Possibly Broken Drive

I know that there's about fifty kabillion questions about drives, but nothing seems to help my specific problem.
I'm required to have an iBook G4 at my school, and every summer we have to turn in our computers so the tech office can re-image them for the new school year. This year, my drive has gotten worse and worse. The first thing I noticed was that when I put a DVD in, iDVD did not start automatically, like it used to. I couldn't get it to work, and I haven't tried since. What I'm most concerned about are CDs. At first, I could use them just fine. Then I noticed that sometimes the disc would be rejected or would not eject. It got more frequent, and now I can put a disc in but the computer does not detect it. Because of that I can't eject it without restarting my computer. Underneath my keyboard, the drive appears to be slightly dented.
Is there any way to fix the problem myself? I'd much rather try that than have to bring to the tech office because then I'd lose a lot of my documents, pictures, music, etc. and I would have to use a spare.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

weeearocketship, Welcome to the discussion area!
Did you just recently drop or drive over the iBook? If not, that "dent" has probably always been there and has no bearing on what you are experiencing.
Have you cleaned the drive lately? or at all? Dust can build up on the laser lens and cause problems.
Before taking the iBook to anyone for repair, copy your important documents or make an entire clone of the drive to an external FireWire drive.

  • Possible to drive a stepper motor with PCI-6111?

Is it possible to drive a stepper motor with PCI-6111?

    Hello Tristan,
If your stepper motor is TTL compatible you should be able to control it with one of the two counters on the board. Keep in mind that the stepper will ask for a certain amount of power so before attaching it track down how much power it consumes and take a look at the Specifications of the PCI-6111 to be sure that the counters on the board can deliver that amount. If the stepper takes to much power you have to use some kind of power drive which can be controlled with digital (TTL) signals or Analog signals between -10V and +10V.
    Hope this helps.

  • A205-S5000 won't boot. Says possible hard drive problem

Laptop won't boot and says possible hard drive problem. Need to recover
personal reports and data, so thinking of removing the drive and using an enclosure
so the data, if still good, can be extracted from the drive by another computer. Question
is, will I be able to create the restore cd's from the hard drive if the hard drive is not the
boot drive ie; attached to a 2nd computer via usb and enclosure.
If it's not possible, I can try to create cd's from a different model laptop (toshiba), same vista os but
what about the product key?  I will try to reinstall the bad drive and try a reboot to recovery mode but
I doubt that is going to work or complete. Idea was to get a new drive and try to install recovery disks.

Recovery discs must be from an identical model. If you can't burn them from that computer, best to order them

  • Possible Hard Drive Failure - Please Help

    Hello everyone.
I have a 24" Aluminum iMac (Mid 2007 model, I believe) that was purchased around November 2007. The internal hard drive is 500 GB (roughly 300 GB for OS X and 200 GB for Windows XP). My problem is that my iMac doesn't want to boot into OS X. Please note that I can still access my Windows XP partition by holding the option when the computer starts up.
Here's a list of the things I've tried so far:
-Calling the support number: The gentleman took me through some basic trouble shooting steps (including booting in Single User Mode and typing the fsck command) but couldn't resolve the issue, so he gave me a case number and made an appointment at a local Apple store which I could not attend. I have yet to reschedule another appointment.
-Booted the "sick" Mac in Target Disk Mode while connecting it to another "savior" Mac via FireWire: Nothing. The target Mac goes into TDM correctly (FireWire logo bounces around screen), but the savior Mac did not recognize it. (The drive didn't mount?) This was the case with two different savior Macs.
-Booted in Verbose Mode: I held down Command+V while booting the computer. The trouble seems to arise directly after the line "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: Intialization complete". The next step results in an error reading "disk0s2: I/O error.", then the computer shuts down after about 45 seconds.
-Inserted "Mac OS X Install Disc 1": I held down option and selected to boot from the CD. I chose English as the main language. When the welcome screen pops up (to re-install Leopard), I instead chose to run the Disk Utility option from the menu bar. I see my hard drive (465.8 GB) which is split into two partitions ("Macintosh HD" which I assume is disk0s2, and "disk0s3" which I assume is my Windows XP partition). I attempt to verify disk permissions on "Macintosh HD" but it almost immediately bumps back with an error saying "First Aid failed. Disk Utility stopped verifying permissions on 'Macintosh HD' because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Next, I click on Verify Disk instead of Verify Disk Permissions. The errors in the details list (red colored text?) include "Incorrect number of thread counts", "Invalid node structure", "Volume check failed", and "Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
-Tried to make an image of my current disk onto an external HD connected through FireWire: I thought this looked bad, so I figured I could re-install Leopard entirely. However, I have years of data on this hard drive that are irreplaceable (my fault for not backing it up to begin with). I hooked up a brand new 1 TB external drive via FireWire800. In Disk Utility, I can see the 1 TB external alongside my 500 GB internal. I clicked on the "Macintosh HD" disk and clicked "New Image" and directed it to create an image of my internal drive on my external drive. I click Save. After about five seconds, it bounces back with an error reading "Unable to create 'Macintosh HD.dmg'. (Input/output error)".
    Questions:
    1. What the heck happened? Is the problem the result of a head crash? Is it a problem in the boot sector?
    2. Is there any possible way to recover the data on the hard drive?
    3. Does a failure like this get covered by Apple Care Protection Plans? (the computer is covered, by the way)
Thank you very very much in advance. Sorry for the huge amount of text. :-x

