Possible to do optical character alignment?

Is it possible to do optical character alignment?
I am used to doing this in InDesign - wondering if there is a comparable feature in Pages.
See this article for explanation:
http://www.cambooth.net/archives/328

Hi Matthew,
Feature not available. Not surprising, considering the difference in price between Adobe Indesign and Pages.
With some work, you might be able to produce a similar effect manually, using a workaround patterned on the one described in that article.

Barry

  • What OCR (optical Character recognition) software is compatible with iMac?

What OCR (optical Character recognition) software is compatible with iMac?
I am using OS X 10.9.1 on my iMac with an Epson CX8600 printer/scanner.

My new Brother multifunction came with Presto PageManager. I can't recommend that it in the least. Its OCR is terribly inaccurate to the point of being unusable in my tests. Even normal sentences came out mashed together.
I wanted to try IRIS, but it has no test version, just videos, that I could find, and emails to them just led to a Windows demo that is irrelevant. They ignored my email asking about a Mac demo, so I could not even try it out. That pretty much knocks it out of the running for me as this software is too expensive to just buy based on their promotional videos alone.
Then there's Vuescan, and it's not too bad for OCR and supports about every device you could possibly conceive of using, and that's a plus. It was fairly accurate, but not as accurate as Finereader Pro. The interface is a bit complex to my taste.
I've been testing out ABBYY Finereader Pro, and they do have a demo, and so far it seems to be the most accurate of what I've been able to test. It gets pretty close to everything on English and Spanish, and supports most common languages (check the list on their website). It even properly recognized syllables of phonetic Tibetan (using Roman alphabet, but it will not detect Tibetan). The UI is pretty good, but not perfect and there's no way to train for odd words you might need. I haven't tried it for Chinese or Japanese, but for my purposes, unless I find something more economical, I'll buy this one for its accuracy.
I really suggest you download demos and try them for yourself as none of these are particularly cheap

  • Optical margin alignment

I'm using Win Indesign CC 2014.
I would like one paragraph to have optical margin alignment. But I would like all the rest to not have it.
It seems as though if I turn it on, that it applies optical margin alignment to the whole document.
Is there any way to have it apply to just selected paragraphs, or have I just missed something?
    Thanks,
    Phil

There is no way to select a single paragraph and apply Optical Margin Alignment to it, OMA is a story-wide setting.
That said, funny enough (if you are inclined to think of such weird "design" decisions as "funny", ha ha), the reverse is possible: a paragraph and/or paragraph style can be set to ignore OMA. Look in the paragraph/style Alignment subdialog, there should be a checkbox.

  • Optical margin alignment not in Indesign cc

When I open Story it is blank. There is no box to activate optical margin alignment. And there does not seem to be a way to activate it in Preferences. Are other users having the same problem or is this just me?

  • OCR (Optical Character Recognition)

I have just bought this new printer/scanner.I am trying to use the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) text converter that came with my old printer.  When I scan as a photo the output comes as several pictures and all the text is missing.  When I scan as a document the output is in PDF.  And the OmniPage text converter is of no use.Does anyone have any suggestion.  Or should I just buy a new ink cartridge for my old Canon, and return this HP to Costco? Many thanks.

Your answer is much appreciated.  I'll get round to trying the solution when I can whip up enough enthusiam.  Right now I'm a bit fed up with trying to get the machine sorted out!  Probably not so much the machine as the operator, it's way too hot here today.  33 deg celcius.I am a bit unsure if it will do the trick, but it's the best aswer so far!Thank you

  • Is it possible to add new character set encodings?

    Hello,
is it possible to add new character set encodings in Mac OS?
Practically, i need to add "Russian (DOS)" encoding to Tiger, but is it at all possible even in newer versions of Mac OS?
Where to find the missing encodings and how to install them?
Google search did not return much.
    Thanks.

Well, it was a general question about possibility of adding new encodings in Mac OS, but i posted a more specific question about Tiger here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2692557&tstart=0
On Tiger i do not have Russian (DOS) in TextEdit, only Cyrillic (DOS).
The same about TextWrangler on Tiger.
Strangely, i have Russian (DOS) in TeXShop on Tiger.

  • Optical character recognition--how do I scan a document to text I can edit.

Optical character recognition--how do I scan a document to text I can edit?

You first scan the document to a PDF. Then you run OCR from within Acrobat. Depending on your setup, the OCR may be run automatically.
If you want to edit so the changes show on the screen, you will need to use ClearScan. The other two searchable options put the OCR text in a layer behind the image of your original document.

  • Paragraph-level Optical Margin Alignment

    InDesign CS2 (4.0.5) on Mac (10.4.11) - shortly upgrading to CS4
Maybe I'm missing something here, but I can't figure out the sense of having Optical Margin Alignment at "Story" level.
I have a layout with a story that runs across several pages. Within that story (and in any given text frame), I have large headlines, medium-sized introductory paragraphs and/or pull quotes, and the body text. There appears to be no way of setting a type size to control the optical alignment for each paragraph. If I set the type size (in Story options) to the size of the body copy (say, 9pt), it isn't enough to make a difference to the headlines (say, 24pt). Obviously if I set the type size to 24pt it makes a total mess of the body copy. How many layouts only have one type size per story? Surely this hanging punctuation option needs to be at para level?

Can you switch off Optical alignment in the paragraph styles in CS2
    or only CS3 and above?
Even still, I think this is worthy of a feature (amendment) request.
I'm not surprised it has been mentioned before!
Having used Quark for years, I found InDesign so much better from
version 2 (pre-CS) onwards, but this is just frustrating and so not
like Adobe, whose products I generally rate as well-rounded and well
conceived. Oh well, guess I'll just have to do my hanging
    quote marks manually… until CS5?

