Possible to download directly to DVD, or external drive?
I am trying to use my old Power Mac (OS X 10.4.11) for only videos. I would like to download the appropriate VLC Media player and install it ONLY on that Mac. I tried today to set Safari's preferences to download to the burn folder, but it did now work--the download went to my download folder, where I then trashed it. (I don't know what will happen if I try to install a program for a non-intel Mac onto my MacBook Pro.) I am hoping to find a way to complete this without setting up my old Mac to the internet--a complicated process for me as well.
Am I trying something useless?

the software should come in the form of a disk image (.dmg). just download it and copy it to a USB stick or whatever. if the Power Mac is on your local network, mount the .dmg on the desktop of the Mac you downloaded the file and drag the app to the app folder on the Power Mac.

I have lost my Safari app and all the bookmarks that go with it. I have tried to download my back-up on external drive but cannot access it. Tried a start with C key held down but still no access to the back up app.
Have used Superduper app. to back up and checked back-up occasionally to see if all files present and appeared OK.
I had previously started machine using original CD #1 to try and replace Eudora which was acting up. Did not knowingly touch Safari.
Running iMAC System 10.4.11
How can I successfully download from the Maxtor back-up?
IvanFurther info.
I checked the content of my other back-up and found the bookmark Bookmarks.plist in the library under Safari
Dumped the existing copy in the computer and drag-dropped the back up. All bookmarks restored.
Solved the Stickies problem by using Spotlight to find file "stickiesdatabase" and did a drag- drop to replace file. All data restored.
Re Ical data loss. Used Spotlight to find iCal document in Library - Preferences where I found com.apple.iCal.plist in folder.
Got ready to make change but did not immediately remove file. When I returned to Preferences folder to grab above document,
the readable descriptors had been changed to code consisting of some upper case letters and/or single symbols!
So now I cannot tell which is the symbol iCal.plist
Thanks for leading me so far, but how do I find that plist for my calendar? -
How to download all songs from my external drive into my itunes library
I have enough Gbytes to not use an external drive for my music.
How do I proceed to download all songs from the external drive on my internal drive?Hello there, Laetidela.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps on how to move your iTunes library from an external hard drive to your computer:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
External drive
This option requires more work than Home Sharing, but it creates a backup of your iTunes library on the external drive in addition to moving your content.
Notes before you start:
You can use most iPods as an external drive.
Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Because of this, you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod or external drive to move your music to a Windows PC. See iPod: How to determine iPod's hard disk format if you're not sure how your iPod is formatted.
Mac OS X can read Windows-formatted iPods and drives. This means there are many ways to migrate your information from your old Windows-based PC to your new Mac.
Mac OS X: To be sure external drives appear on your desktop, choose Preferences from the Finder menu. Be sure the options for "External disks" and "Hard disks" are enabled.
Part 1: Locating and consolidating the iTunes Media folder
Part 2: Copy iTunes folder from the old computer:
Part 3: Get iTunes ready on your new computer
Part 4: Back up any music that's already on your new computer
Part 5: Copy music to your new computer
Part 6: Add preexisting music that was on the new computer back into the library
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,
Pedro. -
Is it possible to store all photos in an external drive? How do I do it?
I have too many photos to store in my MacBook. Is it possible to store all photos in an external drive and still use iPhoto (or Aperture) to view them all?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

