Possible to put g5 or dual g4 processor in my MDD?

Hey, I have a bunch of G4 MDD powermacs that I got, all with dead powersupplies. I have gotten them running with modified ATX power supplies, but things seem a little sluggish. Each of these macs have the single 1.0 GHz processor, and I was wondering if it is possible swap out the processor for a better one, such as a dual processor G4, or even a G5 processor.
Is it doable?

Processors from faster MDDs would also work.
The faster MDDs have a higher bus speed, so the jumpers on the transplanted CPUs would need to be changed. Instructions are here.
If the jumpers are not changed, the CPUs would run at about 4/5 of their rated speed.

    If such an upgrade were possible, it probably would be more money than it would be worth.
    If you're running a G4 (dual-processor even) you can pick up a used Mac mini (intel that is, and something from 2010 or newer would be the best bet) that will be screaming fast compared to a G4.
    Once upon a time, processor upgrades were not only possible, but a good deal, and a relatively inexpensive way to get more life out of your Mac. I upgraded a G3 tower to a G4 for  few hundred dollars, and I was glad I went that route at the time. Finally,  CPU upgrades, at least as far as I know, aren't available anymore.

    Howdy folks.
    Just a quick question...is it possible to put a off-the-shelf notebook 200 or 300gig 7200rpm hard drive into my Mac Intel Dual core Mini? Are there heat issues with this speed drive and if not, can I get one at any Comp USA or C. City or Best Buy? (Right now my new Mini has an 5400 80gig drive in it.)
    Also, if I can do this can someone guide me to a site or an article on how to do this. Finally, will any type of notebook drive suffice or is there something I should look for as a specific type drive for the Mini?

    Wondering still however....any heat issues from a 7200 drive over a 5400, or is it a pretty much moot point?

    i have a computer (PC and Laptop) types with Dual-core processors, and am trying to do simulation using Multi-core technology and based on different simulation scenarios...starting from sequantial processing,.......Piple lining processing strategy. so that i can differentiate the time delay between those types of processing based on (Using 1 processor then dual-core processor Computers)
    my question is: As i read through Ni's white papers i saw many notes refer to Real-time execution trace toolkit to investigate the (processing-time , etc) of multi-core processors in processing diffenent algorithms. My algorithms are to be run on 1 computer with dual-core processor BUT, not in real time environments, that is ( No hardware to be connected to my pc) only algorithms running on my pc....
    So, is it possible to use Real time execution trace toolkit  or anyother tools in LabVIEW to show processing-delays and/or anyother timing critical issues without using my application for  real- time hardware.???
    in other words: how to use Real time execution trace toolkit  in non-hardware and/or real-time scenarios???
    please help me in this.
    Any suggestion, comments, feedback.....is absolutely highly appreciated

    The Realtime Execution Trace Toolkit only works for NI RT Targets.
    But you can use the Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit, just search for it under ni.com.

  • Uneven Core usage on dual core processor

    Hi there
    I noticed today whilst doing some video encoding (.TS files to .MP4) that my Mac Mini is not spreading the load over both of the cores in my dual core processor. Whilst Core 1 is showing nearly 100% Core 2 is hardly being used. Also I noticed that when the load on Core 1 dips then Core 2 will peak but as soon as the load goes back to Core 1 it will equally dip on Core 2 so essentially in Activity Monitor it looks like the core usage is a negative image of each other. The total CPU usage never peaked above 54%.
    Could this an indication of a failing CPU or is it a case of poor core management? The software I've been using is VLC Player and also iMagiConverter.

    What I don't understand is why software developers make software (especially video encoding that is all about CPU number crunching) that only utilises 50% of the CPU resources!
    There are any number of possible reasons, from an application using a cross-platform code base that doesn't lend itself well to mulitiprocessor optimization for a particular platform, to inexperienced programmers who don't well understand programming for parallel threads, to developers who just want to crank out an application as quickly as they can (iMagiConverter seems to sort of fall into that category, given the number of applications of a similar nature that the "company" has produced). You'd have to get involved in the project development to know for sure.

  • Jdeveloper dual core processor performance problem

    I have a dual core 2.4 ghz processor and 2 gig of ram and Im running Jdevloper 9.0.5.2 and my performace is terrible. Other developers in the company have non-dual core processors and they can start up in debug mode using the Jdeveloper embedded oc4j our application in 10 seconds where it takes me 4 min!!!!! It is a struts,ejb web application. Is there anything I can do to help in debug mode??? cheers.

    Which version of McAfee are you using?
    On my (personal) laptop, I'm using McAfee VirusScan 9.0.10. I don't frequently run JDeveloper on this laptop, but when I do, it's not experiencing signficant startup delays (it's a very low power machine: PIII 650 512Mb)
    McAfee VirusScan seems to have very few configuration options (noticably different from Norton, which I use on my corporate desktop machine). I specifically remember changing the "File Types to Scan" option to "Program files and documents only". You can get to this by right clicking the "M" notification area icon, VirusScan->Options menu, Advanced button on the ActiveShield page.
    In Norton, I think I have it configured so that it only scans files on write rather than on read. I also exclude directories which contain jdeveloper installs or other large Java apps (although scanning only on write elliminates most of the performance problems anyway and still leaves your system reasonably secure).
    The easiest way to convince your MIS dept that the virus checker is the source of your problems might be if you ask them to allow you to turn it off in order to test the difference it makes to performance. It's a reasonable request to make if you're trying to elliminate possible causes for the slowdown (from the description you gave, it does sound like the AV upgrade is the first place I'd start looking).
    If the virus checker is the source of your problems, you'll probably be seeing massive slowness in most large Java applications that have a large number of JARs on their classpath.

