Possible to mix SAS and SATA in S10?

The S10 I purchased has the 146GB SAS drive attached to the LSI controller. I see in the hardware reference manual that there are spare SATA ports on the main board. Can I mix SAS and SATA drives on this machine if I am *not* using them in a RAID array? Does the fact that the SAS and SATA are likely to have different rotational speeds mean that I need to be worried about vibration/stability issues?

SAS and SATA can definitely coexist. rotational speeds won't matter as the drives are harmonically dampened in their trays. in fact, i have three 15,000 RPM SAS drives sandwiching two 7200 RPM SAS drives in my D10 and can't feel any vibration in any of them. i've also hot-plugged SATA hard drives onto the intel controller with no issues.

Hello All,
I just wanted to follow up with an update on my progress.
I put the 2TB drive back in and I did a green field build from media and everything went fine.
I went into the bios and flushed the device configurations. Some of the documentation that I was able to find suggest that you need to perform a low level format but I did not have to do that.
The data channel speed will not go past 1.5GB but the drive that I have is a 6 GB SATA drive. I only hoped to get 3 GB like the SAS drive.
The system with the SATA drive seems to be slower to boot and sluggish. I will try to take some timings and post as I think I want to try to run this machine with mixed disk. If the SAS drives are going to give me faster boots, I will populate slots 1 and 2 with SAS and the rest with SATA for data.

both SAS and SATA arrays are supported simultaneously on the PHYs but it's not recommended to mix the two within an array (ie: creating a SAS+SATA disk RAID 1). per your question you can have a SAS+SAS RAID 1 plus a SATA+SATA RAID 1 concurrently on the LSI 1078 chipset.

No, there is no chance to do this.
You can only use the "Textobjekt" to mix italic and non-italic fonts.

Sas and sata on ultra 40 m2

I have an Ultra 40 M2 workstation with 2 SAS drives 15K, configured as an integrated stripping.
Can I add other 2 regular SATA drives?
should I buy some adapters?
last question, if i put 4 drives in stripping I/O will gain or degrade performance?

My experiences with NVRAID are with a Tyan S2915 (nForce Pro 3600 + 3050) where I have a mirror, running Windows XP Pro, and an Asus M2N32SLI Vista Premium Edition (nForce 590SLI) with 4 disk striping and Windows XP x64. The striping with 4 disk on the Asus board is fanatastic (200 MB/s sequential writes), but I am not sure if it is also due to the 8 GB system memory and thus a big file system cache. Take note, NVRAID is limited to 2 TB, so for the Asus board I did the trick of creating two Strips (1.36 TB), then striping the two NVRAID stripes in Windows to get 2.72 TB.
But in general you can do stripping in the OS, you do not really need any special support in the controller.

Possible to mix renderers and editors?

Currently, I have an Accordion with a number of data grids
that contain different information. Items can be dragged from any

upper limit, I want a text input field to appear.

Solaris 10 u11 : Is it possible to mix IPMP with vertual network interface

I have a system with 4 Ethernet interfaces , I'd like to try to have virtual network interface on two of them . then configure IPMP between each two.
- Is it possible to mix IPMP and VNIC ?
- online , I found posts about having vnic on solaris by creating additional interface file (ex, /etc/hostname.bge0:1 ) and also the IPMP create such interface?
- How can I know which IPMP version installed on the system ? and how to know I'm reading the right configuration guide?
- on what basis should i choose the type of IPMP for my system (Link-based or Probe-based)

IPMP can coexist with VNIC.
IPMP - part of Solaris. So you not need check version of IPMP. Just read Docs for Solaris.

It's not clear what Vnic you plan use. Is it VLAN or just additional IP on interface ?
For test address of IPMP you should configure interface like bge0:1 with additional options.

Yes, but it will look like crud. This question gets asked a bunch so there are lots of responses out there explaining why this will be the case.

