Possible to "push" App updates to iPads?

We want to hand out 30 iPads to students, preconfigured with purchased Apps at the beginning of the semester for the entire semester. Invariably there are frequent important updates to Apps. Is there any way to update the Apps remotely using the  iPhone Configuration Utility? Otherwise it seems that the only way to do it is to provide each student with our iTunes Store account.
It may be possible to block new purchases but allow updates, but we would rather push them to the devices. Can't find this option in the iPhone Config Utility.
Not sure if purchasing the Apps through the Apple Volume Purchase Program complicates the situation or not.
Thanking anyone for ideas.

We decided it's just easier this time to give each student an iTunes Store gift cart for the amount of apps we want them to buy, rounded up to the nearest amount available.
There is the new App Store Volume Purchasing Plan for Business, which might have been useful, but don't have time to set it up! May be good for others, and makes it much easier to distribute apps.

In the above two scenarios, individuals still need their own iTunes Store account, and will have to update their own apps, which in all honesty is not all that difficult. Anyone can start an account without a charge card, see here

Why can't I see reviews for app updates on iPad 3rd gen since iOS 7 update?

AAfter an hour with Apple chat, I figured out what to do on my own.  When the iPhone and iPad go to autolock, press home key and do not open- streaming will be on the screen and I turned it back on.  No more stops.

  • Pushing App Updates through Profile Manager

We are currently using Lion Server's builtin Profile Manager to manage a variety of iPads. I have been able to use it to push out new apps to the end users however I have not figured out a way to push out app updates. Is this possible?
For example our student iPads have Evernote ver. 4.1.9 currently installed. I would like to upgrade them to ver. 4.4.0. If I delete the the current Evernote app from the iPad I am able to then push the updated version. If I try to simply overwrite it the task appears to have worked from the view of the Profile Manager but the new version of the app is not installed on the iPad.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I found the problem.  The device group that the laptop in question was assigned to also has an option for fast user switching that was not enabled.  I enabled it there and the problem was resolved.

  • How to stop iPhone app updating on iPad

I installed the Ebay app on my iPad - it was the yellow one for phone and pad. It worked fine. A few weeks later they released an iPad version which I downloaded just fine and deleted the iPhone version from the iPad.
Now of course the iPad wants to update the old version even though I've deleted it from the iPad. I can't delete it from iTunes because it's on my iPhone.
Anyone got any ideas how to stop it asking to update on the iPad?

You can view the last 90 days purchases on your account (and optionally contact iTunes Support if you have a problem with one of them) via http://reportaproblem.apple.com - that should let you see your in-app purchases, as well as other purchases (apps, music etc).
(You can only view your account's full purchase history via the Store > View Account menu option on a computer's iTunes.)

  • Sync app updates to iPad via USB: takes several tries; and weird automatic app deletions

Two odd sync behaviors--maybe connected, maybe not:
    1. Since updating to iOS 5 (and/or the version or two of iTunes) iTunes no longer syncs all my apps (updated on the Mac) to the iPad when I plug in. (I'm not using any kind of auto-downloading or iCloud; not enough space on the iPad for that. Nor am I using WiFi sync--just plain old plug-and-go.)
It syncs a few apps and gives no error, but then I notice that some apps remain non-updated. So I sync again... and a few more apps transfer. After 3-5 syncs, all my apps are up to date. Every time, unless it's just 1 or 2 updates, I must sync repeatedly.
    2. I'm set to sync manually only (not automatically when connected). So I click Sync, and the Sync button immediately turns to an Apply button--even though I have not changed anything. Then, after the sync (or syncs plural!) if I try to click away from the iPad panel to other parts of iTunes, OR if I try to quit iTunes, it asks if I want to Apply or cancel my changes. Umm... what changes? So I say Apply and it tells me it's going to delete some apps! (Apps which are indeed present on the Mac still, and which I want to keep.) So I cancel and all is well, except it's annoying, and risky if I ever accidentally do Apply. (I don't want to lose game progress or app data.) There's no space warning; I have ~2GB free and the apps it offers to remove seem pretty random to me.
So every time I'm done syncing, I must cancel the "Apply" for app removals I never asked for.
However, I AM still able to safely make changes I do want to apply: I must do them before the first sync, and then when I sync the changes (adding/removing apps, books, music, whatever) work just fine. Then afterward comes the Apply offer (deletion of apps) which I cancel.
    Any ideas on these issues?
I wiped the iPad and restored from backup; no difference. The iPad and iTunes are fully updated; no difference. (This happened through at least the last two versions of iTunes.) The Mac itself is running Leopard, but it does meets iTunes' requirements.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Cannot download app updates on iPad

When the App Screen indicates that an app has an update available I press the update button and the little circle appears and goes around and around but does not complete the download. Is my ipad broken or is there something i can try to fix this? I am an oldie learning new gadgets so i am pretty computer illiterate.

