Possibly dumb iCal question...

Hi I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question, but I can't seem to find a way around it.
We have a Leopard Server and several Leopard clients, what I would like is some central calendars that everyone has the ability to edit. I can do this using the web calendars that leopard server creates based on security groups but what I really need is the ability to have calendars connected to everyone's iCal that multiple people can edit.
So for example in my iCal I create an appointment and then someone else in their own iCal (on a different machine) can go in and edit/ delete that same appointment.
Is there currently a way to do this using leopard that anyone has successfully done, ideally it would need to work for multiple calendars and be hosted on the server. It seems like it should be REALLY easy. I hope it is and I just haven't figured it out yet...
Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi
Ideally the Server should be an OD Master, DNS must be running somewhere on the network with appropriate records created. Of course iCal and Web Services should also be running. Once you have done that you join the clients to the LDAP Directory using Directory Utility. You don't have to use the Server as the main DNS Server for the clients but it works better if you do. You don't have to use authenticated directory binding and you don't need to create home folders or log in to networked accounts. Next launch iCal > Preferences > Accounts and click + icon. In the user name field key in a user name (must be the shortname) that exists in the LDAP node. It should autofill for you. You should not need to do anything else apart from supplying the password.
Once the calendar has been created you can delegate who can access it. To delegate you simply use the same method in creating the account to find other users. If DNS is as it should be it should autofill. By the side of each name is a tickbox as well as options to define read/write access. You should now be able to see each other's calendars, see changes as well as make changes. They should be able to do the same with yours.
Although the iCal Admin Manual so far has been next to useless - although to be fair it has been updated recently so maybe they may contain something useful? - you should download it as it should list further options you may be interested in. I would also download the Command Line Manual as well. You are going to need it.

  • Possibly dumb Keynote questions

I'm converting a large PPT deck to Keynote, mostly because I hate PPT, but there's two things I can do in it that I can't seem to do in Keynote:
    1) Is there no way to set a slide show to just auto-size to fit the screen? From what I can tell you must set a dimension in pixels. This seems... not helpful especially when I must give the same presentation on different devices.
    2) I want to do a global font change. When I first imported the PPT file I had all kinds of missing-font errors and I was able to substitute e.g. Futura Std but this control does not allow selection of a specific typeface, only a family. So now the entire deck is in Futura Light which is pretty unreadable on a display and I want to change all instances of it to Futura Medium, but I sure can't seem to find a way to do this. Yes I know about master slides and of course the person who prepared the deck did not use them.
I'm also seeing that the transitions aren't working in that some of the slides have things that, er, slide onto the page in PPT but these appear broken in KN in that I have to hit the "next slide" control to get each element on the same slide. This occurs automatically in PPT.

When you change the masters, only the slides built on those masters will change and ONLY if the slide is using elements from the masters. For example, if the PPT content is coming is as headers/bullets, it should work. If, instead, they are text just placed on the page, then you'll have to change it manually.
There's probably a solution that can be found by parsing the presentation's XML file. If you're game for a little elbow grease, I can take apart a presentation and see how to make the change using nothing more than TextEdit.

  • Dumb newbie question -- shell vrs linux console

This is probably a dumb newbie question, but what is the difference between the shell screen and the linux console screen? I used another system before Arch and I believe there was only the shell screen! Does it matter which one is used?  Thanks -- Larry

The console is the 2D text rendering thing. The shell is Bash, just a program that handles your input and has the console as output.
If on the other hand you mean the console at startup, and you call that the console while you call xterm, etc. shells then the answer is different. It's just a matter of configuration if you automatically start X or not. A lot people use gdm or kdm to get a graphical login screen after bootup, others just type "startx" in the console when they want to start X.
You can switch to the console with Ctrl+Alt+Fn where n is a number between 1 and 6. You can switch between consoles with Alt+Fn, X is on the last console, so to go back to X do Alt+F7.

  • Newish to iWeb so excuse the possibly dumb questions!

