Possible Workaround for iTunes skipping / crackling

Right, following the recent number of complaints regarding iTunes 7, I've done some work on the problem and have found a possible solution.
The new UI seems to take far more CPU power and RAM than it's predecessor, so here's a fix that may help on some systems. Please note that you MUST be running Windows XP for this to work:
1) When you first load iTunes, press Ctrl + Alt + Del,
2) Choose the tab labeled "Processes", and find iTunes.exe in the list displayed
3) Right click on this, and choose "Set Priority > Above Normal"
Close Task Manager, and hope that this works
I have tried this on two systems, and it seems to work. Please post your success / failure stories

hey wsup i came across this forum and i must say its a start. I tested it on my videos and i noticed less lag and choppiness in the videos than before yet there are still some. I noticed the videos mainly lag when im wathign a video and using AIM on my laptop. ITs a start yet and its better than where i was before, but i dont wanna have to set priority to itunes and then just have all my other applications lagg.
So for now the videos are ok, but i dont wanna divert so much memory to itunes. Soo thnx for the solution. Better than what anone else has come up with lol ight get back to me if u find anymore solutions thnx

  • Complicated possible workaround for Keynote to Quick Time issues etc.??

I've been experiencing many of the issues already presented here. This is obviously a major issue that Apple may already be trying to fix for an update, but they never tell anyone what they are doing. My project contains .mov files with audio and they just don't behave, the audio is off and movie files either play with disjoionted audio, or, freeze on the first frame. Also, half the transitions don't export to quick time, idvd or any other format I've tried.
For those with 2 computers and a little extra hardware, I've got a possible workaround that "may" at least get the project rolling again. I hooked my MacBook Pro into my Eye TV 250 and switching to AV input, simply played the presentation I'd recorded with all my timings and transitions through the Eye TV box into my desktop computer. I then exported the live recording through the Eye TV software to a .mov file and all the transistions and audio seemed to be the way I set them up. I then brought this movie into Garage Band and added a backing track.
Eye250 is not ideal for commercial projects because I seem to have some quality loss, BUT, I was importing to a G4 mac Mini so maybe that's an issue as well. If anyone else has an external digital video input device and two Intel machines, could they please try this out and see if the quality is HD.
If this works, it would at least be a workaround for guys with commercial projects on deadline until Apple fixes their software. Appreciate any input!!!!

Sadly, IP printing is not a feasible solution for me. When I configure it as you've described, the print job goes to the queue and stalls with this message--
Network host '192.168.0.187' is busy; will retry in 10 seconds...
This print-once-then-never-again issue is very frustrating. Airport express has been an unreliable print server from the get-go. The firmware hasn't been updated in two years and Apple has never published a list of supported USB printers. It's one of those things they want reps in the apple store to be able to verbally tell people that the product will do, but in writing, "good luck with that."
I'm getting on Amazon right now to find a real print server. AE is a burner of time.

  • Possible workaround for CSCed41207

    Hi,
Maybe not a real solution, but could be used as a workaround for bug CSCed41207 (CallManager needs support for MGCP fractional PRI).
You can set the B channels which are unavailable (because it's a fractional PRI) to maintenance mode with the following service parameter.
"Cisco Callmanager" service. Select advanced. Under "Clusterwide Parameters (Device - PRI and MGCP Gateway)" use the "Change B-Channel Maintenance Status #" parameter to disable the unavailable channels.
Example, if you have a E1 with 15 channels available, set the parameter to:
    S1/[email protected] = 0000 0000 0000 0000 1111 1111 1111 1111
A 1 disables the channel. Always enable channel 16 because this is the D channel (for a E1).
You can use this for up to 5 gateway's. I've used this solution for fractional PRI with MGCP numerous times and it works!

    Hi Dirk
Thanks for sharing the workaround solution for "CSCed41207".
We are working on new capabilities, where you can see relevant bug related discussions in the bug details page itself.
Discussion posts like yours, will show in the bug details page of "CSCed41207" and other Cisco Bug Toolkit users can benefit from this knowledge.
Please continue to share such experiences in the future.

  • Found a possible solution for iTunes constantly reopening

My iTunes kept reopening every time I closed it - like 20-30 times in a row, with me quitting, force quitting, etc., even as my force quit window was up. I would force quit the application but it's logo wouldn't disappear. Searching around on these forums I poked around a bit and figured out that when I hid my RAC (Red Alarm Clock widget, which works with itunes, though isn't constantly playing), I could quit without the icon popping right back up. So if you're having this problem you might try hiding (you don't have to delete it, just move it from the main dashboard) any widgets that work with iTunes.

For a more systematic approach see Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.

