Possible to Merge Aperture Libraries?

My wife and I each have our own aperture libraries that we edit photos with on separate computers. Is there a way to merge these? A good majority of the photos are duplicates, so I don't want to just export all of one and import them into the other.
Thanks for any insight.

Sorry but I am unclear on the question. What, exactly, do you mean by merge?
If you want to synch two Libraries, Aperture does not currently allow that. It sounds like you want a multi-user system, and in the area of DAM such systems typically cost 10x what a single user system costs so be careful what you wish for.
However, IMO a single-user two-computer solution is badly needed. Go to "Feedback" under the Aperture menu and ask Apple to formally faciltate the synching of a laptop and a desktop computer.
Your best workaround may be to create and share Projects between the two computers.
Good luck!

  • Unsupported image format after merging aperture libraries

I've experienced a large number of files with 'unsupported image format' after merging aperture libraries from separate external hard drives.  I did not have this problem in either library prior to merging them.  Can anyone advise how to rectify this issue?  Thanks

Try running  library repair on the merged library and see if that helps.
To run the repair open Aperture while holding the option and command keys down. Select Repair from the menu.
Post back if you still have the problem.

  • I merged Aperture libraries, Now I have a duplicate library!

I recently bought and 'am starting to work my way through "Aperture 3" Apple Pro Training Series, book.  In the course of attempting to merge the "sample" library with my already established Aperture Library, I now find that I have achieved this, but I also have 2 identical libraries, Projects, Pictures, Folders, everything, that appear when I open Aperture!  Is there a way to 'delete' one of these without doing damage to the other?  Thanks, Vic

I have one library with everything duplicated in it.
Then the merging did not recognize the original image files as duplicates. Apertures notion of duplicate is very limited - only files with everything identical (name, size, format) are considered to be duplicates.
There is no built-in feature to detect and remove duplicates. You will need to do it manually, and frankly, it might be easier to restore the previous version of your library (before you merged) from the backup and to start from there again.
But if you have invested to much additional work already, create a backup before you start deleting.
It is hard for me to give advice on what you can delete and what not, since I cannot know exactly, how you did merge the libraries and what you see as duplicates.
You cand delete projects, if you see a second project that contains similar images. Compare the resolutions of the images and the states of the edits, to be sure to keep the best versions with your recents edits, when you delete the duplicates. Be careful not to mistake images in an albums as duplicates of images in project. The gray icons in the library Inspector can easily be confused.

  • How do I merge Aperture libraries?

On rather poor advice, I started splitting my Aperture library by year -- I did this by setting up a smart album for each year and clicking "Export > Smart Album as New Library..."
I now want to merge them back together but am not sure how.
I am also concerned about losing data when merging libraries. When I migrated from iPhoto, not all of my photos got transferred, and now that I've split my library I'm not 100% confident that all of my photos are there either. For example, my "2008" smart album in my main library has 9702 photos but the 2008 library I created only has 9691 items. Is there any possible explanation for this?

What version of Aperture? If it's Aperture 3 then it's simply File -> Import -> Library/Project

  • Why is there missing EXIF metadata after merging aperture libraries?

I had an old library and a new library. All metadata and files were fine in the respective libraries.
After importing one into the other, I am missing all EXIF metadata like Camera, Lens, ISO, Aperture, Focal Length.
Anyone experience this problem or have any ideas?

    FIXED!
I waited this long for a simple fix:
Select all the photos, control-click on a photo and select Update from Original.

  • Merging Aperture Libraries?

I keep my Aperture Library on my iMac at home. I will be travelling abroad this year for a month and will be using Aperture on my Macbook Pro to manage the millions of photos that I will be taking. When I return, can I merge the library created on the Macbook Pro (with all the adjustments made to the photos) with my main library on the iMac.

    No real simple way, but
    1. While in your travel library, export your projects, making sure to consolidate the images.
    2. Import the project into your at home library.
Not sure how you will be storing your images while traveling, but I carry with me two or more Western Digital passport drives and make duplicate copies of all the images on two different drives. One or both of those drives could be exported/consolidated images project files once you have completed your work on them so 1/2 the work is already done when you get home.

  • Possible to merge 2 libraries in iPhoto 8?

