Possible virus affecting network connections, etc?

My iBook (running 10.3.9) just started doing some bizarre things. The network connection has slowed down considerably, and 2 of the 4 e-mail accounts that I have set up in mail no longer connect (and I know it's not those accounts that are acting up, though it's always the same accounts on the same server). I've experienced this problem using wireless and ethernet on one router and ethernet on another, both of them using entirely different ISPs. Other computers hooked up to those routers connect fine.
Also - and this part is a little more bizarre - some websites refuse to come up. So I can go to google, but I can't go to versiontracker or the apple store (just as an example - there are far more sites that I can't go to). Sometimes when I close the browser and reopen it I am able go to a particular site that I couldn't before, but always about half of the sites that I try to go to won't come up. When I try to update my software (for example, the auto-update for Office) it tells me that it can't make the network connection.
I then decided to try to look at what programs were running, and the forcequit menu shows nothing unusual. I tried to open activity monitor to see what was running in the background, but it was unresponsive (I'd click and it wouldn't open). I then decided to try using diskutility, but it did the same thing as activity monitor (wouldn't open up). Other utility applications seem to open fine, however I opened net info, and when I looked at the usage of my ethernet connection it reported no traffic even when I was successfully loading a webpage (I've never used net info before, I so I don't know if that's what it's supposed to show).
I was unable to download Norton through my university the first time because it couldn't make the connection. I rebooted and it was able to download it, but when I installed it and tried to open Norton is said that file was missing or damaged and couldn't be opened. I deleted it and reinstalled (from the same installer) and it didn't work again. I then deleted the download, downloaded it again, and it opens fine. I was able to get the new virus definitions, but it took what I perceive as longer than normal to download them. I then started scanning my harddrive, and it crashed when it was about 10% done with the scan (that is, the screen froze and the gray lettering superimposed on top of the screen said I needed to restart my computer). I restarted my computer and ran it again - same result. I then started going from folder to folder and was able to get the documents folder but it crashed midway through the applications folder. I then went through application by application in the applications folder, and the only thing that it crashed while scanning was the keynote application. I rebooted, scanned keynote again, and again it crashed. I then trashed keynote from within Norton, but when I went to empty the trash it said I didn't have permission to trash certain files (which didn't show up in the trash bin, but I think were part of the keynote package contents). I had read-write permission for keynote, so I was a little confused by that. Anyway, I rebooted and started my folder by folder scanning again. I was able to scan the library folder, but it crashed in the System folder.
Soooo... that's when I decided to seek help, because I really don't want to have to go through folder by folder to figure out what programs are infected or causing the problems (and I don't really know if the fact that they crash Norton means that they're infected and I should delete them, or if it means something different entirely). Any suggestions?

Please let me suggest that you re-think Norton. I've read many, many posts in various forums here to the effect that Norton causes far more problems than it fixes (and some that say it fixes nothing at all while wreaking all sorts of havoc).
Search for Norton and you'll see what I mean.
I do see a number of posts saying ClamXav (I won't swear to the spelling) is quite good as a replacement . . . if you want one.
Glad your problem is fixed -- hope Norton doesn't make another!

Have you tried re-booting your WiFi router ?  It may seem OK on your PC, but a re-boot may help.

  • Does using more than one apple tv affect network connection

    My AppleTV has upgraded.
Since then the network connection has been very fragile
I have restarted the apple tv, the tv, and all the devices.
I have also restarted the modem.
    Nothing is working.
I have two apple tvs; so i am now wondering whether having both of them working might affect the network connection.
Or is there any other reason for such a fragile connection?  and what can be done to get a more stable connection?

Yes. I've been doing this. We have a family HP laptop with 750 GB of storage that is our library. One TV in the Den and one in the Family Room. Both have AppleTV's. I've had no problem simultaneously streaming to each AppleTV from the library computer. They both are synced to that PC as well ... mainly for photos. I originally was using my existing wireless-g network and this worked well. I recently put in a couple of Airport extreme units and they work great in wireless-n but I'm not sure it was really necessary ... I just wanted the AppleTVs to be able to stream and sync at their max possible speeds to minimize the possibility of slowing down of our network. The Airport Extreme's may have been overkill but they work really well ... easy to setup and we've now got a very strong wireless signal all over the house. Are you considering multiple AppleTV's?
A nice benefit of multiple AppleTVS is that you always have a backup remote control in case the kids (or maybe I)get absent minded.

  • Possible virus affecting mail?! help!

