Possible to edit DVD created with iDVD, redux?

Created a DVD using iMovie then iDVD and burned. Didn't save original setup in iDVD. Would like to edit DVD and re-save as new DVD. Is this possible?

As Bengt says, you need to rip the content from the DVD disk to a new iMovie and then create a new iDVD project and burn a new disk from that. You can use Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip or Ripit to extract the video file from your DVD disk. Here are directions for doing so that I took from a post by AppleMan(Thanks, AM):
+I have found I get the best results when I use MPEG Streamclip (which is free). You also have to install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component which costs about $20. Once you install the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component, you don't have to interact with it, but MPEG Streamclip needs it.+
+Insert your DVD in your drive. If DVD player runs automatically, shut it down. You should see your DVD as an icon on the desktop. Open it in a finder winder. You should see a folder which has VOB files.+
+Open MPEG Streamclip and drag these VOB files into Streamclip. If it offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes. You can do the VOB files one by one if you want to deal with shorter clips. Or, you can drag all the VOB files at once and create one long clip, or use streamclip to separate them into smaller clips.+
+In Streamclip, select File/Export using Quicktime and choose Apple Intermediate Codec. You may want to check "Deinterlace" in this step. Try deinterlacing and see if you like it. It depends on your final target media as to whether this will help.+
+Now you should have MOV files in Apple Intermediate Codec which can be imported into iMovie.+

  • Play dvd created with iDVD won't play in QuickTime

    Hi!
Just a simple question:is it possible to play the dvds I created with idvd in quicktime? and if so, how?
If not, are there any other players one could recommend for detailed video analysis and coding? Ideally I need to be able to forward to a specific time and to take notes at the same time (would need that for my research project).
I can not open the dvd with QuickTime, even when I set it as the default player in system preferences.
The only thing that works are VCL and the pre-installed DVD player.
I have QuickTime Player Version 7.1.3.
and the movies are downloaded from my digital camera with iMovie 6 and then exported and burned with iDVD 6
    Many thanks!!!

Yes and no. QT does not play DVD material (VOBs in VIDEO_TS folder) natively. In order to play the video portion of the "muxed" data stream requires the purchase of Apple's MPEG-2 QT component ($20). Even then, most commonly used "muxed" audio formats are not supported. Since QT does not properly handle/convert this material, Apple included the DVD Player as you have already mentioned. This application will play both DVDs and VIDEO_TS folder VOBs on your HDD.

MPEG Streamclip (a free MPEG based third-party application), will also play VOB files (single or multiple file series), allow scrubbing to a particular time, select segments, and, if you have the QT MPEG-2 component installed, perform minor edits, apply "on-the-fly" filters for bightness, contrast, saturation, volume, de-interlace, crop/scale, etc. as it converts to QT compatible formats (if your iMovie projects are no longer available) or third-party formats for which you may have other installed components. While it will provide limited "stream" information, I would not call it an analytical tool. (E.g., provides audio/video information like formats average data rates, audio sampling rate, etc. but not graph/read things like an instantaneous data rate -- something I have been seeking.)

  • [solution inside] Poor quality of DVD created with iDVD '08 (jerky movie)

    Hi everyone !
I have a problem with the export of iDVD, the result is jerky.
    Here's what I done
    - filmed (cam sony 42E, DV)
    - imported to iMovie '08, exported to the media navigator
    - taken in iDVD and burned on a DVD simple layer in professional quality
And it looks like the movie is 15 images/s (but apparently no problem of sound)
I checked everything's in PAL (I'm in Europe)
    I checked with another DVD
    I checked the large selection in the navigator (720 * 540, H.264, 25 fps, 4Mbps)
    I tried with "best performances"
    I tried to cut the movie : 72 min -> 35 minutes
I exported just an image disc
    Nothing fixed the problem
Finally, I exported from iMovie in .dv then integrated the file in iDVD and, this time the result was the same as in the preview (thanks to SkyDrinker for the tip)
So this is a solution, but this is strange :
or my iLife is corrupted, or the way Apple say to work (with conversion in h.264) is not good.
Did anyone else had the same problem ?
    Thank you for your feedback.
    Take care!

I had the same problem with jerky pans and dancing pixels particularly when using Ken Burns on stills.
Here is a solution. Save the 08 movies in Quicktime using AIC encoding then burn using Toast 8 with the quality slider set to best. The improvement in quality is substantial.
There is some improvement(not as much as using Toast) using Quicktime AIC encoding then burning with iDVD with Professional Quality and dual layered DVDs just to make sure the quality indicator is well into the green.
The disadvantage in using Toast as compared to iDVD is that the cool menus are lost.
PS: All my burning is done using NTCS but it should not make a difference.