I accidentally crated a new library in iPhoto that has 2 months pictures in it. Those 2 months are between the dates of the photos in my main library. Any way to merge them or otherwise get the pics from the smaller library into the larger one as Originals, not aliases?

Just read some of the documentation on iPLM. It specifically mentions iPhoto v.7 and has an update note on an upgrade when v.9 comes out, but doesn't mention v.8, which is what I'm using. I assume iPLM works fine w/v.8, but just wanted to make sure. Do you, Terrence, or anyone else know?
    Thanks much.

  • Is Therea Way to merge all my iPhoto/Aperture Libraries"

After many years and thousands of photos, I have found myself with many photo libraries, Is there a way to merge them all? this would be very, very helpful if it was possible.

The only way to merge iPhoto Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
You can't merge Aperture and iPhoto Libraries, you can import iPhoto Libraries to Aperture. There are ways to merge Aperture Libraries if you're running Aperture 3 or later.

  • Possible to use iPhoto 9.3 to merge iPhoto & Aperture libraries?

i use aperature to edit and organize. i'd like to export certain projects as individual libraries so that i can send to family members (via shared dropbox folder) so they can easily add to their iPhoto library without having to re-organize, assign faces, locations, etc.
i know it's now possible to do this aperture 3.3 [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5296], however who i'd like to send to only use iPhoto. Any ideas or workarounds?

No. Importing Libraries as projects are Aperture only features.
However, they could use the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager  to merge the Libraries.

  • Merging of multiple aperture libraries into one master library

Over the years, due to limited disk space on my Mac, I ended up having now 3 aperture libraries in 3 separate external hard drive, totaling between he 3 libraries over 2TB of photo storage. I just purchased an additional 4TB external drive (my 4th external hard drive from Lacie) to put ALL my separate Aperture libraries into ONE (1) master Aperture library. I would like to know if anyone could help me with a set of step by step instructions to MERGE my 3 separate Aperture libraries into ONE (1) MASTER library on my newly purchased 4TB external drive. I've looked online and found several articles dealing with merging libraries from multiple computers. I tried them all and was NOT able to do what I would like to do. PLEASE, if any of you have done what I would love to do or knows how to do it, I would appreciate your help. A step by step instructions regarding how to do it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much! Robert

    Thanks Kieby,
This is what I did: 1.) File/Swith to Library/Other/New  To create a new Aperture library which I called MasterAperture Library. The new library was created on my new 4TB external driver.
2.) I then CLOSED Aperture and re-opened it using my default Aperture library located on my Picture folder (Aperture Library).
3.) I did: File/Export/Project as new Library. I chose my external hard drive with the filename: MAsterAperture Library, EXPORT.
The first time I did that nothing happened, I still had an empty MasterAperture Library files without any pictures.
Then I did the same thing thing, except this time, I high lighted my first Projects and went down to my items on my albums and then CTL-H so everthing would be high lighted (ALl my projects and all my albums). Then I did step 3 to the MasterAperture Library and I was able to get the MasterAperture Library as an image copy of the content of the Aperture Library located on my Pictures folder.
Then another problem came up, when I tried to replicateduplicate the same steps outlined above to merge my other 2 remaining libraries, I could NOT do so because the process, at that time, told me that the file MasterAperture Library already exists and if I were to continue, the content of MasterAperture Library will be replaced. Of course this is not wantt. I would like to be able to MERGE the contents of the 2 or 3 remaining libraries that I have currently located in different external drive/locations into the file MasterAperture Library located on my 4TB external drive, and do so, if possible, without too many duplications (if possible, because if I have to remove duplicated projects/albums/photos later, I am willing to do so)!. By the way, I've read the Aperture userguide more than once and have tried the approaches suggested in the guide without succes yet. Thanks again for your kind help. Regards, Bob

  • What's the best way to merge, restore or reconstruct iPhoto and Aperture libraries to resolve images that are not found/offline?