  • My solution for iTunes skipping

I noticed that iTunes doesn't skip immediately after boot up and when first logging in, but that if I start iTunes after I've been doing something else on my PC, that it sometimes does. I then discovered that if I logged off and then logged back in again, that this sometimes solved the problem of skipping. I concluded that it must be some kind of memory problem. I have a utility on my PC called Tweak-XP and this has an option to optimise the RAM - 'to reorganise the physical RAM and release as much RAM as possible'. I have discovered that if I close all applications down, run this option and then launch iTunes, then the skipping problem goes away. It works for me. I can only assume that there must still be other bits of residual programs left in the RAM and it's these which cause a conflict with iTunes. The clipboard also gets flushed out and emptied in the optimisation, so maybe it could also be this being full of residual stuff that causes the problems. I'm using iTunes 7.1. I presume that by launching iTunes as the first application after any flushing of RAM or the clipboard, that it must then 'hold on' to certain areas of memory for itself, and not let other application access those same areas of memory. Can anyone from Apple confirm this?
Hence, my suggestion is to force your PC to either clear the clipboard and/or RAM of any residual programs that are still there. You therefore need a utility to do this, or try logging off and then back on again and launch iTunes as the first application.
      Windows XP Pro

It sounds to me like the iTunes problem is managing RAM that is swapped to disk. I have 1GB of memory and I never get skipping problems - I wonder if those experiencing these have 512MB or less RAM in their system.
I am a bit surprised to hear there are still memory-management programs out there when most systems have plentiful memory. I haven't used something like that since Windows 3.1

  • Possible workaround for: Launch Debugger Error "Unable to connect to the RDS server"

I do not yet have a reproducible case for this. *Sometimes* ColdFusion Builder throws the "Unable to connect to the RDS server" error, when attempting to start a debug session against a remote server. However, "RDS Dataview" and "RDS Fileview" views correctly list the servers and their related data/file, and testing RDS connection result is "Test connection was successful". The workaround is:
    1. Login to the ColdFusion Administrator
    2. Navigate to "Debugger Settings" page (beneath "Debugging & Logging")
    3. Click on "Stop Debugger Server" -or- "Restart Debugger Server"
    4. Restart ColdFusion Application Server
    Notes:
    a) Step #3 must be done via ColdFusion Administrator, not via ColdFusion Admin API (stopLineDebugger()|restartLineDebugger())
    b) Step #4 can be done via ColdFusion Administrator -or- ColdFusion Builder
    c) Note that there is a CF9 Release Note for Bug #78488: "When a server having "Windows service option" ENABLED is added as a remote server, then Start-Stop-Restart operation cannot be done on it."  However, I've found that "Restarting" a remote server, that is running as a Windows service, is possible in ColdFusion Builder (at least this is so on standalone developer edition).  Like Bug #78488 says, I am unable to "Stop|Start" a remote server that is running as a Windows service. I'm just mentioning all of this, due to my suggestion in "b", that CF can also be restarted via ColdFusion Builder.
It is interesting that attempts to stop|restart the debugger server, via CF Admin API, do not resolve the issue. So, it seems that the "Stop Debugger Server" and "Restart Debugger Server" buttons, in CF Admin, are doing more than calling the corresponding CF Admin API methods.
Attached is an image of the error.
Just posting all of this as an FYI, in case it helps anyone.
    Thanks!,

(OH.. I'm unable to attach images at this time *DOH!* ..well, I'll try to remember to update this post w/ the image, once I see that attachments are allowed.)
I'll try to describe the error message window:
    - It is 494x452 pixels
    - Title of the window is "Error occurred while launching the Debugger"
    - Body content of the window is as follows:
Unable to connect to the RDS server 'ServerNameHere'
Ensure that the server is currently running and that line debugging and RDS are enabled. You may also need to check your RDS connection settings in Eclipse to ensure that they are correct.
    Error Message:
-1:Error connecting to JVM for debugging at localhost:5005. Could not attach to the VM at port 5005. You must specify this debugger port in the JVM settings of your application server, for example: -Xdebug -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=5005. • A possible workaround for C2D Airport problems?

A collegue advised the other day to download iStumbler, a free application that seems to sit and monitor all connections coming in your Airport, also for Bluetooth, Bonjour, etc.
Well, I did... and ever since this thing started to work seeing my Network wifi the airport bars has returned back to the maximum level and there has been no connection drops, re-connecting flawlessly after sleep.
Its funny also how iStumbler is able to see more Network wifis than the Airport menu: I see 2, sometimes 3 connections that I never saw on the Airport menu.
The signal is reported to be at 70% with a 13% noise. But working great!
Can someone with Airport problems try this solution and see if it works too? Maybe we are into something?
    Regards,
    -- Carlos

I had installed istumbler a couple of days ago it did seem to improve the signal for a period then the signal dropped back to the normal 4/5 bars.
After your post I started istumbler again and found there was an update the purports to solve signal problems with core 2 Duo macs.
I have updated and have full signal strength for last 5 minutes longer than ever before.
    Fingers crossed

  • Possible Workaround for Whine

Ok so i have had my MacBook for like 3 weeks now and I absolutely love it and yeah it has the whine but it is very faint doesnt bother me. Anyway so I just got a wireless Mighty Mouse and just realized while the mouse and the MacBook are paired there is absolutely no whine. I just thought some of you guys would like to know or would know why it does this. It still whines with Bluetooth turned on but with the mouse it completely goes away.
MacBook 2GHz and 2 gigs of ram 80 gig   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Recent ruminations postulate the whine may occur under OSX when the CoreDuo processors go into a deep sleep mode during times of low activity under normal usage. So having something running which prevents the CPU from being inactive enough to power down like this, as it were, accordingly prevents the whine. It doesn't surprise me that a bluetooth device would function this way. Your CPU temps are probably also slightly hotter and battery life shorter, which seems to be the case with the other work-arounds people have discovered. I use voodoo (check out the following thread):

If you want to have the old behaviour, you can:
use trace flag 272 - this will cause a log record to be generated for each generated identity value. The performance of identity generation may be impacted by turning on this trace flag.
use a sequence generator with the NO CACHE setting (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff878091.aspx)

  • I recently bought a new iMac as well as a wireless time capsule and have it connected how can I use this external drive as the location to store all my files for iTunes, or is this even possible?

