Possible to Lock Dock icons?

I use a Wacom tablet and some times it is possible to 'swish' the cursor by the dock items and accidentally drag one onto the desktop where it goes 'Poof.' Since I have lots of applications I'm not always sure which one went 'poof' - it happens too fast.
My question: I am happy with the way the icons are on the dock - is there a way to lock it so they cannot be accidentally removed?
TIA,
Ken

Kenneth,
There is no option within SL to "lock the dock". I really wish there was.
I'd also like to see desktop icons not sized from the "pinch" option on trackpad. Those would be two great Enhancement requests.

Captfred

  • Is it possible to lock icons to specific desktops?

I am organizing my iMac with different desktops for different functions.  I would like to lock appropriate icons (for programs and documents) to the appropriate desktop.  Is this possible with Lion, or even with an add-on product (and if so, what is the product?)
    Thanks!

GREAT question! I understand how to customize diffrent apps to appear in the various desktop docks. But I would like different icons and folders to appear on my various desktops.

  • Lock Mac OS X 10.5.8's dock icons?

    Hi!
Once in a while, my client and I accidently drag an icon while clicking on it to make it go away. Is there a way to lock these dock icons so they won't move and vanish? Yes, our hands aren't steady since we're old.
    Thank you in advance.

Weird. Web browsers' secured web sites did not work like https://gmail.com, https://webmail.earthlink.net, https://google.com, etc. I don't see how that is related to Parental Controls' changes for dock modification?

  • Hiding a program with no dock icon

I am looking for a way to hide an application which is running without a dock icon.
I have tried using spirited away but as soon as I hide the dock icon(space suit is the app in question)spirited away can no longer find the application.
The reason for my enquiry is that space suit creates a window in expose called "SpaceSuitWin" which is taking up unnecessary space and at times making other window preview so small that they are indecipherable.
Any feedback would be awesome, not sure if this is even possible but any work arounds or alternatives are welcome. Also a fairly novice user so any tech. solutions may need to be well explained.
    Thanks

Find the info.plist file in the Application, and edit it.
    Put this:
    <key>LSUIElement</key>
    <string>1</string>
just above the penultimate </dict> entry.
You might have to move the application to update the registry. Then move it back. Relaunch.
You need to be aware that this will also eliminate the menu bar, which might be problematic depending upon the application.

  • Thin black horizontal lines on 24" iMac screen/transparent dock icons

I have a 24" 3.06 GHz iMac (purchased in August 2008) and noticed after about a half hour of running basic programs (Mail, iTunes, Firefox) I start to get horizontal lines near the top and bottom of my screen. Then if I watch a full screen video I can see my dock icons look almost transparent through the video. I took my iMac into the Apple store last month and told them about it and they kept it for 3 days and ran their "tests" and stressed the computer out to get it to do it for them but they couldn't replicate the problem. They suggested that it might be my cordless phone is too close to the screen and the frequency of the cordless phone could be causing the problem but I tried moving the phone and it still does it. When the display is off for hours and I turn it back on the lines are not there, but once I have it on for a half hour they come back and don't go away until I power off or sleep the display. I've attached a few pics of what I'm experiencing. Thank you very much.

Since the Apple Store folks could not replicate the problem, you may want to consider a cause that is part of your particular environment.
For example, if you use a power strip (surge suppressor), what else is connected to the same power strip? Is it possible that you may have too many power-hungry devices connected to the same single wall outlet, and the iMac is not getting sufficient power? Or maybe it's some electrical interference with another device on the same circuit? As a test, try disconnecting everything else, and see if the problem recurs, or connect the iMac directly to a wall outlet by itself to see if the problem recurs.
Try moving the iMac to a different location in your home and running it to see if the problem recurs.

  • Kill bouncing of dock icons (forever, though!)

    Hello
I desperately seek a way to stop dock icons from bouncing at ALL - not only DURING opening applications!
It really makes me sick. Every time a program, running in the background, seeks my attention, its icon starts bouncing, in a most stupid and ugly looking way, even if the purpose of the attention is irrelevant to me at that very moment (and that's the case most of the times).
I searched the internet about that topic, but found only how to stop icons from bouncing during opening.
All I want is to work undisturbed in one application, but having other applications running in the background.
    Any Help? Please!
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Sure, just use this in place of the first command:<pre>defaults delete com.apple.dock no-bouncing</pre>Most of these defaults commands where a path isn't specified only modify the ".plist" files inside your user's "~/Library/Preferences" folder anyway, so even if things get really screwed up, your account should be the only one affected and it will usually be possible to just delete the associated ".plist" file and log out and back in again to have everything go back to default settings. Apart from having to restore customized settings back to the way you want them, there shouldn't be any lasting effects.
However, if 'defaults' is used and a path is specified, and especially if it is preceded by 'sudo', those changes could act at the system-wide level, and in some cases could break things seriously so exercise caution.

  • 10.5.5: Bouncing dock icons and boot time

Has anyone noticed that the Dock icons seem to bounce differently under 10.5.5?
Plus that cold boot seems to take a little bit longer? My computer spends a good ten secs at the beginning doing seemingly nothing before the spinning wheel appears and the OS starts loading.
Just interested in other's experiences is all.

    Not here.

If you boot using the Cmd-V key combo you might find that that "seemingly nothing" is actually something. You will also find out what it is.
You can also run, in a terminal
    sudo dmesg
    (enter password when requested)
and see the entire boot process.
It's entirely possible that 10.5.5 does some extra things during boot. Updates are, after all, updates. This one takes nearly 1 GB of disk space so it must be doing something.

  • Screen Darkens When Dropping File on Dock Icon

    Hello:
    This is my first post.
I've been a Mac evangelist since I first started using them in Prepress in 1987.
But there is a feature in Snow Leopard that I absolutely cannot abide.
It's the way the display darkens to a vignetted area in the middle of the screen EVERY time I drop a file on a dock icon. Sometimes it seems to "stick' on this display for a second or two. Sometimes the display darkens and there is a blue Windows-like edge to the dark screen. I hate it.
In a production environment this weird feature is a serious interruption. I can't imagine ANYONE wanting it, requesting it or dreaming it up--even if they are a home user. What useful purpose could this "feature" possibly serve?
Please, please if there is anyone out there who can help me kill this "feature" forever, please give me a hand. Is this Dock Expose gone awry? I have looked up and found all the Kill Dock Expose commands there are out there and none of them work. This horrible "feature" just keeps on going like the ******* EverReady bunny.
It wastes an hour of work time every week if all the seconds it wastes are added up.
Is there anyone out there who can help?
Hoping for freedom from this "feature" in 2001....

Thanks, bd, but I have long since turned off the side buttons in System Prefs in an attempt to stop this from happening.... Also, it doesn't just happen on my machine. I take care of all the Macs here [15] and I can get any of them to do it if I drag a file to a dock icon and hold it over the icon long enough...mine just seems to do it instantly.

  • Remove Dock Icon

Is it possible to remove the Virtualbox icon from the Dock while it's running?
    Thanks for the help.

Perhaps the question was too vague and that's why there has been no response. Or maybe nobody knows. Let me try to elaborate.
I run Virtualbox with a guest OS on my iMac. Unfortunately there is no way to easily remove the dock icon from the dock while the application is running. It's rather useless and a waist of space to have the icon in the dock with OSX 10.7 or 10.8. Mission Control and Command+Tab offer easy ways to switch to the desktop with the VM. So that being said I would very much like to remove the dock icon for this application but I can't seem to find any relevant information about this process on the Internet.
Does anyone know of a way to remove the dock icon of a running application from the dock? Perhaps a terminal command that will do the job or a different application. Any input will help. Thanks.

  • Invisible dock icons

    Hello.
I'm experiencing a rather strange problem on my MacBook (OS X 10.6.3). The application icons for TextEdit and System Preferences are invisible. I can scroll over them, and open and close them, but the icons do not appear.
What can possibly be wrong here?
    Sincerely, S. Murthy.

That sometimes happens to me, but usually when I move apps around and the dock icon looses it's link or some other reason. In any case, what I do and it seems to work for me, is hit option/command then esc' and the window that open is a list of all running apps in your dock. select finder and click restart this will restart finder. You can also use this method to force quit an app if it doesn't stop. Hope this helps, G.

  • Lost wallpaer and dock icon after boot

Sometimes during boot a fray bar appears, like when I update EFI and after boot I have lost wallpaer and dock icon.
In that case I have to reboot and during boot the gray bar does not appear and I get my wallpaper back but the dock is empty.

    Hi
Did you remove the preferences folder or the preferences within that folder from /Users/Home/Library? If you have not then perhaps something has happened to your drive/directory that seems to have affected only that part of your system - unlikely but possible. Do you have a backup?
I don't know how SuperDuper works having never used it but can you recreate your backup sets from the backups themselves?

  • Date displayed on dock icon

    Hi All,
This is just a little thing which isn't really that important but thought it would be useful to ask.
Is there a way to display the current date on the dock icon for ICal BEFORE opening the application?
My dock icon always shows the last date that I opened the app and then is updated to the current date after i open and close the app.
    Is this possible?
    Cheers.

    TheFollans,
The behavior which you report is default. There is no way to change it.
    I have placed iCal in my Login Items (System Preferences...>Accounts>My Account>Login Items>Hide [✓ ]).
iCal is always available for use and the date in the Dock is always correct. I can switch to iCal at any time and when I am done consulting iCal I use the (⌘+H) command to hide iCal without quitting.
You can submit OS X Feedback with your personal recommendation for your desired method of implementation.

  • Lock Dock?!

Is it possible to lock my dock items?!
Im forever accidentally dragging items out of my dock by accident (for one reason or the other) and of course I never know which ones they were!
    thanks for your help!

The "Dock" can be locked to prevent the accidental removal of items as you described. Try opening "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering these two commands:<pre>defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool true
osascript -e 'tell application "Dock" to quit'</pre>To unlock it again, just repeat the commands, using "false" instead of true.
I don't have "Tiger" so I don't know where things stand now, but in early versions of "Tiger", there was a bug so that it was possible to intentionally bypass this setting using the "Remove from Dock" contextual menu item - so this method would no longer work (as it does in "Panther") to prevent tampering with the "Dock" . But for preventing accidental drags, it should be fine.
