Possible to move 1/2 of library to ext. HD?

Hi,
My powerbook is full... I'd like to move a chunk of my music over to my external harddrive but retain my favourite stuff on the laptop for portability. I'd really rather not lose my ratings and playlists. Calling all clever people out there... any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Jamie

In theory, if you are NOT "Copying Music Files To Computer When Adding To Library", then the files themselves can reside anywhere. The Library ends up just a list of pointers so to speak.
So conceivably, one could add tunes to his/her library from a external HD, and as long as it is mounted before trying to play a song in the library who's data file is on the remote drive, all should be good.
As for moving a chunk over, that is easy. Retaining the play-counts, etc... I am not sure how to deal with that.

Is it possible to move Flickr set form one iPhoto Library to another?
    Thanks very much,

Maybe - a Flickr set is a special kind of album - maybe iPhoto Library Manager can do that - check it out and ask the authors - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/

  • How can I move my old iPhoto library into a Referenced Library format and use that as my default?

Hi, I have been using iPhoto for photo management where all the jpegs have been living, in organized events by date and subject for some time. I recently upgraded to aperture and am using the same iPhoto library. The issue I have is that I use Carbonite for my cloud back up and I am able to look at the pictures I have on my PC with the same folder organization I have them on my PC hard drive. This is apparently not possible for iPhoto library. The only way to access a picture on the iPhoto library in the cloud is to go through the master and hope you can find the specific picture since they are not organized in a comprehensible manner (like events or folders) in there.
So the only solution I can think of is to move the current iPhoto library to a referenced image library and use that as my default library from now on. This way I get cloud access and the events will hopefully turn into folders with dates and subjects that I can continue to keep organized to satisfy my OCD tendencies.
So the question I have is that:
    1. How can I make a reference Library for Aperture/iPhoto?
    2. How do I move the current library to the Referenced Library in an Organized manner? My wish list would be a series of folders labeled with the date and the subject, like I have in my iPhoto library right now.
    3. If there is any alternative, your suggestions and recommendations would be much appreciated.
My computer: Mac Mini (Mid 2012), Lion, 16GB RAM.
    Thank you kindly,

Or is there a way to go through aperture to make a new reference library that I can move the masters into later?
you do not move the masters into a references library - you turn your current library into a referenced library.  As Terence Devlin said:
    File -> Relocate Masters
    What you should set up:
Select a folder, where you want to store your referenced files - probably on an external drive.
Decide on a hierarchical folder structure inside this folder - that is completely up to you.
Select a project from your library and use the command "File -> Relocate Masters/Originals" to move the original image files to the folder where you want to go them to. Only take care not to send two projects to the same folder.
Alternatively, if you do not care about the folder structure Aperture will use, select all images at once from the "Photos" view and let Aperture decide how to assing the folders - in the "Relocate Originals" dialoge you can specify a subfolder format.

  • HT3819 How do I share just one movie (not my entire library) from my itunes library with an authorized computer using home sharing?

How do I share just one movie (not my entire library) from my itunes library with an authorized computer using home sharing?

    many thanks.
    That should be possible.
From his library connect to your library via Home Sharing.
Select the name of the shared library in the source pane of your itunes, and click on the wee disclosure triangle to the left of the name of the library. Does "Films" appear beneath the name of the library?
    Here's a screenshot of what I mean.
Select "Films". In the right-hand pane you should see the item you want to transfer. Just select that item, and click "Import".
Use the same basic technique to get one or a few songs from your library transferred to his library. (The only difference is that you would have "Music" selected instead of "Films".
If you don't want him to have access to other items in your library, you could just switch Home Sharing off on his library after you've done the transfers.

  • How do I play all my Movies from the iTunes'  Library?

