Possible to streamline all buddy lists (jabber+aim+bonjour) to single?

Is it possible within leopard iChat to streamline all of my account buddy lists to a single list rather than having multiple windows - similar to the way Adium allows?

Not the Buddy Lists in iChat 4.
The Chats (text) yes.
However you can use the Jabber side and arrange for a AIM transport and put all your contacts in the Jabber Buddy list.

  • Messages/Jabber: Clean up messy Buddy Lists and start over

    Basics
Running Mac OS X Server 10.8.2
    Messages (Jabber) turned On
We are not chatting with anyone outside our Jabber server
    Problem
Over time duplicate users have shown up on clients buddy lists
Some users display as "Not authoirzed"
Some client's Buddy Lists show old users that have since been removed
    Questions
How do I wiipe all Buddy Lists clean? (I am okay with deleting database and starting over if it doesn't affect anything outside of Messages)
I have checked "Make group members Messages buddies" in the group that I want to auto-populate for everyone after I clear all the Buddy Lists. How do I make this happen after I clear everyone's Buddy Lists?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you very much

  • Company is merging with another company. How do I add other company's Bonjour/Messenger buddy list to our company's Bonjour/Messenger buddy list?

So the company I work for is merging with another company. Our company already has an internal Bonjour/Messages set up so that we can all communicate to each other. The company that we're merging with has the same.
How do I merge their Bonjour/Messenger Buddy List with our Bonjour/Messenger Buddy List so it's all in one list?
    Much thanks!!!

    Hi,
It will depend how and where the other computers are.
Broadly speaking any Mac computer on the same LAN using iChat or Messages with the Bonjour account enabled will see all the other Macs (The app reads the computer User's Contacts App (Address Book) My Card and broadcasts the name)
This works up to the point you go beyond 255 computers or devices.
The router will have one IP allowing for 255 devices to be connected.
    To state this another way.
The Bonjour account in Messages or iChat is a self connecting, self populating Buddy list.
Your Name is read from the Address Book on older systems or the Contacts app in Mountain Lion and above  at the one called the My Card and this is broadcast as your "Screen Name".
You see the names in the Buddy list that correspond to other peoples My Card.
On this iMac I am using I am "Ralph Johns"
On my G4 tower I am "Ralph G4" and on my laptop I am "Ralph MacBook Pro"
This means if I hook up the three using Bonjour I know which is which.
(As an aside this also allows me to separate them out on AIM and Jabber lists as well as I have the My Card for this computer and Address Cards for each others)

  • Ichat opens but no buddy list

When I open my ichat application, ichat shows up in the menu bar with all of the options, but my buddy list no longer shows up. I'm guessing I'm also not signed on. Help!! It was working fine yesterday, so I don't know what changed.

    Hey, thanks for replying.
I'm going to take this bit by bit.
-So iChat Launches and appears in the Menu bar.
-The Buddy List does not Appear.
-The Window menu in the Menu bar does not list the Screen name and a KeyStroke option.
Yes to all of these, this is exactly the case.
-Going to iChat menu and the Accounts option there does not show any Buddy List ?
    -Not even Bonjour ?
Yes, there is no Buddy List, not even Bonjour.
-In that case is the iChat > Preferences > Accounts showing any Screen Names/Accounts set up ?
-(I see on second reading you say this option appears greyed out)
Indeed, preferences will not open. I even tried using the hot key :'(.
-Ok go to your Home Folder
    -Open the Library/Prefernces
-Set the view option in the FINDER to Columns and then Use the Quick Look option on
    - com.apple.ichat.plist
-Near the top does this show any Account Sort Order ?
-Does it list the correct number of Accounts ? (you will only see code for them not names)
Wow, handy feature. Yes, three lines after account sort order it has a chain of about 15 numbers, and then after that is a list of my available and away messages. There is only one chain - and that makes sense, I only have one account. Appearently I can set my available message under ichat > My Status, but I can't set it to an away message.
-Repeat the Quick Look on the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist
-Does this show one account at least ?
Yes, it shows one account (or at least I assume so - it's another much longer chain of letters and numbers).
-Make sure you Own the files still be doing a Get Info on them (Apple Key and I together)
I'm afraid I don't catch your meaning here. I have one of those new keyboards and there's no apple key - but there is a command key which I assume is the same. Anywho, I did the command-i thing and I can't find a place where it says if I 'Own'. It does mention that I can read and write on both though.
-I would also check the Users Folder and check you have not had more Mac User Accounts added.
The things in my users folder is my Account and the shared folder.
-I would also check System Preferences > Accounts and make sure you are still an Admin account -and no-one has set Parental controls on your account.
I appear to still be admin and I don't see any parental controls.
Hope that helps. I feel like I've tried everything. I always seem to have bad luck with electronics . I'll keep trying to see what I can find out.
    Thanks,
    Dark

  • Buddies are online, but show up in my buddy list as offline

I have kept my OS and all Apple software up to date.  I am not sure when this changed, but now in iChat, even though I know my buddies are online, and I am logged in and my statuus is set to available, they all show up as offline in my buddy list.  I show up as offline in their buddy list.  We can chat and video chat, which I do not think should be the case, but we cannot share screens which we used to be able to do.
    Any ideas what is happening?

    HI,
It would seem that one end or the other is somehow signalling that it is set to Invisible.
If, with AIM Logins (AIM, @mac.com and MobileMe), you set the status to Invisible you should be able to "See" your Buddies as On-line where as they cannot (they see you as Off Line if they display Off Line Buddies).
However at this point you can Send Text Messages (invites) and Audio Only and Video Invites and chat in all methods if they accept.
(I must admit to not having tried Invisible and Screen Sharing)
It could be that both ends have set Invisible.
More likely it is a "flagging" issue against each account on the AIM Server.
I would go to iChat > Preferences > General Section and Unlink the Buddy list you have logged in
Check the Status of each (And where it is set in any to "Be the Same in All Buddy Lists")
It seems the Yahoo account if you have one will do "Invisible" but will also tend to override the settings of other Buddy Lists.
After that I would rotate the status of all the AIM logins you have from whatever it is now to Invisible and then back to Available.

  • How can I see my jabber buddy list as a default and not a new message window on my message app??

I recently got my OS reinstalled and since then I had a multitude of issues.
    1) my texts kept showing up on my macbook pro so I took my cell number off the preferences on messages on macbook.  Can I still have people facetime me using my cell phone number?
    2) I do see my jabber buddy list when I click on the message center as a default.  I keep getting the new message window, can i set a default that when i click on it I see who is online vs. having to go to windows and select buddy list all the time??
    3) what is bonjour and why would i want to use it?

    Hi,
    Re 1)
The settings for Messages > iMessages are separate from the FaceTime ones on both Mac and iOS devices.
    Re 2)
If you have a Jabber (Google or Facebook Chats included) ID in Messages > Preferences > Accounts you can go to the Window Menu and display them.
By default they are a combined list (Any AIM, Jabber, Yahoo or Bonjour account that is logged in)
In the Preference > General section you can untick the item that gathers them into one list to show them separately.
They also appear in the Window Menu separately with their open CMD + # keystrokes.
Once you have them On show quit the app that way.
It will "Remember" that they were on Show the next time you open the app.
    Re 3)
Bonjour is a process on the Mac that "sees" all other Macs on your LAN and shows them in the Side bar of the Finder window as "automatic" Shares.
In iChat and Messages it is an included account that cannot be deleted
If Enabled it can have it's own Buddy List (see 2) )
It shows the Names of the peopel singed in on the other Macs on your LAN that are also using iChat or Messages with the Bonjour Account Enabled.
The name is taken from the My Card in the Address Book or Contacts app.
The My Card should have the Mac User's details (you on Your computer when Logged in) and a head and Shoulders icon.
    I have three computers
One is running iChat 4.x.x and on that machine (running Leopard) the My Card calls me Ralph G4 as it is running on G4 tower.
My Laptop has me as Ralph MacBook Pro
This iMac I am posting from has the My Card of Ralph Johns
On this computer if I have iChat running on the other I see Ralph G4 and Ralph MacBook Pro as "Buddies"
It can do everything that the AIM and Jabber logins can do.
Text Chat, Audio Only Chat, Video Chat, Screen Sharing, File Transfers etc.

  • In Messages, all of my buddies have disappeared from the buddy list.  ***?

I video chat with a friend using Messages and suddenly my buddy list is empty .... no buddies.  We both use AIM.  What gives?