    Hey there, Apple Support Communities.
To start, I'm working on a MBP Retina 15" with a 2.3GHz i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM.  10GB free on a 256GB SS HD.  Attached are two external HDs - one 1TB Western Digital portable drive from 2011, one 2TB Porsche LaCie non-portable drive from 2013; both connected via USB.  All photo libraries in question are on the external drives.
I have Aperture 3.5.1 and iPhoto 9.5.1.  I prefer to work in Aperture.
    The Issue(s)
Over the years, I have accumulated a number of iPhoto libraries and Aperture libraries.  At one point, I thought my WD drive was dying so I purchased the LaCie and copied all libraries over the the LaCie drive.  (Turns out, there's probably an issue with my USB port reading drives, because I can once again see the WD drive and occasionally I can't see the LaCie drive.)
So now I have old version of some libraries on the WD drive, and new versions on the LaCie drive.
When I was moving things, I ran the software Gemini to de-dupe my iPhoto libraries.  Not sure what effect that may have had on my issues.
In my main Aperture library and in some iPhoto libraries, I get the image-not-found badge or exclamation point.  I've dug through the hidden Masters folders in various libraries to find the original image.  In some cases, I have been able to find the original image, sometimes in a different version of the iPhoto library.
    My Question(s)
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
    2.  For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
    3.  Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
TL;DR: Too many iPhoto and Aperture libraries, and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
Thank you!  Let me know if you need add'l info to offer advice.
    With appreciation,
    Christie

That will not be an easy task, Christie.
I am afraid, your cleaning session with Gemini may have actually removed originals. I have never used this duplicate finder tool, but other posters here reported problems. Gemini seems to replace duplicate original files in photo libraries by links, and this way, deleting images can cause the references for other images to break. And Aperture does not follow symbolic links - at least, I could never get it to find original files this way, when I experimented with this.
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
You have to find the originals yourself. If you can find them or restore them from a backup, Aperture can reconnect them. The reconnect panel can show you, where the originals are supposed to be, so youcan see the filename and make a Spotlight search.
For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
Make a copy of the missing original you found in a folder outside the iPhoto library. You can either open the iPhoto library in Aperture and use "File > Locate Referenced file" to reconnect the originals, or simply reimport them. Then Lift&Stamp all adjustments and metadata to the reimported version.
See this manual page on how to reconnect originals:  Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images  (the paragraph:  Reconnecting Missing or Offline Referenced Images)
Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
References images will stay referenced, managed will remain managed. You need to unhide all hidden photos in iPhoto - this cannot be done in Aperture.
and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
That is probably due to Gemini's replacing duplicate originals by links, and your best cause of action is to fix this before merging the libraries. Reconnecting can be done for your iPhoto libraries in Aperture.

  • Merge iPhoto and Aperture libraries?

I boght Aperture and as I was installing it, I made the wrong choice when it asked me if I wanted to merge the iPhoto library with the Aperture library. I can't figure out how to do that after the fact. Do I need to reinstall Aperture?

I can't figure out how to do that after the fact. Do I need to reinstall Aperture?
No, you don't. Aperture can now merge any iPhoto Library into the Aperture Library.
But do you really need to merge the Libraries? If you want, you can keep the libraries separate. iPhoto can now open Aperture libraries, and iPhoto can open Aperture Libraries. You can switch between Aperture and iPhoto any time from within Aperture.
    But back to your question:
    To merge the Libraries
open your iPhoto library at least once in iPhoto 9.4 to upgrade it. Quit iPhoto.
Open your Aperture Library in Aperture.
From Aperture's main menu bar use the command "File > Import > Library" and select your iPhoto.
When prompted if you want to "merge" or "add" duplicate library items, select "merge".
    Good Luck

  • Merging iPhoto Libraries into Aperture, How?

I want to merge 6 iPhoto Libraries in my new iMac straight into my newly bought Aperture. All have been opened in Aperture.
I am assuming that onced merged I can then dip into my large Aperture library wherever I like, quickly and easily.
Yesterday I merged 3 libraries into Aperture. Today I opened a different iPhoto library and then looked for my merged library.
I can't find it and assume I'm missing a vital step. Poring over forums has made it no clearer.
What have I done wrong or missed?

I am not sure how you have tried to merge your iPhoto Libraries. Have you seen this help text?
Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
basically, you open an Aperture library, and then use the Aperture command "File > Import > Library" to import your iPhoto Libraries,  Simply opening the iPhoto Libraries in Aperture will not consolidate them into one libraray - you have to import them.

  • Can two Aperture libraries be merged?

I have two computers and want to combine my Aperture libraries. Can that be done?
    Thanks

    "File→Import→Library/Project"
Instructions are on this page in the User Manual.
After you merge one Library into another, use only the combined Library.