How do I play all the Movies from within my LIBRARY without having to click PLAY everytime on each individual movie? All my movies in the Library have the check marks on them already.
When I play my "Music" LIBRARY, as soon as a song is over the next one starts up. Fine. Great! But, the same is not happening from within my "Movies" LIBRARY.
This play-all-Movies type of action works fine from within each of my playlists. Once selected a movie to play from any playlist, other movies will keep on playing, one after another, until told to stop. But, I also would like to play all movies from my library.
It would seem redundant to copy my entire library into a single playlist just to have this function available. Besides, every time I would add a new movie to the library, I would also have to remember to add it to said playlist.
Could anyone, please, tell me if it is possible to play all movies from within the LIBRARY? (iTunes v.8.01).

Thanks for your prompt reply, Meg. I've applied exactly your "smart playlist" directions (always wondered what that "smart playlist" was for while it worked wonders! Great going.

  • Want to "move back" my iPhoto library +photos

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and after reading a lot of pages I canot find any answer to my question !!
I changed my HD on my MBP (I have now a 320Go) and wanted to "get back" from an external HD, my iPhoto library and my files with originals photos wich have not been "imported" into iPhoto : menu "prefs/advanced/Import/copy in the iPhoto library is not checked".
I hope my explanations are OK !!
    thanks

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
my iPhoto library and my files with originals photos wich have not been "imported" into iPhoto : menu "prefs/advanced/Import/copy in the iPhoto library is not checked".
You are running a referenced library - which is not recommended for a number of reasons including it makes things like new hard drives and computers more difficult
One way to accomplish your desired move is to use alias herder - http://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/downloads/aliasherder/ - to convert your library to a managed library - then you can simply quit iPhoto and drag the library where ever you want it and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and point to it
Since the key to a referenced library is that the path to the photos does not change it may be possible to move the referenced library to your internal drive leaving the original photos where they are - I've not seen this but it seems that it might work - easy to give a try - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library to the pictures folder on the internal drive and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key - if it works you have a partial solution - if it does not simply launch iPhoto with the option key and point back to the library that still exists on the EHD and delete the one you just moved to the internal drive
And note that you have imported your photos into iPhoto - you simply have not copied the originals to the iphoto library - the importing process is much more than just copying the photo - it involved updating all of the iPhoto database pointers

  • HT1751 Question: Is it possible to move just part of my iTunes content (i.e. TV shows) to an external harddrive, keeping the rest of the content in place?  Several seasons of TV shows are taking up 102 GB of space, and I'm completely out of space on my HD

Is it possible to move just part of my iTunes content (i.e., only TV shows), keeping the rest of the Library in place?  I have purchased several seasons of some TV shows, which take up 102 GB on my harddrive, inside my iTunes Media Folder.  I don't want to move my entire Library of music and apps etc to the external harddrive (HD), but I rarely watch the TV shows, so wouldn't mind them being located on an external HD, which I would plug in before trying to watch the shows through iTunes?
    Any advice?
    Thanks!

I don't think you can simultaneously have two libraries open. But you can have your media spread across multiple disk drives. Just change your iTunes preferences such that the option "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is not selected. That way, new items can remain on your external drive if that's where you add them from.
The only caution is if you ever add items to your library from some "temporary" location, such as a USB drive. With these preference changes, iTunes would keep the native file on the USB drive, which would possibly lead to you deleting the file and losing the link. So, when you have your preferences to allow you to add new items to iTunes without copying them to the iTunes Music folder, you would want to put the native files in the desired location first, then add to iTunes.
To move existing videos and podcasts to the external drive, you can either do that as you have been (moving the native files and correcting the ! warning), or simply delete them from the library (but keep the native files) then re-add them from their new location on the external drive (you'd lose play history and ratings though, but may not be an issue for videos and podcasts).

  • Move pictures to Aperture library

First, let me say that if this question has been previously answered, then my apologies. However, here is my problem.
I have imported 200 pictures, that I have edited and placed in stacks. But now I see that under the import, the pictures where placed in the pictures folder, not in my Aperture library as I wanted.
Is it possible to move these pictures to the Aperture library without loosing my stacks and my changes?
I have the lastest vertion of Aperture

If you imported images and did not choose to reference them and leave the masters where they were, these masters are in the library. It sounds like they were placed in an untitled folder. You can re-name the folder to whatever you like.

