Possible virus in itouch?

Hi. I was just wondering if it was possible to get a virus on an itouch. I have looked at a bunch of different forums that give conflicting answers so I figured why not try the apple forums? Anyway, the reason I'm asking is because I had a laptop a few months ago that ended up crashing because of a virus. I use my 1st gen itouch all the time and had connected it to my old laptop numerous times as well. I am very worried that I might have something in my itouch and I do not want to spread anything onto my new netbook. I have a paid subscription to a so-far-so-good anti-virus system, but I wanted to hear some other advice first before trying to scan my itouch, if possible. Any thoughts? Please respond when you can (if you can) and thanks for reading.

Windows viruses cannot spread to the iPod touch, and as the iPod touch does not run Windows they would be completely benign anyway.
The iPod touch runs all applications in a "sandbox" meaning the apps have no access to other apps data or the operating system, so they couldn't spread within the iPod OS.
The iPod touch runs a cut-down, modified version of the Mac OS X operating system for which, after almost 10 years of release, there are still no viruses in the wild.
You can't scan your iPod touch with an anti-virus software because the iPod touch does not appear in Windows as a drive, which also stops files getting on to it.
So, currently there is no threat of viruses on the iPod touch.

    Hey thanks for replying.
    Here's what I did:
First I tried the Winsock reset in the Command prompt. Nothing changed.
Next, I tried the instructions on http://http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4123. The only other program that came up on the 'Winsock Providers' tab on the program was 2 Windows Live applications, which I can do without. So I deleted all Windows Live Applications.
I did the Winsock reset in the Command Prompt again and rebooted my comp.
Unfortunately, nothing has changed. iTunes keeps freezing at various stages of the sync, then shows the candy cane-striped bar with either the words 'Finishing sync' or 'Cancelling sync', before showing the Apple logo.
Sometimes, iTunes gets to the syncing stage - "Copying # of ####" - where it will trudge through the first, second and third tracks before flashing "Copying 4 of ####" for a split second and I catch "Cancelling sync" briefly before the Apple logo appears.
Again, I've repeated the steps I mentioned in my previous post. Does ANYONE know when the new version of iTunes is set to be released?! This one is driving me INSANE, to say the least!!

  • Does Apple give you a toll free number to call about possible viruses?

Does Apple send toll free numbers to call about possible virus or is it a scam

There are no known viruses for Macs.  There is adware and malware.  For adware, those things that keep poping up in your browser you can use AdwareMedic from thesafemac.com to quickly and easily remove all know adware.
That site also have this Adware Removal Guide if you prefer to do it manually thru the Finder.

It's possible you email contained a virus, but unlikely.  There haven't been any reports of email viruses effecting the mac.
My understanding is the Apple provides security updates for all malware including viruses.
There have been reports of a --
    -- Phoney virus checking program
    -- flash malware.
ppc -- Power PC.   An older computer processor used by Apple.  Last Mac shipped with PPC was in 2006.
I've read about two virus checking programs for the mac. One is clamav.  The rest are either junk or malware.

  • Possible virus? MPX player?

I need help with a possible virus. I was trying to watch a NBA and stream it online. I think it was a mpx player? HELP

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Possible virus affecting mail?! help!

Hello. Today I started having some very concerning problems with my mail that do not occur when I send emails online via mobileme. In my mail account, when I forward something to one friend of mine, and when she responds, what shows up in my mail are emails that I received from other people in 2007 that were deleted ages ago. It looks as if my friend is responding to my prior forward, but the email that actually shows up in mail is an old one from someone else. It's happened three times now. Online, however, what shows up are the emails that my friend actually sends.
Does anyone else have this problem or has anyone else heard of any virus issues that could be causing problems like this?

It's unlikely to be a virus; to date there have been no confirmed reports of any virus that can infect Mac OS X.
My guess is that it's a corruption either in the mailboxes in Mail on your Mac or in your MobileMe account. I can't offer specific advice but perhaps someone else here will be able to offer a solution. It's also dimly possible that the problem is on your friend's end if this happens only with this one friend and not something amiss with your system or account, though since you say it doesn't happen if you forward emails via the MobileMe web interface (you are forwarding the same sorts of emails to the same friend, yes?).
EDIT: Templeton and VK offered a useful suggestion.
    Regards.

  • Advice needed on possible virus related prob - please help!