New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes?  I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.

I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion.

  • HT1420 Possibility to use 1 Computer - configured with 2 user accounts - each account uses a different Apple-ID for iTunes authorization ?

I wonder if it is possible to use 1 Computer (Macbook Pro)
    - configured with 2 (ore even more) user accounts (i.e. me + my kid)
    - and each user account has a different Apple-ID (account) for iTunes purchases & iTunes authorization ?
I woud think that is fine in terms of the underlying license agreement refereing to re-download purchased movies, shows, apps, etc.
However, it seams that there is that miraculous 90 days restriction, which I don't understand, and which allows me only to "authorise" the Computer under one or the other account. The switch is unfortunatelly only possible every 90 days ?!?
    Thanks anybody for help
    Oliver

The 90 day association doesn't stop you authorising an account, it only stops you from using another account for iTunes Match or automatic downloads or redownloading its past purchases : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627
There are a few methods listed on this page for how you could do it e.g. multiple user acounts, same iTunes but you having separate playlists, separate iTunes libraries : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495

  • ITunes Match/iOS 7 iPhone music workaround for excessive data usage?

I just got an email from AT&T indicating I had exceeded 150GB of home data usage this month. It was because I used my home wifi to download 5000 songs to my iPhone from iTunes Match to fill it.
I'm frustrated, since it used to be so easy to make iTunes Match work for a large amount of music: In iOS 6 what I used to do (if I had to restore iPhone and set up as new phone): Plug iPhone 5 into computer, set up phone as new, check "manually manage music and videos" and "prefer 128kbps" and make sure iTunes Match was off in phone settings. Then drag & drop 5000 songs (about 40GB) from iTunes into phone. Once that was completed (a couple of hours), I could disconnect the iPhone from my Mac, turn iTunes Match to "on" in phone settings, and I'd get a message on the phone saying "All music on this device will be replaced" which is fine, but other than taking a while to update the remainder of my iCloud stored music, it used very little data.
Fast-forward to this past weekend. After updating to iOS 7.0.2 and having to do a restore and set up as new iPhone, this approach didn't work: When the step came "All music on this device will be replaced," all of the 5000 songs entirely re-downloaded all over again, which took 27 hours and burned through 40+ GB of home data (not phone data, since I was on Wifi). I kept my phone at home, plugged in and on wifi all weekend so as not to burn through all of my LTE data.
What is the deal? If I have to do this again (let's hope iOS 7.0.3 or 7.1 doesn't force my phone into recovery mode again), I certainly don't have the time or patience to let iTunes Match redownload all music again, and I certainly don't want to use up 40+ GB of home data.
Is there a workaround for this? Have others been successful transferring music via computer first and then turning on Match without problem in iOS 7.0.2? I'm sure it worked that way in iOS 6, and without completely redownloading all the music again, since that process would have taken several hours and a lot of home data, and I have not had any problems like this prior to iOS 7.

I think a better question is why do you "have to" restore your iPhone and set it up as a new device as often as you seem to? This seems to be more of a problem for you.
I followup question is why do you have iTunes Match turned on if you're syncing all your music to your iPhone?
Perhaps you should examine how you're using your iPhone and iTunes Match?

To answer this question, yes I have. It has always worked this way for me.

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for replying.  I've been looking at your posts about setting up iTunes using an external drive.  A bit of background info.  My old computer broke down, so I got a new one from work.  I've always kept my music files on my external drive (I have around 170GB of music).  I didn't follow the suggestions in the "migrate iTunes library" post because my old computer died on me.  However, I've looked at your posts about lay out of the iTunes folders.  Before connecting to iTunes on the new computer, I had reorganized my iTunes folder on my E: external drive, and created an iTunes folder which contains an iTunes Media subfolder.  The music files are in a Music folder, which is in the iTunes Media folder.  I've also put the following files in my iTunes folder: iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, as well as sentinel.  I then followed the advice you gave bmw99 on 2 Nov 2013 at 9.58 (sorry, can't copy the exact answer).
Just to clarify:  I'd like to keep all my music media on the E: external hard drive (the computer hard drive is too small), and I'm aware i might never have my playlists back, and that all the songs in my library might be ticked.  However, I don't want my library to be duplicated.
I'm at work at the moment, but will be back home in about 10 hours, so I can be more specific about folders / files names.
I'm glad you picked up my message and greatly appreciate your help.
