Possible work-around for AirTunes/802.11n co-existance

I wanted to share this because it may be useful for anyone wanting to run 802.11n and still maintain 802.11 b/g capability and use AirTunes. After purchasing an Apple AirPort Extreme (AAE) I went looking for an 802.11n AirTunes component. Apple don't make AirTunes as 802.11n compatible (yet!).
Here's a work-around that works; connect your AirTunes to your AAE with an Ethernet cable. Your AirTunes box will still advertise it's speakers as it did for your 802.11 b/g network but now your streamed-music will go, via your 802.11n connection, to your AAE and then via wired-ethernet to your AirTunes.
This arrangement is proving so successful I've moved my iTunes music library to an AirDisk and my 802.11n network is easily handling iTune's data-traffic. An added bonus is that my AirTunes box is still running a, separate, 802.11 b/g network so I have backward compatability for non-802.11n equipment in our home.
Observation
While experimenting with this work-around I ran a protocol analyser (WireShark) on my iTunes/AirTunes streamed-music data and noticed it uses IPv6! Apple's implemented next-generation IP for iTunes

  • Is This A Possible Work Around for Lack of Firewire Syncing?

I just learned that Apple discontinued firewire syncing on the newer iPods. Oh well, so much for using my sexy Cube as an iTunes server any more since it's non-expandable...
I just came across this firewire hard drive enclosure from OWC.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack-usb
It sports a built in USB2 jack. Does anyone out there own this enclosure AND a 5G iPod? I, and a whole lot of other people, would be grateful if you could plug your Pod into the USB2 jack of this device and report on whether or not it works...
    Thanks in advance.

    Whoops, wrong link:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/
So my exact idea is this:
I want to get a 5G iPod, but don't want to deal with the slow transfer rate of USB 1.1.
Now lets say I buy this enclosure and tell iTunes to use it as my iTunes library destination.
If I connect a 5G iPod to the USB 2 port on the enclosure, the million dollar question is will the transfer rate from the iPod to the iTunes library on that enclosure happen at USB 2 speeds.
Does that make sense? I wouldn't be transferring any data between the computer and the iPod, so technically I wouldn't need USB 2 on the mac. Right?
Now that I think of it, I guess I'm also assuming you can daisy chain USB 2 devices like firewire devices.
Thanks for all of your posts!

  • Possible work-around for v3.0 short battery life

First: be aware there's a difference between "Push" (which is for some email account types & some MobileMe features) and "Push Notifications" (which is for apps). They are controlled in separate Settings screens.
    Short story:
If you've upgraded to v3.0, usually have Wifi ON, and experiencing short battery life, and if you can live without Push Notifications (at least until Apple finds a better solution), TRY TURNING "Push Notifications" OFF.
Alternatively, if you can live without Wifi but need Push Notifications, try turning Wifi off & let the data travel via 3G.
    Long story:
First I ran alternate days with Wifi ON, then Wifi OFF, and noticed with Wifi OFF my battery life was nowhere near as short (I could get through a day), but with Wifi ON, I can barely get through half a day. This is very different to v2.21, and in my setup the only significant difference was Push Notifications being ON.
Then today I've been running continuous pings from my Mac to my iPhone, with various combinations of Push on/off, Push Notifications on/off, email accounts on push / fetch / manual, and discovered there's a huge difference in how often Wifi gets turned on when Push Notifications is enabled.
With Push Notifications ON, while your iPhone 3G (and probably 3GS) is asleep, Wifi will be turned on for 15-20seconds every 1 to 2 minutes!
This is in stark contrast to Push Notifications OFF, but Push (for email, MobileMe, etc) ON, where Wifi is on only as often as your email account settings dictate.
This explains a lot, I think. With Wifi OFF, data goes through the 2G/3G radio, which is inherently ON all the time (for phone functionality), so the incremental 'cost' (to battery life) of Push Notifications is comparatively small.
But with Wifi enabled, data is instead sent via Wifi. The incremental cost (to battery life) is dramatically higher having to turn on the Wifi radio, find the WLAN, get an IP from DHCP, then exchange data with various Internet servers, when it happens every couple of minutes!
Though I'm not really sure what Apple can do about this situation. They appear to be turning Wifi on frequently to give the illusion of true (ie timely) push notifications. I think this situation runs parallel to those who found, with v2.x, that enabling Push on email accounts & Wifi enabled had similar major negative impact on battery life. Except now heaps more people want the Push Notification feature. Interesting conundrum...

The main thing that helped me with the short battery life was lowering the brightness. My 3G was so bright I could'nt sleep at night.

  • Server 2003 R2 sp2 on IBM T42: is there a work-around for getting bluetooth to work?

