I would like to put a song i have in itunes to my cell phone using blacktooth. but I don't want the beginning of the song as my ring tone, so Is it possible to crop parts of the song using free software?

It's possible to do this in iTunes as well for any non-iTMS tracks.
set your Import settings to MP3 and the bit rate supported by your phone, you can even choose mono if that's appropriate for your phone.
Now, set the Start & Stop times in iTunes for the file so that just the desired clip is played. Then Convert the file to the selected format. iTunes makes a copy of the original file, and the copy is limited to the desired start/stop times.
There you have it - a short MP3 ready for loading into your cell phone. Don't forget to reset your Import settings to your normal CD ripping values. And, you may want to get the short file out of iTunes so it doesn't show up during regular music playback.

You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
There's a command in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" you can check out. A paragraph on it has also been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not work with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then check the "Manually manage songs" box.
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.

As given, music purchases from the iTunes store are in AAC format. Amazon and others offer mp3s.
To convert your files to MP3, setup your import settings (Edit > Preferences > General > Import Settings) for the target format & bitrate, select tracks, right-click and click Create MP3 version.
Note that unless converting from one lossless format to another you will lose some audio quality in any conversion. Whether that loss is noticeable or acceptable is for you to determine.
If you do decide to change formats, and don't want to keep the duplicate originals in the library, then you may find my ConvertFormat script useful.

The only way to get songs on an iPhone is by synching the songs from your iTunes library, or purchasing them from the iTunes store on your phone.
You can search yourself for sites that offer free music.

The iphone is not a storage/backuip device.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a abckup copy of your computer for this very occasion. Have you failed to do this?
If so, then you may be able to purchase a third party program ( not supported by Apple) to get the songs.

You could try with an external editor or an app that can apply masking overlays - even Pages, for instance.

There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

I was just wondering if it were at all possible to purchase songs via an Internet browser, and then download them at a later time using the iTunes application.
I currently do not have my own Internet connection as I am out of town for a couple weeks, but would like to get new music. The only places I can find in this town that has Internet connection are some small cafes with free wireless Internet. However, the connections are problematic; in this case, it takes a long time (between 15 and 20 minutes) to search for one song, add it to the Shopping Cart, then buy it successfully. However, I can download songs very quickly. I am currently on a wired connection (not my laptop), and this connection is fine, so I was hoping I could purchase songs and then just download them using my laptop on a wireless connection.

why would you want to risk your account info on a connection at a cafe somewhere on the street? and why would you wanna buy the songs now and download them later? ....... the songs are always there, they are not going anywhere. you can still buy and download them when you think the conenction is safe and fast.... also, you can not buy songs from IE and download them from itunes, you have to buy them from itunes in order to download them in itunes ............ you can still buy songs many places on the internet from IE, but you can not download them in itunes .... they are seperate.
you can import songs into itunes tho ... if you already have them on your computer, yes you can use the add files to library in itunes.
