Possible to Trim In/Out points of Original Clips?

Hi all,
I think the answer is probably no, but is there any way when trimming clips on the timeline (or in the source monitor) to have your in/out trim edits modify and actually edit the original file? I am thinking here specifically about .M2T files.
I'm asking referring to CS3, but if there is any difference in this capability between the versions, that would be useful info to me alsol.
Yes, I know there are issues about trimming MPEG2 files, keeping GOP structure, etc - I think that any trim should be such that the In point of the trimmed clip should be an I frame, and keep the same GOP structure as the original M2T file.
And yes, before anyone answers this, I am aware that you can convert M2Ts to a lossless intermediary AVI for editing (and in that process trim the clip, for example using TMPGEnc 4.0 Express) or use Cineform. I'm looking to see if there's any way to trim M2Ts (the actual source file) via CS3.
Thanks,
Patrick

You're talking about what's called 'destructive editing'. None of the major NLEs will do this. You may be able to find a freeware program somewhere, maybe VirtualDub or something like it, that can do the job.
VideoHelp.com is a good resource for this kind of thing.

  • New problem/bug when I set in and out points on a clip. Unwanted automatic zoom in on clip timeline.

Playing clips to log and set in and out points for scenes I will use later.  Something changed with the new update and I think it is a bug.  When I hit the I and O keys to set in and out points on a clip before dragging to the sequence, it zooms in on the clip timeline.  I cannot see the full clip time line unless I zoom out which is a pain to do time and time again.  How do I get it back to the way it was before?  It did not used to zoom in and out, it just marked your in and out point as it played leaving the clip timeline unchanged.
I am using windows 7 with Premiere Pro CC

    Hi,
Thanks for your post. I think you are using Premiere pro CS6 as the Project option is included in the file menu and in the video there is an option of project available and visible. Please update your CS6 with the latest 6.0.5 update and the issue will be fixed. The link is provided below. Please update once issue is fixed.

  • Is it possible to set IN/OUT points for video effects within a single clip in PE4?

    Hello,
In PE4, Is it possible to use keyframes to simply turn certain video effects on/off at different points within a single clip ?
Some effects (i.e. Invert)have a Blend With Original setting which makes this easy to achieve, but others (i.e. Ripple)do not.
I understand how to use keyframes to adjust effect properties at different points within a clip, I just can't find a way to simply 'turn-off' or bypass an effect for a period of time.
    Thanks All, CB

    Chris,
As Steve points out, most Effects are OFF, by default (usually setting their parameters to 0). I just add a Keyframe for that Effect, with those properties, where you want the Effect to be OFF (but check that each Effect that you use starts as OFF, just to be sure). Then, in between the OFF settings, I add Keyframes with the desired parameters to invoke that particular Effect.
One can also use the Razor/Sissors to cut the Clip into segments (just do not move them) to keep the Keyframes in one area of the original Clip. I usually work on the entire Clip, as once the Keyframe is set to OFF for that Effect, no more Keyframes are needed.
Some Effects also have a Bypass setting, that can be Keyframed (in P Pro, and assume in PE). This can be handy to fully turn OFF any Effect. Note: even in P Pro, not all Effects have a Bypass setting.
As usual with PE (and P-Pro and PS), there can be a couple of ways to accomplish the same thing. One can choose the method that suits them best.
    Good luck,

  • Cannot undo the trim selection and return to original clip

I have a clip 6 seconds long and dragged it into the project. I shortened it to 2 seconds some how. I tried to undo the trim selection. I even deleted the clip from the project and the event. I imported it again. Once I dragged it into the project again, the orange bar appeared and the clip shortened to 2 seconds. I want the full 6 secs. I double clicked and got into the trim clip screen and it will not let me use the handles to expand to the original clip. It can get shorter, not longer. Does this make sense.

There should be little arrows at the bottom right and bottom left of the clip. You can click on an arrow and a handle will pop out allowing you to add frames back to the clip.
You can also drag the whole six seconds back from the Event if that is quicker.

  • Setting an out point on a clip

When setting an in point on a clip and you hit "+" it appears as if you can advance the cursor to a specific time when you type in a value, but I can't seem to make it work. Does anyone know how?

hmmm, in the event bowser it does not work for me either, hitting the minus key moves the out point back, but hitting the plus key appears not to move either the CTI or either the in or out points.
A work around that uses the same idea and number of keystrokes.
Set an in point and then using the ctrl d function set the duration this allows you to create a clip of an exact duration.