Yes, cropping and/or reducing the size for internet or intranet distribution can be accomplished using Compressor or QTPro.

answering this question isn't easy as there are a lot of variables that go into both SAS and SATA drives.   if you're looking for a specific recommendation, it would help to know how you intend to use these drives.
SAS drives come in two sizes (2.5" and 3.5") and three speeds (7200 RPM, 10,000 RPM, and 15,000 RPM).   some drives are built for low-power draw and others are built purely for performance.   some are built simply to hold raw data where others are built for 24/7 operation in a server environment.
SATA drives come in a range of sizes and speeds with the fastest being 10,000 RPM.   very few SATA drives are rated to be run in a RAID configuration and even less are rated to be used in a 24/7 environment.
both SAS and SATA are offered in 3 Gb/sec and 6 Gb/sec versions, although most single drives are lucky to exceed 150 MB/sec.   high-end SSDs, on the other hand, are close to saturating 3 Gb/sec in synthetic benchmarks.
i suggest visiting both hitachigst.com and seagate.com and browsing through the drives they offer.   sites like storagereview.com can help with individual drive reviews.

Mixing music and audio books

Is it possible to mix music and audio books on the same iPod and yet shuffle the music but not include the audio books when playing? If so how do I do it?

You can right-click on an audiobook, choose Get Info,
and checkmark "Skip when shuffling" on the Options
tab. This is not necessary on true audiobook files
(.aa, .m4b), as those are skipped automatically, but
it's useful for mp3 files.

Mix published and unpublished events in one calendar?

Just got an iPhone.
Is there a way to mix published and unpublished events in one calendar?
I've heard that other calendar software have this option.
With iCal on a Mac it's possible to choose which calendars to view, so then it's not a problem to have one published and one unpublished calendar.
But with iCal on iPhone you can only choose between viewing ONE and ALL calendars.
I subscribe to a bunch of other peoples calendars, so viewing ALL is never an option..
So now I would like to write all my events, published and private, into ONE calendar. Is that possible?

Yes. I tried changing the setting to Sync All Events (instead of the time limited sync) and let it refresh. No change. No display
I also tried rescheduling the event by one hour on the same day (no other changes), then save. No change. No display.
I ended up deleting the events and re-entering them, with identical information (including the recurring end date, remarks, etc., you name it), and then the events appeared like the rest of them in the same calendar.
I'd still like to know if there is a solution to the original problem. I'm still concerned that other events, maybe in the other calendar as well, are no appearing and it's impossible to rely on a sample or to verify every event.

Mixing public and private networks on the same switch

Hello Everyone,
I know this may get some security engineers in frenzy but wanted to know if there is a safe way to mix public and private networks on the same switch.
We have many remote offices that we want to add public wifi and a couple of other services that would be completely outside of our internal network. Each office has a 3750 with plenty of open ports. How can I safely create a vlan for public access on these switches which currently have our internal network on. I have read that people are doing this to save on the cost of purchasing a dedicated switch. Some people are using access lists and one person mentioned creating a private vlan for the public network. I looked up private vlan and it seemed bit confusing.
Is this recommended? If not what would be the safest way to do this?

How "safe" is relative. If your running just one VLAN on a switch, that's would be the safest (basically the same as mixing traffic on the same wire - separation is done else where).
If you multiple VLANs on a switch, then you need to determine how likely someone might figure out a way to breach the VLAN barriers. (This isn't so easy on newer switches.) If the VLAN isolation is breeched, then you need to examine what does that imply from a security perspective (for example can someone now inject or receive other VLAN traffic).
For most purposes, I don't see mixing public and private VLANs, alone, on the same switch as much of a risk. More of a concern is what can be reached on either VLAN and how well it's protected.

D20 now only available with Windows and SATA...??

As of this morning, the Lenovo Thinkstation D20 on the US site is only available with Windows and SATA hard drives. It used to have SAS drives and DOS available.
They may just be low on inventory, or maybe... ?

Kind of funny you mention this as a few of my team members and I were digging through the CTO site today. Considering the crazy number of various parts/options that we have qualified for the S/C/D 20 platforms, there are a ton of omissions on the CTO site. I know they pull some various options from time to time because of inventory or end of life concerns, but the configs that were showing up today as available really made no sense. Unfortunately there's not a lot I can do from my side to get this resolved other than raise the complaint. I'll see what I can do though.