I am not a web designer also, so technically my skills in web stuff on a mac are basic ( i used to do some basic HTML stuff on a PC). I have my .mac account that I use for my family site, which is fine. But now I have a registered domain for my photography business, so I went ahead and created another web site for that, separate from my family site. I got it all done then went to save it to a folder and it is saying, "the document iweb could not be saved." I have tried a few times but nothing. IT won't even let me publish it to my .mac site. I NEED to get this done and am at my wits end. I am wondering if it would be easier to use the Adobe Creative Suite to design the webpage!
Also, is it easier to FTP the site to the domain server, or to have it at my .mac site, redirected from the new domain?
Last question. Can iWeb do a photo gallery that is more sophisticated than the slideshow option? As a photographer I would like something a little more snazzy that can also be divided by genre (babies, kids, family etc).
    Thanks for any help!

You could publish your photos to a +.Mac Web Gallery+ and make a simple hyperlink to it from your web site. Here's info about +.Mac Web Gallery:+
If you upgrade to iWeb 2 in iLife '08 you can pseudo embed a +.Mac Web Gallery+ into your site: Here's a video tutorial briefly showing that about half-way through:
To really embed your +.Mac Web Gallery+ into a web page, use HTML's IFRAME. Unlike frames created using FRAMESET and FRAME, IFRAME creates a frame that sits in the middle of a regular non-framed web page. IFRAME works like IMG, only instead of putting a picture on the page, it puts another web page.
iWeb 2 in iLife '08 uses IFRAMES to easily embed widgets into web pages via iWeb's +HTML Snippet+ window. Here are instructions to embed a +.Mac Web Gallery+ into an iWeb site via iWeb 2's +HTML Snippet+ window:

  • Installing iTunes (possible dumb question?)

Now I am no computer expert so for the savvy out there I trust you not to laugh at this question!
When you download a file such as iTunes and save it prior to install I understand it is visible as e.g. iTunes.exe. Opening the .exe file will cause a programme to be installed. Understand that.
Now, are you safe to delete the original .exe file you downloaded? This won't mess up your newly installed programme? Presume what goes for iTunes.exe in this regard goes for any .exe file? I would simply like to be in a position to delete any unnecessary files from my PC.
    Comments anyone?
Local retailer custom built pc. Pentium 4 chip 2.4GHz   Windows XP   SP2 20Gb iPod

I always keep the last version of iTunesSetup.exe that I like. So I can go back to it, if there is a crummy update, which some of them have been....
    hi y'all!
i've been religiously keeping a copy of every installer file i've ever downloaded from itunes (and ipod software upaters too) since my 5.0.1.4 install.
the most recent version of it lives on my desktop (for reference purposes, if i can ever find it in that cyberpigsty). when a new itunes version comes out, i go through my ritual of creating a folder for my previous version of iTunesSetup.exe, and tucking it into bed to leave room for the brand spanking new iTunesSetup.exe on my desktop.
(i'm inclined to believe my behavior is a bit perverse in this regard, though.)

  • A possibly dumb question re exporting clip for web use

    Hi,
I've been experimenting with diff resolutions etc for exporting a clip intended to be added to a web page. Diff levels of mpeg compression, etc.
I'm most impressed with the quality of H264, the video codec for the video ipod. I play it in a quicktime player just fine & it looks great. Its a choice in FCP HD 4.5
The question is, can I make a little clip in H264 & put it on the web? Will web browsers with plug-ins set up to play quicktime files be able to play it? are there any compatibility issues? Windows browsers? etc?
    Thanks
    Duane

Yes, they are playable on the web. They were able to do that before the video iPod came along, so that was their original intent.
For others to see it they need to have QT7, and unfortunately many PCs cannot see videos in this format.

  • Possibly dumb new user question: What does it take to get variables to show up in the variables reporting tab?

I've been a LabVIEW user (2011) for about 1.5 years now and just got ahold of TestStand 2014 to try out as a structure for our future test needs.
I've been using it on and off for about 3 days and there's something that's been driving me nuts.  When I run a sequence and the report comes up at the end, there's three tabs on it:  Report, Steps, and Variables.  Report and Steps are exactly what I expect to see.   However, the Variables tab is always blank.  Nothing I have found via my technique of checking everything in the menus that looks vaguely related and right-clicking things on many objects and checking those menus for other vaguely related things as well.
I tried searching for references to it, and everything I get relates to the "Main" variables tab that you see when editing the sequence, not the one that comes up on the report.
See the arrow in the picture below:
I suspect there's something incredibly obvious that I am missing but it's driving me nuts here...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You won't see that populated when an execution is complete. The variables are worthless at that point.
If you want to see that tab populated pause the execution in the middle.  Or set a breakpoint.  Then you can look at the variables at run time.