  • Is there any way to lock your in and out points on a clip?

Everytime I click outside the clip, my in and out points disappear and I have to reset them.  Any ideas?

No way of locking them in, but once you have your in and outs set, if you hit F it will favorite that area. Then whenever you want to go back to that clip just click the favorite icon on the clip and your in and outs will be set around the favorite section.

  • Multiple in/out points

Here is what I wish to do with imovie.
Please tell me if this is possible.
I have shot some photos with my camera.
I want to import the video into a bin and edit from that one source.
Can I set multiple in and out points from one long video source?
Will this cause havoc with the trash?

There is nothing called a "bin" in iMovie — no place where multiple iMovie projects can share access to the same video file.
Rather, each iMovie project has its own collection of video files. The files are stored in the Media folder inside the project. (Video files are automatically stored there as they are imported from the camera.)
Multiple clips in a project can point to the same video file. So Yes, a video file can support any number of clips in that project.
A convenient way to do that is to place the original clip on the Clips pane, then Option-drag it to the Timeline as copies are needed. Option-dragging creates a copy of a clip (but not its Media file.) Then you can use Direct Trimming — grab either end of the clip to shorten it — to set the in and out points of that clip. There are lots of other ways to shorten a clip too.
Emptying the iMovie trash will not disturb the shared clips, for a Media file is never modified (shortened) when you empty the iMovie Trash. iMovie employs non-destructive editing, which allows the user to always restore a clip to the original length of its Media file. The Media file never changes.
Note that Copying and Pasting a clip from Project A to Project B creates a copy of the clip's entire Media file in Project B.

  • When exporting a small area using in-out points, why does Premiere render audio for ENTIRE sequence?

I'm trying to export a small section of my timeline using in and out points... but it looks like Premiere wants to render the audio for the entire sequence and not just my in-out points.
I added a bunch of audio effects to the entire sequence so it's taking 10 minutes to render this audio. When I click on the cancel button, Premiere just freezes and I have to force shut it down.
Is it possible for premiere to only render the audio in the in-out points I originally asked for to cut down on export times?
    -Pete

Similar problem here but on a Mac.   AME is always much slower than directly exporting from Premiere, but if I start to get slow renders a reboot always sorts the issue out.

  • Color is changing the clips in and out points

I tried to import into color a fcp7 sequence.  The original footage are quicktime clips.
When the project opens in color, the in and out points of the clips are not there and it gives me the beginning of the clip.
With other footage that I ingested in FCP I don't have a problem.
Can someone explain this to me.
    Thanks

    >The original footage are quicktime clips.
What FORMAT of Quicktime?  Because QT is just a container that can be one of a dozen codecs.  Color ony works with certain codecs, like ProRes, HDV, XDCAM, DVCPRO HD.  If the codec is anything but those...it will have serious problems.

  • Help with in and out points not synced to footage correct

When trying to insert a clip from the source material into the sequence timeline, using insert/overwrite function , dragging in the clip etc. any of the methods to bring the clip in from a given In and out point. Certain clips are failing and coming in as different in and out points. So the footage or clip/sublip in the source material comes in with the same lenght but the program is selecting a random different portion of the scene to put into the sequence. Please help. We are on deadline for a project :(. If anyone knows whats going on please help.

It sounds like you're running into a known issue with subclips from merged clips, which the engineering team is working on.
Unfortunately, there's no way to fix the subclips. Rather than making subclips, you could try one of the following:
Duplicate the merged clip in the Project panel and set the desired In/Out range for each instance. For all intents and purposes, this is the same as creating a subclip--at least a "soft" subclip, which is what you get when you deselect the option to Restrict Trims to Subclip Boundaries. Admittedly the workflow is not quite as efficient, but the results are the same.
If it's not essential to save subclips to the project, then simply load the merged clip in the Source Monitor, use In/Out points to define a segment, and insert the segment into your sequence, then repeat for the next segment of interest.