I have seen a few forums here and there talking about possible work-arounds for the lack of a bluetooth stack in server 2003, and they have not worked.
    The driver here:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-50245.html
Installs without compalint, but after reboot, cannot find a bluetooth device. The bluetooth service starts and runs happily.
I found a hack-around solution involving update Q323183 for tricking 2003 into installing a bluetooth stack elsewhere, it also failed to return any results.
Has anyone figured this one out?

    welcome to the forum!
i had this working on my T42p back in the day but that was 6 years ago.   it installed using the driver from IBM and the MS BT stack.   i'm about 95% sure i was using the standard version of 2003 which by default includes a BT stack.   enterprise and datacenter do not since there's no logical reason for either one to be running bluetooth due to security risks.

  • Does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

"You can use the AirPort Express to extend the signal provided by the new AirPort, but the Express will not extend "ac" wireless since it does not have that capability. The Express will extend an "n" wireless signal if that helps."
This is what I am trying to understand.
So AXTRM w/ sep SSID for 2.4 (b/g/n) - call it SSID1 - and 5GHz (ac) call it SSID2 - WiFi Explorer confirms AC mode on 5G.
Using an AXPRESS to extend - I have the option of SSID1 b/g/n *and* the 5GHz ac SSID2 in the pulldown (it sees both?) --> if I select SSID1, it also extends this same SSID in 5GHz (both showing b/g/n) >> so I now have 3 signals on SSID1 (XTRM 2.4G, XPRS 2.4G and XPRS 5G) b/g/n and one signal on SSID2 (XTRM 5G AC) ac
    If I select the 5Ghz ac SSID2 to extend - it prompts me "do you also want to extend (the 2.4GHz SSID1)?" --> select yes and I now have 2 signals for SSID (XTRM 2.4G & XPRS 2.4G) b/g/n and 2 signals on SSID2 (XTRM 5G 802.11ac & XPRS 5G 802.11 a//n)
Is the 5G SSID2 actually being extended from the Airport Extreme to the Express?
The reason I bring this up is I am having a lot of issues since iOS8 came out (especially on iPhone 6). Everything I am reading is pointing to when people have 2 AP's set to use the same SSID. When you walk to a part of the house where 5G 802.11 ac signal marginalizes, the phone does not immediately hand over to the 5G 802.11 a/n Airport Express.
My thought was separate the SSID's but to me, if the Express can't extend 5Ghz from the Extreme, it's taking a step backwards. I am better off getting a more powerful router like an ASUS and going with one AP, drop the WiFi roaming altogether
    Any thoughts?

  • Work around for iPad V's kindle?

Many posts declaring the differences between the kindle and the iPad seem to ignore that the iPad NEEDS wifi connection to download a book and the kindle does not. I am a Macaholic since forever, but I think this is a significant difference.
I am verbally accosted at dinners or parties about this. Many people I know a
Were ready to flip to the iPad but this has stopped them...for instance they can download a book on the beach with the kindle and not on the iPad. Here. Is my question..could using the kindle app be a work around for this issue?
Thanks in advance for any responses!

Ian, I guess I struck a nerve with you
Honest, I am not out to bash a company I have only the utmost respect and admiration for, no parody on my words is needed.
However, if a friend says he can go to the beach/out in his back yard and download a book...why would I try to argue his rational point? In fact if he is done with his book he has been reading and wants to either preview or buy another...he is S.O.L.
These are people that have had a kindle for awhile and are not really high profile Mac users...or even well initiated Internet users
In trying to become adoptive of the Apple concept and possibly first time Apple users...they are pointing out why they considered and then chose not to flip to the Ipad
Having myself practically every new laptop/desktop and gizmo Apple has produced since the 90's I must say I went for the wifi model only b/c I did not want another fee from AT&T
I just believe Apple missed on the ability to directly download books without a fee based system...and one could probably point to their unattractive association with ATT&T to blame it on!!

There is a way to do this.
But it works or not, I have no idea.
    Enable  "Develop menu".
    Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click the Develop menu and select "User Agent"
There are choices. Do not forget to make Safari default again afterwards.

Nic, for me the iTunes window looks like this, when I connect my iPad 3:
I select the iPad in the "devices" section of the Sidebar (use: "View > Show Sidebar" if the sidebar is hidden).
Click the "Apps" tab in the "Devices" pane.
Scroll all the way down in the Devices pane to "File Sharing" "Apps" section.
Then do I click "GarageBand" to select the documents in the right panel.
Which part is different for you? Perhaps you could post a screenshot?

  • Work around for radio tuner service not working

A work around for the lack of radio tuner service that has appearently hit Itunes versions lower than 11.
We all hope that Apple will restore Radio Tuner Service for us legacy products users soon, but I've been thrown under the bus more than once by Apple in the last 25 yrs to put much hope in that (I started with an Apple III w/a Z80 card running C/PM, yeah I'm that old)
Have your iTunes and your favorite browser open.
In your browser go to http://vtuner.com/setupapp/guide/asp/BrowseStations/startpage.asp
This will give you a list of Genre's, etc of streaming internet stations.
When you select a genre you'll get a list of stations that shows station ID, what type of feed codec and data rate.
Select any of the AAC or MP3 feeds.
    Select play.
This will send a small download file to your computer containing the selected feeds URL.
Your computer will ask what app to use to open the file, select iTunes.
This will automatically open a file called Internet Songs at the end of Playlists in iTunes (if you don't already have one), and will install the URL there.
All the stations you selected will now be permanently stored in Internet Songs.
Viola, your very own custom personal internet radio playlist!