    Hi,
no the audio won't play during capture from your computer.
However you can hear it from the camcorder if there is the control to do so, but not from the computer.

  • ICal questions, maybe going into applescript question

Hello, I am trying to create a recurring ICAL event with different titles for a time period.  It is simple, I want on monday of everyweek tor 7 monthes to read, week1, week2, week3 etc.  Is this possibe in ICAL, or possible via applescript (beginner applescripter)?
    Thanks!

All do-able in DVDSP... and pretty easy to do as well.
You can create the menus with links to the chapters in your track (which will play the chapter and then continue), you can set the chapters into stories and point the menu buttons to those instead and you can set each story to go back to the right menu.
You can then point a play all button at the track itself, which will then play all... which hopefully answers mish's question as well as yours.
Much of this is in the tutorials that come with DVDSP, and it is well worth your time going through those if you haven't already moved up to DVDSP. There is a lot of help available on this forum as well, mind you!

  • Dumb newbie question on iphone development

Hi there, just a quick dumb question: Can i develop Iphone apps in Windows platform? This is b'coz I dun have Mac machine.

a simple answer is YES in opposite of what you read here.
+I'm a .NET developer and I started building web apps in .NET (ASP.NET).+
The iPhone/iPod Touch supports 2 different ways to develop something for it, a Web Application (applications that runs on Safari browser, like Facebook and Wordpress) and a SDK Application (Self contain applications, like games, utilities, etc). *Under Windows, you can do any Web Application*, you will need a Mac to do SDK Applications
Reading the Wrox book entitled: Professional iPhone Application Development (ISBN 0470251557) in page 5 the writer tells about 4 levels to do Web Apps:
    *Level 1 - Full compatible website/application*
The ground level approach is to develop a Web site/app that is “ iPhone/iPod touch – friendly ” and is fully compatible with the Apple mobile devices. These sites avoid using technologies that the Apple mobile devices do not support, including Flash, Java, and other plug - ins. The basic structure of the presentation layer also maximizes use of blocks and columns to make it easy for users to navigate and zoom within the site. This basic approach does not do anything specific for iPhone/iPod touch users, but makes sure that there are no barriers to a satisfactory browsing experience.
    (just like http://del.icio.us/
*Level 2 - Web site/application optimized for Safari*
The second level of support for iPhone and iPod touch is to not only provide a basic level of experience for the Mobile Safari user, but also to provide an optimized user experience for users who use Safari browsers, such as utilizing some of the enhanced WebKit CSS properties supported by Safari.
    *Level 3 - Dedicated iPhone/iPod Touch web site/application*
A third level of support is to provide a Web site tailored to the viewport dimensions of the iPhone and iPod touch and provide a strong Web browsing experience for Apple device users. However, while these sites are tailored for iPhone/iPod touch viewing, they do not always seek to emulate Apple UI design. And, in many cases, these are often stripped - down versions of a fuller Web site or
    application.
    (just like Amazon.com and Facebook)
    *Level 4 - Native - looking iPhone/iPod touch application*
The final approach is to provide a Web application that is designed exclusively for iPhone and iPod touch and closely emulates the UI design of native applications. One of the design goals is to minimize user awareness that they are even inside of a browser environment. Moreover, a full - fledged iPhone application will, as is relevant, integrate with iPhone - specific services, including Phone, Mail, and Google Maps.
I did 2 web apps using Dreamweaver for Windows, using Level 4, coding plain HTML - there is no visual aid, but you just pick up an iPhone/iPod Touch (or if you don't have this, use Safari browser or any WebKit Browser).
    You can always start here
Remember, if you really want to build a self contain application in Objective-C/Java, then you need a Mac running Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), with XCode (the Mac Visual Studio) and the iPhone SDK
Hope that with this you can see some light under Windows

  • On Exit action possible on a question slide?

