Possible to capture with separate audio input?

I'd like to move from using a tricaster to capturing live audio and video directly into premiere. I understand how to capture video, but my question is about using a different audio input for the video, rather than camera audio. i have a microphone connected to the computer through a USB XLR adapter box, and that's the mic i'd like to use for the video i'm capturing. is there any way to do this with premiere, or will i have to record that audio track separately, then bring it into premiere, sync it, etc? it would be great to be able to do this all at once.

Signal for A/V capture comes into Premiere via IEEE 1394 (Firewire),
and the audio and video are already combined.
You might be able to find a way to use the inputs on your deck or
camera for connecting your mic, and send that audio via Firewire
to Premiere along with the video, but that would be a function
of your deck... not Premiere.
...will i have to record that audio track separately, then bring it into premiere, sync it, etc? it would be great to be able to do this all at once.
Yeah... it's not the end of the world (it's a standard practice) but,

  • Isight with another audio input?

I want to record a video with isight but with another audio input other than the built in microphone. I have tried changing the input in preferences - sound - input but that doesnt seem to apply with the audio in photo booth.

    (1) Yes, for many common problems, location really does matter, although I think not for this one.
    (2) Photo Booth is such a simple fun app that it offers few configuration options, although the latest version (Photo Booth 3.x) adds the ability to choose among connected cameras. However, there is still no menu choice that allows you to select among microphones. The only way I know to change mics is to change the system microphone in your Mac's System Preferences... > Sound > Input like you tried to do.
You do not say what sound input you want to use instead of your MacBook's internal microphone. I have tested my Photo Booth with my Apple LED Display, external iSight, and Logitech Desktop mics. All worked. Testing again after you shut down (not "Restart") your MacBook and then start it up again.
    (3) If you still have trouble, test with QuickTime instead of Photo Booth. QT lets you change the microphone source by clicking QT's Preferences disclosure triangle as shown in this image:
You Mac's choices will be different than those shown in the image, but any sound input source that is recognized by your Mac will be there. Any mic that works in QT should also work for Photo Booth when selected in your Mac's System Preferences... > Sound > Input. After selecting the mic, say a few words and watch the "Input level:" meter to check whether the mic is working.
After selecting your other microphone, the blue indicator lights in the sound check "Input level:" meter in Preferences should flicker when you talk. If they do, the mic should also work with Photo Booth.
    (4) If your alternate mic works with QT but still fails with Photo Booth, try resetting your Photo Booth preferences. If you have never done it, here is how:
     • Restart Mac
     • Navigate to the "com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist" file in your Home ( ) > Library > Preferences folder.
(Be sure you are in the Home Folder preferences folder, not your System's.)
     • Throw the "com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist" file in the Trash
     • Launch PB and test again.
    (5) If the PB problem persists, apply the 10.6.6 Combo Update using the following process:
      • Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
      • Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
      • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
      • Download and install http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
      • Test PB again
(• Turn Time Machine on again when you are satisfied that the update worked.)

  • Recording Quicktime Screen Capture WITH system audio

Picked up Snow Leopard earlier today. All installed, nice upgrade.
I've got a question regarding the new QuickTime. With the new QuickTime feature that allows you to capture screen movements and save as a .mov file, is it possible to also capture system audio?
I currently see 3 audio input options: 1.) built in mic, 2.) Soundflower (2ch), and 3.) Soundflower (16ch).
I've tried both of the "Soundflower" options (I don't know what these are) and they don't seem to be doing anything. One alternative, I suppose, is to play the audio through speakers and let the mic pick it back up .... but there's got to be a better option than that.
    Any suggestions?

You mean "you do not need to pay". The instructions you link to involve a third party application called SoundFlower.
(Disclaimer: I have not used it myself, and I do not know if it is harmless.)

  • Playlists don't work with separate audio clips

I have a timeline with 8 different clips and chapter playlists set up to play each clip individually and to play them in pairs.  This works fine.
But when I add audio to the timeline it goes wrong. I have 8 different audio clips that match up with the video clips.  If I view the timeline itself, everything is OK.  If I view the first clip's playlist (with the first audio clip) it also works OK.  But if I view any of the other playlists, the DVD (and previewer) return me back to the menu as soon as the audio track starts (this is the end action). If I delete any of the audio tracks, the playlists for those videos work fine again.
I also see similar behaviour on another timeline where a second audio clip starts midway: the chapter immediately before the new audio track is skipped in a playlist and the DVD plays the subsequent chapter (there are many chapters on that timeline).
The only solution I've come up with is to burn a DVD with no audio, rip the video, line up the audio tracks I want to use with the video, export them all in one big file and then add that single clip into Encore.  It's not really something I want to do, to be honest.
Is there any explanation for this strange behaviour, or is it another bug?
Thanks for any help or pointers towards sorting this out.

I'm with Neil on the 8 separate Timelines. There are pitfalls to grouping multiple Clips onto one Timeline, and even an Audio Unit's difference in Duration can cause issues.
If you do go with the discrete Timelines workflow, you'll just do Playlists, and not Chapter Playlists instead.
    Good luck,

  • Does QT Pro allow webcam and separate audio inputs?

I've got a Logitech C910 camera (supposed to be Mac compatible) and a Fast Track Pro USB audio interface. iMovie is not the solution, so I'm hoping I could use QT Pro to create the video, then open it in iMovie '11.

  • Why won't 'Speakable Items' Work with USB Audio Input Device (Lexicon Lambda)?

I am new to Apple Macs, yay for me!
I really want to use the 'Speakable Items' feature but unfortunately it just won't work with my Lexicon Lambda external USB Audio device.
Now, the Lambda is plugged in and working, and I know this from using the "Diction' feature which works perfectly.
When I go to System Preferences and click on accessibility>'Speakable items' and I turn on speakable items, I notice that under 'microphone' I'm unable to calibrate the microphone for some reason (if that's at all relevant).
I follow the instructions and have been asking 'what time is it?' and nothing happens
    Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem, using 10.8.4. I have been using Speakable Items for a long time, but it's not reacting at all anymore. I'm on a Mac Mini and have tried several inputs, that all work with dictation, and are selectable inputs for Speakable Items. Zoom H4N, Apogee Duet and an UAD Apollo. The only problem I can see, aside from something in the OS, would be that I have SoundFlower and WavTap installed. Will try uninstalling them, to see if that helps.

  • Lightning to hdmi with separate audio to speaker ?

I have an iPhone five that I'm trying to hook up to a projector as well as the speaker using the lightning toHDMI connector. While using Bluetooth or the headphone jack I still don't get audio out of the speaker does anyone know how to accomplish this

    BSteely,
    Thanks, I learned something.
I also know that HDTV support and DVI-to-HDMI support just plainly blow chunks under Linux. The issue,if I understand things properly, has to do with licensing fees more than anything else. You can find my trials of trying to get a DVI to HDMI to work under the english forums at www.ubuntu.com . Do a search for HDMI, you will find my rather lengthy postings.
Then I pulled over to XP and have had issues with the 1080i mode being way too interlaced (the dang screen shakes likes my grandma).
With the Mac, it just plainly worked on the 1080i without visible shaking. I dunno how they did it, but hey it worked. If you are serious about a media hub, I am begining to think that the mini is the way to go. The only issue that I am seeing at the moment is the lack of either a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD version of the Mac mini. I think that Apple is behind the HD-DVD variation.
The other portion that I am trying to research out is a good HDTV adapter for the Mac. I don't think there is one. Although this is not a big issue for me, as I only do DVDs and not TV of any sort.
    Thanks,
    Sean Patzer, MCSE.

  • External microphones don't work with audio input

Tell me its not true that an ordinary mic won't work with the audio input....I have 2 mics which I know to work mini jack [tried both stereo and mono] and zip! nothing....what is wrong with this equation
any ideas from the floor? [do I really have to go and buy another usb headset or an iMic to resolve this??
please tell me there's another option!
    thanks
    Tony

I have been unable to get the microphone input with a Viewsonic 22" monitor with webcam to work with either iChat or iVisit with my Mac Pro. There have been other reports on the web about newer versions of the OS 10 inactivating the audio input for several programs. Is this why the microphone does not work or is it true that the audio input does not act as one? If the audio input does not work with an external microphone, what is it for?