    Evening everyone,
I previously posted on here about an issue I was having with my external hard drive not mounting. I erased it and got it to mount but now I get an error message saying File could not be transferred as it could not be read or written.
I have recently come to suspect I might be harbouring viruses on my macbook as one turned up on my pendrive and on some email attatchments I've sent and was wondering if you think this could be causing the problem with the hard drive? If not - what might be? I've read that some people think it's a prob with tiger. Also can anyone recommend some virus software? I know a lot of people use clam but does that work with intel macs? Also I don't know much about the technical side of things and it doesn't look too user friendly - do you think it would be worth buying a full package like Norton?
Thanks in advance for all of your help!

    Hi Sherman,
Thanks for your help! The ignore ownership box was already ticked. Tried to repair the disk and it did find errors but the repair did not work - it says that the underlying task report failure on exit. Any more suggestions? Is it not possible that I am harbouring a PC virus - it isn't affecting my mac but could it not be playing havoc with the hard drive? Or is that just broken and I should send it back?
I am currently studying in spain for the year but am from the UK and will be back there this weekend so am hoping to sort the problem out before then, or go visit the genius bar in london while I am home.
    Thanks again!

  • Possible virus sent to PCs via email?

My Yahoo email account was accessed and a spam email was sent to everyone in my address book. I never open the obvious spam emails but maybe one got by me. I read that if there was a virus it will not affect my mac but will be transferred to all PCs and I am the only mac user in a world of PCs owners. How do I find out if there is a virus hidden on my Mac?

    sdodge wrote:
That definitely helps. Ahh the joy of owning a Mac! Could the virus be hidden on my Mac and continue being spread to PCs? If so, how would I find it? The only thing people who opened the email can do is scan their PCs correct?
That's always a possibility. The primary function of Mac antivirus software is to identify and remove PC viruses. Some businesses that only use Apple machines use antivirus software to prevent the possible spread of viruses, worms, etc to their customers from their work product. I don't believe that files can become infected in OSX, but files from PC sources might have viruses embedded in them.

  • I have some serious malware or possible virus!!!

I know some will say viruses aren't possible on a Mac but I have had them on a pc and this is way worse than anything I've ever seen! I've tried erasing my disc in more ways than one, running utility from start up, etc. my macbook has a delay to where my password doesn't show any text in the password login for like fifteen minutes. However I can type the password (nothing shows up in box) and it will appear and login about 10-15 min later. Because of this delay between my mac keyboard and mac itself it will not allow me to run utility from startup. I've tried every way to restore my Mac to no avail! Please help!!!

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

Yes, Windows on VPC is just as susceptible to viruses and other stuff as Windows on a real PC.

  • Help Possible Virus or Unexplainable System Behavior

Okay I have an Apple PowerBook G4 which I got in winter 2003 with Mac OS X Jaguar 10.2.8 originally which I had shortly afterward updated to Panther and 10.3.9 has been working just fine till last couple of weeks when I have begun to notice the following problems:
    1) system was freezing up -- Finder would either crash or freeze and would require force quitting Mac wouldn't respond so I ran Disk Utility and repaired Disk Permissions couldn't find anything wrong so I ran Disk Utility of the OS X CD to repair disk and it found some errors in the disk I tried fixing them unfortunately Disk Utility couldn't do so and is only app I have for disk repair at present.
So I end up backing all my files and reinstalling OS X Panther from scratch and all my applications. Microsoft Office X, Virex 7.2 anti-spyware software with definitions, Mac OS 10.3.9 Cobmined Update, the Apple Security Updates and Microsoft patches for their Mac products to fix vulnerabilities in Mac Office etc and any and all other apps I had.
Problem is even afterward the most bizzare things have been happening. Sometimes when I open my iTunes Music Library -- have some music and videos in there -- videos of course in .m4v iPod format -- the problem is 3 out of 5 times each time I quit and re-open iTunes it says that my iTunes Library file is damaged. How did it get damaged. I trash the damaged file and re-import my music. Is it okay to do this automatically? I mean I still have my files on the hard drive (since OS reinstall I copied everything back) and when I trash damaged file iTunes automatically scans the contents of my hard drive, finds and automatically imports pre-existing tracks into the Library -- I shouldn't have to delete the music files along with the damaged Library file and then re-copy the music when the working Library file is available.
Anyways iTunes occasionally reports the Library is damaged and I have done nothing to cause its damage. Sometimes in Safari -- another problem is also occuring.
You see I have popup blocking enabled in Safari and tabbed browsing on all the time. However, lately sometimes when I quit and re-launch Safari those features are disabled but they used to be on by default -- so I shouldn't have to manually turn them on each time I launch the browser.
Another problem -- maybe its the Apple Secuurity Update 2006-003's fault but since installing it in this period after last clean OS X reinstall (last time was a clean reinstall because of disk error) has caused some problems. Before applying it I was able to login to the AIM network -- i.e. AOL Instant Messaging Service easily and quickly via iChat but now iChat's feature to login to AIM is unavailable its not like its giving me the option to login but rejecting my login attempt -- not like I give it my username and password and it has a problem. iChat won't even let me attempt to login now.
As I recall when I first tried installing Apple Security Update 2006-001 it caused Safari to break I had to reinstall OS X to get it back and not apply the update. The iTunes 6.0.2 update which I heard also caused some problems for Windows users prevented me from running Disk Utility on my Mac for some time. It appears as if these Apple Security Updates occasionally are more trouble than their worth. Apple should take the time to test them in advance before rushing them to market or in this case the Internet for download by their customers/users that way they can make sure they are working updates and they don't cause any problems.
But yeah getting back to the point of this thread I seriously don't know what to do about this issue. I want it resolved permanently. Next time I quit iTunes and re-launch it I should not be told the iTunes Music Library file is damaged. Nor should my bookmarks in Safari be deleted automatically. When these things happen by themself it is usually somewhat of a cause for concern.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW A VIRUS COULD HAVE GOTTEN ON MY MAC: I never open suspicious files -- I only accept attachments from people I know and I do attempt to update my Mac with newer security updates regularly so long as they don't give me grief -- I use Mac OS X's Internet Firewall software accessible via System Preferences in the Sharing Pane and the router in my home also has a firewall in it (that is a physical hardware based firewall) I have iTunes 6.0.5 now and the latest update of QuickTime 7 which enhances security and stability of the product. I even run anti-virus software and have never found viruses on my Mac -- also with the Mac's layer of security -- most programs require authentication on the user's part like a username and password to install software so spyware cannot slip in undetected -- software can only be installed manually not automatically so nothing could have been installed on my Mac without my knowledge.
THAT IS WHY I don't understand what could be causing the problem. What should I do? If any further information is needed please let me know I will be happy to provide it if a solution can be reached to my problem.