  • Optical Margin Alignment in Paragraph Styles?

    Hello,
I'm currently redesigning a newsletter for a company. I have been setting up various Paragraph Styles for different areas of text. Is there any way that I can use the Optical Margin Alignment tool in a Paragraph Style so that all text applied to that style uses the same Optical Margin Alignment setting? I'd rather not have to manually select every single piece of text and set it that way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Laurence

    Hi Steve,
Yes, I thought that would be the case. I've read everywhere that it can only be "ignored" in Paragraph Styles. I'm still learning InDesign in some respect, so could you explain to me what you mean when you say "at the level of a story"?
Also, is there any rule of thumb for using the Optical Margin Alignment with text? Or is it a simple case of trial and error until you get good results?

  • It's possible to convert 'WE8MSWIN1252' character to chinese character set?

    Hi All,
Is anyone know how to convert "WE8MSWIN1252" character to chinese character set in order to display chinese word in oracle apex?
My problem is i can't display chinese character set in oracle apex. The chinese field is showed like °×ѪÇò¼ÆÊý. I'm using WE8MSWIN1252 database character set.
I'm wondering it's possible to show character word?
I'm appreciating if anyone have a good solution to share with me.
    Thanks a lot in advance!
Edited by: Apex Junior on Jul 16, 2010 2:18 PM

WE8 is a Western European character set. If you wish to store and access a globalized multibyte character set you must have a database that supports it: You don't have one at the moment.
Given this is Apex I'd suggest you read the docs and reinstall.
Alternatively you could try CSSCAN and CSALTER and perhaps you can make the change but be very careful and have a good backup before you try.

  • Is it possible to do optical mutlitrack recrdings with MBP?

Can anyone tell if this is possible and what products would work?

i was asking about the optical on the MBP itself and
if there is actually i/o for other devices alike
ADAT, but from what i read so far it seems to only
support audio out to suround systems., is this
    correct?
I am about to get one so i am curious if it does
anything other then send audio out.
    Oh, thanks for clarifying...
In that case you can only do STEREO recording with the SPDIF format optical digital IO. Any device with optical SPDIF format can work. But, I do not recommend it, as the sample rate clocking might be a problem (IE the mac can't be "slaved" to external word clock).
    Cheers

  • Scanning in OCR (optical Character Reading) mode

    Dear Sirs,
My printer HP 4507 cannot scan in OCR mode even though I choose the option (HP ENVY 4500 series software and HP 4507 printer) "Document to File" (PDF), output type:Black&White, resolution:200 dpi, Item Type: Document, File Type: PDF.
After scanning process, at the end, even in PDF File type the character are scanned as image only not in the text mode.  In another words, I cannot copy the text from PDF file to MS Word processor.
If I am to acquire OCR software first to perform scanning in text mode, where can I obtain this OCR software for HP 4507 printer?
Microsoft Office Document Scanning application cannot recognize or find the HP  4507 Scanner when it was supposed to.
In this matter, a support would be much appreaciated.
    With regards,
    rakam

    Hello rakam,
The HP Envy 4500 model does not support any OCR functionality withn the HP Software, for that you wlill need any 3rd party software which support a such.
You may use any 3rd part OCR solution to scan as editable text.
If you have Microsoft Office suite there is a good chance the office suite provide this kind of capabilities:
    Office 2007 or 2010:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14595/ocr-anything-with-onenote-2007-and-2010/
    Office 2003:
    http://agsci.psu.edu/it/how-to/perform-ocr-with-microsoft-office-2003-document-imaging
As I understand you experience issues with the solutions above, that may happen due to non-working Windows Services.
Follow these steps which might be applicable for a such, as well ensure the Windows Service as described within Solution 3:
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03586087/
For any issues, let me know what connection type you use, as well disable any firewall software is used and try again.

  • Pdf ifilter OCR (Optical Character Recognition) 64 bit SharePoint

    Folks,
We have 3 windows server 2008 (2 front end and 1 index) 64 bit MOSS servers and 1 SQL Server 2008 64 bit server in our SharePoint environment.
We also have pdf iFilter 64 bit version from Adobe and we can successfully search PDF content. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4025
However, scanned / OCR ed PDF content are not returned while indexing using the pdf iFilter 9 (64 bit). Then I followed http://blogs.msdn.com/ifilter/archive/2007/03/29/indexing-pdf-documents-with-adobe-reader-v-8-and-moss-2007.aspx except with  Adobe Reader 9, which indexes PDF files that are OCR ed.
Also, this appears to be 32 bit version of reader and I couldn't find 64 bit version of Adobe reader, however it works great. I can successfully search scanned pdf content from MOSS search interface. J
    My question is
    1. What is the different between 2 iFilters
    2. Am I doing some thing that might significantly affect index server performance?
    3. Why OCR not working on 64 bit iFilter version from Adobe?
    Any thoughts would be great
    Thanks
    Parthi

    Parthi,
Since the crawler just uses the registered iFilter for returning text, you should ask Adobe why there is a difference.

  • Possible solution for optical drive problems

I recently purchased a memorex cd/dvd lens cleaner at best buy and cleaned my drive with it. It now reads everything it wouldn't before. I haven't tested it but I imagine burn reliability is better too. For those that aren't having real troubles with their drive, you might try a dvd cleaner. My drive is a GWA4080MA. Disks that are now readable include TDK DVD-RW and +RW, Sony DVD+R DL, Sony DVD-R and Office Depot DVD+R DL.

A lens cleaner brought my drive back from the dead (according to Apple) so I second that suggestion.
