Possible to run Windows on USB 3.0 drive using Bootcamp?

Hi guys,
I am planning to buy the entry Mac Pro soon.
I am pretty used to OSX and love to work with it but want to play a game sometimes, and thats where I need windows.
I dont want to fill my Macs SSD with different partitions and stuff, so I planned to get a 128GB usb-stick/external-drive with fast read/write performance (min 70mb/s write, 120mb/s read). The performance should easy be on par with a classic HDD. I can also format the drive to use every filesystem I want it to use.
Is it possible to install Windows8 on such a usb-drive using BootCamp? Does it accept the external usb drive to install a partition on and boot from it?
I found very different opinions to this.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Kev

Okay,
I did some more research on my own.
It is possible according to this posts: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5127978 (Strange: you responded to that posting yourself).
All you need is a external thunderbold drive and a copy of Winclone. (https://twocanoes.com/winclone/)
Then follow this 7 steps and you are fine: http://dadhacks.dadpower.net/post/47998058347/set-up-bootcamp-on-an-external-thu nderbolt-drive
Thank you,

  • Windows won't install any drivers using BootCamp

I'm new to using a Mac (I bought an aluminum 2.0GHz MacBook last month). I need to run Windows on it, and tested in using BootCamp, but I cannot get the Windows XP drivers to work at all. No drivers have been installed for networking, chipset, sound, video, etc.) The device manager shows almost no drivers installed. It is Windows XP SP3 as well. I have also tested this on two other Macs, with the same results. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for any replies received.

If you have Auto-run enabled (not always a good idea though) it will still open to
/BootCamp folder with Apple Setup.exe to install the drivers and services to add compatibility.
I think Windows Update, esp. now with v. 7 RC1, it finds even 3rd party drivers for me and less trouble, something OS X doesn't provide.
But the step for inserting your DVD.... that is in the Boot Camp Guide and pdf.

  • Can the Mac Pro run Window XP (booth camp) and be used as a MAc OS server

    Hi There
Can the Mac Pro run Window XP (booth camp) and be used as a MAc OS server in the same time?
I am a small business and I was thinking of using the new mac pro for a new workstation on my studio and to also use it as a server for 5 work others stations. Is that possible? Or I am asking a bit to much work load to do for the Mac Pro?
Can the Mac Pro can run under Window XP and Autocad and still be accessed by other workstation whilst working on the cad software? Is booth camp will slow the machine like Virtual PC?
IS the MAc Pro can manage file hosting website with PHP and mySQL capabilites?

Not sure about the CD burning issue but you can turn off the listing of your past purchases. Edit > Preferences > Store > Untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.

What is best solution to keep running itunes normally in the future & get the CD/DVD drive working again? if I delete the upper / lower registry keys what other functions are impacted? Are you talking about a Bootcamp partition? You can't boot Windows from an external drive.

  • Has anyone figured a way to use the Magic Trackpad with Windows 7 on a partitioned disc using Bootcamp?

Has anyone figured a way to use the magic trackpad with Windows 7 on a partitioned disc using Bootcamp?

Yes. After Windows/Bootcamp discovers  your bluetooth device (Magic Trackpad or Mouse, be sure to make it discoverable), right click, with your wired mouse, of course, on the icon and select Properties.
Then check the mouse drivers box and your device should work. (I located this solution on another thread)
It works for both the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad.
Must admit, the solution was not intuitive within the Windows environment. But we all must remember. It IS Windows, after all.
Another thing. Keep in mind that the gestures on these devices that work just dandy in OSX do not carry over into Windows.
    It's Windows.

  • Run Windows on external Thunderbolt hard drive possible?

I just got a 256GB rMBP and would like to run Windows (via Bootcamp) next to OS X for a few 3D apps. I'd love to have the 256GB internal flash drive for OS X exclusivley.
So I wonder if it's possible to install and run Windows 7 on a external SSD that I connect via Thunderbolt so I can keep my built-in flash drive free from Windows.
    Thanks!

the answer is NOT to run Windows in its own space on an external, but to get Paralells from the Apple Store $100 approx and get the helpful peeps at the store to migrate your old windows to your MBP Retina. Paralells is the best part of Mac which IMHO should be the backbone or shipped with every new Mac, esp for peeps that have a lot of expensive WIndows software, Win EXCEL ACCESS WORD, Adobe, GPS and the like.
Once set up rightly its very hard to know if your in windows running Mac or Mac running windows. Will also boot VMs ( Virtual machines) in linux ubuntu or whatever without restarting...
Running any major OS like OS 10.8  or Win 8 is not recommended from an exteranl as performance will suffer
Note: Do not upgrade to Windows 8 pro from an update disk as MS allows only one end user per licence, ( some other more expensive option is required) Even if you have installed Win 8 Pro do a roll back and migate from there. The peeps at the Apple shop may have a smooth solution
    Hope this helps Robbo

  • Is it possible to run windows apps?

... Without running windows on my iBook G4? I would like to run 2 apps: Digidesigns D-Show and another very small app. I have searched and searched, and the only solution I can find is to emulate windows, but I don't have access to a version of windows. So is there any way to run windows apps without running windows OS?

    Rune:
I needed to run a software package for business but did not want to buy a PC. So I installed Virtual PC (not the demo linked here) and run it on my Pismo. It is not super fast, but it does the job. It comes with Windowns XP Professional. A bit costly, though, unless you can pick up a copy like on eBay.
    Good luck.

  • Is it possible to install Windows 8 on a new MBP through Bootcamp?

My new MBP has no CD slot obviously - anyone able to install from the cloud? USB?

You can install Windows 8 on a new MacBook Pro without any problem. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
On Macs without a SuperDrive, you have two options to install Windows:
    1. Buy Windows on a DVD and an external optical drive, connect it and use it to install Windows.
    2. Purchase Windows from the Microsoft Store or any other shop that offers it as a download, burn the file downloaded into a USB drive with Boot Camp Assistant, and install Windows with the USB drive.
To install Windows 8, you need a full version, so the only possibility is to get it on a DVD and use an external optical drive to install it. If you want all the steps to install Windows 8 through Boot Camp, follow these steps > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • Run windows 7 on external hard drive?

I'm purchasing a MAC mini to replace my G4 and PC. I would like to have Windows available for several applications (mainly for the kids) and am wondering if I could install windows on an external hard drive and run it through the Mini. I really don't want to partition the Mini's HD for both OS as I prefer to stay as far away from windows as possible. Thanks.

It all depends on the PC motherboard and BIOS, I don't even think MS has done anything draconian or such, and it is possible and actually easy, with the right X58 say motherboards (most). My Intel DX58SO I used to install via built in eSATA.
There is nothing wrong with or reason to fear Windows, but if kids want to play games, a VM isn't going to cut it. Buy a cheap mini just for Windows, or a PC, or run OS X off external drive and use the internal for Windows only.
Windows 7 + MS Security Essentials is solid and best yet and as easy to use and not all that different than Mac OS (and maybe has had more testing even). Hopefully computers can be seen for what they are, used as tools, objectively.
