Possibly ignorant question I have an old

I have Fall-2009 iMac as my primary computer. I also have a B&W G3 (Yosemite). The latter supports some software and peripherals the iMac does not. So I would like to run the G3 now and then.
I can obviously do so using a separate display. But it would be convenient to use the G3 via the iMac using something like OS X screen sharing.
Is ARD the right tool? If not, what would be?
Assuming ARD is the right tool, would I need copies on both the iMac and the G3? do compatible versions of ARD exist for OSX 10.6.4 and OS 8.6 or 9.X?
Thanks in advance for any help.
John

Thank you very much. It sounds like I need to install the OS 9 version of the vine server on my G3, then connect to the G3 using the "native" VNC screen sharing application on my iMac. Quite simple (sounding). I will give it a try.

.mac mail question:I have an old emac without an intel chip...I have a .mac email account, I would like to be able to have my emails automatically forwarded to a gmail account. I cannot access icloud with this old machine, any ideas? thanks! and aloha!

    Hello,
But you can setup iCloud email on you old Mac!
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 993
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 587
    • SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

  • Ignorant question: Where have my photos gone?

Apologies if you think this has been covered previously but similar queries haven't answered my ignorant but basic question. I can't find where my photos are saved to in iPhoto 08 - in 06, the file structure is 1) visible to me and 2) arranged chronologically. Please put me out of my misery and tell me where I can find the files!
    Cheers,
    Bobber

With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to visit with them? Find the Library icon in the Pictures Folder and right click on it. From the resulting menu select ‘Show Package Contents’. A Finder Window will open with the Library Exposed. It will look familiar.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
All of the above are a: Faster and b: Safer that rooting through the folders of the iPhoto Library.
    Regards

I have an old Apple ID associated with a discontinued e-mail address.  It keeps popping up when I try to update apps.  I don't remember the password.  When I try to change it by security questions, it rejects my birthdate!  I can't change it by e-mail because I no longer have access to the e-mail.  All I really want to do is cancel this old ID.  How can I do this?  Obviously, I have a new ID, since I am using this support community.

You'll have to contact iTunes store support to see if they can help you with this: http://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html.

  • Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  Only one Sparse Bundle, same name.

Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  There is only one sparse bundle but when I enter time machine I don't see my historic backups.  I use a synology DS212 for my time machine.  Started a new backup which is 218gb but it says 618 gb is occupied  therefore it looks like 2 or 3 backups are still on the disk. Before my NAS issues the last backup was in 2014.  As you can see there is a second sparse bundle from 2012.  Not sure what that is.

This is an old message now, but what happened to me similarly was:
I had a major computer crash and through complicated pathways ended up reinstalling (Mavericks) as a new user (long story).
At least I had good Time Machine backups on an NAS drive (Synology DS212j), or so I thought - when I started Time Machine up again, the old backup file was gone, replaced by a new one using my "new computer" name. The old file was gone both by directly mounting the NAS drive and by clicking "Enter Time Machine".
It's like I had {OldShareName}.sparsebundle and then it was replaced by {NewShareName}.sparsebundle, all of the old info vanished.
(I have spent a week finding old files elsewhere and have completed a satisfactory self-restore. It pays to "archive" [my own variation of] as well as "back-up".)
My belief is that if this were a wired-netword-drive, e.g. plugged right into my iMac with a USB cable, then the old file would have remained.
But this is an NAS drive, connected directly to my Airport wireless router, and I don't know the significance of the fact that it stores its Time Machine backups as "sparsebundle" files rather than simply as plain(er) files.
As usual when things get complicated with computers (not just Apple computers) there was never a warning message. Something like "YOU'RE ABOUT TO DELETE A TIME MACHINE BACK-UP FILE!!!" would have made my life a lot simpler.
BTW, I did try a "restore from Time Machine" option the first thing I had my "new computer" (old hardware, 2009 iMac) up and running, using Migration Assistant, and it ran for many hours and then failed in the wee hours - what that has to do with anything I'm not sure.
I'm not sure that I have a question about this other than "why do these things happen to me?", but it's a warning. Apart from that I've been very happy with the stability and reliability (but not the cost or set-up complexity) of NAS vs. directly-cabled external drives.

Hi. My iMac hard drive is running Mavericks.  I have an old version of Quark Xpress (3.32) which won't run in Mavericks.  Can I partition my hard drive and run an older system on one partition, so I can access my Quark?  Is that possible?

    Hi ancelau,
QuarkXPress 3 is a Classic Mac OS application, so you need a version of OS X that still supports Classic. I believe 10.4 was the last one.
So if you have an iMac that boots with 10.4, then yes that is possible. I doubt though that newer Macs boot with OS X 10.4.
So why don't you upgrade QuarkXPress 3 to a newer version? I am not just asking that because I want you to spend money with us.
Typically using software that was released almost 20 years ago is just feasible when you keep an environment that was current at the time of release or a few years after, so an older Mac with a operating system present at that time. 20 years in IT is a lot.
So my opinion is that on a new Mac with a brand new operating system you need to use something a bit more current.
How about QuarkXPress 9 (released 3 years ago) or QuarkXPress 10? You are better off with v9, as QuarkXPress 10 only opens v7 and higher (whereas QuarkXPress 9 opens v3.1 and higher).
Or - I am even happy to make an exception - upgrade to 9 and we give you 10 for free? Let me know please.
    Thanks
    Matthias

    Hello brjdunn,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
You are able to change your Apple ID by following the instructions below.  That way you will still have access to all of your previous purchases:

  • I currently have an old laptop and am thinking of upgrading to a new laptop in the near future, but I want to install lightroom anyways. Is it possible to download it on my current machine and still download it on my new laptop in the future?

i currently have an old laptop with the intention of upgrading soonish. I would like to go ahead and download lightroom but am worried when i get the new machine it wont transfer over. Is it possible to put lightroom on multiple computers from the same one purchase?

A single Lightroom license entitles you to two installations but for your personal use. There is no activation process for Lightroom, so you can simply uninstall from a computer you are no longer using and have it installed on two computers that you use. There are things to be aware of if you are going to move all of your work to a new computer. The following link will probably be of help to you.

  • I currently have an old version of Photoshop - CS, is it possible to upgrade?

I currently have an old version of Photoshop - CS, is it possible to upgrade to a newer version? It keeps crashing on my new Mac (Macbook Pro 2GHz Intel Core i7 running OSX version 10.6.8) and I don't use photoshop that much (probably once per month to design gig flyers) so I cannot justify spending $1,168 for the current version of CS6. I don't want to try and learn a new product either, I just want to be able to use Photoshop without it crashing. Please help!

From CS - CS6, there is no upgrade option possible. The last version that Adobe lets you upgrade from is CS3 (that too, till December 2012). Adobe usually supports current minus 2 versions for upgrade support.
In your case, you should buy a full version - yes I know it is expensive and having said that you need it only once a month, I don't know what to advice here.
Regarding CS not running on 10.6.8, are you getting any specific error codes/ numbers/ crash reports? If so, can you please post that here so we can see what may be going wrong?
While I doubt CS will work on OS 10.4 or 10.5+ (I've never used it), I can't say it never will work either. The only way to tell is to see a crash report to see what is going wrong.

  • If I upgrade my iOS from 5.1 to 6.0 then do I have to upgrade my Xcode also? So my question is all my old Xcode project which I have tried with Xcode 4.3.2 will be still there because I do not want to destroy them.

I have xcode 4.3.2 and  iOS simulator Version 5.1 (272.21). But this course is on iOS 6. If I upgrade my iOS from 5.1 to 6.0 then do I have to upgrade my Xcode also? So my question is all my old Xcode project which I have tried with Xcode 4.3.2 will be still there because I do not want to destroy them.
I have a MacBook Pro (Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b). Please let me know about upgrading iOS version so that I will be able to do the class project.

To program for iOS 6, you need iOS 6 SDK. You need to download Xcode 4.5.x. But don't worry. All your previous projects are still alive and you are able to open them in the new Xcode.

I suggest you get 9.2.  You need to install the same or later version of the OS.  One some computer the shipped version has extra drivers.  The drivers will not be in the official release in this case 9.1.  They would be in 9.2.
Mac OS 9.1 (Mac OS ROM 7.5.1) and Mac OS X 10.0.4 (4P13)

Try holding down the option key then power on.  This brings up the startup manager.  Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine.  It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS.   It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down command+option+o+f
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:

On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?

For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.