I'm using Captivate 6.  My project has branching that occurs "on success" for some question slides, but if the user skips the question (which is allowed in this case) the branching doesn't happen.  On a regular slide there is an On Exit option to initiate branching, but that dropdown is greyed out on my question slide.  How can I initiate branching on a question slide if the question is skipped?
    Thanks,
    Glenn
p.s. My first thought just now was to insert a regular slide immediately after the question slide with On Exit set on that slide to branch immediately to the correct location.  However, that adds an extra slide and maybe there's a better way?
    Message was edited by: GPillsbury1

    Hello,
On Exit action has never been possible for question slides. Reason is that when the user has accomplished the two-step process for asnwering a question (1. Submit, 2. Click on slide or Press Y) the actions defined On Succes/Last Attempt for that question will be executed. That is embedded in the question slides. This is of course not the case for other slides. But even there On Exit events must be handled with care because they will only be done if the last frame of the slide is visited.

  • Possibly really stupid question.

What I've read about backing up itunes always refers to making sure that your purchased music doesn't get lost. There's a lot of other "stuff" in there also, things that weren't purchased...my own CD's, audiobooks, videos, etc`.
Here's the really dumb question: If I hook up my external hard drive and copy itunes to it, does everything I have get copied to the external drive...music, videos, whatever?

I know very little about the file structure on a Windows PC (Apple since 1984). On a Mac, which may be similar to Windows, I just select the *iTunes Music* folder, grab and drag it to the desired location on my external HD and let go. This creates an exact copy of the folder on my external drive.
As far as getting there (to your *iTunes Music* folder) I can be of little help.

Is it possible that the "Delete events 30 days after they have passed" advanced preference got turned on in iCal somehow?

  • Really dumb newbie question

ok how do you change the text of a label for a form field, I drilled down to edit the layer its on, its property has it as dynamic, which doesn't make sense because it is static, but I don't care about that just how do I actually get to the text and change it. I would have thought it would simply be in the properties of the label. there is help that gets invoked when hovering over the label, is that perhaps what is making changing the label text so obscure to me at this point. see pic of where I'm at, don't know how to make the pic bigger and more readable, but its got the properties for the label open at the bottom and  the dropdown box is 'dynamic' but I'm not seeing where the actual text is stored.

If you select the textfield and in the Properties panel you see <Instance Name>, then any text the textfield has in it is text that is typed into it because without an instance name assigned there is no way you can use code to assign the instance name.  So just edit the text directly in the textfield by typing in it.
I'll take that back if it happens to be an AS1/AS2 file... in those versions it is possible to assign a variable to the textfield instead of an instance name (bad practice, but it can be done).  So if you see something entered in the Properties panel field labeled "Var:", then you might find some code assigning a value to the textfield that way.
But if the first image you showed is one of the textfields in question, just edit the text you see directly in the textfield because it has no instance name nor Var assigned to it.  And while you're at it, change it to a static textfield... static textfields are easier to manage display-wise and avoid font issues that might come up with dynamic textfields.

  • A really dumb Mail question

Like the subject says, I have a really dumb question.
This morning, my IMAP went nuts, and I spent about an hour trying to fix it. Everything seems to be normal now, and Mail is back up and running (hopefully). But now I noticed something, whenever I get new mail, the number of unread emails doesn't show up to the right side of the main inbox like it does with the other mailboxes I created.
I have rules set up, so certain emails go to certain folders, and those folders display the number of unread messages inside. But not the main inbox.
So now I'm wondering if that was always the case, and this is just paranoia left over from the email mess this morning, causing me to notice something that might have never been there in the first place.
    Thanks for any help

    Ernie:
The folders are on the IMAP server, and not On My Mac.
Most messages that don't fall under the rules will go to the default inbox.
For those messages that are moved, a number counting the amount of unread messages will show up next to the folder.
    Fioba:
That sounds like a good idea, but it seems counter intuitive to need to create a smart mailbox for unread messages, when that is the purpose of the inbox itself.