Okay for Safari I found the logs of the most recent crash report I could find and am looking at it to see if it offers any solutions for my problem with Safari -- is kind of long but anyways posting it here to see if anyone has any ideas -- I for one don't know what all of this means but hoping someone else might know a little more than me on how to interpret the following:

Application Enhancer is a software plugin by Unsanity.com used in Fruit Menu and other software products by the ciompany for customizing Mac OS X -- which I have often used from time to time. I HAVE RAN DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS and TO REPAIR DISK a few times and it hasn't found any problems recently but still these problems have persisted. I thought it was a issue with the hardware -- there were some errors sometime ago but they were corrected and even after that these problems have lasted a while longer -- no more problems though are being found in hardware by Disk Utility.
I'll try running Apple Hardware Test again soon to see if that helps any.

  • Strange repeating strings in multiple files possible virus?

A few months ago when I ran netstat I noticed about 10 TCP ports that said: Local Address [::]:5000, Foreign Address [::]:0, all were just listening. I ran the netstat with -noa to get the PIDs and resolved the issue, but when I started digging around in
some files I started to notice something weird.
In probably around 100 files there are these repeating strings. A few of them are: @VWATAVH, WATAUH, SUVWH, @UATAUAVAWH, SVWATH, @SUVWATAUAVAWH...
I use a program called Bintext that lets me see all of the strings inside a file. After seeing these strings repeatedly I realized that I have some kind of trojan/virus/keylogger/whatever. I have found these same strings in files going back to 2010 up until
the most recent around a week ago.
I finally did a comparison tonight of the file ntdll.dll and I was shocked at the difference of the two files. I downloaded another copy of ntdll.dll from dll files.com. The original file from my computer is 1.23MB and version 6.1.7601.17725. The other file
which hasn't been changed is 1.65MB and version 6.1.7601.17725, the exact same version as the one I already had.I
I used the program bintext to make text files of the two files, then I used the website diffchecker.com to compare the two files. Check it out: https://www.diffchecker.com/dl8jqoye (I couldn't do a link until my account is verified)
Some of the other files that are suspect are: comct32dll, crypt32dll, exe_94123cfe, iwrapexe, unsexe, Riconman, ntdll, and so many others I ran across before I started keeping track. Most of the files that contain these weird strings also reference a small
    group of other files as well: wbemcomn.dll, ntdll.dll, msvcrt.dll, KERNEL32.DLL, RPCRT4.dll, USER32.DLL, advapi32.dll, and unsecapp.dll.
I have tried MANY malware and virus programs, I had norton installed on all of my machines since I bought them, and nothing can detect anything. So at this point I don't know if I am out of my mind or if there is some kind of crazy ass mega trojan living
    on my laptop.
I also found a file at one point that had code for flashing my eeprom which vanished off my computer the next day. I have no idea where to go from here but to get a new computer.
Yesterday a file called TCPSVCS.EXE started making ports 7, 9, 13, 17 and 19 on both TCP and UDP. It doesn't contain any of the weird strings but it makes reference to ntdll.dll, msvcrt.dll, KERNEL32.DLL, RPCRT4.dll, USER32.DLL, and advapi32.dll.
There are also around 30 local TIME_WAIT connections starting at TCP port 51548 and then going higher which are being created by the system idle process.
So am I out of my mind and all of this is normal or has something infected my computer? I get the feeling someone has been logging in remotely but for the most part nothing bad has happened to the computer so I have no idea.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Possible Virus On Bootcamp, how to remove?