New Unibody MBP won't boot from DVD or external drive, just loops
Hey
We bought a new Unibody MBP on Monday, and loaned it to our CTO for a presentation. Having got it back from him now I wanted to nuke the installation and put a fresh copy of leopard on it, so I dropped the DVD in the drive, powered down, and booted holding the "C" key.
I get the chime, screen lights up, thinks for a bit, and if you use your imagination you can almost hear the DVD spin up. Then the screen goes black, lights up, chime, thinks a bit, goes black, lights up, chime and so on
I've tried booting from an external bootable clone I created with CCC (firewire external HDD), and same symptoms.
I even tried swapping in a hard drive that I know has a working bootable copy of Leopard on it, and then all I get is the eternal cycle, without pressing any keys on startup.
I also tried holding down the Option (Alt) key on boot to get the boot device selector. This correctly identifies the various boot devices - the DVD, on-board HDD and external firewire drive (if connected), and lets you select them, tries to boot, thinks, black screen, screen lights up, chime, repeat cycle endlessly until extremely frustrated.
Is there a known cure for this or am I doomed to take the thing back to the Apple store on Monday?
Thanks
KonradRaj wrote:
That is not the reason it didn't work. Here is the actual clarity:
*A retail Leopard DVD should be able to boot a new Macbook Pro unibody.*
So you are saying even if the driver for the controller on which the DVD drive sits is not available in the Leopard DVD you are using because the hardware was not manufactured at the time the Leopard release on the DVD was made, the OS should magically just boot? How is that possible? Unibody MacBook Pros have entirely NEW AHCI chipset - for which there won't be any drivers on the older Leopard DVD and as such the DVD wont be detected once the OS on the DVD loads. In cases where the chipset used is same (as in previous generations of MBP) it will boot.
The key difference here is that if you used an older version, some new hardware may not be supported - however, the computer *should still boot from the DVD*, which is the subject of this discussion.
The OP said that his computer boots from the DVD that came with the computer - just not with the old retail Leopard DVD. Also - what should happen if the new hardware happens to be the controller on which the DVD drive is sitting? How will it be able to read the DVD? What about the graphics card? If the drivers on the old leopard disk do not recognize the new graphics card - how is the OS going to display on screen?
On my way home, I stopped at a Mac store and asked them to test this. They successfully booted a new Macbook Pro unibody from an older Leopard DVD. And this is why Apple is replacing my computer, because it is a hardware issue, not a software one.
Again - you fail to understand that whether or not the old DVD boots on a new machine all depends on how much hardware has changed and what hardware has changed. It may boot on some generation of machine because the basic chipset and graphics did not change or were handled generically by the drivers on the older DVD but it may totally refuse to boot on new gen machine which has totally different / incompatible hardware.
So your claim that any old Leopard DVD must continue to boot on any new machine is not really technically explainable. -
Downloading files from DVD or hard drive cameras
Is it possible to download files from hard drive or dvd cameras to be used in Premiere without using the capture function which needs to be done in real time?
Importing files from a DVD camcorder or other MPEG device, or Ripping DVD files rarely results in success in Premiere... do not be fooled by movie industry advertising into thinking that "DVD Quality Video" is suitable for EDITING... it is not... a DVD is designed to be for PLAYBACK only... and that includes trying to edit a Standard Def MPEG file!
Go to my notes page http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM
Click the internal link for editing compressed files... read
There are other products better suited to your task... but if you only have DVD type files, you should convert to DV AVI
The only SD files that Premiere likes are DV AVI type 2 -

Can anyone recommend an external optical drive that will work with the M200?LITEON LSC-24081MX (see attach)

10.4.8: DVD Player & external drives
I just posted this to another thread, and then realized that thread was marked "Answered." So I'm starting this new one.
My problem began after I upgraded to 10.4.8 (via Software Update) this past weekend. For some reason, DVD Player will not work with DVDs on my LaCie external DVD drive.
When I insert a DVD, DVD Player opens (as per my CDs & DVDs system preferences), and then I get:
"There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found (-70012)"
And when I click "OK," DVD Player closes. The volume does mount, however, and the drive shows up in System Profiler fine. The problem is with DVD Player. If I try to open DVD Player with the disk already in, I get the same error (and again it closes after "OK"). So I can't open a VIDEO_TS folder anywhere else either. DVD Player just won't open completely.
It sorta seems like the OS has reverted back to its behavior in 10.3, when DVD Player wouldn't even install unless you had an internal Apple DVD drive
(see, from 2004: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42727 ). At the time, the only way to watch DVDs on an external drive was with an app like VLC (which still works). But VLC runs jerky on my older Mac, and the DVD Player interface is much better.
That changed when 10.4 began supporting external drives for DVD Player, and it worked fine for me just a few days ago in 10.4.7. But now with 10.4.8 it seems like it won't play nice with external drives anymore. I repaired disk permissions after installing the upgrade. And I checked with LaCie & I have the latest firmware in the drive). Anyone know what's going on?
I have a G4 533DP, running 10.4.8, and the LaCie is a 16x DVD+-R (Porsche Design), containing a _NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A device.
Thanks for any help available.Well, not "solved," but I was mis-remembering part of the problem: 10.4 did not correct the inability of DVD Player to recognize external drives -- I forgot that there was a software patch (a terminal script, I think) which allowed them to be recognized. Sorry for the trouble.