Hello. Today I started having some very concerning problems with my mail that do not occur when I send emails online via mobileme. In my mail account, when I forward something to one friend of mine, and when she responds, what shows up in my mail are emails that I received from other people in 2007 that were deleted ages ago. It looks as if my friend is responding to my prior forward, but the email that actually shows up in mail is an old one from someone else. It's happened three times now. Online, however, what shows up are the emails that my friend actually sends.
Does anyone else have this problem or has anyone else heard of any virus issues that could be causing problems like this?

It's unlikely to be a virus; to date there have been no confirmed reports of any virus that can infect Mac OS X.
My guess is that it's a corruption either in the mailboxes in Mail on your Mac or in your MobileMe account. I can't offer specific advice but perhaps someone else here will be able to offer a solution. It's also dimly possible that the problem is on your friend's end if this happens only with this one friend and not something amiss with your system or account, though since you say it doesn't happen if you forward emails via the MobileMe web interface (you are forwarding the same sorts of emails to the same friend, yes?).
EDIT: Templeton and VK offered a useful suggestion.
    Regards.

I have been experiencing this as well for about a month and just about five minutes ago I resolved it! I have done everything! You need to unistall iTunes and Quicktime. Don't think you will loose your music as it is on you PC. Trust me. _Follow the links_ on unistalling everything, download it again with the following link and all you music automatically uploads again. It was amazing!

  • Type of the network connection

    Hi All!!
Am working with some networking stuff like - "Bandwidth Meter(A panel which holds a table giving the information regarding the bandwidth, type of the network connected etc in the columns) ", where I need to display the type of the network to which my system is connected..in one of the columns provided...
Is there any facility provided in Java to know the type of the network to which our system is coneected?
The type of the network here is - LAN, WAN, MAN etc....
    Thanks in Advance,
    Regards,

You can use class java.net.NetworkInterface to retrieve all network interfaces of your machine and, for each network interface, you can invoke method getInetAddresses() to get InetAddress objects attached with each interface. The class InetAddress provides methods like isMulticastAddress(). However, retrieve information like bandwith or mac address are possible only if you use JNI . http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?thread=421257&forum=31&message=1872338

  • Error message "network connection reset" only affects one user

I'm running 10.3.9 on a 400Mhz iMac. I have 3 users, myself and my 2 kids. When I try to access a web page using Safari on one of the kid's user accounts I get an error message saying that the server cannot be contacted because the "network connection has been reset", and says to try again later but never works. The odd part is that the other two user accounts can access web pages with no problem.
I have checked my network settings, all user settings/limitations, restarted the computer and modem, tossed all cache and bookmarks for the affected user and placed the com.safari.plist from the user/library/safari folder on the desktop. Still get the same error message.
I would create a new user name but had a hassle with file permissions when I put the old user files in the new user folder.

I see you have Windows Firewall turned on. Do you happen to have any other firewalls or anti-virus in conjunction with this? Sometimes having both turned on will cause issue. Try disabling all of your anti-virus and firewall software and trying again.

Does the iOS devices see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Since both iPhone and iPod stopped connecting I suspect a problem with your network.

Same problem. I can see the itunes store so not a problem with windows firewall. The account is active on my iphone so i know i am not locked out. I can connect the PC to my iphone so i know itunes is working ok. It is just logging into itunes on this pc which doesn't work. Only thing I can think of is that the email address I use for my apple id has been offline for a while and is working again now, I'm wondering whether this has been the case for others who are having this issue?

  • Filling iShuffle over a network connection - possible?

Hi, my wife and I have a Mac and a PC. My Music files are on my Mac and her music files are on her PC. She likes to listen to my music via a shared connection to my Mac (we set up sharing in iTunes on her pc in order to do this). What we are wondering is can she load up her iShuffle with shared songs from my music library on my Mac over the network via her PC? In other words, she not only wants to be able to plug her iShuffle into her PC and fill it up with songs from her own library (located on her PC) but also with songs from my library (located on my Mac) over a network connection. We don't want to have to transfer all of my Mac song files to her PC - that would seem like a waste of space and a bit redundant. So, is it possible to fill and iShuffle over a network connection?

    /Neuwerld
that little "&" sends the conky process to the background freeing up the current process (your autostart.sh script) to finish doing what it's doing so you can move on to running openbox itself.  with this in mind, it should be obvious why keeping conky in the foreground would cause problems.
also, replacing it with (sleep 1 && conky) & means... wait a second, when that's done successfully (&&) run conky, and put all of that () to the background.  that way openbox comes up immediatly and only a second later you've got your panel and monitor.
all this after .xinitrc and before openbox