  • I saved a backup on my iMac. Is it possible to "move" this backup to another computer, so i can connect my iPhone to my new computer and restore all things on my iPhone?

I used to have an iPhone full of all the greatest pictures of my life, the apps i enjoyed the most, and all my numbers to my friends and so on.
Now i have to change computer (The iMac still works) and i wonder, is it possible to move the backup (whereever it is found on the computer) from the iMac and put it onto my new HP laptop?
IF YES: Where is the backup file saved on the iMac?

If you still have the iPhone just download iTunes for Windows and sync your iPhone (do one last sync with the Mac first).  To answer your question the location on your Mac for your media is at /Users/yournamehere/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music  Your contacts and pictures would need to be exported from iPhoto and the app you were using as your contact manager (Address Book, Outlook)  The backup file is located at /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

  • Is it at all possible to move ipod music from a mac to a pc?

...without a CD burner on the mac?
    Here's the problem...
My son wants to burn a CD of some of his ipod music. We had originally intalled the ipod on a mac. However, the mac disk is full, and we haven't been able to install an external cd burner.
We have several pcs with cd burners, so I thought I could move the music over to the pc using the ipod. It did create a "shared" library, but you can't do anything with that but listen to it. I reformatted the ipod to pc format, but can't put the music back on the ipod.
I should be able to reformat the ipod back to mac, then reload the songs on there, but unless I can free up enough space to load the cd burner software, I'm kind of out of luck?

"is it at all possible to move ipod music from a mac to a pc?"
Windows can't read the HFS+ file system that a Mac uses.
If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • Is it possible to move Multiple playlists into a Folder at once?

I have hundreds upon hundreds of playlists dating back years. As a non forward thinker I've created most of the in the 'root' of the Music Library.
I'm attempting to organize into Playlist Folders & the one at a time drag n drop is a little tedious. Any way to select/move multiple playlists at once?
    Thanks in advance!

You can't select multiple playlists. It should be possible to move them into or between playlist folders by way of a script, but I suspect that is just exchanging one laborious task for another.

  • Is it possible to move a movie rental from my iPod back to my MacBook?

Is it possible to move a movie rental from my iPod back to my MacBook?

    To elaborate on my question...
I have iPod Touch 4thG and MacBook.  I rented a movie with the MacBook and then transferred it to my iPod.  I want to transfer it back to the MacBook but I am unable to do so.
This does not seem to be true:
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
I used File>Transfer Purchases From iPod  and everything purchased EXCEPT the movie was transferred to the MacBook.
I cannot simply select the movie on my iPod and move it to the MacBook.  That does not work, and there is not cut/paste option avaiable either as far as I can see.
What is the trick to doing this transfer?

  • Possible to move boot display to different DVI port? (GTX780)

I doubt this is possible, but just in case : is it possible to force boot screens to a different port on the video card?
The MSI GTX780 has two DVI ports - one DVI-I (which includes analog display) and DVI-D (which does not). The DVI-I port displays the boot screen, BIOS, and anything that shows before Windows is fully loaded.
I currently have two monitors. My primary monitor can connect via DVI, and since it is a 120HZ monitor, it currently uses a dual link cable. The secondary monitor is older and cannot connect via DVI, so I use a DVI-I-to-VGA adapter and a standard VGA cable for that display. Unfortunately, this means that the secondary monitor shows boot/BIOS/etc.
Is it possible to move the boot display to the DVI-D port on the card?
Please note that this is not a big issue - having the secondary monitor show boot info is a minor annoyance at worst. The secondary monitor also has HDMI-in, so I can buy a cable and use that, and then move the primary monitor to the DVI-I port. I do want to avoid spending more money, but mostly, I want to see if it is possible to force the boot screens to another port. This seems like it might be a very interesting way to learn about the video card (and VBIOS, if changing that is necessary to do this).
    Thank you.

In the "Arrangement" pane of "Displays" System Preference, drag the picture of the menu bar to the picture of the other display.