  • When Batch Capturing, Final Cut doesnt notice Media Out points

I have logged about 20 clips with all of the in and out points set and correct. I have put them in a logging bin and choose batch capture and it begins the process just like usual. However now it wont stop when it comes to the out point of each clip the camera will just keep running until i cancel the batch capture. What could be wrong? any help would be great. thanks

You need more than one hard drive. Capturing to your system disk is not a good idea and will bite you.
The in/out ignoring issue could be a problematic QT install or a problem with the firewire protocol.
    1. Make sure you are using the correct Firewire (Basic or std) for your camera/VTR first.
    2. Make sure there is no interference between external hard drives on the firewire bus and your camera
    3. Use the Apple QT7 reinstaller

  • How to remove all in and out points from extendscript code?

    Hi,
I am creating a sequence from a clip from extendscript code to automateToSequence function.
But if there are some in and out points in the clip only the select clip part is converted as a sequence, what is the solution to remove all those in and out points from extendscript code, or to get the full clip to sequence even there are some in and out points.
    I am using the function like this; qe.project.getItemAt(i).automateToSequence(seq,0,0,1,1);
    Please suggest,
    Thanks and Regards,
    Anoop NR

Double click the pre-comp or nested comp, open comp settings from the menu or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmnd + k.
Note, changing the length of the comp will not extent the length of footage or layers inside the comp. You have to do that manually and it depends on your footage type.

  • How to make a short clip out of the original one ?

Some days ago, I asked a question on editing a clip in this forum. The responder asked me to provide a few seconds of the clip for his examination. But I got stuck. I didn't know how to make a clip of a few seconds out of the original clip and that it had the exact same format and properties as the original clip.
Neither Premier nor After Effect have an ouput option such as "same as original source" .
So, my question is how to make a short clip out of the original one with everything the same properties as the original one.
    Thanks in advance.

May be I haven't made myself clear
Sorry, but I think that I am still not following you.
I want to export and render the short clip to a new file which I want to have everything the same as the original clip. Just like I cut off a few seconds off it and that few seconds becomes an independent file.
OK, you have your original source file. It is complete and is also unaltered. If you want a "Copy" of it, just use Windows Explorer, or similar to make that Copy. If you want a separate file of your edited version of that source file (as it appears in the Timeline), use the WAB (Work Area Bar) to include just that edited instance of the source footage, and Export just the WAB. This will give you a separate file with the edits in it.
I still feel that neither is what you want. If you can step me through, maybe with screen-caps, what you have and what you wish to end up with, I can see the operation more clearly.
    Good luck,

  • Copy In to Out points in timeline?

If i'm in the timeline and have in and out points set over a portion of a clip how can i copy the portion between the in to out points to paste else where like you can in fcp?
    Thanks

Curious (and also wondering if CS3 is different from CS4):
I was very confused until I realized that Patrick must be referring to Sequence in/out points.
Patrick, why are you using Sequence in/out points? I'm not suggesting you shouldn't, just curious. Help files address these as relevant to 3 and 4 point edits, or doing lift/extract operations. I couldn't understand why you weren't simply copying and pasting the clip, since a clip with in/out points will paste just as is (i.e. Jim's method).
    > Set your in/out points on the clip in the timeline
Jeff, can you put clip in/out point while it is in the timeline (other than dragging the end)? And if you drag the clip, then all you need to do is copy/paste.
Harm, there's no short cut to setting the in and out points your way, is there?
    Another option:
Select the clip in the timeline
    Go to Sequence in marker.
    Add a clip marker
    Go to Sequence out marker.
    Add a clip marker
Double click clip (opens in Source Monitor)
go to markers and set in/out points on clip
Move CTI to new clip location
    Add clip to timeline

  • In to out point duration

Is there any easy way to see the duration from in to out points in the clips and timeline? I can see the clip durations if I open the info window, which is a pain, but I can't find any way to see the timeline in to out durations. It is automatic in Final Cut Pro. Surely, Premiere Pro has a way.

The above suggestions works (easiest way was holding Shift-Option (Mac) Shioft-Alt (PC) while opening Premiere), however, when I went back to adjust my Preferences, Appearence: Brightness, I discovered that the In/Out Duration is dependent on the brightness setting.
So, adjust the brightness to what you prefer, then slide the same slider a little more or less so that the In/Out Duration text gets brighter or darker.
In other words, it's not a preference reset issue or corrupted preferences, but just an adjustment issue (I guess one could argue it is a bug in the luminance of text vs. panel brightness).
Anyway, to save you re-entering your preferences, just adjust your Appearence Brightness instead.
    Hope that helps everyone.
    cheers
    Jonno
