Possible to spin down external drives individually?

I have 2 external LaCie Mini firewire drives called to my Mini.
Is it possible to spin down 1 of the 2 drive instead of all drives. In the everygy saving manual, there is no option to choose individual drives but only all or nothing.

I don't believe this is possible with anything Apple provides. The commands exist to tell a particular drive to spin down, or to set time-to-spindown for some models, but I know of no OS X software that provides a way to send these commands to the drive.
Usually, if this capability is provided, it is provided through utilities supplied by the drive maker. Unfortunately, I haven't seen anything like this for Macs since the days of OS 9 & SCSI drives.

Yes, many people do just that. Copy your iTunes folder to the external drive. Once done, open iTunes with Option held down and select the new location of the library file.

  • Lenovo Iomega 70A29000EA - does Twonky block spin-down of drives

    Hi team,
I am concerned that my NAS never spins down the drives (current setting is 15 mins), can you please advise on how I can check if it does and whether the twonky settings or remote access (I am not using the personal cloud but I access it through my static ip) somehow affect that?
I always thought that the NAS will go to sleep and wake-on-lan or soemthing whenever accessed remotely
    thanks

    Hello tournas
Having Twonky (media server) enabled on the NAS or linking the NAS to a desktop version of Twonky server can cause the energy savings configuration to be ignored.
Normally personal cloud would also cause the same situation, however if you have not configured your device for personal cloud or have your cloud disabled there should not be a problem.  Manually connecting via the external ip would not affect the energy savings.
Other items to check on this would be Active folders from the Shares page and Torrents(transmission).  If those options are enabled and or in use they could prevent the energy savings to work.
In some cases having shares mapped/mounted to a client desktop/workstation can prevent the energy savings from working as well.   You may also want to try cycling all of the protocols off/on in case a protocol happens to be malfunctioning.

  • Possible? Password protecting external drives

Is it possible to make all external drives password protected to make changes to, or even access? I can't find anything obvious particularly in "disc utility" or elsewhere.
    Thanks, Chris

No, OS X provides no such facility. You can get third-party software that can do that. Look for it at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
What you can do instead is to create an encrypted disc image using Disk Utility and put the image on the external drive. Then move whatever you want secured onto the disc image file. Delete the originals. When the disc image is mounted it will require a password to access whatever is stored on it. If you want to be able read and write data on the disc image then make it a read/write image file when you create it.

  • Time machine keeps spinning my external drive up and down...

What's the reason for this madness? It spins my external hard drive up and down continuously, even when I'm not using the machine! My computer is in my room it's waking me up because it clicks every time it spins up or down.
I'm also concerned this will effect the life of the hard drive. It's a continuous cycle, it spins down for about 20 minutes at a time, then spins back up for about about 20 minutes, then again... So much stopping and starting continuously can't be good for the drive.
What's causing my machine to think it needs to back itself up even when I'm not using it?

Because it does a backup every hour maybe?
Even when you are not using it.
Just because you are not using it doesn't mean that new files aren't being created or destroyed, which may need to be backed up.
It would perhaps be nice to be able to configure the frequency of the backups.
I have three machines backing up to the same backup drive, which keeps it pretty much always humming. I would consider dropping the frequency on a couple of the lesser used ones down to a backup every few hours, or even once a day.
    Cheers, Ed.

  • Spinning down external hard drives

A while back I wrote a little app called sumount, for safely unmounting usb hard drives.  While try to make it work a little more reliably, I came across hd-idle.  Hd-idle does a fantastic job, much better than my little hacky script.
I've requested my app be deleted from the AUR (it is stupid and redundant), and am posting this to the forum so the four people who use it know to switch :-)

The drive will spin down if Energy Saver tells it do so in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver. I have found though, spinning down an external hard drive sometimes is not desired because Energy Saver may not be able to give back all the power the drive desires when it wakes up. This can lead to an improperly dismounted volume causing occasional directory damage. My suggestion is to simply dismount it, and leave Disk Utility up so you can mount it again. Disk Utility is in Applications -> Utilities folder.

  • Is it possible to keep an external drive in standby when computer wakes up?

    Hello:
I've recently started using SuperDuper! as my backup application. I've setup scheduled backups to an external hard drive. I keep this drive unmounted, yet still powered on and connected to my computer. The schedule in SuperDuper! mounts the drive to perform a backup and unmounts it when finished. While the drive is not in use, it is in standby mode, which is exactly what I want. There's no sense in having it running full throttle when I'm not using it. I have "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" checked in the System Preferences. Unfortunately this has proven to not be the answer to my issue.
My question revolves around if there is a way to keep this external drive in standby mode when I wake my computer from sleep mode? When I wake my computer, the external drive also wakes. Though it remains unmounted and I am not attempting access it, it still powers up and out of standby mode. I'd love a way to prevent this from happening. Is it possible?
Understandably, the only other time (besides during backup) the external drive is knocked out of standby mode is when I open Disk Utility. It makes sense because DU is actually attempting to communicate with any connected drives. I'm confused on why waking the computer also wakes the external.
I appreciate any and all support!
    Many thanks.

    baltwo/Stanley:
Thanks for your comments. I know the computer attempts to communicate with all attached devices. I guess I was hoping that there was a way for the computer to know the external drive was connected and that it could communicate with it without having to actually spin-up the external disk.
Stanley, you're right. I shouldn't worry about this. I suppose the reason is because the external is my only backup, and I'd like to maintain the integrity of it so it lasts as long as possible. But, on the other hand, it is a hard disk. They're made to spin...
I appreciate the feedback, again, baltwo and Stanley.

  • Is it possible to connect an external drive to the time capsule that I could use to store and access my primary iTunes files?

I would like to move my music files to an external drive that my iMac iTunes could access wirelessly and I'm wondering if it is possible to do so through connecting a drive to my Time Capsule.

This can be done....but if you move your iTunes Media folder to the drive that is connected to the Time Capsule, you might first want to think about how you will backup these important files.
Time Machine cannot backup the files back to the Time Capsule, so you will need to use a commercial backup application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to copy the files back to the Time Capsule drive.
As long as you plan to add a hard drive, you might want to consider an alternate plan:
Connect a hard drive directly to your Mac using USB or FireWire and move the iTunes Media Library there. Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive, so you have original copies on one drive and backups on another.
Whatever you decide, be sure to follow the correct instructions to move the iTunes Media Folder. You cannot simply drag and drop.

  • Manually spin down hard drive

Is there a way in Mavericks to manually spin down a hard drive? I run my system, applications and store most of my data on a large SSD, but I have a 1TB HDD in the opitcal bay of my MacBook Pro.  The HDD is not needed much, but it does spin at times more than needed.  From an energy savings standpoint, I was wondering if there is a way in Mavericks or a widget to manually spin the drive down?  Thanks!

Sorry, I meant to say the traditional platter 1TB HDD is in the standard Hard drive bay.  I have the SSD in the optical bay.

  • WRT610N with power saving spin down hard drive

    Hi,
Has anyone used the WRT610N with a storage drive that auto spins down?  I find the router works fine accessing the HDD until left idle when the HDD spins down.  The next time I try to access the HDD and of course there's a lag as the drive spins back up, I get some type of freezing, usually the USB light on the router turns off, the HDD light stays on and the router loses connection the HDD.
    Any help here???
Also, despite gigabit ethernet and 802.11n speeds, I get around 2 Mb/s speeds to the USB storage port.  A little slow no???
Yes, I have the latest firmware.

Connect your HDD directly to a computer and check if you face the same problem, I think there is a problem with your HDD...

  • Is it possible to remount an external drive without restarting?

I'm a video editor .. and have as many as 5 external drives connected to my G5 at all times. Ocassionally I eject one or two hoping to add a little speed to my work, if they are drives I don't need at that time. Sometimes, I need to remount a drive or two. Since they are all connected to each other, I can't simply turn it off and on to remount it.
Also sometimes, I eject the drives still on the desktop and then toggle the drive at the top of the chain to remount them all. Sometimes, this works. Very often, it does not.
I spent MANY years cutting on AVID and I remember that there was a way to remount ejected drives ... maybe, it was part of that software. But I can't remember specifically.
Lately (as in the last couple of days) I'm finding that my drives are very tempermental and tho they are all on and connected when i turn the machine on... a few will not mount. When I open DIsk Utility the unseen drives are not listed. And, in my most recent case, the drives that are unavailable are the drives at the top of the chain. So that tells me the cables are good... since the computer can read the drives at the end of the chain.
My projects are "Ultra Low Budget" and so i am using drives that are available and on sale when the need arises which means they are different manufacturers: Seagate, LaCie, Maxtor (2) and G-Tech (2). 250, 500, 750 Gigs and 1TB (2). All are formatted HFS+ and all have mounted easily at the same time ... until today.
I just checked System Profiler and all the unmounted drives are listed in the "Firewire" profile but as "Unknown". When I click on any --- I can see the various connection speeds but no other information.
I have 2 internal Hard Drives connected -- Serial ATA: 160G and 200G. Both are MacOs 10.4.11
If the external drives were simply ejected --- can I mount them from the Finder?
and in the current situation: Is there any other info I can look up to help figure out why they aren't mounting automatically?
    thanks,
    ana

    The drives that aren't mounting are a G-Tech 1TB FW/eSATA and 2 Maxtor One-Touch 750G.
the G-tech has been connected to my computer using the 800 has been mounting without incident until about 6 hours ago ...output and the Maxtor drives are FW 400. one of the Maxtor drives started acting up 2 days ago but mounted earlier today. The second Maxtor hasn't been included in the chain for months ... its never mounted since I reconnected it this afternoon.
I've experienced the LaCie power source debacle ... I thought it was an isolated problem. But this particular drive has been very reliable.
pardon my ignorance but --- what is a "simple unmount" --- it sounds like its what I should be doing instead of my habit of dragging to the trash ...
Thanks so much for answering my post.

  • Possible to slow down the drives?

On windows you can use a utility called "Drivespeed" to slow down the drive and make it silent.
Its annoying when Im watching a DivX burnt on a CD/DVD and it makes so much noise when its reading.
Is there any way to do this on a Mac?

First of all, this problem can only be associated to a broken instrument. The instrument itself controls how fast data is sent to it on the bus. That is the primary purpose of the interlocked 3-wire handshake.
If the device is unable to accept any more data (buffer-full), it can assert the NRFD line to indicate it is not ready for data. In fact, it is only allowed to deassert NRFD when it is actually ready for data.
For command transfers, the device is only supposed to deassert NDAC after it has accepted and processed the command byte on the bus.
If this device (or any other) is deasserting NRFD when it is not ready or NDAC when it has not processed a byte it is broken.
One other option available to help communicate to a b
roken instrument is to increase the cable lenght. This adds propegation delays that can sometimes "fix" a broken instrument. I have personally seen an 8-meter cable fix a similar problem. (The device got fancy and deasserted NRFD before it was ready, anticipating that the controller would take a "long" time to change the DIO lines. With new controllers and computers, the DIO lines were changed before the device latched the data, confusing the device.
    Hope this helps...

  • Want to stop apps from spinning up external drives

I have found that Aperture will always try to spin up my external FW drive that I only mount at night for backups. Anyone know why Aperture does this or how to stop it?
As well, software update and Disk Utility also do this, but I can almost understand them doing it.
    Cheers

Disconnect the drive when it's not in use.
Don't want to have to do that either
I assumed but thought it might help someone who may be browsing through with a similar issue.
I will try the Aperture group too....
If you get a solution or helpful info there, you may want to revisit this thread and post a link to it.

  • Is it possible to rename an external drive without wiping it?

    Hello
One of my three external USB drives houses my iTunes library. However, I originally intended to use this drive for backup, so I called it 'Time Machine' when I originally formatted it. I have now bought another drive for backup, so would like to change the name of the first drive, without causing either iTunes or the Mac OS to have a nervous breakdown. What should/ can I do?
    Thanks

    Hello, Cameron.
I think you could just rename the drive in Finder and then change the location of your iTunes library to it's location on the renamed drive.
When iTunes cannot find your library on the drive with the old name, it will ask you to either create a new library or choose an existing library, so you will want to choose your existing library on your renamed disk.
I hope this answers your question.
    Good luck!