Buy Disk Warrior and use it to repair your OS X volume (if it's repairable.) If DW cannot repair the volume then use Disk Utility to reformat the volume using the Zero Data (one pass) Security option.
Do you have a backup of your OS X volume? Since you have tried using TDM to access the drive without success it's reasonable to assume your data may be lost. If you have an external hard drive you can use, then you could attempt to use file recovery software to see if your data are recoverable.
At this point it is premature to assume the drive is bad since your Windows volume is functional. If you have Windows software for reading Mac drives you may try accessing the OS X volume from Windows.
    Basics of File Recovery
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • IPod - Possible Hard Drive Problem

My iPod is no longer syncing, it comes up with erros when I try to sync.
I suspect the hard drive is bad.
I have done a restore (it didn't work until I formatted the disk in Windows), and this has not solved the problem. I ran the diag mode and it came up with this on the hard drive test (SMART):
    Retracts:                     10
    Reallocs:                    376
    Pending Sectors:           0
    PowerOn Hours:         2334
    Start/Stops:              22405
    Temp Current:             38C
    Temp:                     Min 1C
    Temp:                    Max 52C
Is my hard disk gone? Could I possibly fix it?
The start/stops number is high, but I have no idea what normal looks like.

Have you tried renaming you iPod. Perhaps Windows will see it as a new volume then?
If that doesn't work perhaps try restoring your iPod as doing so will reformat the hard drive. If Windows still asks after that, at least you know the iPod's not at fault.
You could also try reformatting your computer and completely reinstalling Windows if the error message still continues and is really bothers you.
Once you clear the message and you see iTunes freezing again, perhaps try restarting the computer rather then disconnecting the iPod.

  • Possible Hard Drive Issue?? How to test?

I recently upgraded to Leopard this weekend, seems to be running "snappy" in some parts, but I might have an issue with HD possibly reading slow. Sometimes when I do certain functions (open certain files or programs) I get beachballing. This is the same issue I had in Tiger on the final 2 months I had this PB. For the years I have owned this PB I only started to have this beachballing within the last two months. It starting after a bad crash in Labor day (it was stuck on beachball for 3 days while I was out of town) at first the PB could not see the internal HD until I did a matter of things with installing Tiger on a external HD, resetting everything. Once I was able to get teh HD to show up as a device installed in the computer I recovered the files and zeroed out and formatted. From that point I had the beachballing and audible click of the HD (which I never had before). I know the clicking is indicative of a dying hard drive, yet upon zeroing out and reformatting i get the beachballs and the drive has passes the disk verify and all the SMART tests I have tossed at it. I also have checked out the Console and have not seen a single IODATA error string of anytype. I did notice when I installed Leopard it took over an hour and a half and the same with WoW (possibly longer, I was AFK per disc), however on transfering data to the external HD and over the network seems like access speed is fine. With activity monitor up, it's telling me that I have about 247megs of free ram available to the system at most times. Can anyone recommend anything I can test performance and some numbers I can look at to compare? I would hate to spend money on a replacement HD and find out the actuallty controller was defective and that all HD's would act in this sluggish manner.(HD install is the original Hitachi 60gb, 4200rpm). Possible replacement HD would be a Seagate 120 5200rpm.

    jammer:
You have the original HDD, which is the slower HDD. You also have what might be a failing HDD. (The only surefire result on S.M.A.R.T Status is a Failing grade. Verified means that it is OK at the moment, but can't promise you anthing.)
    Here's what I suggest:
    1. Make sure your RAM is maxxed out.
    2. Install a new HDD. Whether 5400 rpms or 7200 rpms, you will notice improved performance.
    3. Be sure you have an up-to-date, reliable backup (clone to an external firewire HDD), especially if you keep the old drive, but you should anyway.
    4. Put your old (removed) Hdd in a firewire enclosure and use it as an external HDD.
Please do post back with further questions/comments.