  • Capturing sound card audio

Is it possible to capture audio being played through your computer's sound card? I used to do this all the time with Audition 2, but right now I've only got Soundbooth CS4 (at work) and CS5 (at home). Thanks!

    BSE,
Yes, Video Editor is a full Audigy 2 ZS soundcard as well as a video capture device - there are two circuit boards in the box. You can capture stereo uncompressed audio into the Line In and SPDIF inputs just like any Audigy. The video portion has its own separate audio inputs.

  • No Analog audio input?

Been reading a lot about lack of an analog input option - lots of external devices not working.
Is this in fact true? Does anyone know how to get line level recording into the iphone from a mic or guitar then?
    Thx

My understanding is that Apple removed the audio inputs from the dock connector in order to support the new USB Camera connector. However, that makes little sense. The iPhone already had USB connectivity - that's how it connects to a computer and iTunes. And the USB interface/camera adapter only works on the iPad, not the iPhone (although I did hear that you can move pictures from the iphone to the iPad over the USB connector). I suspect the reason for this is that the iPhone's battery is too small to be able to provide adequate power to most USB devices for an acceptable length of time.
But it seems unacceptable to remove fundamental capabilities that are used by many Apple approved hardware devices and software applications without providing some alternatives, or at least some warning.
I pre-ordered an iPhone 4, willing to pay the extra $200 to get it early. And I pre-ordered the new Blue Mikey thinking it would provide better mic input as well as a separate audio input and USB input for charging while recording. But now I find out that the new mic won't work with the new phone, and there's no solution in the works. I also have a Blue Yeti USB mic, but that won't work with the iPhone either (but I hear it does work with the iPad).
Apple, what's the story here? This is a disappointing loss in functionality with no warning for those of us who paid money for hardware and software for recording and can no longer use them on the new phone.
Is there a plan? Will USB mics be supported on the iPhone? Will there possibly be a software update that supports switching the dock pins from USB to/from audio? What is the recommendation for working around this issue?

  • No Audio input on G4!?

I bought a used Quicksilver, and went to capture some video, with audio of course, and.... it has no audio input! That's pathetic. In fact, it's beyond pathetic--it's sick. I have a drawer full of microphones (Mac, PC, professional, etc.) and i can't use any of them..?!
Is there an adapter or something that will let you use a standard mic with the QS? I have no intention of buying more hardware, e.g. a USB mic, when i have tons already. Not since the days of the Intel 486 have i seen a computer with no audio input. Thanks.

    Hi, paulpen -
...because i already have several mics (none of them USB of course).
Not sure if you went to the page describing the iMic; if so, you may have missed that the iMic is an adapter, not a microphone. It allows the use of many different mic types in order to input sound via USB.
Since you already have several microphones, likely more than one will work with the iMic.
I did figure out how to get line audio input to the QuickSilver using my DC30 card with breakout box, which seems to work fine in the QS(!!), but Mic input is still not working.
Did you try using a pre-amp to get the mic's signal up to line level strength?

  • MBP 15" w/USB headset - buzz in audio input w/power cord attached

My wife's MacBookPro 15" seems to have a problem with USB audio input (both left & right side ports); if the power cord is attached, the microphone generates a hum. Pop out the power cord and the hum stops. I'm testing this using GarageBand.
The headset is a VXI "Parrot"; it works fine with an iMac G5 17", a MacBook G3 and an Intel iMac 20" (2.16GHz core Duo).
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I am also having a similar problem.
It works fine when iBook is unplugged but hums horribly when I plug in the iBook.
Hum is also produced when I am using my iMac.

  • Live Capture with a camera via firewire and usb audio interface

I am trying to do a live capture through Final Cut 7.
I want the video feed through the firewire from my HVX200 and the audio feed from a 4 channel usb audio interface (Alesis iO4).
When I have both audio and video input coming in from the HVX200, the live capture works fine.
However, when I change the audio input so that it is coming from the usb audio interface, final cut has an error message saying "Video is not available."
During the preview, I see the video clearly and am getting levels from the iO4.
But when I try to capture, I get the error message.
Is it a processor issue (I've attached my specs below) with problems handling 2 separate inputs?
I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.