  • DVD Created with IDVD Will Play on Computer, But Not in DVD Player

I loaded some video into IMovie, then went to IDVD to create a DVD. It previews fine and the disk burned fine. I can play the disk back in the computer, but when I drop it in a Panasonic DVD Player, it won't play.
I've been burning for some time now and haven't had this problem before. Disks burned two weeks ago are fine, these are not.
I've tried a couple different brands of disks, it makes no matter.
    I'm at a loss.

One of the limitations of iDVD 4 is that 'out of the box' it doesn't support the creation of disk image files - just burning to writable media.
Your problems sound to be high burn error related. With newer versions of iDVD you can create a disk image file out of iDVD and use Apple's Disk Utility to burn the image to writable media at a low (4x or lower) speed. This reduces the amount of burn errors. None of the iDVD versions prior to the current iDVD '08 had any provision for reducing the burn speed.
What brand of media are you using? (Maxell and Verbatim have good track records around here.)

  • Trouble copying a DVD made with IDVD 5

I have several DVD's created with iDVD.
I erased all the original projects. Now I want to make copies and the superdrive keeps spitting them out. The discs will not stay in. I can play them fine on DVD players. I have tried other disks to see if the disk drive is bad and it works fine. Any ideas of what is wrong?

I'm not saying for certain that you do, but you may have a problem with the optical drive.
I am assuming this is the same Mac that you burned them on?

  • Unable to duplicate DVD created on iDVD

I have a DVD that I created using i DVD on my mac book pro.
I brought this DVD to a dupliation service and they were unable to
duplicate this DVD because they said the chapters were not "closed
out". The DVD plays fine is several different DVD players and both
mac and PC computers. However the duplicator company is not able to
provide dupliation service the way the DVD is. I was unable to find
any way to "close Out" the chapters in iDVD.
I used "transparent Blue" theme from "Old Themes" - and used iDVD 7.0.4
Anyone have a clue to fix this problem?
    Use a different duplication company?
    Upgrade to DVD studio Pro??

    Welcome to the forums!
That is strange! DVDs made with iDVD are in the standard format of mpeg2 and should present no such problems.
How many copies do you need? As long as you allow your Mac to rest and cool down every 3 copies or so, you can do this yourself.

  • Editing a film with IMOVIE and create a DVD memu with IDVD

    Dear all,
I edited a film with Imovie (with music, picture effects...). Now I try to create a DVD memu with IDV. For example, for a trip, I want to create a main menu (Australia) and sub menus (Sydney, Red center...). With this sub menu I want to attach some specifics sequences of my film edited with IMovie.
I export the film from Imovie but when I try to use it with IDVD I have only one file. So I cannot create a menu and chose different sequence.
Could you please explain to me how to obtain sequences edited on IDVD. I can see some sequences on IDVD but it is the uncut movie.

I had the same question about iMovie'08 a few days ago. You need to add the chapters outside iMovie'08. I found this freeware at http://www.applesolutions.com/bantha/MH.html and it worked well for me.
Basically it opens your movie file exported from iMovie. You select manually the location of each chapter, then save the file again. When you drop this new file onto iDVD, the expected PLAY and Scene Selection buttons appear as expected. The instructions on the site are easy to follow.
Alternatively, there is a also a separate hack to edit the ProjectData file located inside the iDVD project package, but this did not work properly for me. I have not tried the GarageBand hint.

  • Importing from DVD created with iMovie or iDVD

    Hi All,
My friend and some crew guys recorded themselves doing sound check, playing some songs, and being silly. It looks like whoever gave him the DVD of him singing created the DVD with iDVD and it has an audio_ts folder and video_ts folder.
He wants to put it on his myspace. So how do I import this DVD using premiere? Or how do I get the video and audio off the DVD so that I can put it on his myspace?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
When I burn that slide show on a DVD and I put the DVD in my DVD reader, conected to the television, the quality of the images become very poor.
    What's appens ??
As I see it - it falls back on that DVD is as STANDARD only Interlaced SD-Video at it's best (even commercial made ones)
The Quality You see on Your Mac is prior to this down-scaling process.
If You need higher quality (and this includes several problems)
    • DVDs can not be used
    • You can try Blu-Ray (short one on DVD disks) - BUT You also need a Blu-Ray Player as a PlayStation 3 (you also need a program that can author BD-Disks as Roxio Toast™)
    • You can try to Export as HD and to an USB-Memory stick - if You have any device that can take this
    • You can connect a Mac to a big sized flat-screen TV - and playback this way
    End of ideas.