  • Is it possible to drive REXROTH pneumatic actuator which requires 24V & 500mA,, using LabVIEW ? if Yes, can anyone please guide me regarding the same ? I'm doing my project , so badly need info.

    Hello,
I'm doing project which requires pneumatic actuator. Available actuator in our college is REXROTH BOSCH pnuematic actuator. which requires 24V and 500mA drive. Also it has to be timing controlled (I mean it should be ON & OFF, software controlled)
I have attached snap of my LabVIEW block diagram. Here, comparator output has to drive Pneumatic actuator. Also we have NI 9485, 8 channel Solid State Relay (SSR), is it possible to use it in my project?
Thank you, your help is much appreciated...

    I apologize for my mistake,
    I'm new to this community...
Image which I've tagged , contains 2 O/Ps from comparator.. I need to drive actuator from those O/Ps...
After processing Image & calculating number of particles, depending upon those numbers, i want to drive Actuator which i've specified earlier...

  • Mini mac and a possible broken charger unit

In a discussion with a mate he asked if I ever had problems with charger units on my mac.
He uses a mini mac in connection to an external harddrive. That external harddrive currently died during runtime.
The mini mac itself was running fine till then - but it keeps shutting itself down after 5 minutes. No chance on reboot to run it again.
Only after removing the charger from the house power socket it is rebootable.
I never had any issues with the apple chargers yet myself. Might be that the step into virtual nirvana of the external harddrive damaged the charger, though I am not aware if the charger have a return line / return duct.
Does anyone here has experience with such kind of trouble shooting?
    Cheers in advace

Several thoughts come to mind, the first of which being that the mini doesn't have a 'charger' - it has an external power brick - thus it can't run unless it is plugged in.
That aside, to troubleshoot this problem it would really be better to have the owner/user of this system post here rather than you, simply because that would give us a first hand description of the problem and allow us to ask questions about the system and its behaviour. Doing it this way can make trying to work out what's going on far more difficult.
For example, what kind of Mac mini is this; how old is it; what is it used for; what software is installed on it; are the shutdowns accompanied by any fan activity; does the system simply shut down or are there any error messages or other dialog boxes on the display; what happens when an attempt is made to reboot it after a shutdown; how much time is needed after shutting down before it starts up again......?
My first reaction to the symptoms as briefly described is that the system is suffering from an overheating problem since the mini is designed to go into protective shutdown if it gets too hot. If that were the case then it would run a lot longer when started from cold than it would when rebooted after running a while. It isn't likely to be a problem with the power supply, since typically these either work or don't, but it isn't possible to rule it out completely until we have more information. The only way that the hard drive's power supply could have an effect is if it failed with a short circuit on the live side, which could be expected to pull down the mini's supply if it were plugged into the same power socket, though it would just as easily blow a house fuse/trip a breaker in that situation.

  • Try to copy data from broken drive

I have external drive which had time machine backup, but the surface is broken (will never get another WD drive), what would be the best way to try and copy as much data as i can? if i use Finder it's just gets stuck, but i want to leave it overnight, so it can try to recover as much as it can?

I already went through migration assistant, what happen is that i had two accounts one for home use as my main user, and one for development. everything was backed up using time machine and i never had problems writting data. so then at some point i decided to reformat my machine and was hoping time machine will restore everyhitng, but after hours, it said IO Error, Skip or Continue, i clicked skip and ended up with only my main account (also email was there), but non of the applications were restored and no my other account. so i can of have no clue how much was restored.
i got drive genius and checked the disc it was having more then 600 bad blocks in 30% scanned which was going on for 24 hours.
So, now i got replacement disc, and want to try using my best to copy all i can, so if i remember i am missing something, i can try to recover it later.

  • Is there a way to get automator to turn off dropbox if my external drive is disconnected and possibly reconnect drive and restart dropbox?

I am using my Time capsule to contain my iPhoto and some larger image folders as I have a 128gb macbook air.
I use dropbox to backup these folders using a program called MacFropAny to create links to these folders on the ext drive.
All works well until the drive is not there and dropbox has a fit and starts to delete all my folders (75gb worth)
This gets quite frustrating... I have an automator script that runs on log in to make sure that the drive is connected, this is cool, but I would like something that says something like:
if drive is disconnected > close dropbox if open > attempt to reconnect drive > if drive is reconnected restart dropbox
Is this possible to have an automator script that "listens" for a drive being disconnected and then run?
    Many thanks in advance.