Hi, I think I may have gotten a virus on my windows partition of my macbook pro. I windows XP professional with service pack 3 installed. Last weekend I was booted into windows when it suffered a "fatal error." The computer restarted and windows XP was fine. I did, however, get this email from my university network manager concerning my computer:
The computer in question appears to be infected with
a Trojan or worm that reports home to an IRC server.
Several examples include sdbot, spybot, gaobot, polybot,
and some variants of OptixPro. We notice these because
the computer is trying to connect to a known IRC bot
    controller.
We often are unable to tell exactly which version of
which IRC bot an infected computer has, but the
detection method is rarely wrong. There are hundreds if
not thousands of known variants of each of the above
viruses, with new ones being released daily. Updated
AntiVirus software may or may not detect this threat.
Odds are good that the attacker obtained the
password database for this computer, containing all
of the passwords for all accounts on the computer.
It is IMPERATIVE that all passwords for all accounts
on this computer be changed before this computer
is placed back onto the network.
Computers infected with an IRC bot should have their
hard disk formatted and have the Operating System
reinstalled and patched before coming back onto the
network. All passwords on the rebuild system should
be different than they were on the infected system.
IRC bots not only often come bundled with
other malicious software, but once they connect to
the IRC controller, they often download and install
even more malicious software, without the knowledge
and/or consent of the computer user. Therefore,
even if AntiVirus software detects and removes the
IRC bot, typically more malicious software is left
    behind, still running.
IRC bots are updated frequently. Even up-to-date
AntiVirus software often doesn't detect the latest
IRC bots. Once the AntiVirus companies start
detecting a particular IRC bot, the bot is typically
instructed to update itself to a variant that is
    not detected by AntiVirus.
Because of the above activities, scanning for viruses
with an AntiVirus product is typically not an effective
remedy for an IRC bot infection.
I have symantec antivirus for mac, is there any way I can use it to scan the bootcamp partition? I think I know where the infected file is, but symantec says it's clean. I also have Symantec for Windows.
It would be a HUGE inconvenience to reinstall windows XP because my disc is at home and I will not be home for another 2 and a half months. Can you give me any tips on how to remove this virus without reinstalling windows XP?
    Thanks,
    Sam

If you delete it you are only getting rid of half the problem, and likely will be unable to do this.
Start up in Safe mode.. (If you're having trouble doing this press start and search for MSCONFIG go to boot.ini and start in safe mode).
This will only run basic stuff for windows and should potentially stop the Winlog running.
However as I said winlog will probably re-appear because the trojan will likely just retrieve it back from the internet.
I say the best solution is...
Restart your mac into OS X, download Avast free edition and Spybot S&D or similar, and ZoneAlarm Firewall.
Put them on your bootcamp drive. restart into windows in safe mode. Install those and restart back into safe mode if needed.
Set avast to run a boot time scan (Scans before you load into Windows. Run SpyBot S&D. And set Zonealarm to have atleast some sort of protection running all the time.

  • Possible virus on my iPod 15 GB (with Dock Connector)

Hey everyone ~ I have an iPod 15gb (with dock connector)... yes one of the really old ones when they first came out. I think somehow I have downloaded a virus on it. Do any of you know how I can get rid of it, just short of getting rid of my iPod? When I connect it to my laptop through the Firewire card it crashes my computer. The firewire card is fine as it normally stays in the wireless card port all of the time. Recently I have gotten some new music and have downloaded and it copied it onto my iTunes, but when I go to add it to my iPod it crashes.
    Any help is greatly appreicated.
    concerned user~
    Amber

I highly doubt it has a virus, as viruses must be written for a specific device and to my knowledge there are no viruses written for iPods. On top of that, you would have had to install the virus, furthering proof that this is highly unlikely.
Maybe its logic board became corrupt, so it isn't connecting to iTunes properly, and freezes it.
