Possible to use Time Capsule as back up for one computer and not another?

Here is what I want to do. I want to use this as a router wireless router for wi-fi. I have a mac so I want my data to be backed up automatically. now my brother also has a laptop and want him to use the wifi, but i dont want him to access any of my backed up files. is this possible? what are the steps? he has a pc thanks.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the warm welcome.
Yes, I did some research on the echolife and I don't think it has WDS functionality available. I do have another 3Com router that I'm thinking of firing up again. I know it has WDS functionality. The question is, would the Time Capsule be compatible with it in order to extend the network? I am not keen to shell out for another Apple base station if at all possible.
Regards,
/Brian

  • Using Time Capsule to back up Mac Book Pro and external drive

we're changing our main computer in the house to our mac book pro, which is not currently backed up, so i'm thinking of buying a time capsule. our current main machine is an old pc with two external hard drives connected....one used as the main file storage location and the second as a back up location. the main large files on these drivers are photo's, videos and scanned documents. can i use the time capsule to back up the mac book with an external hard drive connected to it? i'm thinking of leaving all the photo's, videos, documents, etc. on the external harddrive but want to be able to back it up to the time capsule as well as backing up the mac book pro. can backing up the external hard drive be set up to activate automatically daily as I think the mac book can? thanks

This is not as simple as it could be..
Firstly the Mac can read the external drives via the PC if they are shared to the network.. it cannot read them directly plugged into the Mac or the TC.
Also the TC is not really designed to store files.. it is a location for backups by TM..
Read some of the stuff Pondini.. our local Time Machine expert.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Q3 here is relevant. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
The hard drives would have to be plugged directly into the Mac to be backed up and they would have to be reformatted to Mac format. So you would need to offload the files.. format and then load the files back.. no trivial task.

  • Using time capsule to restore data to new computer and doing the back-up for the new computer

    Hello
My iMac has broken down. Data were saved by Time Machine on a Time Capsule. So the new computer was set-up with things from the Time Capsule. Worked fine. The Time Machine informed me that the backups will no longer be available for the old iMac. That's fine. After everything was set-up on the new one (15" Mac Book pro retina) I wanted to make sure that the backup process for this one was ready to go and as it was done in the past. I have selected the Time Capsule (it's a 500GB that is backing two computers) and as such there is limited space available on it but that's ok since the process is creating space when needed by deleting old backups from 2011 which I don't need any more keeping 1 year history being ok.
The problem I am now facing is that it seems Time Machine consider that the back-up of the New Mac book pro as a new volume - i.e. on top of the one used to set-up the new Mac book (the old iMAc!) and the one for the other computer. Time machine seems to be looking to open a third volume and obviuosly doesn't have the space to perform the back-up.
How can I sort this? Ideally for me after I have restored the data from the old iMac to the Mac Book pro I would like to keep updating the back-ups (originally from the old iMac) with the changes that happened on the Mac Book pro.
I hope I am clear and looking for some tips on that.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Best
    Pierre

You can't do that. This is because the backups are tied to the network adapter's MAC address of the computer you are backing up with. You could "fake" the MAC address but this would make it impossible for you to use the iMac on a network (as it's MAC address would already be being used). Your only option is to delete the old iMac's backups or buy a new TC (best option if you want to keep the backups).

  • HT1178 How can I use Time Capsule to move music from one computer to another?

I want to move all the music I have on my old laptop (macbook) to my new macbook pro. How can I do this? Easy, simple, steps would be greatly appreciated!

Are you moving the itunes library?? That is entirely different to moving just music.
Apple have specific instructions for moving libraries..
And there is no need to use the TC.. other than as a switch and router.. share the folder in one Mac to copy to.

  • Is it possible to use time machine to back up a hard drive?

Is it possible to use time machine to back up a 1 hard drive onto another, then periodically update the backups just like I usually do with the Mac HD onto an external?
    Thanks!

I don't know what you usually do but Time machine is a backup software. it does back up one (or more) hard drives to another. it's not a mirror utility though. it makes and keeps regular incremental backups and you can restore from any time point in the past you have a backup for. i suggest you consult pondini's FAQs at the top of TM forum

  • Is it possible to use time capsule or airport extreme as a wireless hard drive for iphone?

Is it possible to use time capsule or airport extreme as a wireless hard drive for iphone.
I would like to strem movies from the hard drive to iphone.
I have already seen the Goflex Stellite, which works this way.
Is there any other device that could do this?

I did a typo. My current computer is a 2010 1/2 iMac.  The stand alone monitors are still out of my price range so I'm looking for other options. By buying an external hard drive and a broken iMac, I'm still ahead. Still, if I understand you right, the 27" 2010 and earlier iMacs  would be possiblities.
Are there adapters that would allow me to run a 2011 and newer iMac as an external monitor from my 2010 1/2. There are so many adapters out there these days.

  • I was just wondering if I can use time capsule with my iphone for both back up and to access the hard drive on the capsule?

I was just wondering if I can use time capsule with my iphone for both back up and to access the hard drive on the capsule?