Apperently iTunes 11 is not affected (Apple stil makes iTunes11 for the 14 yr old Microsoft XP OS, but not for anything PPCs can run. Go figure)
"Next door" to Steve was metaphoric, he lived in Los Altos, about 15 miles away, but he cast a big shadow!
On 9.2.1/10.4.11 differences, some time in the past someone selected 'save file' and checked the box 'don't ask again' on your computers dialog box. That's why you're not given a choice wih the file downloads. I would think that selection should be able to be reversed.
iTunes 9.2.1/OS10.4.11 puts those downloaded URLs into the Music Libary of iTunes, no matter if it's opened directly, or you click on the file on your desktop. You can create a new playlist, highlight the selection in the Music Libary, and drag it to your new playlist to keep alll the steaming URLs together. NOTE, this only creates an alias, the URL copied by iTunes must remain in the Music Libary. You can then delete the the files on the desktop, if you want. I did multiple stations this way in 9.2.1, they all show in either the new playlist created, or in the Music Libary, and remain after the desktop files are deleted and trash emptied.
You can switch sations by double clicking them. Another note, all the URLs were all from vtune.
    I hope this helps.
PS, I forgot how clunky Tiger is compared to Leopard...

  • Work around for User ID 32 character limitation in CCX Agent?

Are there any kind of creative work arounds for getting past the ridiculous 32 character limit when logging into the CCX Agent?
We are moving toward using the User Principal Name (UPN) in CUCM LDAP which means that the domain is now tacked onto the end of their existing User IDs.  We are doing this so that users from multiple domains can authenticate to various Cisco tools and apps.  It works very well, except when firing up the Agent!
I've already been playing around with UPN suffixes, and while I can get them to show up in CUCM (and subsequently), I can't seem to get them to authenticate.
I shouldn't even have to get this creative, just remove the 32 character limit, Cisco!
We are running CCX 8.5 and CUCM 8.6

    Hi ,
I am not aware about any such workarounds.
After referring to the below guide,
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/crs/express_8_5/configuration/guide/uccx851ag.pdf
On page 78, it is mentioned as,
Caution : When logging into Cisco Agent Desktop, agents use the Unified CM user ID and password. While the Unified CM limits agent IDs to 128 alphanumeric characters, the Unified CCX limits agent IDs to 31 alphanumeric characters. Be sure to abide by the 31 character-limit when configuring agents in Unified CM.
I am sure even if it works by some workarounds also, you may see some issues specially from the CAD\CSD\CDA side, which Cisco will not support it quoting the same above reason.
    Hope it helps,
    Anand

  • Work around for 60 column limitation

    All,
Does anyone know of a work around for the 60 column table limitation?
Will this be changed in a future release?
    Thank you.

I also need a workaround for this. I have users that want to download data as excel files, and the built in export to csv was working great until the dynamic sql statement pushed itself to more then 60 columns. Is there some other way to provide a link to the data as csv? Can I hook into the csv functionality of HTML DB? Can I create a page template that modifies the Content-Disposition and/or Content-Type so the browser thinks the page is csv/excel so that I could dump out a clob of data I put together? Should I just have a button that provides a link to something outside HTML DB to query and dump data from the database?
As it is, the users really don't need to see the data on the screen. I just need a way to dump 60+ columns of data to the user as csv.

  • Work around for Excel's array formulae?

I have an Excel spreadsheet which I have built over many years to manage maintenance tasks of my boat. I would like to convert this to run on Numbers. Unfortunately I can't find a work-around for Excel's "Array Formulas".
The column headers of my spreadsheet contain maintenance tasks (plus data on how frequently by days or engine hours these jobs need to done). When I complete a maintenance task, I log the date and engine hours in a new row with an "x" to signify that the job is done. Excel then looks up the date/engine hours when each job was last done (ie the lowest "x") and then uses conditional formatting to highlight the column headers of which jobs are overdue. Is there a work around for this in Numbers?
I attach an image shot of my Excel spreadsheet which may help:

    Hi Rich,
    Some made-up dates.
If you have multiple x's in a column, change all but the most recent to "Done" or something other than x This approach looks for the date in Column A that matches a single x in a task column.
This example works on years. I hope you change your oil and filter more often .
One Header Row and four Footer Rows. Enter Years between services (D9) from the keyboard.
To find the date of the last service (the only x in Column D)
    D10 contains this formula:
    =INDEX($A,MATCH("x",D,0))
You can Fill Right to other columns.
"Years since" (D11) contains this formula:
    =YEAR(TODAY())-YEAR(D10)
    "Alert" (D12) contains this formula:
    =IF(D11>D9,"Hey, You!", "OK")
Conditional Formatting in D12 sets the text to red if it equals "Hey, You!"
It would be best to combine these steps into one complex formula. Numbers is slowed down with each Header or Footer in a Table.
    Regards,
    Ian.