    Hi,
Your Buddy List is kept on the Server for AIM.
This does mean that if you have two Logins at the same time it is pretty much impossible to do anything with the Buddy List as the other login will tend to "Correct" things.
This can mean if the second login is set to Invisible then all your Buddies will appear Off line.  (if one login does get full dominance).
You may end up with a situation where neither login maintains dominance and you may only see those Buddies that are Off line at their ends but not see the ones that are ON line either.
However this is only a possible outcome and would take loads of testing over different types of login to see if it were possible.
Other Login include Different apps on the same Mac
The same and different apps on different computers.
    PC logins.
    Logins via iOS devices
Logins on other type of phones
    Web Browser logins.
You can also test non Apple IDs on this page https://settings.aim.com/
Apple IDs (@mac.com, @me.com linked to iCloud and @icloud.com IDs)  use a sort of two pass Login to AIM and Apple to use the Apple Password for the IDs to work.
This now excludes the use of @mac.com name on earlier versions of iChat.
The iMessages account uses an Apple ID.
It appears that it does have to be an iCloud variant (new Apple IDs are automatically iCloud ones but older ones may not be).
The ID does NOT have to be the one used in the iCloud Setting.
In fact iTunes and App Store are best served by the same ID but they can be different (it requires two payment methods).  FaceTime and Messages (iMessages Account) are also best served by the same ID as you can switch to Video or Audio in FaceTime from the iMessages account. Again they can be different and you could be using 4 different IDs up to here.
Then there is the iCloud settings in System Preferences the links to iPhoto, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Notes and so on (BUT NOT iMessages) that syncs those apps with your other Macs and iOS devices.
Your Apple ID used in iMessages needs to be able to check the password at Apple and if it is the same one you use for iCloud that is a close as it gets.
The iCloud server could crash but iMessages would handle it's own login.
(If the server Apple uses for Apple IDs in general were to crash that is a different story but that is going to be a server farm an unlikely to fail in that sense.)
If your iCloud Account is syncing Contacts then all the devices that are linked to that need to be still syncing.
It is a bit unclear if one device is a Master device or if the list is completely moved to the iCloud servers.
I have found if the Sync is turned Off on my Mac there is no Local Contacts List.
However whilst you might not see First Name Last Names (or your choice) in the Buddy Lists you should still see the AIM names (AOL or AIM IDs/Screen Names and other Apple ID used as AIM names)
Checking on the AIM Settings page may also reveal if the account you have with AIM has been suspended.
This can happen if you travel and AIM deems the use "Unusual".
Since Apple IDs can no long be checked there it has become more difficult to obtain a full picture.

  • All OD Users in Buddy List ... ?

    Hi,
I want to use the ichat server to make it possible to have a multiuser chat in my network. My users are connected tru a OD server, i filled in the User information that is uses Jabber (iChat server is a Jabber server to my knollage)
Users are able to connect to the ichat server, but the buddy list stays empty .... Do i have to add all my co-workers bij hand .. ?
I have setup my server as Advanced server.

I was wondering the same thing.
I read in the manual that this feature only works if you are using the Basic Server set up.
    But i might be wrong.
If you use Bonjour it seems to populate the list with everyone.
I would also like to know if it is possible to automatically add everyone to the list.
Maybe this can be acheived by a prefrence roll out?
Hopefuly someone here with more knowlege than me in OS X server will be able to help

  • Duplicate entries in iChat AIM Buddy List

Just got a new Mini, set it up and opened iChat - for some reason all of the Buddy entries in my Buddy List are listed twice.  If I try deleting one of the entres it deletes both; logging directly into AIM has each listing presented only once.  How do/can I fix this and get the list properly displayed?

    Hi,
I use iChat 6 with separated Buddy Lists (See the iChat Menu > Preferences > General section)
This is because I have several Buddy lists that Login to AIM and I did not want some Buddies being Duplicated where I have them in different lists.
Having said that I just linked them and they did not seem to be duplicated.
I have heard of people getting this Doppelganger type thing if they have linked either Facebook or GoogleTalk chat accounts to AIM Buddies in which case they seem to be "reflected" back via Google or Facebook to iChat if you list your Facebook/Google account as well as your AIM one.
It may also pay to check your Address Book if your are seeing people via their "real names' as shown in the Address Book.

  • AIM buddy keeps disappearing from my buddy list

I added an AIM buddy to my buddy list and she accepted. But as soon as I did that, her name on the list disappeared as if she went offline. But she didn't. She was still online and I could chat with her if I went to the manual chat feature.
If I log in using AIM's client, she is in my buddy list. But she isn't on iChat.
    Anyone know why?

    Try E Boyd's fix.
"I've had this problem for weeks until tonight. I tried all the fixes listed and nothing seemed work. Here's what fixed it...I went to ichat>preferences>accounts and deleted my account...I then re-entered all the information as if it was a new account and all my buddies were on the list...including the entry that would disappear after 5 seconds. Let me know if this works."

  • How do i transfer or export buddy list names on iChat or Aim on mac

How do i transfer or export buddy list names on iChat or Aim on mac?

    Hi,
If you have the AIM for Mac then you cand sign in as one Screen Name and use the Export feature to create a file of the Screen Names of that Buddy list.
(you can then sign in under a different name and import the names)
In iChat it helps if all the Buddies have Real Names or Nicknames so that they have entries in the Address Book.
You can then create Groups in the Address Book and move all the Cards into one Group.
All the names in that Group can then be selected and dragged to another AIM valid Buddy list.
I once transferred 292 names this way.
You can also login to multiple Accounts in some version of ichat and just Drag names form one list to another.
You may find with any of these methods that some Buddies appear only as Off line.
This will due to their Security Setting where they are only allowing your Original Screen Name.

  • Buddy list all gray--how can this not work??

I've got iChat 3.1.8 and only opened it when i got a little Logitec USB camera. Plugged everything in, set all the settings, and added my buddy (another Mac user). I could not initiate a video chat because my buddy list names and icons are all gray. There are NO green icons at all. But she said I showed up just fine in her buddy list, and when she initiated the chat it worked perfectly. We had a nice chat. But when we tried again from my end, still no color in my life.
The camera has worked fine since I plugged it in. I bought and installed iChatUSBCam v2.2.1, which allowed me to set a few more settings. Alas, nothing has changed.
I've read this question a few times on the board and--most frustrating--they all seem to say "Oh, it worked itself out." But mine isn't working itself out. Camera and microphone are enabled. No one is blocked. I'm lost.

    Hi M Smith 1,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
In System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall tab is the Firewall On ?
Have you set the iChat ports in a New options if it Is ?
Did those ports include 5190 on UDP ?
If Yes to these three question use the Advanced button.
Does this have the "Block UDP Traffic" item ticked ?
    If so deselect it.
The iChat ports also need to be open in your modem and any separate router.
If Port Forwarding was used here it must point to the IP that your computer is getting or using. ( See System Preferences > Network > (Select connection method) > TCP/IP tab )
On some modems and or routers the forwarding or use of TCP and UDP protocols on port 5190 seems to cause a conflict.
iChat can have the login to AIM and text chatting moved to a different port.
    iCHat > Preferences > Accounts
Select the AIM or @mac account on the left
    Select the Server Settings tab
Whilst Logged out of AIM change the port to 443.
If all these do not work go to Users/(your Account)/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restart ichat

  • Show Jabber "nickname" field as buddy's name in buddy list

    Hi,
I am working on a product that integrates with ichat and adium to allow users to chat with visitors to their website. The Jabber protocol has a 'nickname' field, but ichat only shows the full JID in the buddy list. For example, the user might have a buddy [email protected] with the nickname 'bob' (specified in the Jabber XML returned from the server that defines the user's buddylist). In Adium, the buddy appears as 'bob', however, in iChat the buddy appears as "[email protected]".
Are there any preferences that need to be set in ichat to display the buddy's name in the buddylist as their 'nickname' provided by the server? (I know this can be done via the 'alias' option, but I need these value to be set server side on the jabber server -- as opposed to client side)
If you wish to recreate this issue, you can goto: http://www.hab.la , signup for an account, and try it out on both ichat and adium. You'll see that the nickname is being displayed in the adium buddylist, but not in the ichat buddylist.
    Thanks again,
    Ben Congleton
http://www.hab.la - chat with visitors to your website for free using adium or ichat

Actually, I wanted to follow up a little bit. It appears that the problem is that ichat does not support Vcards? We are setting the JID's nickname using a VCARD, and it doesn't look like iChat update's the nickname shown in the buddylist to match the VCARD nickname.
Is there any way to change the buddy name displayed in the buddylist on ichat on the server side once a user has connected to the jabber server?
i.e. imagine the name displayed in the buddy list is currently "bob", we would like to change the name to "george" on the server side. In adium and other libpurple based protocols you can do this by updating the user's VCARD on the jabber server.
Is there a field in jabber that ichat recognizes where the server can set the nickname for a particular buddy without forcing the client to reconnect. (i.e. right now the only place I can tell that a server can change the display name for a buddy in iChat is on the initial roster download .. so when the client first connects.. but never without the client having to disconnect and reconnect)
I hope all of this make sense.
    Thanks,
    Ben