I don't think backup is supported but you may be able to access the TC's internal drive, from the iPhone, with an application like: NetPortal
Note: I haven't actually tried this app, so if someone else has and was successful in accessing the TC's drive they can certainly chime in.
Follow-up. Just downloaded and installed this app ... and I can now verify that it, indeed, can access both my TC's internal and externally attached USB HDD.

  • HT201250 I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was?

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • HT3728 Is it possible to use Time Capsule as external hard drive instead of back-up?

    I wonder if it's possible.

Possible, but if you place the only copy of the data that you have on the Time Capsule, you then have to figure out how to back up that data to another drive.
Things may be simpler...with faster performance....if you add a USB or FireWire to your Mac, and then use the Time Machine to back up both the Mac and the hard drive to the Time Capsule.

  • How can I use my time capsule with Ethernet cable? How is it also possible to use time capsule as a normal external hard drive?

My problem is that I don't know how to use my Time Capsule with Ethernet Cable, as when I use wireless it is really slow.

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

  • Using Time Capsule to back up external hard drive

I just purchased a Time Capsule with hopes to backup an external hard drive. I thought I could have it plugged into the Time Capsule USB port and run TIme Machine from my computer. Then, I was told that I couldn't do that but would have to plug Hard drive to my laptop and backup to Time Capsule that way. Now I was told that backing up should work (but not supported) but if I ever have to restore, could be problematic.
What is the scoop on this? Can I back up this way successfully? I am looking for recommendations for backing up this external hard drive which we use a shared drive.

you cannot use time machine to back up an airdisk (a drive connected to a times capsule or airport extreme. what will work is to back up to a drive connected to a TC

  • Can we use time capsule to back-up IPAD air ?

I Just bought a time capsule 3 TB with the intention of doing backup of my 2 IPAD air and also to back up an existing Asus Laptop whcih runs on windows 7 ? How do we run either time machine or  else to accomplish this.

You cannot directly backup an iPad to TimeCapsule. You can backup the iPads to iTunes on your Computer, and then use backup software to backup your computer to the Time Capsule whihc would include your iTunes library and as such the iPad backups .
There is no TimeMachine for Windows. But any number of Windows backup packages can backup to TimeCapsule / Network Drives

  • I used an external hard drive for my backups via Time Capsule.  I bought a new computer and I want to transfer all my old fonts over to the new one but when I go into the Font Library from the hard drive backup but my downloaded fonts aren't there?

I used an external hard drive to back up my computer using Time Capsule before I bought a new one.  I am slowly transferring information fromt he backup to my new computer and I want to transfer over my old font book.  When I go into the Font folder on the hard drive the only fonts that show up are the ones that came stock with the computer not any of the ones I have downloaded over time.  Could they be downloaded somewhere else?

The answer to that would probably be "Yes." If you don't remember where your fonts were stored, you may want to search your backups for any of the font files you know the names to. See where that takes you.
Ideally, Font Book and other font managers will temporarily store the fonts you "installed" into the System when you run the OS. When you shut down, etc. they are removed and reloaded on restart. The permanent place fonts reside is where you saved them when or after you downloaded them. I typically create a Resources folder on the root level of the computer and place a Fonts folder there. Then I install fonts from there, and they are available to all users on that iMac.
Perhaps if you did not have that kind of a strategy, perhaps many of them are still in your Downloads folder?

  • Time Capsule visible to one computer but not another

I want to use Time Capsule for Time Machine backups of my MacBook Pro, running 10.5.2, and manual backups from my PowerBook, running 10.4.11. Everything is hunky dory for the MBP, but the PB cannot see the Time Capsule - meaning, the Time Capsule is not visible from the finder. I've tried looking for it using Go to Network, Disk Utility, and every other way I could think of. Both computers are on the same wireless network and can see each other. File Sharing is enabled on the Time Capsule. What am I missing?

I used the Airport Utility to enable file sharing for each of my 3 Macs before connecting them. I don't know if this is necessary but I didn't have any problem
Go to Airport Utility - Disks - File Sharing (click file sharing and enter credentials for each computer l, select read and write access)

  • Using time capsule to back up PC

I have an older timecapsule 1g wifi N and and am thinking of using it to extend my network (Use my newer gen 2gb) time capule hooked up to my modem and to back up  my macs. I would also like the older time capsule to beck up  my WIndows 7 pc through wifi. Is this possible and hat steps/software would I need.
    Thanks

You still want the old TC tied into the network.. so it should be in bridge and plugged into the network somewhere.. if you don't do this then you need to figure out how you will have dual networks.
How is the win7 computer connecting to the network now?
What version of win7? You can use MS backup if it is pro or ultimate.. otherwise you have to buy a backup software.. there are 1 zillion available.. 99% can backup to network drives.. only MS would be so stupid as to differentiate products by making home version unable to use network.
Genie Time Line Pro is a Time Machine like backup for PC.
Macrium Reflect is a good cheapie.. free to do full disk backups.
Check out the zillion others. I cannot live so long.
