Possible to bypass tape and capture live events in FCP via Firewire?

I was thinking to buy a Canon XH-A1E or similar HDV camera. I was wondering if it is possible to run a firewire from the camera during a live event to a laptop running FCP in capture mode and capture the footage to FCP as it is being shot.
Thanks.

If the computer crashed, I believe you would lose the file currently being captured into. In much the same way as if you were to prematurely stop a copy process from one disk to another, it would simply disappear.
At any rate, if the file did survive it would most likely be unusable because the directory entry would be incomplete.

  • Multicast Show and Share live event from TCS

    Hi
I have a deployment with DMM, SnS, and TCS and C90 Telepresence codec.
The TCS is sending the live stream to the SnS server. The question is if it is possible to multicast that live event to the SnS clients, or is unicast the only option here?
If unicast is the only option with the current deployment, is it possible to make a multicast stream with a different deployment?
I would appriciate any thoughts on this.
    Regards,
    Ola Dallokken

Hi, yes you can use mutlicast to do this(but as Gabriel says its not SNS tat streams it, it is merely a container looking at the raw stream from the TCS or wherever you choose to pull it from) but its a complete waste of time IF your network isnt setup for Multicast AND if you have WAN sites running slow links...TCS uses Microsoft Windows Media Server for Uni/multi and is inherently TERRIBLE in sending multicast traffic..! If you have wireshark have a look for yourself..unicast it can deal with and it will send a nice consistent stream but Multicast bursts all over the shop(so a 500k stream can burst to 2mb..which is not a good thing if yhou know about routing congestion etc etc)...took me months of workng out the root cause of the issue and to eventually get Cisco to fess up about it and say 'yes' its an issue. Its really a Microsoft issue and unfortunately thats what Cisco's TCS platform sits on....:).
Forget reading he 'standard' Cisco blurb as it will say try this and try that, tweak this and tweak that but in the end you just cant use it (unless as i say your on a LAN or your WAN has big links and can deal with the overheads!) also unless you have a TAC engineer who has actually deployed this and not just read the manual they wont having wokring knowledge of the issue either. It took me a long time to find someone at Cisco who actually did know the issue and would actually admit it was a issue..I guess thats why the developed ECDS. Now thats a good product. But as usual not cheap at all.
Thats why Cisco talk about 'Wowza'..!(or atleast they use it as an example in thier blurb for streaming and not the TCS) As it can deal with multicast fine BUT the catch is its not supported by Cisco...:)...the only REAL solution is to use a content delivery system like Cisco ECDS. Believe me i have spent months going through this with TAC Engineers and i have the current ' Cisco Expert' in this field who has helped me alot with this. Its a very sad fact to find out 'after' the fact.
Also the new SNS will be very different so will lend itself to ECDS in the long run anywa so all this we are discussing becomes a mute point...
Hope this helps.  If you need any assistance apart from the TAC let me know as i have just spent a fair while deploying this myself and working out 'ALL' the non documented issues, of which there seem to be alot. Once its in it seems to work ok though.

  • Show and share & live event module problem

    Hello everyone
recently i've installed cisco show and share , also with live event module..    I need to run live event without DME(digital media encoder), i need to run "NON-Dme live event"  .
simply i need to attach my web cam to my live streaming event? is it possible?
There is a field "Video URL" but i dont know exactly how to  use it..
    thanks advanced

    Hi Temur,
It's true that the Show and Share only supports either WMV or Flash streams as input. Therefore, you need to make sure that the camera you are using has that capability.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you of any camera that works directly, because I don't know of any. Normally, for our lab tests, we use either a DME or a Windows Media server to generate the live streams.
Anyway, I would recommend you to have a look at the link below for a list of the supported bitrates and video dimensions.

  • Shoot direct to QuickTime Pro vs. typical DV tape and capture

I own and run a harmonica instruction website. I'm going to add instructional video to the mostly text based lessons on the site. I have a Canon GL1, G5 Dual 2.3, FCP, and I'm shooting with an 3 point lighting setup in my office/studio.
I can turn the camera on, setup the lights, and record direct to QuickTime Pro in it's Device Native mode. Will the quality ultimately be the same as if I record to a DV tape and then capture to FCP? It's certainly faster going direct to QT PRO, but I do have a built-in tape backup system by recording first with the GL1 and I don't want to sacrifice quality if that's the case.
    Thanks for your help,
    Dave Gage
    http://www.harmonicalessons.com

I have an XL1s and have been forced to use the direct capture via QTpro (due to a broken tape mechanism) and I must say, it works great. It captures as DV - same quality as going to tape; however once it is done recording, you must export as a dv stream in order to get the file to be recognized by FCP. I have yet to see any difference between this method and capturing to tape, but then again, I have no choice. If you have the extra hard disk space to spare, I recommend avoiding tape, but it's up to you.
By the way, does anyone know why FCP doesn't recognize the raw capture files? It uses the DV codec to capture in QT, so why does it not work?

  • I have just upgraded from the old G5 to a new one, however I can't log and capture on the newest FCPs off my Sony Z1.. please help, deadline coming soon

I have recently just upgraded from my old white powerpc G5 which did not allow me to edit in HD and I had to down convert all my footage to edit in DV. I have  bought the newest FCP studio, and I had to order a new firewire as my new desktop does not take the old one that I had before. The new firewire that I have which is the only one that fits into my iMac from my sony Z1 is a Firewire IEEE1394-B (800) 9 pin to 4 pin .
My Mac : Processor- 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
                   Memory- 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
All my settings are set to HD and the ilink convert is off, and VCR is set to auto. Why is it not reading my Z1???
Please someone help me, i have been using FCP for years now and have not come across this problem before...

camera not recognised in system profiler just says maximum speed up to 800mb/sec
still says "unable to locate the following external devices:
HDV (1440x1080) 50i" in FCP when i try easy setup
Try a different cable first ... it might be a connection problem
    VCR HDV/DV- Auto
    Component- 1080i/576i
    i.link convert- off
    down convert letter box
    A/V-DV OUT- off
Bit of guesswork here - haven't used a Sony in a while - but try these:
    • HDV/DV to HDV
    • downconvert off/none?

  • Exporting to tape and capturing

I notice that premiere pro cs4 when i am capturing 2 hours video or exporting to tape, freeze often.
i open my task manager and i saw that memory is always increasing (consuming 3,4 gb, when exporting 1 hour and ten minutes) so i have only 2 gb of ram, when it passes the limit, it stop responding.
if it is a short clip and dont pass the 2 gb limit, it´s ok. I dont know where is the problem, in PP CS3 no problem...
    I forgot...
My system is Core duo e 8200
    2 hard drives 7.200 rpm
    windows xp 32 bit
    thanks

Actually, I think that it might be the other way around. We understand your post, but I do not think that you understand Harm's. What he has provided are several articles on troubleshooting, that will either fix your situation, or will rule out certain things as the likely causes. At the bottom of the article linked to, you have a list of questions. It is the answers to these, plus what you tried from the troubleshooting guides, and the results, that will help us understand your problem better. It's the "problem," and not the post, that we need an understanding of.
With 2GB of RAM, and you observing a "ceiling" on RAM use, the first thing that I'd do would be to go to 4GB. RAM is cheap. You will want to match your existing RAM in every aspect, to the new RAM. If this is not possible, because of availability, or how your MoBo's memory slots are configured, then just go with 4GB of new RAM. You will not quite be able to use 100% of that 4GB, but enough that it could make a difference.
Good luck, and please report back with the answers to the 16 questions, plus what helped, or did not help, from the troubleshooting articles.

  • Internet sharing: iMac and G4 PPC Dual Mirror Door via firewire, fire sharing works fine with this set up now need internet sharing

I have already set up file sharing thanks to a query last year, now I need to set up internet sharing, I am using a firewire connection and my ISP has confirmed that their should be not problem in internet sharing between my iMac and my G4 PPC Dual Mirror door but after trying different combinations in the sharing set up I am still drawing a blank on this connection, any help would be appreciated

You have set up file sharing by firewire, right? Now you want to share your iMac's Internet connection with the G4. Does the G4 have an Airport wireless card? If so, set it up that way in System Prefs under Internet Sharing. If the G4 doesn't have an Airport card then you'll need to do it by Ethernet, as in this article http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_share_your_wireless_internet_connectio n_ethernet. But if you do it by Ethernet then your iMac would need to be connected to your modem wirelessly, not by Ethernet, b/c you need the iMac Ethernet port for the connection to the G4. Hope this makes sense.

  • Capturing live feed to disk?

How do you capture video to hard disk via firewire from a camera not generating a timecode. I know I've done it before. I used to edit a news web bulletin and we would pipe the feed right into the edit suite and capture to the drives instead of to tape. However I can't seem to figure out how to do it anymore with FCP 5.0.4. I just want to be able to record a few minutes footage at my desk via firewire without using tape.
Is there a way of generating a timecode internally to enable this?
Does the fact that Quicktime doesn't want to record from my XM2 have any bearing on this?
    Thanks!

Then give da man some POINTS!!!

