Possible to get iChat 3 on Leopard?

iChat 4's tabs make me conversations too public. I liked iChat 3 with Chax better. Any way to get it on Leopard?

The Leopard version http://www.ksuther.com/chax/ does not seem to list Tabbed Chats although it does put all the Buddy lists into one.
As to the real question of whether iChat will work in Leopard ? It will not.

  • Is it possible to get AirDrop on Snow Leopard?

Is it possible to get AirDrop on Snow Leopard? I have MacBook Pro and it is newer than late 2008 model (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4783).
If it is possible then how?

Look at the reference links of software that can run in Snow Leopard:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455 - if it exists, it sure is to be in one of those areas.  Read the reviews carefully, and ask around what users have experienced with the said software before getting it.

  • Is it possible to get a new snow leopard installation disc if original has failed

We bought an MBP three years ago. We never took the installation discs out of the packaging. We just did and they have purple stains around the edge and don't work.
Obviously the mac is out of warranty, but it seemed worth asking as I have never known a DVD to acquire "disc rot" before.

Commercial disks, which Apple uses, are pressed and cannot degrade like that. If this was a brand new Mac, then either someone switched out the disks, or they were stained in some other manner. If you bought it used, then it's likely you were given copies. If they are original disks, they should be gray with white silk screened lettering. Anything else is a copy.
If you want machine specific replacements, which would include the bundled iLife software and other titles that are not on the retail disks, contact Apple. They will ask for the Mac's serial number to make sure you get the correct disks.

You will lose the entire contents of your iDisk whether or not you migrate to MobileMe as there is no equivalent in iCloud and MobileMe will be terminated at the end of June. You will need to download any data which you don't have on your Mac already.
Snow Leopard is not compliant with iCloud and most of the facilities will not work. You can migrate from MobileMe to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard: when asked to confirm that your Mac is running Lion just lie and say 'yes'. Of course you won't be able to access iCloud directly from your Mac.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it.
This will be the situation with Snow Leopard when you have migrated:
Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).
There are a couple of third-party solutions which may be of interest.
BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion. A single user licence (two machines allowed) is $49.99.
Soho Organizer can sync Calendars and Contacts with iCloud on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. A single user licence (multiple machines allowed) is $99.99.

  • Is it possible to get a virus on the Mac OS X v10.6.4 Snow Leopard?

Hi, I was just wondering if it is possible to get viruses on the new system and I was also wondering if someone could give me some help/suggestions on what I should do about a problem I had with my iMac today. When I turned on my computer from sleep today a page popped up onto my iMac computer screen saying I had trojans and viruses on my computer. It also stated I needed to download software in order to fix the problem, luckily while I was in the middle of downloading this software I noticed that the page was not from apple but it was from the internet.. thankfully I cancelled the download just on time and none of the software downloaded... I am new to Mac and I'm now really paranoid that there is viruses on my computer.. should I be worried? What should I do? If anyone has any suggestions/advice/ or help to give to me on iMac computer's -viruses-protecting them etc..I would really appreciate it
    Thanks,
    kateos9

These 'warnings' are usually pop-unders from a web page you've visited (i.e. they stay behind the page you're viewing so you don't see them until later).
They claim to have scanned your computer and found viruses: this is complete rubbish and a scam - aimed really at Windows users (the details given are often applicable only to windows).
You don't have any viruses: there are no Mac viruses in the wild. There are trojans and malware, but in all cases you have to actually install them (usually they try to make you think you are installing something else) and you would have had to give your admin password to do so.
You were right to stop the download. Never ever download or click any links on anything of this nature. Unless you have specific anti-virus software installed (which would identify itself in any warning) no warning of this nature can be genuine: it's an attempt to get you to install malware, some of which can be very nasty.

  • IChat AV on Leopard now working

thanks to Ralph's message and bhagemann's reply, iChat AV/Leopard is now working for me.
I'm going away for a while and I have been trying to get iChat AV working reliably so that I can video chat with my wife while I'm away, but every attempt to connect to/from outside resulted in the same dreaded 'no response' error. Skype works but iChat AV is so much better.
I did indeed at one time have Sharing/Internet Sharing turned on and shared via Network/Airport, but I don't generally need Airport on my iMac and had therefore deactivated it. consequently, the Sharing/Internet Sharing option was not checked and I wasn't aware that my iMac still had two IP numbers assigned to it. after reading bhagemann's reply, I reactivated the Airport network service, unchecked Internet Sharing, deactivated the Airport network service again and tried 'chatting' with [email protected] again. no more problems, at least for now ;–)
thanks guys. those two messages (after searching and trying various things for hours and hours, and even a couple of complicated calls to tech support) really helped.
    sincerely,
    Gregory