Here are some things that you can try. These have worked for others in the past. Don't forget that you can update the apps in iTunes on your computer and then sync the apps to the iPad.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.

  • Google map app update for IPAD??

Does anyone know when the the google maps App will be updated and available for the IPAD, since the Iphone update has been completed. thanks

Google's YouTube app was originally iPhone-only, but they made an iPad version about a month later. It's safe to assume that Google will do the same with its Maps app.

  • Stacked with apps' updates in iPad-2. WHAT HAPPENS?

People!!!!!, the updates of apps remain stacked for DAYS in the iPad-2. Please, please, please, find a solution hurry up!!!!!

You are not talking to Apple here - just other users like yourself.
Check Restrictions - Settings>General>Restrictions>On. If they are turned on you may have disabled downloading apps.
Check to see if you have a stalled download in iTunes - a song that did not finish downloading or a podcast perhaps. Finish those first if there is one in there.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Try signing out of your account and restart your iPad. Go to Settings>Store>Apple ID and tap the ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. Go back to Settings>Store> Apple ID and sign in again.
If you are getting the "waiting" icons - Tap on one of the "waiting" icons and see if you can get one of them to pause - then tap again to see if they will resume downloading.

  • While downloading app update on ipad lost internet connection and now the updates are not updating. How do I fix this?

While downloading a common application update, I lost my internet connection and now the updates are not updating. How do I fix this?

    Try this:
    •  Log out of your iTunes store account.  Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
    • Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
    • Then restart & see if you can update.

  • Is it possible to share aps between my iPad and iPhone, I have tried several methods yet I still get charged if I download an app I already have on my iPad.  many thanks, Alex

Is it possible to share apps from my iPad onto my new iPhone 4. I have tried several suggestions from the net but still get charged when I download an app to my phone that is already on my iPad.  Many thanks,  alex

    Greetings Alex,
You should be able to download the exact same app from the iTunes store to a different device at no extra cost.  Its possible you might be downloading an iPad only version of an app you happen to have on your iPhone although I'm not familiar with an example of this.
    If you are being charged:
    1. Make sure you are using the same iTunes Store account (AppleID) on both devices.  Your purchases are tied to the AppleID so if you don't use the same one to download the app that you used to buy it the first time,  you'll be charged.
On the device you originally bought the app in question:  Go to Settings > Store -- note the AppleID here
On the device you re-downloaded and were charged on:   Go to Settings > Store -- note the AppleID here
If these AppleIDs are different then you have your answer.  You are making purchases with two different accounts so logically you've been charged twice.  Decide which AppleID you wish to use from now on and on the device which does not currently have that ID and tap on it in the Store section of the settings and login with the other AppleID.
If these AppleIDs are the same then something is going wrong in the process.  Contact iTunes Store support email to have them take a peek: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/
    Hope that helps.

  • App update delay breaks system

Has anyone resolved the issue of releasing an app which communicates with a server and then having the server be updated immediately while the app takes weeks to appear in the app store?  It seems completely unreasonable to push app updates for larger app which are only a small part of a larger system and not have them immediately available.  Most of the time updates cause breaking changes and therefore the app and the server side need to be updated simultaneously.  This is impossible if app updates do not appear in the app store immediately.  Anyone have any ideas?

Join the club .. I've been trying to log into the App store since Lion was released .. Keeps telling me "an unknown error has occured"
I have no problem logging into Itunes , this discussion group .. etc.. just CANNOT LOG INTO APP STORE...
have tried everything from reloading Snow Leopard . to all the terminal changes that others have suggested ...
guess it's time for a new Macbook Pro...
    so weird...

Unfortunately, I lost by an update all the apps on my iPad 2. Now I can not pull the data from the cloud to my iPad. How is this possible?

If you just installed iCloud does that mean you updated the iOS that's running on your iPad?  If so, you'll want to restore all the programs you have from the backup you hopefully made.
Refer to these articles for help.
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software.
If you don't want to use iCloud, simply don't activate it.
You can also download the programs again.
If you live in a country that supports re-downloading apps then you can re-download them.  You can refer to this article for more help.
