Possible to upgrade HD on a MacBook Pro?
I have a 15" laptop of the previous generation that I bought about two years ago. I have run out of storage space on the hard drive. I have done all the file shuffling and deleting and archiving I can. It's no use. I can't find any more room on this thing.
Would it be practical for me to buy a higher-capacity HD and put it in the machine? Do people ever do that? I've build PCs but I've never messed around with laptops.
If it's possible to physically replace the HD, what about getting my old system onto it? I have been using Time Machine. With a new HD, is there a way I could "restore" my previous system onto it?
Just doing preliminary research here and sizing up my options.
Any help or info would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Ethan
ebdb:
You need a 2.5" SATA HDD. I don't know what generic drives Amazon offers, but one of the best shopping places for Macusers is OWC. Here is a list of available HDDs at OWC. In addition to the step by step directions linked by neuroanatomist here are few tips you may find helpful:
• Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
• Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx screw driver is critical. For a spudge I use the handle of an old toothbrush (choose one made of hard plastic), cut off the brush and bevelled the handle end like a flat blade screw driver).
• Picking up on one user’s suggestion, I clicked on the pages of each step which involved removing screws to enlarge, then printed out the pages. I poked holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poked the screws in the holes and stacked the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling was a lot easier. No cups to tip over and spill. No guessing. Each screw was exactly in the right place. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. I previously used small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nested them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
• Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
• Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
• Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
Once the HDD is installed you will need to format and erase it before you can install or clone to it. Please post back if you need step by step directions.

This is correct...
MacBook Pro with Retina display comes standard with 4GB of 1600MHz memory. Please note that the memory is built into the computer, so if you think you may need more memory in the future, it is important to upgrade at the time of purchase.

Is possible to transfer photos from a macbook pro to an iphone 5 without itunes or an internet connection? I'm a pro photographer and I need to transfer photos from my camera, edit them, copy photos to my iphone and send via 4G network to an editor. I will be in a location without internet access and my old computer itunes wont sync with my new iphone 5. I can't upgrade the computer right now because I need some of the old software. Thanks.
Some decent suggestions for apps to do this in this thread:

Since upgrading to yosemite my MacBook Pro want detect my external display
Since upgrading to yosemite my macbook pro won't detect my external display ?
Here's an Apple Discussions thread that might help. It suggests using Disk Utility to repair permissions to fix the following issue, which I just found on my system:
User differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; user is 244.
Group differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; group is 244.
If Repair Permissions doesn't do the trick (because it doesn't stick across sleep and restarts), helpful user "lplacencia" has provided some Terminal commands to patch up the files as needed. With any luck a 10.10.1 update will address this soon!
I haven't had a chance to test this fix yet, but I will do so later tonight. Meanwhile I can report that booting up in Safe Mode didn't make any difference for me. My system includes MacPorts (which includes some running services) so I might need to eliminate that factor, if Disk Utility doesn't help.
A total clean install would have to be my next step. (And I might try that anyway just to see if it's a problem in Yosemite generally.) It's not possible to download the Yosemite full installer from Apple through a public website, but you can save the installer and use it to re-install without having to download it again. -
Since I upgraded to Maverick, my Macbook Pro shuts down quite often without warning. No idea why.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo). -

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015
Any further assistance will be appreciated -

Sounds like Notifications app.
Maybe some other app. In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems tab: remove all entries with the minus sign underneath. This will not uninstall anything, you have to start those apps by hand now. Restart.
Still there?
Yes: Restart again while holding the shift key, this will start the mac in SafeMode: only the necessary items are loaded to run.
Still there?
Yes: Make an etrecheck list and post it here.
No: Restart, put the items in the LoginItems back, one by one, restart after each entry, and you will find the "culprit"
Please report accordingly. I will be back in 24 hours. -

Hightlight Login Option. This will bring up the window showing Automatic login.

Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
And the download an APP called caffiene...
When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep
