  • I need to upgrade but don't know which version I have to get.  Do I have to go through each lower version or can I go straight to 10.8 then get free MAverick upgrade?  I live FAR from Apple store, so download upgrade is preferred.  :)

Need a newer version of Os to run printer and software.  Confused if I need to get which version to be able to upgrade to MAverick for free.  Also, need something I can download since Apple store is far away.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X. For detailed information see this user tip:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271 )
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is still available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Before installation you should back up all your data.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes (you will need the latest version in order to synch with mobile devices).
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • How to downgrade to Mavericks?

I’m seeking downgrade advice because I’ve never downgraded my Mac before.
I’ve scoured the net and the forums for fixes (I’ve already tried turning off graphics switching, resetting SMC and PRAM, repairing the disk, turning Bluetooth off and on a dozen times a day, etc. etc.) but I think it is time to deal with the inevitable — it is time to downgrade.
I feel abandoned by Apple. My computer is not even that old (MacBook Pro Retina, Mid 2012) yet it seems that Apple did not bother to test Yosemite on this model at all judging from my own experience and those that I have read about online.
Yosemite complaints, in order of maximum frustration:
    1) Apple’s lack of acknowledgement and updates to fix these problems.
    2) Complete lockups 2-6 times per day (It’s like Windows!)
    3) Bluetooth is unusable (BT mouse rarely works)
    4) Graphics artifacts everywhere (worse than Mavericks)
    5) Wifi not as good as Mountain Lion
    6) Automatic graphics hardware switching causes lockups if turned on.
    7) Won’t stay asleep (battery is 0% in the morning)
I never minded paying premium prices for Macs because my computer is my primary tool and I need (and expect) reliability. But this is reminiscent of my Windows experiences. I dumped Windows for Linux and then for Mac 13 years ago because I realized I was spending more time fixing my computer than actually using it.
So, for the first time, I’m seriously considering downgrading my Mac. My target is Mavericks even though the graphics artifacts in Mavericks were the reason I upgraded to Yosemite in the first place. I think that going back too far would be a problem since most of my software is up to date and was probably built with Yosemite in mind (I also want iCloud to keep working correctly).
I would like to hear from Mac users that successfully downgraded and what pitfalls they encountered.
Having said that, what is the best way to downgrade?
    - Can I install Mavericks over top of Yosemite or do I have to wipe the machine clean and do a fresh install?
    - Are there any complications with Time Machine backups?
    - Does iCloud still work as expected?
    - Can I preserve my application settings?
    - Since I have a non-removable SSD, what's a good way to preserve my data if a I do a fresh install?
I am really dreading this, having to reinstall everything, and set up everything again. But, Yosemite is impacting my productivity.
    My system specs:
    OS X 10.10.1
    MBP retina mid 2012
    2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

I think the problem with Yosemite + rMBP mid 2012 is more fundamental than a mere software configuration issue. From what I've read even a clean install doesn't resolve the issues. That means it's not likely related to upgrade cruft. The newest rMBPs use different graphics hardware so I doubt that it's a high priority for Apple to make a machine they don't sell anymore run correctly. Having said that, I really want them to fix it because I like Yosemite and would prefer to stick with it. It's just that the need for reliability trumps everything else.
I ran EtreCheck, and posted the results below.
EtreCheck reports 'Good' Bluetooth status but the BT mouse in not working.
    Problem description:
    - Complete lockups 2-6 times per day (mouse pointer is usually movable)
    - Bluetooth is unusable (BT mouse rarely works)
    - Graphics artifacts
    - Automatic graphics hardware switching causes lockups if turned on.
    - Won’t stay asleep (wakes up and drains battery)
    EtreCheck version: 2.1.6 (109)

  • Is it possible to change the Calendar 7.0 view to show 2 weeks instead of 1 week or month view. I find the month view is far too messy and the 1 week too short. To date I found the previous version more visibly user friendly

I have upgraded to Mavericks and have found the Calendar 7.0 not visually user friendly. The week view is too resrictive and the month view far too messy. Is there any way of editting the view, the ability to change the colour and thickness of the grid lines would at least help. This version of Calendar seems to be a retrograde step.

Agree.  Positively loathe the new calendar display - each day blends into the next and I can't get my information at a glance.  Looks like it's time to switch to BusyCal or Google Calendar.

  • I've managed to get back to Pages 4.3 and delete the downgrade Pages 5, which makes a total mess of any doc prepared with it,  but how to I get back to the old version of Pages on my iPad so that I can work while I am away from home.

I've managed to get back to Pages 4.3 on my iMac and delete the downgrade Pages 5, which makes a total mess of photo-rich documents prepared with Facing Pages (most of mine),  but how to I get back to the old version of Pages on my iPad so that I can work on sections away from home. At least on my old PC, Word maintained compatability with old versions. Beginning to regret having switched.

Thanks for your help. What is really irritating is that Apple give a big hurray about what they have added as "new"  in Pages 5 (most of it pretty useless) without telling you of the myriad things they have deleted.  If they had shown the list your gave the link to, I doubt may regular users would risked going to Mavericks with its auto upgrade. My partner got the message in time and is sticking with the earlier operating systems and Pages on Mac and iPad. Lucky girl.
I have found a way to use my iPad to add chapters written while on the move to reports on my iMac Pages 4.3. If I write it on the new Pages on the iMac (don't seem to be able to revert there), the send the report as an email in WORD format (not Pages) and download it in the Text Editor, then cut and paste into the story on the iMac. Hardly elegant but it works.

  • Time Machine "inherit" after emergency downgrade to Mavericks

    (iMac;  3.6GHz Intel Core i5; 16GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory)
I was having many kernel panics after upgrading to Yosemite. After thorough hardware diagnostics (no hardware problems), the Genius Bar guy suggested downgrading to Mavericks 10.9.5, which he did in the store by wiping the hard drive and installing 10.9.5.
From the latest time machine back up drive (WHICH HAD BEEN BACKING UP FROM YOSEMITE), I copied my apps and files across in small groups and so far so good re: kernel panics. This process was not done via time machine interface, simply by dragging off the drive from newest backup.
Now, I would like to resume using that same drive for time machine backups from 10.9.5. And I believe I want to "inherit" that existing drive, so my future Mavericks back ups are ADDED TO but do not REPLACE the current Yosemite back ups.
The scary thing, in setting up time machine preferences is that this drive is showing " oldest backup: none // Latest backup: none "  I'm afraid of going farther because I do not want this drive to be wiped during backup, for fear that kernel panics will return during that process and I could lose important data or ALL of it for that matter.
So, (1) Do I understand inherit correctly ? (2) How can I keep the current backups on this drive and ADD the future Mavericks backups?
    thanks!!!!

  • How do I downgrade from Mavericks to Snow Leopard and save my new pages files?

Unfortunately, the Mavericks system isn't working for me. It's way too slow, has issues with Finder and so on. Basically it's just a pain in my *** and my
beloved Mac Book Unibody (2010) just can't handle it! After searching for hours online for a solution, I'd love to get back to the good old times.
I read that I can downgrade to Snow Leopard with my latest TM backup, using the recovery mode. Problem is that I "upgraded" sometime in October, so I have accumulated a bunch of new files. Being a teacher, I have tons of documents and Apple unfortunately changed all the old '09 files into '13 ones. Will they still work under the new old system, or do I have to find some way to export them into '09 files?
Is it fine to use the TM backup, or is it better to use ds store's method to recover the system?
    Thanks

I backed up the system just prior to upgrading.

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac
    Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac7,1
      Processor Name:

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.
Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have? Recent versions of OS X really shine with 4GB or more.

  • Issues with Yosemite, can I downgrade to Mavericks or Mountain Lion and downgrade Apple Apps to work with older OS X

    Hi
I am having several issues with Yosemite, mainly disappearing folders (title / name) but no folder or more importantly no previews of .mov or other video files nor unable to open them.  I have years of these files that I want to edit in FCP X.
I have upgraded all my Apple apps so they now work in 10.10.2, but I want to revert back to Mavericks as a second partition for video work.
Is there any way I can reinstalled an older OS and downgrade my Apple apps like FCP X and Aperture so I can open, edit and produce dvd / bluray of these files.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

Thanks perermac87. I'm can make a second partition on ssd for mavericks as plenty of space, but final cut x 10.1.4 I have now needs Yosemite to open. So how can I also download older versions of my apps from the App Store?
urbkuhl I live in the uk with fibre too and downloaded 10.10.2 in under 10 mins