    I have a Dual 2.3 GHz G5 tower at home and a Dual-Core Intel Xenon 2.66 GHz in my office. I'm trying to troubleshoot my office HD and wanted to work on it at home. Is it possible to put my office HD into the spare drive bay in my home machine?
    Really all I want to do is use SuperDuper to make a clone of my office drive, but it takes like 5 hours to complete this task and was hoping to set it up before going to bed and having it finished when I wake up. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    You must be trying to use USB2 if it takes 5 hrs, or you have 500GB of actual data.
    Instead of popping it inside I'd just get a FW800 case or kit for easy connection.
    It might be best to run Disk Warrior (4.1.1+) or maybe address what/why it needs troubleshooting. But I would never rely on or trust Apple DU First Aid to diagnose a hard drive, let alone fix any problem.

    The first thing to note is that in a multi-user system you can get dupilcates when you use "max(number) + 1". A sequence would be better.
    The second thing to note is that this
    select ('CM'||(nvl(max(Customer_Number),0)+1))
    into :booking.customer_number from booking;will fail once a record is inserted into the booking table. It's the equivalent of this query:
    SELECT 'CM1'+1 FROM dual;
    Thirdly, the query will not get the largest number. It will consider CM2 to be greater than CM1029837639827638437635385926589236487256437.
    If all the records will be prefixed with CM then you can use
    Select 'CM'||my_sequence.nextval from dual;
    or use
    Select my_sequence.nextval from dual;
    and add the 'CM' when you report the data.
    If there can be more than one prefix and the system will never be used by more than one person at a time then you can use something like

  • Upgrading Dual 450 Processor

    Good day all!
    I would like to upgrade the dual 450 processor in my G4(Gigabit Ethernet) to at least a dual 1gig. I know the MDD's don't/can't work, but what about other used apple processors (ie. quicksilver or the like)?
    I would like to keep the parts apple and although they are more rare than the MDD's they still pop up now and again.
    Are there any issues/limitations?

    The CPU upgrades database at www.xlr8yourmac.com is a useful place to look for information on processor upgrades. If you select Apple for the card manufacturer, you'll see reports from people who have used processor daughter cards pulled from other Macs.
    Like you say, processor cards pulled from a MDD or FW800 won't work due to architectural differences such as the use of DDR RAM.
    I believe it's technically possible to use a processor card pulled from a QuickSilver or Digital Audio, although it involves a lot of effort.
    Firstly the bus multiplier on the processor card must be increased to take into account the difference in bus speed, which involves adding and/or removing resistors. For example, a 1GHz processor from a Quicksilver will have the bus multiplier set to 7.5 (7.5 x 133.33MHz = 1GHz). In a Gigabit Ethernet with a 100MHz bus the processor would run at 750MHz, unless the multipler is increased to 10.
    Secondly Quicksilver processor cards require a 12 volt feed to one of the screws which secure it to the logic board, although this can be taken from a spare hard drive molex power connector.
    Thirdly the Quicksilver processor cards and heat sinks are physically larger and in the Quicksilver are located in a different position on the logic board. When they're installed in a Gigabit Ethernet I think the card interferes with the ATA connector for the optical drive, and the heat sink may prevent the case from closing, unless both are modified.
    Fourthly I have a feeling any level 3 cache may not be recognised, as the Gigabit Ethernets and Quicksilvers shipped with different G4 variants.
    In short it may be easier just to use a third party upgrade. They're available from the following companies amongst others:

  • Is it possible to put form fields on layers in Acrobat?

    I am creating evaluation forms that have 3 layers. Basically, on page 1 there are 3 buttons for the apprpriate category, and each button turns on a specific layer. The following pages have information to be filled out based on which category layer is selected on page 1.
    I've created the documents in Indesign with layers and so far exporting the document and layer buttons works fine . . . I just have to assign the layer action in Acrobat to the buttons. But, when it comes to creating the form fields, I can't figure out how to create them on a layer. When I go into form field editing I lose my layer panel and when I can see the layer panel, turning layers on and off does not affect the fields.
    Is it possible to put fillable form fields on layers, so I could have different fields visible based on what layer is showing?

    So, if I learn to create this script, can I have multiple sets of fields stacked on top of each other that can be shown/hidden along with the rest of the layer by pressing a button?

    I was unaware of this change for usb support! However Babowa makes a good point in that you would probably not want to run SL via USB and rather Firewire.
    Having said that, the 13" MacBooks do not have firewire.
    But again as Babowa points out, that machine wouldn't be able to run Lion anyway.
