without using recovery DVD ?
    *3)* Which HDD partitions`ll be formatted ( just system C: or both C: and E: ) using HDD recovery ?
    *4)* What is recovery DVD - Image of the hard drives or Vista installation files ?
    Its pretty bad idea not to include OS on DVD when I have paid for it.
    Thanks for all the problems to Toshiba :(

    1. I think the recovery disk creator means 2 CDs. I have a Portege M700 with Windows Vista and one DVD too. I recovered it and after this I have a clean Vista installation with all drivers and tools from Toshiba. Nothing is missing.
    2. Yes, you can reinstall Vista using the HDD Recovery option when you press F8 at startup. You dont need the recovery DVD but you should create one when your HDD get some errors or something else. If you need a new Recovery DVD, you have pay for one.
    3. The complete HDD and partitions will be formatted, so backup your data first on a DVD, external HDD, USB stick or something else.
    After the reinstallation you have the factory settings.
    4. The recovery DVD is an image of the HDD about the factory settings. If you make a recovery, there are all drivers and tools already installed. Of course on the disk are the installations files of Vista, but you can only use this DVD on your Satellite P300. The disk can not be used on an other Satellite or on a PC.
    When you have more questions, have a look in the user manual. There are a many in formations about the recovery. Its in chapter 3.

  • BDB XML + PHP, some questions

    Hello, nice to be there...
    I've got some questions...
    Now, im writing application in PHP and using the Berkeley DB XML.
    I wrote some code, but i cant find the documentation to using Berkeley DB XML in PHP.
    My code are look that, some comments to understanting...
    <?php
    // Version of BDBXML
    print(dbxml_version());
    echo "<br/>";
    $con_name="container.dbdbxml";
    // Initialize XmlManager
    $mgr = new XmlManager();
    if($mgr->existsContainer($con_name)) $mgr->removeContainer($con_name);
    * Container location: C:/Documents and Settings/UserName/
    $con = $mgr->createContainer($con_name);
    // Opening container
    $mgr->openContainer($con_name);
    // Adding XML documents
    $con->putDocument(1, "<base><element1>String text</element1><element2>Integer</element2></base>");
    $con->putDocument(2, "<base><element1>String text 2</element1><element2>Integer 2</element2></base>");
    // Iteriation adding documents
    $iter = 3;
    for($i=0;$i<20;$i++) {
    $con->putDocument($iter, "<base><element1>String text ".$iter."</element1><element2>Integer ".$iter."</element2></base>");
    ++$iter;
    // Documents the container
    $res = $con->getAllDocuments();
    $res->reset();
    // Couting the elements
    $count = $con->getNumDocuments(); echo "Numbers of count - documents: ".$count."<br/>";
    // Listing the resultset using getAllDocuments
    while($res->hasNext()) {
    $value = $res->next();
    $doc = $value->asDocument();
    print $doc->getName()." = ".$value->asString()."<br/>";
    // Listing the result set using query,
    $qc = $mgr->createQueryContext();
    $qc->setDefaultCollection($con_name);
    $query="collection(\"container.dbdbxml\")";
    $res2 = $mgr->query($query);
    // Size of result set
    $size = $res2->size(); echo "Size of resultset: ".$size."<br/>";
    $res2->reset();
    while($res2->hasNext()) {
    $value = $res2->next();
    $doc = $value->asDocument();
    print $doc->getName()." = ".$value->asString()."<br/>";
    ?>
    Now, I want to know those things:
    *1. Can I create the Container which autoincrement names the files? Example: putDocuments(AutoIncrementname,FileDocument);*
    Can I increment that in the container?
    *2. How I can create relation with containers?*
    For example:
    Container1 -> Document1 [  <xml id="1"><name>Something</name></xml>  ]
    Container2 -> ExtraDocument1 [ <base> <id>1</id> <names>Pre Name</names><relation> *" Here is relation to Container1 @ id "* </relation></base> ]
    *3. Where I can find the classes for using in PHP?*
    Thank You for answers and Really Sorry For My Bad English!

    Hi,
    I'm not using PHP, but probably some ideas would be helpful:
    1) In Java there is a XmlDocumentConfig class and its method setGenerateName(boolean). If you set it to true and provide a XmlDocumentConfig object to a putDocument() method, then DB XML will generate names for you with default prefix 'dbxml_' and the incremental numeric id (if I remember correctly), but the incremental numeric id is not guaranteed by DB XML, only that the document name will be an unique value (at least according to the documentation). You can change this prefix by providing a name of XmlDocument object that you are trying to put. Then the final name of a document will be "<your_doc_name>_id".
    2) It depends what you mean by relation? Why don't just use the name of a container?
    3) All that I was able to find by quick googling is http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/berkeley-db/pdf/building-php-applications-with-db-xml.pdf

    Hi All Masters,
    I'm a beginner of CS3 and a mac user, here I got a question looking for some help.
    Does anyone know there's a work for editing the photo to painting styles such as watercolor painting, oil painting, pastel drawing, colored pencil or pencil sketching in Adobe serials ?
    If not, does anyone know any software offering these features,

    The best overall art styles plugin for PS is probably AlienSkin's SnapArt. I'd say their filters are a cut above Photoshop's which are old and have never been updated.
    http://www.alienskin.com/snapart/snapart_examples.aspx
    That being said, the best painterly interpretations of photographs I've ever seen are done with Painter.
    http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1166553885783#tabview=tab0
    There is a basic version sort of like Photoshop Elements which is still better than Photoshop for artistically rendering photos into 'paintings.'