  • Personalized button is not Capturing any event

    Hi All,
I have personalized my page button bar on the seeded page and added a custom button.
But when i click on the Button..nothing is happening. its not submitting the page also.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Bharat

    Hi Bharat ,
If you have already created a button then from personalization you can attach the event for the button and capture the event through CO extension .
    or
While creating a button from personalization there should a property to set event ( Fire action / Partial fire action ) , just set the event
and capture them through a java code .
Let me know if its not clear

  • Capturing HDV Into ProRes 422 (LT) Via FireWire

I read this fine tutorial on Moviola on the technique of Capturing HDV Into ProRes Via FireWire.
    http://moviola.com/hdv_prores
Since you can choose ProRes 422 (LT) as an option in the Log and Transfer window, I was wondering if there is a way to capture HDV to ProRes 422 (LT) via firewire like in the above mentioned article.
I tried creating a custom capture setting in the AV Settings, but ProRes 422 (LT) was not available as an option, only ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 (HQ). And those settings cannot be edited or duplicated (grayed out).
I don’t know why ProRes 422 (LT) is available in the Log and Transfer window but not in the AV Settings window. Maybe it will become available in an update.
In the meantime, does anyone know a way to get around this? Maybe modifying an FCP file somewhere?
    Thanks,
    ======
    Richard

HDV is recorded to tape inside of the camera as digital information. Component coming out of the camera is analog. The camera is performing the first conversion D/A, from HDV (digital) to component out (analog).
Component going into the ioHD is analog. The ioHD then converts via its hardware to Prores (any flavor), which is digital. The ioHD has to convert the analog from the component outs of my camera to digital for use in FCP. FCP only uses digital video.
You said "The IOHD internally converts to ProRes.." converts to ProRes is the second A/D conversion.
So the path is D/A/D. I count that as two conversions, camera D/A as one the ioHD A/D as two.
I don't want to unnecessarily convert from digital to analog to digital which is why I don't use the ioHD to convert from HDV to Prores (any flavor).
Unfortunately I don't have any digital outs for this camera, neither HDMI or HD SDI.
I believe capturing and converting HDV to ProRes via firewire in FCP doesn't have this D/A/D conversion which is why I'd like to be able to capture HDV to ProRes LT via firewire in FCP and stay digital all the way, with no analog conversions.
I use the ioHD for all of my analog to digital conversions. It's a great box from a great company.
    Thanks,

  • Capturing Via Firewire & Decklink

If I am capturing footage from my camera into fcp via firewire and I choose a capture preset from my Black Magic Decklink card, am I capturing via the card? Or do I have to be plugged in directly to the card using the SDI? I realize that the card lets you capture in some ways via the firewire but does that go for all of them? (10 bit uncompressed?? etc..)

The sales guy at the Cow said that they ship to your location and have had few issues.
A downloadable version is being worked on, but a few details still need to be ironed out....technical details like ensuring single downloads only and stuff like that.

  • Live capture with FCE 4 and Canon HV20 - End of Tape when capture in HD

I have a Canon HV20 HiDef video camera that was given to me to record an event. I want to try and avoid using the tapes if possible and capture the video directly into my MacBook Pro using FCE 4.
If I try and capture video when the camera is set to HD output, the capture screen comes up, I can see the image from the camera on the FCE4 screen for a split second, then I get a message indicating the end of tape has been encountered. (The tape isn't even being used and is no where near the end anyway).
If I change the camera to DV output, I can change the FCE4 Easy Setup to simple DV control and it works fine to capture live, except that it is no longer in HD. I get no error message about the tape end being hit.
I am unable to find any Easy Setup configuration that will allow me to record live. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Play your tape forward to a position where there is continuous Timecode and try again.
As Ian suggests the correct _AIC Easy Setup_ is the only way to get HDV in to your Mac via FCE.
Note: Your camera must be set to output HDV assuming it recorded HDV.

  • What for a live event capture and edition ?

    Hi there,
What software is best for a live event capture and edition ? (for an instant public feedback) a one with the ability to be controlled by a 2-octave midi keyboard.
Can FCP do that ? even partly ?
The idea is to be able to do the same then tv shows (live cuts and effect layers)
    thanks,
    Ionel

FCP is a professional non-linear editing application ... not a live event playback device.
If you need a very fast turnaround editing facility you can look at FCP coupled with something like Picture Ready from Gallery, you can download a demo to test
if you're looking at doing a 2 camera live cut/switch then you can consider a dual decklink I/O solution and On-Air 2.0

  • Current Time code field and "Capture Now has reached the end of tape......"

Hi I just got my new iMac and I have lots of space. When I open up the Final Cut Pro and press the capture now it gives me the notice that it had reached the end of tape, but I haven't reached the end. I have vhs in the VCR machine and it is connected through the digital device. Not only that but my current timecode field is always running and I can't stop it. Also I used the uncontrollable device and when the tape has reached the end I tried to escape but it seizes up and I lost my capture. what shall I do?

Yeah, I was just thinking about that. I'm doing this on an iMac.
What's going on with Capture Now? I know staying digital would be best. But I'm kinda doing this project to give myself some hands-on time with FCP to get familiar with it. I'd like to capture this stuff through the Log And Capture GUI if I can. Sooner or later, I'll need to do it with something else (possibly an old VHS tape) where I won't have the option of staying digital.
    Anybody?