  • Problems with DVD created in iDVD

I have a project I put together using Final Cut Express and Logic Pro. I created the DVD project using iDVD, and am having problems with the disks that I burn - they hang part-way through on various devices (after multiple burns).
I then saved the image to an .IMG file and tried to burn it on 2 different computers using different media (DVD+R and DVD-R) and at different burn speeds through Disk Manager. The disk burns ok, but fails validation with the message "Unable to burn ... (Verification of the burn failed.)"
When I mount the image on my local hard drive and play it through DVD Player, I experience no problems. This is really, really strange.
    Brian

Nope. Can't do it that way. Much better to do a fresh install to each mac......or Unless you made a bootable clone of your existing HD with CCC or SuperDuper on a like mac system. Did you do this?
In other words, to clone an existing HD you'd have to format the ext. HD to mac os extended and then move the ext. HD to a similar mac from which you would boot you mac from like this:

Hope this helps but if not just comer on back.

  • DVD created in iDVD '08 won't play

    Hey guys,
I'm kind of a newbie with the whole iDVD thing (it's my first time using it). I created a movie on a DVD9 (dual layer DVD) because it was too big for a regular DVD, according to iDVD. Ok, so I insert the disk after creating the project with the revolution theme and click on burn. It took about 45 minutes (for about an hour and a half worth of movies) and spit the DVD out when the timer said less than one minute remaining and it still said Multiplexing and Burning. I tried re-inserting the disk and waiting about 30 minutes but nothing happened.
So, I tried putting it in my DVD player and it wouldn't read it. I put it in my desktop PC running XP and it said the disk was blank. I put it back in my Mac and it played fine, like a normal DVD would (opened DVD player and started playing).
I thought I might have done something wrong so I created a new project (with the same theme) and added both movies (and waited for them to encode). I then burned it on another DVD9 and had the same thing happen (spit out with less than a minute left, won't play on DVD and blank on PC).
What should I do? Should I delete iDVD and reload it from my Leopard disk? Is there a setting I'm not checking? BTW, I left the mac alone on my kitchen table to do all the burning (no surfing or any other interaction while burning). Once I even got a kernel panic (the third time I tried it).
Oh, and when I inserted the disk into my Macbook and hit Get Info, it says the disk is only 3.63GB (I can see the TS_Video and TS_Audio files). Why did it tell me it was too big for a DVD5 then?
System: Macbook 2.2GHz, OSX 10.5.2 Leopard, 4GB Memory, 56GB free space on HD.

    Those are some good suggestions.
I'm going to check the encoding quality on my machine. I think I'm using best quality.
I have double the 25gb free space on my drive, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I didn't use iMovie. I edited the videos in Sony Vegas 8.0a Professional on my PC to encode my m2t files to MPEG-2 and transfered the MPEG-2 files to my mac's desktop and imported from there (drag and drop into the main page of the theme). The files play fine in Quicktime before importing them and the DVD plays fine on my mac after burning it.
I did choose to burn at highest speed, tho. I'll change that.
I'm using Memorex DVD+R DL (they've always worked flawlessly on my PC). I also have Memorex DVD-R DVD5s, but the program said it was too big for a DVD5 (the project is 4.8 GB on disk yet the DVD only had 3.6 GB of data on it).
I'll try the disk image and then burn using Toast or Nero on my PC and see if that works.

  • Why am I getting wavy, distorted video on a DVD made with iDVD?