That (9C010) is the bit that says you have done the Time Machine and Airport Update and this takes your OS beyond (Above ?) the actual point that the 10.5.2 Update gets you to.
This is why you have the message about the OS not being suitable.
You have a folder in /Library (The one you can see when you open the Hard Drive) that has a folder called Receipts.
With some downloads you can fool the OS into thinking it had not done it by removing the item's .pkg
I do not think this will work in this case as it is not the only Check Software Update or the Installer makes on the OS and Packages.
I understand from EZ Jim that if you do have the Time Capsule it come with an Install Disk that Must be used before you can set it up fully. I don't have one and was unaware of this until yesterday late my time.
The only sure way I know to do this in your position is to do an Archive and Install from you Base Install Disks of Leopard and then do the 10.5.2 Combo before doing the Time Machine and Airport Update.
It may be possible to popen the 10.5.2 Combo with Pacifist and use that to Install it but I have not Tested this.

  • Kichat: How do I get iChat 3 working ?

An Update to http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=278760 Line To be removed on Posting if Accepted
    How do I get iChat 3 working ? - Upgrade hints:FAQ
    Trouble Shooting
This Post deals with Updating iChat 2 in Panther to iChat 3 in Tiger
NOTE:- What is said here was found out at the time Tiger was released and the info may not be transferable to any other OS Upgrade such as Tiger to Leopard
Ok We will start with loading Tiger and iChat version 3.0
    From Panther
There are or were several Add-ons and applications available to Panther users of iChat that are not compatible with iChat 3.
These following need to be deleted. I am not supplying links here as you don't need them.
iCAR - An Add-on that posts an Auto response Away message (produces a 1 fps result in a Video chat)
Virex for Panther - An Anti Virus app avialable to @mac account users (Produces the 1 fsp problem)
iChatUSBCam for Panther/iChat2.x - A Add-on utility for using iSight or USB cam with iChat2.x (Incompatible with Tiger/iChat 3)
iProfile - An Add-on for producing a profile on the AIM server that ichat 2.x could not do (not proven to be a problem but now not needed).
A clean install of Tiger (not Archive and Install) produces the best results.
But any install should also check these Tiger settings.
First, UPDATE to 10.4.3 as this gets past many Connection issues that became apparent with the basic Tiger (10.4) and iChat 3.0 It updates iChat to version 3.1 (it also mentions the Virex issue)
    Check Settings
Don't be complacent that you have not set anything different.
There are several new things in Tiger that may trip you up.
    These are worth looking at:
Mac Firewall. Now includes the ability to Block all UDP traffic in the Advanced button (System Preferences > Sharing >Firewall tab then the Advanced Button).
Also can now open UDP protocol for ports where as the Panther one only did TCP (Check any old Panther settings you Added to the presets).
    The ports should be:
    TCP -5190
    UDP -5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403
There are more ports for Bonjour 5297, 5298, 5353 UDP and 5298 TCP and Jabber, 5220, 5222, 5223 on TCP)
See this Apple Doc Formerly Article: 93208.
That info coverts into a table like this
QuickTime. This has a change in the name of the Connection Speed tab to Streaming (System Preferences > QuickTime) Check this is set to be equal to your connection speed (the download one if this is faster - *Preferably 1.5Mbps* ). See Apple Doc 301641 Dated 9th November 2005.
Date & Time. Not conclusively involved but worth eliminating. Set a Network Server and the correct Time Zone.
Also check it matches any similar setting in your Modem and router
Apple Remote Desktop. If this is active in System Preferences > Sharing > Services tab it causes problems for iChat.
Next, test the actual speed you are getting from your ISP.
http://www.dslreports.com/stest A range of Speed Test sites can be found here
There is a table here of the speeds you need:
iChat 3/Tiger (OS 10.4) Speed requirements
The one you get linked to in the Help menu is wrong.
    Other Known Problems
There are several other applications that iChat 3 does not seem to like.
folding@home This is a application that uses spare processor time to help find protein chains for a University.
PostgreSQL This is a data base application that can be reset to allow more processor time for iChat. See here http://www.murraywilliams.com/blog/archives/000046.html
Lotus Notes Some people have reported problems with this.
Make sure any Add-on Video cards or input PCI cards have up to date Firmware
IF you are still having problems I would do Gulliver's Routine Maintenance Tasks as laid out here.
Lastly, some routers/modems are SIP aware and give different results in iChat 3 compared to iChat 2.
This is due to the Operating System changing (like a new computer connecting to the modem) rather than iChat.
See My web pages: page4 at the SIP Text in a Box section. This has moved on somewhat since Tiger came out with Thomson-Alcatel brining out newer firmware version that are mentioned later in that section.
Also for the above try some housekeeping particularly if you do not keep your Computer on 24/7 Gulliver's, "kmosx3: Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance"
    Updated 21st June 2008
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

i think apple needs to keep up with the jones here, so far i read at LOGIC PRO FORUMS many saying cubase and pro tools left logic in the dust, 1 year ago already, sad, but true
in anycase, trye starting one app before the other to see which combination works., other wise i think more apps will fall out of sync with old logic pro

  • Can't get iChat to stop speaking IM text

Before Leopard I was able to get iChat to announce when I received a message, i.e., "You have a message from <Buddy's name>". I don't have " Voiceover turned on, but if I check the alerts in iChat to announce when I get an IM, it actually speaks the text. Very annoying. Any idea how to just get a message announcement? Thanks.

    Ok.
What you probably have then is a .plist - that holds the info - made when you had iChat 3 that is conflicting slightly with the iChat 4 info.
AS you have turned the Setting Off has it changed the action when you turn it On again ?
The .plist this is held in is com.apple.ichat.plist and this is held in /Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences which you will have to go to manually as Spotlight does not search here.
Apple seem to have hidden away the actual bit that does the Speaking which is probably based on a text file and an AppleScript.
iChat 3 kept the text in the .plist to some extent as you could change it (or it referred to the default)
Now TextEdit can be made to Open the .plist with the Finder's Open With option but in Tiger and Leopard this tends to be mostly unreadable.
Quick Look can be used to look at the .plist and it is full of < bits and > bits with comments in them and subsequent closing statements.
Editing would be best and this can be done if you have Installed Developers Tools as an option from your Install Disk.
The reason for the delay is that you can delete com.apple.ichat.plist but it will also lose every other setting you have made in the iChat Preferences...
    Bubble Colour
    Font choice
    Font Colour
Saved Transcripts if you use it.
Menu Bar icon if you use it.
All Alerts et globally in the Preferences.
Any you have also set Individually in the Buddy's Info Cards
Plus and Saved Status Messages you have created.

  • Possible to change color depth for Leopard's VNC server?

I think it is very nice to include vnc server right into Leopard. But one problem, it seems it will only accept connection from clients when it is set to use full colors. This is painfully slow over WAN, any way to change the requirement from the server end?

Possible to change color depth for Leopard's VNC server?
Yes you can modify your screen sharing application so that you can adjust the colour depth. However you need to issue a command in the terminal to get this to work.

  • Is it possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?

    Hey All,
Anyone know if it is possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?
I am using SPSS 16 and it is not compatible with snow leopard. A temporary fix right now if I partitioned my hard drive and installed Leopard on some extra space to run SPSS. This is kind of annoying because I only need Leopard to use SPSS. I would rather emulate it so I can listen to iTunes and check my email in SL.
What about Panther? I think I even have a copy of Panther to install in Parallels?
I read somewhere that the EULA restricts OS X from being emulated, which seems odd for Mac users who need to test or use old software. I understand though about emulating OS X on windows machine though. I guess they need to blow off the whole foot than just cut off one toe.
    Thanks for the thoughts!

From what I can tell, doing this would be, at best, of dubious legality.
Even so, the popular opinion seems to be that it would take some degree of hacking to pull off a virtual machine running OS X. I think that unless you are willing and able to undertake such a task, your best bet is to stick with a partition running an old version or wait for SPSS to be updated for Snow Leopard.
Although...... I have Parallels 4 (current version is 5) and it has an option, when setting up a new Virtual Machine, to install Mac OS X server (see image linked below). Perhaps if you could get a copy of the server edition of the OS you would have more success?

  • Is it possible to get photobooth?

    Hey all,
I was thinking apple would release iMedia or something which would contain the photobooth and frontrow apps but apparently not. I heard that the photobooth app works with any mac with an isight camera (no need to be built in) and was wondering if anyone knew how to get hold of the app? or if anyone has it and would be willing to share. Pls let me know

    Hello Eric
... is there a way to get more?
    Yes.
You can download from Google search results or create your own effects using Quartz Composer.
If you want to try creating your own effects, you will need to install Quartz Composer from your Leopard install DVD if you have not already done so.
See Jan Riggert's site for instructions on how to create your own effects or to download some he has created.
... is it possible to get more than 4 pictures snapped in quick succession?
The software is written to make a max of 4. I don't know any way to change that.
You can reduce the delay between groups of four by holding down the <option> key to disable Photo Booth's countdown timer every time you click for the next group.
If that is not "quick" enough for you, you could use Photo Booth's movie mode to make MANY more pictures in VERY quick succession.

You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).

  • Is it possible to get a refund for a case i bought at the store but its not an apple product?

I bought a kate spade plastic case at the store 2 months ago and even the first day of having it on my iPhone I had multiple issues with it. However, I couldn't return it because I was away at school. I went into the Apple store and asked about the possibility of getting a refund for the case but they said it was a third party product and to contact the manufacturer. I called kate spade and since i wanted a refund and purchased at the apple store there was nothing they could do and to ask the apple store for my money back because thats where I purchased it. Am I ever going to get a refund and what should I do at this point?