Yes. Sign in to the iTunes store, click below Quick Links where it says Purchased and start downloading your previous purchases.
If you have content on an iPod then this is an alternative approach:

  • Migrating files from ibook with broken drive

i have an iBook G4 with a broken hard drive and there's a CD stuck in there that won't come out. i just bought a new MacBook Pro. Is there any way to get my files from the old iBook to the new MacBook Pro without installing new software on the old Mac?

with the hard drive damaged will the CD still eject if you hold down the track pad select switch at startup?
If it is free, it should. I don't think it is dependent on the HDD at all. But if it is stuck in there, the trackpad button may not make a difference. Worth a try, anyway.
Here are suggestions of different options:

  • IPod classic possibly broken or damaged?

    Hello,
Not so long ago (around December) I purchased an 80GB iPod Classic. It worked fine up until possibly around March. Now, whenever I turn on the iPod, I hear a faint clicking sound within the system, and the only thing appearing on the screen is the Apple logo, which stays there until the iPod turns off (after a few seconds). I have tried almost every method, such as restoring, however, every time I connect my iPod to iTunes I receive a message stating that the iPod is in "recovery mode" and should be restored. However, every time I attempt to restore, I receive an error message, and it is often a different one every time! I have also tried Disk Mode, etc and nothing seems to be working sadly. So, any help would be appreciated!
P.S: My iPod is connected currently to a Mac.
    Thank You.

The clicking noise suggests there is an issue with the hard drive, especially if forcing the iPod into disk mode and restoring do not resolve the issue. You may want to set up service for your iPod online, or contact AppleCare and have them do it for you.
    http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
    http://www.apple.com/contact/
You can also take your iPod to a Genius Bar at an Apple store (with an appointment) if you have one located near you, and have them replace it for you.

  • Whether it is possible to drive a stepper motor from speedy 3's output

actually i am trying to design an voice controlled wheel chair for my application wat i have did is tat i have writern two programs using labview one is just storing my voice for four commands(namely front ,frontright ,frontleft, stop) ,tat  it stores some value in an array, in my second vi i am speaking one of the four commands, and tat comands amplitude is stroed in an array and i am just comparing it with the values from the first array which i have stored it for all the four commands if any of the array value matches just approximately the i have to make the stepper motor to drive in tat direction i have done it with PIC microcontroller can u give some directions to implement using speedy33

    Hi,
The SPEEDY-33 Robotics Daugher Module is an add-on device that mounts onto the SPEEDY-33 to provide more functionality. It includes:
    DC Motor Drive Outputs (4)
    Auxiliary Servo Motor Outputs (4)
    Analog Inputs (4)
    External Power Supply Connection
Details of the daughter module, you cn find at the link below:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/832F1F4B12ECE1BE862572D100765898?OpenDocument
This daughter module is NOT an NI product.
For connecting a stepper motor, since speedy 33 has digital outputs, it is possible to work a stepper motor. However, you will have to connect a stepper motor drive inorder to amplify the signals to the current specifications that the stepper motor demands. Find out the specs of your motor and choose an appropriate drive.

  • Possible Thunderbolt Drives??

I am looking at purchasing a Thunderbolt Drive for my Early 2011 15inch Macbook Pro, i want to be able to create three partitions on the drive, one for files etc, one for Time Machine and one for a bootable copy of my internal drive via a program such as SuperDuper. Is it possible to make a bootable backup using a Thunderbolt Drive?
Their are two drives i am looking at: LaCie 2TB Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Hard Drive and Seagate 3TB GoFlex Desk for Mac Thunderbolt Hard Drive.
I am wondering which drive is more reliable. I believe the Seagate is some sort of adapter drive/thunderbolt setup and am not sure on how fast the Thunderbolt connection would be compared to the LaCie drive? Another question is can i reformat the LaCie drive into three normal Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partitions for Time Machine and backup etc. I believe the LaCie comes preformated in a RAID setup, i am not wholly comfortable about what RAID is.
I think the LaCie might be the way to go, but i want to be able to set it up with the three partitions like i do with my current WD USB Hard Drive, that allows me to have a bootable partition and Time Machine partition and a general file partition.
Any ideas, help and info would be great!!!!

I've been buying LaCie drives for years and have always been happy with them - in fact, I have a seven-year-old 250GB that is still daisy-chained to my 1 and 2 terabyte G-Drives. Newer WD drives, for some reason, don't seem to get along well with Macs - I see people posting here on a weekly basis having problems with external WD drives and with such new technology... well, I'd just go with the LaCie.
And, yes, you can partition it just as you have your current WD drive. It will just be so much faster.