Circle with slash/won't recognize DVD or external drives
I have this model:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP55.00AC.B03
SMC Version (system): 1.47f2
Serial Number (system): 7304001D66D
Hardware UUID: 134FD99D-DF06-5912-A8B9-255280C48DCC
It often fails to boot with the circle with slash. Tried safe boot (works), tried booting from optical drive with original system disc (won't recognize or eject-tried all of the eject techniques), and ran disk repair in target mode (found nothig wrong). Can't run hardware check for obvious reasons. It does not see external drives connected to FW or USB ports.I am starting to suspect a bad logic board. Any thoughts?I can no longer startup from a CD/DVD
Be sure you're inserting the DVD that came with your Mac Pro. If you are trying to boot from other optical media be sure it is compatible with Intel Macs and specifically the Mac Pro. You are probably trying to boot off a discs that does not have a suitable OS on it.
or my external FW drive which has 10.4.8 also installed on it (pre-intel)
Same goes here. Your FireWire drive does not have a suitable OS installed in it. You need to install an Intel version of Mac OS X. Additionally you will probably need to repartition your drive using the GUID Partition Table. Until you do both of these Startup Disk will not let you select it. -
Kernel panic when booting from DVD or external drive
Hey Folks,
I have a 13" MBP, seems to run fine for the most part.
However, I can't boot from DVDs or external hard drives. Disk Warrior, my and a tech support buddy of mine's OSX Snow Leopard DVDs, and external boot disks all cause a kernel panic when selected from the alternate boot menu when rebooting with alt.
The DVD/External spins up, the loading spinner goes for about 20-30 seconds, and then BAM - Kernel panic. I'd reinstall OSX... but I can't!
Any suggestions? I'd rather not send the computer to a tech for a week - I need it daily for work.Kernel panic log:

Can I copy 10.4.2. DVD to external drive?
I buy the new OS but didn't believe they would sell it wothout a CD version.
On a system with a DVD, can I copy the installation DVD to an external drive then use that to upgrade my CD only system?
I bought an IPOD Nano but it needs a system with 10.4.If you want to "copy" the DVD system to an external
and then install it on a computer that does not have a DVD ROM drive,
it will be very tricky, very time consuming, very confusing,
and there is a chance that what is installed may not be the same exact 100%
of files installed if the "proper way" (boot from OEM CD/DVD) also the way I'm referring to you don't even have the options such as erase and install, preserve user profiles, archive and install, and etc... as you would if you were booting from the DVD/CD.
In theory I think it can be done with 10.4 (but I haven't done it with it yet, although I've done it with a eMac Restore/10.2.4 Install DVD I bought off of eBay and then ran the install while booting off of my H.D. even while the installer files were on the H.D.)
Another way besides what is mentioned above is to contact Apple cause I think there is an exchange program where you can exchange your Tiger DVD and get Tiger CD's (with a nominal fee of course.)
I would suggest going through Apple, in fact it is safer that way, go through Apple or see if you can find OEM Tiger CD's on eBay.
Good luck with whatever you choose. -
Hi I'm looking for a way to download everything onto an external drive to free up my internal drive because its full. Any help?
Keywords, sometimes called tags, are words assigned to a photo based on the content - so, you could tag all your kids photos with their names, all the birthday shots with 'birthday' so to find all the shots of John's eighth birthday it would be
Smart Album
Keyword is John
Keyword is birthday
Year is whatver...
Some ideas about organising in iPhoto:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me. -
How can I download my products to an external drive
I want to download my products from the Creative Cloud to my external drive. I have the Creative Cloud there already, but when I download the products (PS) it wants to put it on my hard drive.
What OS?
Most applications are not contained in a single app file. Certainly, Adobe apps are not. On Mac OSX, for example, ALL apps MUST be installed in the boot-drive's "Applications" directory, so the OS can properly locate and maintain other files (located elsewhere on the boot drive), for successful app performance. Attempting to install in other locations (such as an external drive) is problematic for the OS. -
Is it possible to download photos from ipad to external hard drive?
I am wondering if it would be possible to use ipad with retina to get photos from camera to an external hard drive? We are hoping to do this for holiday snaps over an extended period without having to take a laptop with us.
I've never tried myself, but you can look at these options
There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.
Another option:
Expand your iPad's storage capacity with HyperDrive