I made a DVD with iDVD 5 that has wavy, distorted video. It is watchable but you can clearly see that vertical lines are somewhat wavy whenever the camera pans across the scene. An up-down pan doesn’t distort the horizontal lines, however.
The source video file doesn't display this waviness. Also, I created a DVD of the same video using a PC and the resultant DVD didn't display the waviness. The waviness occurs whether the DVD is played on the computer or a TV monitor with a standalone DVD player. From all this I conclude that it has to be a consequence of the iDVD5 burning process.
Here’s some additional information: The PC burned the video from its original MPEG-2 format. The Mac burned the video from a .mov file that I created from the original MPEG-2 file using MPEG Streamclip. (I need to use MPEG Streamclip to restore (actually convert, I suppose) the audio as the source file has AC3 audio that doesn’t play in iMovie or Quicktime.) The resulting .mov file - when played with Quicktime before burning - does not exhibit the waviness, so I don't think the MPEG Streamclip conversion process is at fault.
On the same DVD I also placed a different video from the same source. It doesn’t display any of the waviness that I get from the other video. The only difference between the videos is that this latter video – after the MPEG Streamclip processing - was chaptered in iMovie HD and then exported to iDVD as a .mov file. I’d hate to think that I have to run every video through iMovie to eliminate the waviness.
So is this just an inexplicable defect or is there something that I might do differently to avoid the waviness that I’m getting in this video?
    Thanks, Robert
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Robert,
To me, the red flag is that you've created a .mov file from Quicktime for import back into iDVD. A .mov file is generally a smaller formatted movie, typically only 320X240 pixels in size. This size movie, by default, would look perfect when played in QT. But, to go back to iDVD or iMovie, the movie must be expanded back to a 720X480 size movie (typically the DV stream that these programs want and need), so expanding will cause all sorts of distortion. Can you go back to your original MPEG2 source movie and get the movie info on it? You should be able to see the original size. If it is something like 640X480 or 720X480 then use QT to create a .DV file. This will maintain the original size.

  • Will dvd created in idvd 4 transfer to idvd6????

I am currently using iphoto/imovie/idvd 4/ thinking of going to ilife 6 (also I am on 10.3.9 - thinking of tiger)....what benefits will I see or will I just encounter a bunch of problems...like those posted.
Currrently everything is working fine but wanted to get some extra features from iphoto/imovie/idvd. I don't want to lose my pictures or movies or need to recreate everything.
Will my dvds created and still working on in idvd 4 transfer to idvd 6????
    Please advice.
    thanks,

I would NOT trust any previous project to open
right in iDVD 6. My only iDVD 5 project was a
disaster when opened in iDVD 6. I was finished with
it so it didn't matter. That said, all three of these
apps are worth the money over 4. But install Tiger
first and get to 10.4.4 before installing iLife '06.
I would do an Archive & Install of Tiger and download
and run the 10.4.4 Combo updater (not Software
Update). There's something good about that process.
    It's big at 120MB:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate104
    4combo.html
Are you saying all my finished projects I made in idvd 4 will not open in 6???

  • Can I download images from a DVD created with a newer version of iPhoto?

Hi, my first discussion forum! Why can't I download image files from a DVD created on my mother's computer(iMac G4 with Mac OS 10.4.11)?. She's running iPhoto6 and I'm running iPhoto5. Are'n't they compatible? The disc loads up OK then says at the bottom of iPhoto page "No Photos". Have tried with several disks. Many Thanks for yr help anyone.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No, iPhoto 5 can't read a library or DVD created in iPhoto 6, because the structure of the libraries are much different.
Your Mac should be able to read the DVD. Use the Finder to copy the contents of the disc to your Desktop. Then from iPhoto, you can File > Import to library the Originals folder that you copied from the DVD. If your mom did lots of photo editing, you could also import the Modified folder. However, there is no way for you to re-link the edits to their originals. You will not be able to access her keywords, titles, ratings, and other iPhoto organizational metadata.
    Regards.

  • DVD made with iDVD not playing in DVD players

I have a iMac G5 and iDVD 4. I use FCP to edit. I have made many DVDs from exporting my sequences to quicktime. Then I import that export into iDVD, and this has always been fine. For some reason, my latest project will only play on my computer using this method, not any of my 3 DVD players. What could be causing this? Did I change a setting I'm unaware of? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've watsed a good many blank DVDs from this glitch. Thank you!

I have a similar problem having to do with the menu.
I have a client who needs dvds burned with their logo as a background. When I import a tiff (or any other format) into iDVD4.0.1 on the simplest template available (brushed metal 2) everything burns fine, the disk plays on a computer, but on commercial dvd deck it freezes when you hit play (one unit indicates "pause" on the display). If I remove the graphic from the background, and burn that to disk
    , it plays fine.
The iDVD help says you can drag your own photos to a menu, so if this is causing a problem, they certainly aren't aware of it. What bugs me, is why isn't there a "blank" template (or is there one that I've missed)?
BTW this has also happened to me at work two years ago with an earlier version of iDVD. Yet it doesn't happen on my client's version of iDVD (I have a call in to see what version they have). And who do you call when Apple only refers you to forums?
Thanks for any info, and please excuse any ignorance on my part.
